Since they talk "same thermal constraints"... Skylake-U had TDPs of 15 W and 28 W. Full-fat desktop Skylake was significantly higher.

Heck, could even be Skylake-Y they're talking about.

Skylake-Y is what went into Core-M

They're great for lightweight laptops. So if even that's what Arm's competing against, that's good. If they can do better, even better.

But in the Windows world they'll take a pretty big hit for any x86 emulation... hm.

If both chips ran at the same clock rate, without thermal constraints, how would they compare?

The implication is that thermal constraints is limiting one or the other.

And IIRC Zen is actually better than Skylake when thermally constrained.

Meaning even with the same nominal or burst rate one or the other might be downclocking within those contraints.

This is alllllllll speculation though, until there's more info.

They're also claiming mobile, not desktop, which makes me think it's talking about -U or -Y, but... again, speculation.

Also, re: core size, I'd be curious how it compares in SIMD scenarios. Which might not be relevant to most mobile users, too.

@Bob I'm 90% sure that's what they mean, because U uses way more power than your typical ARM Cortex deployment (read: mobile tablets and smartphones)

Apple made similar claims (or at least, media surrounding Apple did) in recent months about the A11 Bionic, and I think those turned out to be comparing against Core M as well

nobody's claiming your phone can outperform or even come within 10% of the perf of your full-fat laptop with a fan and a much larger battery and heat profile

and ARM's problem in entry to bigger systems -- aside from the x86 legacy software compatibility issue -- has always been that they either don't want to, or can't, scale up to U (and especially H) scale and bigger

let alone something like EP or EX
