Q: `update-alternatives` vs `dpkg-reconfigure`

TimFrom https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/292599/674 On Debian derivatives, you can switch between Dash and Bash as the default /bin/sh by running dpkg-reconfigure dash as root. Is it correct that both update-alternatives and dpkg-reconfigure can be used for changing the executable which a syml...

@Seth The card game? I stalled, because I couldn't make a decision between Qt and UE4. Did a little of one and a little of the other and got analysis paralysis. I really should get back to that.

11:52 AM
@cl-netbox: got Windows and Ubuntu back!
(keyboard reprogrammed back to what it was)

12:17 PM
second season of Series of Unfortunate Events is off to a good start

Liked Altered Carbon if you haven't watched that one yet. Ep01 sets the hook really well towards the end of the episode, but it's one of those series where you can't look away or you miss something critical or you have to have read the book to keep up.
If I go back to the card game thing, there's a nice example for Qt now wiki.qt.io/One_Card!_(Qt_Multiplayer_Card_Game)

Can I ask questions about OS and not particularly related to Ubuntu here? I have a brief question so I didn't post it on SO, I want to know whether "Bootstrap Program" and "BIOS" are same things? (I've seen the former in my OS textbook and the latter on the internet and they both seem to be same things...), TYIA.

@Simon.B coulda sworn I saw a question on that on SU
and not really, and BIOS on modern systems arn't really bios.

I know you mean UEFI?

Yup!
BIOS is basically a low level firmware that an OS can talk to and is mostly standard

Ok so why don't you think they're same things? You don't remember?

2:08 PM
but but
its basic
so a boostrap program basically is designed to be small and go from there to a state where a bigger OS can load
say GRUB or ntldr/gldr

@JourneymanGeek I don't understand. "from there"? Where is "there"?

@Simon.B from BIOS to some intermediate stage to the OS

I think GRUB is a boot loader not a bootstrap program.

well a bootloader essentially is one
it basically gets a system with limited hardware support up, then hands it over to the kernel and its more powerful hardware support

ooh Google has a GiB to MiB converter
snazzy

2:12 PM
@JourneymanGeek (If my questions are worthless let me know) A boot loader is a bootstrap program? You mean there are other ones as well?

well practically I'd suspect its the only one you'd see

@JourneymanGeek Thank you.

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
@Simon.B boot loader = bootstrap program who get invoked by BIOS.

@Fabby Hey, that's great news Fabby ! :)

4:44 PM
@Fabby Thanks

5:35 PM
@cl-netbox :-)
Now I'm not any step further though as the 10KRPM 2.5TB drive was DOA and needs returning...
;( ;( ;(
P.S. I'm trying to add my first ISO to grub2 using 40_Custom:
menuentry "GParted Live ISO" {
 set GPartEdISOFile="(hd1,3)/home/fab-root/Documents/ISO or Images\gparted-live-0.30.0-1-amd64.iso"
 loopback loop $GPartEdISOFile
 linux (loop)/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi boot=live config union=overlay username=user components noswap noeject vga=788 ip= net.ifnames=0 toram=filesystem.squashfs findiso=$GPartEdISOFile
 initrd (loop)/live/initrd.img
}
and I get the following error:

"magic is broken"...

Yup: I can break anything, even magic.

as always, confused and confusing ;-D

:D :D :D
@EliahKagan @PerlDuck @pomsky Contrarily to popular belief, there still is a 32-bit version...

6:22 PM
Neil Patrick Harris is amazing as Count Olaf

@Fabby That's for 16.04 and it is also available as an HTTP download (see this virtual directory listing). The corresponding directory listing for 17.10 does not have any 32-bit desktop images (nor any torrents for them), nor are there any in the other place one might look.

OK, deleting answer and casting close vote.

Doesn't Lubuntu and maybe other lighter flavours still supply 32bit images?

@Fabby You might want to wait to delete your answer.
It might be giving the OP what they want. Maybe add info on other ways to download? They might be fine with, or even prefer, 16.04.

@ByteCommander only through installing 16.04 and upgrading AFAIK

6:27 PM
Oh, well you might consider undeleting it. :)
It's up to you.

undelete!

wait to delete! Sorry

Yeah, I meant, like, not to just go immediately to delete it.
:)
Anyway, you can undelete it if you choose to do. Which I suggest. I think the system still lets you redelete it later if you end up wanting to. Anyway it's up to you.

Undeleted and added your link to HTTP.

Thanks.

6:32 PM
@Fabby OK then, I had nearly taken back my upvote. ;)

@dessert :D
@vidarlo thanks. upvoted, although in a few years time you'll get a ping from that user that he lost everything as he won't have listened to me and not made any backups...
>:-) >:-) >:-)

@vidarlo In case that happens please ping Fabby for an epic “told-you-so” comment.

@ByteCommander you've got the top answer now +15 and climbing!!!
:D :D :D Star-bait! :D :D :D

@RobotHumans you should really give it a try

@Fabby hmm, indeed. It's also the least controversial, as it seems. Only 1 DV.

6:50 PM
96GB left to move.......
Why does Gparted insist on moving the entire partition to the right, when I just want to resize it?

@TheWanderer It's a nazi.

oh
I thought you Germans were forbidding from speaking that word :p
70GB
50GB

@Fabby In my opinion you're destined too loose all data you don't have at least three copies of
I'm talking from expirience...

Correct:

@dessert I will.

7:04 PM
one copy does not constitute a backup

@fabby and in addition fakeraid makes it far more likely

@TheWanderer I live in East Germany. xD

yup.

THECOMMIES

your motherboards gone and you cant find the one with the exact same firmware? Too fucking bad for you
@dessert Berlin?

7:05 PM
@vidarlo :D :D :D
@TheWanderer It's only illegal to call a person a Nazi, not a tool.

with Linux kernel software raid you at least know how it's built up

@Fabby 'twas a joke you old fart
:D

@vidarlo far more rural

@Fabby oh

@vidarlo Preaching to the choir... ;-)

7:07 PM
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii‌iiiihhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii‌iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I used to be known as "Mr. Backup" around here...

@TheXed no

@TheWanderer cool.

@fabby backup is so god damn easy those days. 10-15$ a month is the cost of backing up 10TiB of data
have all my movies and non-important stuff dumped to Jottacloud, because... it's cheap. All my important stuff? Backblaze, external drives and so on :D

7:08 PM
@TheWanderer As some American woman found out a couple of weeks ago when she called the Border control people "a bunch of Nazis": a night in the slammer and deported back to the US.

@dessert Ah. My brother married a east german woman, so I've heard some stories about growing up in the DDR

@vidarlo I believe in having my backups local: 10GB/min. It's not the backup that has to be fast, it's the restore...

@Fabby what's Amarican?

Some people would be offended when someone calls a regular person a Nazi.

@fabby I have local backups as well, but what if this place burns down?

7:10 PM
@TheWanderer Corrected, thanks for pointing that out

@TheXed @dessert called Gparted a Nazi; I think he needs to be deported to America

@fabby and anyway, restoring at 500Mb/s is survivable.

@vidarlo If the place burns down, the first thing to do is rescue your laptop.

@TheWanderer why are all the Nazi haters being deported to Amarica?

idk
it's what Fabby said

7:11 PM
@fabby that hardly constitutes a backup :D:D

he's our elder

@vidarlo Holy shit! Where do you live?

@vidarlo EXCUSE?!

@fabby why? In a rather fireproof building :)

@TheXed It's illegal in Germany to call someone a Nazi, unless you have proof and they are.
@vidarlo 500Mbps???

7:12 PM
@Fabby I know that, but we don't want them in Amarica either.

You live in a cloud exchange???

@fabby nope, quite common max speed in norway those days. Docsis

It is bad enough that we have Justin Beiber and Donald Trump to deal with.

@TheXed She was American (and that mistake was corrected, see above)
@TheXed :D :D :D I thought Bieber was Canadian???
That's half duplex Gbps

@Fabby he is Canadian but he won't leave America.

7:14 PM
@vidarlo NORWAY?
IM MOVING TO NORWAY

@TheWanderer you should try Korea

South, yes

@TheWanderer Norway also has the prettiest girls in the world...

but Norway speaks a language I'm more familiar with

@Fabby 50Mb/s upstream, which is the sole reason I'm bothering to pay for the fastest

7:15 PM
o_O

Ah, I had a 50Mbps SDSL at my previous flat.

@Thewanderer was at a hotel in Goje Island. Each and every room had it's own fiber line :P

pls
@Fabby DSL lol

@Fabby the second fastest is 200/20 or something, and I have more upstream traffic (10:1)...

Synchronous! and 1:1... The only thing was: they changed the IP every 24h.

7:16 PM
the fastest DSL I can get here is 3

@fabby mm, my problem is that I upload more than I download

I can get 150/10 for $100/mo here

@vidarlo yeah, then SDLS is still good. I should enquire what the max speed is nowadays...

@TheWanderer That's quite enough DS, but US of 10Mb/s sucks :\

@TheWanderer 50/50 costed: 20$/month

7:18 PM
it's cable so
and the USA

@fabby docsis has far less latency. 10ms difference
so I'd prefer docsis based any day

I love the White-Faced Women characters in this series

PING 1.1.1.1 (1.1.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=57 time=21.8 ms

"It smells like disinfectant here!" "I know, I'm hungry too."
oh wait it's only $90/mo

@fabby that's quite acceptable :)

7:21 PM
I forgot that my ISP removed that dumb $10/mo extra for internet for non-cable subscribers

@TheWanderer To the delight of my wife I can't remove the tv part...
so I have a mythtv setup, and have not watched TV in probably 15 years :D

the subtitles in this season are pretty terrible though

1 hour later…

whoa whoa whoa

Could anyone tell me what it exactly means that "CPU transfers execution to..."?

@ByteCommander For instance, When CPU is interrupted it stops what it is doing and transfers execution to a fixed location. Does that mean it (the CPU) executes the code in that other fixed location?

I guess so
but I would not call that "transfer execution"...
it's just a jump

@ByteCommander It's a CALL, not a JMP and @Simon.B is probably reading a course on CPU architecture.
(without knowing ASM)
0:-) ;-) 0:-)*

9:17 PM

9:41 PM
@Fabby Yes, I do. My language is not English, and at first when I saw this word "transfer", I thought maybe there's something other than the CPU which can do executions, and I was like this: O-o

@Simon.B And I bet you're being taught CPU architecture before you're being taught Assembler, right?
(What's your native language)

@Fabby Well I think that's not also a jump, according to what I'm reading it says that interrupt handlers' addresses are kept inside a table in low memory so that the intermediate routines for a call are removed and the speed(which we need from interrupts) is enhanced.

Correct.

Should be the Interrupt Vector Table

@Fabby Right, Probably I'm just like a blind person who loves whatever finds about computers and starts reading them :))) (My native language is Farsi).
@ByteCommander Yes, exactly.

9:45 PM
Like one of my colleagues.

feels dumb and googles where Farsi is spoken

Iran

amongst other countries in that region
TIL

@ByteCommander You really didn't know that! Ahem. Sorry didn't explain. Yup, Iran.

Iraq is Arab. Iran (the guys who brought us 60 seconds, 60 minutes, 360° is Farsi)
@Simon.B Do you know where my native language is spoken?
(Flemish)

9:48 PM
@Fabby Haha, and the most precise calendar by mathematician Khayyam. I feel childishly proud you knew this :D But probably now all the pride is in computers and at the hands of Californians :P

Yeah, well... call me uneducated, but in middle Europe you usually don't learn much about middle East

But you know where people speak Flemish! (And Simon doesn't)

@Fabby HAHA, in FleminsLand? IDK :D
@Fabby I said "Sorry" already.

So we all know what we know because of our experiences... I've worked with a few Iranians is all and you haven't...
@Simon.B :-) No need to apologize:
only 5.5 M people in the world speak Flemish...

@Fabby Do you mean excluding Iran right?! :)

9:52 PM
0:-)
Going back to my studies too: OOM killers and WWI tanks.

interesting combination...
I'll continue writing a C compiler...

@Fabby Would you explain this question before you leave? You believe I should learn Assembler first? Why?
