12:26 AM
@bwDraco Hi. :) My shift ends in half an hour. I've done my work and have time to spare. How about you?

Settling down after running a bit of an errand.

user226528
There is something I wanted to ask you, since you are close to the matter.

user226528
Is it true that net neutrality is not being repealed after all?

user226528
Or was that just a rumor?

@Bob my republic's throttled connect compared to my other line

12:30 AM
But what's with the high latency?
749 ms, seriously?

@FleetCommand It still has to go through a couple more levels of government IIRC.

This looks more like a satellite Internet connection than LTE-A (as the "4G+" in the status bar indicates).

Oh. Kinda remote part of town I assume

Heh... Feedback is not a link.

Amusingly MR is a MVNO of the other isp

user226528
12:33 AM
@MichaelFrank If it has to go through several levels of "government" then it must have passed through all levels of congress already, right?

@MichaelFrank It's a JS button.

@FleetCommand It cleared the Senate. We'd prefer political discussion to be on Matrix, though.

Tried it closer to the train station

@JourneymanGeek I don't get these kinds of speeds :(

12:36 AM
@FleetCommand What Draco said. I don't really pretend to understand how the political structure works in the US. shrug

@bwDraco more curious about the slower speeds
The MVNO effectively gives me unlimited data usage at that speed

user226528
@MichaelFrank Neither the political nor the technical aspect of it is important for me. The thing that is important is about this room exclusively: Not long ago, a starred message was pinned in this room saying net neutrality was not being repealed after all. And if I am not mistaken you were the author.

user226528
So, the question is: What was that?

user226528
And I'd like to reiterate: I am not here to discuss the matter.

@FleetCommand From memory, the Senate voted to restore NN, although I believe it needed to go up through several more levels of hell.

12:41 AM
See my response on Matrix.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that was quick

@Bob it's only a gig ?

user226528
@bwDraco I saw your message there but Matrix.org isn't going to let me post anything until go through some setup stages. (I suspect it is GDPR related.) Anyway, I just wanted to know the source of this news. That's all.

user226528
Thanks. Alright, it was nice meeting you all. Have a nice [insert time of the day].

user226528
12:49 AM
:)

(local cable Internet connection via 2x2 802.11ac; Google's speed test tends to return much lower than expected results for my line)

> Whats that, all computer "stuff" can do what ever you need? Why can't you use this pack of paint brushes to calculate the GDP of Brazil?
> You could..is Brazil financially in the red or the black right now?
> Red. Blood, deep bright red.
> The word red doesn't begin to describe the shade. The only species on the planet that can BEGIN to comprehend it would be the mantis shrimp! : p
> Red? It's so far into the infrared that only certain types of snakes can "see" it.

3:07 AM
Hmm, my ethereum mining output has dropped to about $20 a month

Gotta pwn more home routers!

it's not memory corruption; it's just the bot saying its algorithm doesn't work

but it's choosing a random user, and then failing to display stats for them correctly.
It works if you give it a user ID: /stat 12345 but /stat causes... demons.

Bob
It's a known issue. stat has never worked
because it's hard to associate chat IDs with site IDs
O_O @allquixotic fixed it at some point

How long before we have neural nets writing viruses
It's not a hard test to setup
1. setup neural net to write code that survives virus scanners
2. test against virus scanners
3. repeat
4. SKYNET!

morning

Or rather, we write a neural network that writes neural networks for writing software that creates neural networks

Ave
@djsmiley2k it's a huge eh actually
I didn't do shady stuff in years but back then, viruses you wrote yourself were pretty much undetected by most antiviruses

2:20 PM
saurghgh
why is my scp server not running D:
Also, is there some way to simplify the 'run as administrator' stuff
i.e. if i right click and do that, have it not request my username and password every time?

@djsmiley2k gargling while trying to write "sauer kraut"?

Bob
@djsmiley2k sure, launch a cmd window as admin and launch other processes from there
assuming in this case 'admin' means a different user account

/me launches a command window, then launches explorer.exe
yah, unforunately so

2:30 PM
I think i need to be more specific :D

Bob
@djsmiley2k I'm not entirely sure that'd work cause explorer's meant to be single-instance
at least it doesn't work for running explorer as elevated under the same user
under a different user might work

I was joking.
So, I have shortcuts for some things, which need to run as admin, and ask me the credentials every time i run them - if I've littereally just closed it 2 seconds before.
is there anyway of 'remembering' I have access to admin credentials?
say way sudo can remember for a specific amount of time

Q: Daughter dies at party

ChelleMy 19 year old step daughter attended a party in Illinois. One kid slipped a pill in her drink which caused her to have a heart attack and die. After watching this play out, this boy didn't even bother to seek any medical aid for her, such as calling 911 or alerting that she would need help. He ...

Must be awful
Not sure SE is the best venue for such a discussion (health.se has a 'no personal medical advice' close reason)

2:50 PM

Q: How do I fix Windows 10 apps from launching the store instead of the actual app?

If I launch the app from the Windows Store app, th...

4:53 PM
@KronoS not necessarily a solution but a while ago I had a similar issue and fixed it by sidegrading using the Media Creation Tool

:/ I'll have to look into that. This is a work resource though, not sure if I'm allowed to do that :P

5:41 PM
according to OVH's marketing email (@Bob): "Best Value Servers: you don't have to choose between price and performance" -- my response: "Yes you do" - no matter how good the value is, there's always a price/performance tradeoff

$95.99/month is more than what I'm paying for 128 GB on an E5v2

5:59 PM
@FleetCommand can you give me a quick tl;dr ?
I may take a look but after the day I've had, I want to dunk my head into a blender, full of tide pods.

I made the mistake of not realizing "just build the system and we'll send you the data" (said by a non-tech team, nonetheless) wasn't utter, total and complete madness.
And now I'm spending my days suffering.
Today it's a holiday, the sky is blue, the sun shines, bird are chirping outside
And here I am, looking at an excel table and trying to figure out WHAT THE FUCKING HELL WERE THEY THINKING
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THEM
DO THEY REALLY LACK LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE
A some weeks ago: "we're on a hurry so you start building the system and we start gathering the data on online forms, later we send you the CSV and you guys just import the data"
> just import the data
I open the CSV and...

WTF, 1.1.1.1 just crashed

@allquixotic Is that CloudFlare? The one that was BGP hijacked earlier this week?

yeah

6:13 PM
wow, 10 year old remote code execution exploit in Steam, but required an inbound UDP connection, so most people were protected by NAT
still vulnerable with a loopback (which means malware is running elsewhere on your box already) or within your LAN (which means malware is running elsewhere on your LAN)

> so most people were protected by NAT
._.
words I hear rarely

Hmm
I don't think we quite realise how much NAT has protected us

Or, in other words: the day everything becomes a publicly exposed IP, excrement will collide with the rotary blade cooling system.

@ThatBrazilianGuy you mean the day everyone switches over to IPv6-only, and the only thing protecting you from remote code execution is your OS's firewall?

@allquixotic That's exactly what I meant.

6:20 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy IPv6? :D
hmmm yes
but windows for a long time didn't have a firewall

@allquixotic Back to the amazing days of late 90's and early 00's where domestic connections would be either dial-up or bridged PPPoE

@ThatBrazilianGuy remember Windows 95 "Nuker" and "Anti-nuker" programs?
there was a RCE that could BSOD any publicly routable Win95 box

Oh god

@allquixotic Back Orifice, Netbus, etc etc etc etc etc etc

and defender programs against that, and attacker programs, ...

6:23 PM
they're gonna sell CGN as a 'Security Feature' arent' they?

@djsmiley2k yes, yes they are
operating systems are still not ready for typical PCs to be publicly routable
and users often configure their stuff to be "wide open" to get games to work
meaning someone could just randomly print death threats on your printer or something

hey, if they c an get my printer working they're welcome to it ;D

imo Windows 10 needs to add a very user-friendly UI for people to see what programs and ports are listening on an actual Internet-connected interface (like, your LAN IP or 0.0.0.0)

> Back to the amazing days of late 90's and early 00's where domestic connections would be either dial-up or bridged PPPoE
Except nowadays each house will have multiple desktops, laptops, phones, tablets, gaming consoles, media centers, streaming dongles, IoT devices etc etc, each with different levels of exploitability and patcheability.

@ThatBrazilianGuy and probably 70%+ of devices (esp. in countries like Brazil, where new stuff is expensive and hard to come by) no longer receiving security patches, or never did
yeah, IPv6 early days are going to be fuuuuuuuuuuuun
2
in the "DEAR GOD WHY IS MY WASHING MACHINE HUMPING MY VACUUM" sort of fun way

6:28 PM
It's going to be maybe a bit worse than what we've seen before
In the late 90's the internet was more of less still seen as a "novelty" of sorts.

you know what I think we need? we need NAT6 to be the standard configuration :/

Nowadays our online lives are inextricably part of our ordinary lives.
So something that affects the stability of the internet has a much broader social impact
We have much more exposed and much more to lose

inbound connections are so damn dangerous that we need to protect our actual devices behind an at least notionally low attack surface router/modem/hardware firewall that doesn't route inbound connections inward by default

20 years ago we communicated via POTS and banked via walking to the bank. Today?

@ThatBrazilianGuy I found the perfect scene in asdfmovie describing the way our devices will react when they get publicly routable IPv6 addresses

@allquixotic We all get muffins? Yaaaaay :D

@allquixotic or people to be security concious/firewalls on consumer gear to actually have a proper, secure, deny by default for ipv6 settings

@ThatBrazilianGuy no, the one where they turn on the light bulb and it's scary because they're used to being black and white

so...my dad's S7's phone's sim card holder broke. I picked up a replacement off $some_random_aliexpress_seller and it just sits too proud...

@djsmiley2k Hi, cool guy. I'd rather people see it for themselves and form their own opinion of it. And if they don't think what I think, then so be it. Its viewing is not mandatory at all.

I got the old one out, but not sure whether I got the wrong one or something else

fair enuf
@JourneymanGeek @:
file it?
iron it? ;/
it's prob 3d printed xD

naw
LOOKS identical
which is baffling
thinking of gluing the old one back together to compare

Hi. I'm trying to get a Chromium plugin to work (Keepa) on Linux. I don't think the issue is Linux-specific. Would it be on topic for SU?

7:28 PM
probably

@JourneymanGeek That's not very definite, but ok.

Well all the individual bits sound like they would be on topic

Microsoft Joke: "The galactic empire was only trying to restore order to universe; and the [Death Star's] exhaust port will be patched on Tuesday."

How is that not a troll? Are people this dense and clueless? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/15046/…
IPS is a weird place.

> Write a note, and slide it slowly towards her.

In what universe is yanking someone's earphones out or touching their back less startling/disruptive than waving a hand in front of their face?

@ToxicFrog Right?

(the face-wave is convention among my team)

9:57 PM
And how can someone be so legitimately clueless as to not realize yanking someone's earphone is intrusive and violent?
I see nothing wrong with a light touch on a shoulder or tap on the arm / back, but that is probably cultural. If a person tells me they're unconfortable with it, my reaction would be to respect their request. And never to react "huh, but... but she lets her boyfriend touch her"
Seriously, that question smells of trolling to me. No none is that clueless.
No adult person in a work scenario is that clueless.

I'd knock on their desk, or shoot them an IM saying that I'm coming over.
Unless this person is working with blinkers on, their peripheral vision probably works and they'll notice you sitting next to them.

i think i might be ill
i just woke up on the sofa after dreaming about working with elon musk on connecting 1990s era PC to helicopters and getting into an argument with prince william about over an obsolete graphics card

i should point out that prince william thought i was stealing the card when in reality i was returning it to the original owner after it was stolen from the office me and elon were working out of
and elon musk hated me because i'd corrected him on something
it was weird
