@doppelgreener You startled me. What happened? :P
Again. :P

11:18 AM
We recently bumped into a spot we needed to investigate more: we can delete spam quickly, and there are adjustments we can make to allow us to delete spam even faster (consistently deleting within about 10 seconds).

[ userscripts ] continuous-integration/travis-ci/pr success on 7d8bd36: The Travis CI build passed

Right now we know we delete most spam in under 20 seconds, but there are some outliers that last minutes, and on rare occasion that might last an hour or more.
We're not sure whether spam on this site is being posted so that we visit the links, or posted so as to use our SEO to boost the target domain in search rankings. Many of us suspect it's more the latter.
(certainly there's "call this number / send an email here" spam that is fishing for our response, but various bits of spam with links embedded might just be SEO exploits)

I question why spammers target this site at all. The SEO gain is minimal since all links automatically get a nofollow and noreferrer

@Magisch Right, which means it might instead be about getting people to visit links.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at end of answer: Mount Exchange 2010 EDB to Exchange 2013 by John Carter on serverfault.com

11:21 AM
@India My questions to you would be -- would consistently deleting posts under a certain time discourage spammers from targeting the site, and reduce the overall spam we get in the first place & have to remove? How fast would that have to be?
Also, what would you say the goal of the kinds of spam we get on this site would be?

@Magisch but if you post the url in the title (which happens a lot), plus the keywords, google would rank it pretty high
Then the result would show the url

tpu- by doppelgreener

its both because many spammer get paid or they are part time script kiddie who test waters
thing is spammers have lot of time and tools in their hand
you should target tor and patterns more aggresively
but what you suggest unfortunately doesnt prevent spammer for being persistent

so, super fast deletion wouldn't do much, you think?

depend on type of spammer not. especial if they get paid

11:25 AM
But who's going to pay for spam that doesn't result in more traffic, because it's deleted quickly?

Do you know why the spam 'ring masters' pay for spam which is deleted?

[ userscripts ] continuous-integration/travis-ci/push success on 98f78fe: The Travis CI build passed

infact one get paid only when spam result in traffic or impression. thats why spammers are aggressive

@India thanks. there's a few layers of spam protection built into the stack exchange software by the developers, and we're basically an independent group of users adding an additional final layer as a community effort. the layers before us would target TOR, though we can't ourselves -- we wouldn't have information about TOR access at this point since we're just reading the posts.

Isn't TOR blocked already?

11:27 AM
@Cerbrus it isn't. sometimes it gets temporarily blocked during an attack.

'kay, makes sense

13
A: Can I access Stack Exchange using Tor?

Mad ScientistUsing TOR to post on SE is perfectly fine, there's no rule against it at all. If you're using a low-rep account, odds are you'll be frustrated by the experience though. You're not the only one using TOR, it's pretty popular with people that commit vote fraud or abuse SE in some other way. There...

@Cerbrus some obscure tor endpoints are not blocked. spammer cycle repeatedly until post can be submitted

@India Only a matter of time
But as you can read, TOR isn't blocked in the first place

11:29 AM
@Cerbrus yes its cat and mouse game

@SmokeDetector software rec question, i've voted to close it
So it sounds like...
- Spam ultimately wants to drive either traffic or SEO impressions.
- People get paid when spam does one of those two.
Most of our spam gets stopped by the Stack Exchange software. However some of it slips through, and that's the spam we deal with. If we were to consistently delete that spam in under 10 seconds, that might discourage some spammers, but most spammers would still persistently spam us because they have the time & willingness to do so?
@India Does that sound right? ^

depends on honesty of provider. there is dashboard showing results of work and its automatic. either you get paid in week or after enough results
I think admins can catch spam providers by requests for monitoring

Do they just check if it was posted or do they check X time later if it got views / is still up?
