@SmokeDetector k
@Makyen thanks. Can I skip scan and go directly to report?
@msh210 Yes. !!/scan is not required. It can be used to see if there are any detections already existing which would trigger on the post.
07:03
Yes.
@tripleee I don't know what "MS" is. When you say "reporting into MS", are you referring to the process outlined at chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/44092901#44092901 ?
in theory Metasmoke should tell you "already reported" if it's a duplicate but I don't think we are convinced it works correctly all the time
@Makyen okay, thanks.
@msh210 MS is Metasmoke metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com
@tripleee ah. That doesn't answer my question, though. :-)
07:05
and yes, the command reports the post to Metasmoke (by way of the SmokeDetector bot which handles the nitty-gritty of talking to people in chat etc)

@tripleee Got it. Thanks.
Can I type @SmokeDetector !!/report and the URL in another room in which SD is pingable?
I mean, I can type it. Will it do anything?
@msh210 One of the advantages of !!/scan is that if the post triggers enough detections at a high enough level, then automatic flags will be cast on the post. Automatic flags are never cast on posts which are !!/reported, as being reported is not sufficient to justify such flags. A post may not have been scanned, yet, by SD. This can happen if you happen to be viewing the post prior to SD getting to it. In some situations, SD waits for possible other posts, in order to save API quota.
not usually, you need to be explicitly privileged ... but if you're a mod I guess maybe
and no @SmokeDetector prefix, just !!/report <post>
@msh210 Commands (e.g. !!/report) are given without a @SmokeDetector ping.

@Makyen ah so if I report the post, it doesn't also get scanned by SD, so I'm not actually helping any? (Assuming I can spam-delete the post myself, as I'm a mod.)
@msh210 SD does not listen for commands from every room into which it reports posts. It's likely that whatever room you're talking about will work, but we can't tell you for sure without knowing what room you're asking about. As a moderator, you are automatically "privileged" to use SD commands. So, if you type the command in a room to which SD is listening for commands, it will work.
@tripleee ah okay thanks
@msh210 It definitely helps to have it reported, even if it's not scanned. It's used to help find additional similar posts.
@Makyen room 468
07:15
@msh210 go ahead and report if you are unsure
468: # V'dibarta Bam
commands: false
so no
this is from SmokeDetector's rooms.yml
if you are one of the room owners and would like to see that changed, that should absolutely be possible
@Makyen huh. (Getting into the asking-out-of-curiosity phase now as opposed to asking-to-know-what-to-do.) How does it identify "similar" posts without scanning the post?
@tripleee thanks. I guess we can always come in here.
I don't really think you need to understand the precise difference, "scanning" here means checking it against the rules and "reporting" bypasses that and reports it even if it does not trigger any of the existing rules
defining new rules based on posts we see reported is still mainly manual work
though we have a few experiments into machine learning
JAD
JAD
here reporting also means that it'll get saved in Metasmoke, to use for future creation of reasons
ah got it

and that's the useful part for us

@OliviaZoe gets old after a while.
@Cerbrus I've been, on-and-off, working on FIRE. One of the things I've been working on is adding the ability to cast rude/abusive and NAA flags. Unfortunately, it's not possible to do that at this point, because in order to be permitted to write to the SE API there must be a Stack Apps question for the script/application. I can use my own test credentials for testing, but prior to a general release, a post would need to be made.
I'd appreciate it if you could put creating a Stack Apps question for FIRE (and associating the post with FIRE's registration) on your to-do list. I'm not ready to submit a PR, but it would be helpful to get this blocking issue at least in process. The post doesn't need to be elaborate, but it's likely the easiest thing to do would be just to copy FIRE's README.md into the question, with some modifications.
@SmokeDetector k
I'm retiring from SE for now. Not sure how permanent that'll be. Also not sure if I'll end up deleting my account or not. It's really hard to stay away from something that was part of your life for so long. Peace out.

@Makyen I realized that I've had a negative and even destructive influence on several of the communities here. That is in part due to a major destructive personality flaw (taking everything too seriously and being relentlessly annoying and pushy) that I've been unable to kick for all my life so far.
Right now it's looking like I won't be able to kick or mitigate it while participating here either. So for now I'm planning to stay away from SE (not sure how far my self control will go there or if I'll bring myself to delete my account for good). Maybe someday I'll change enough to give it another shot.

Oh, no, all these flags go through MetaSmoke.
And no, do not implement R/A flagging. It's not possible without some proper documentation or a new API call from SE's side, @Makyen.
@Cerbrus Huh? Can't you do with R/A what MS does with spam?
No, the problem is flag Ids
Hit the flag options endpoint, search for R/A flag, send the option ID to the flag endpoint
's what we do with spam
> search for R/A flag
That's the problem.
The ids change per site
As does the flag's text
09:05
flag_options.select { |fo| fo['name'] == 'rude or abusive' }
Yeah, you miss out on language sites, but that's a small proportion of sites
we still don't autoflag spam on language sites for that reason
Back from the phone
My point is that I'm not comfortable making assumptions around these flags
Even if it's pretty certain the assumption is correct
That, and the fact we got a green light to use spam instead of R/A...

@Cerbrus I'm fine with not trying to push doing so on anyone else, if that's what you want. I'm not clear on what you mean by it not being possible "without some proper documentation or a new API call from SE's side".
The API exists on the SE side. It's certainly possible. As @ArtOfCode has mentioned, it's quite possible to have a set of known text descriptors, or a RegExp, against which to match the the flag option's .title. While there might be some uncertainty in some cases, it's possible to error on the side of caution when matching.
@Cerbrus The SE API reports that there is not a Stack Apps post associated with the key that is used for FIRE.

And are localized
@Cerbrus No, they don't. FIRE does make some calls to the SE API.
Well, all "Write" calls
09:29
@Cerbrus I agree that it's a terrible way for them to do it.
So we're not going to implement a hack for something as serious as R/A flags.
@Cerbrus OK.
@SmokeDetector K
That's why I requested a "static" API method that returns these flagging option ids
Or at least some proper documentation
Don't get me wrong, I know it can be done, and I know it'll probably work, but it just doesn't feel right.

I'm starting to get annoyed at the flag history page, that when I flag a comment it links to the post and not the comment.

We're not gonna hack around this. Period.
@Cerbrus While I agree that it's hack-ish, I disagree that it can't be done safely and reliably, or at least such that it fails-safe. There are a small set of strings which match up to the known flag types. There isn't much difference between our having to match those and having SE doing a match on something we would send to them.
Does MetaSmoke have a "Flag as R/A" endpoint?
09:57
There.
So neither does FIRE
@Cerbrus I'm not attempting to convince you to permit FIRE to be released that way. I accepted here that you didn't want that.
As FIRE sends these write actions through MS
So why do you keep telling me you disagree?
So... if MS has such an endpoint, it'll literally do exactly what we've been talking about here - pick a flag option based on its title. What's the difference between having that code in metasmoke or in FIRE?
That seems a little pointless... I got that already. And I accept that.
