@egreg So drinking. :)

6 hours later…
yo'
6:56 AM
Good morning everyone!

7:21 AM
morning

7:57 AM
@yo' Morning
@egreg Do you want to take care of it? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/403522/…
@MartinScharrer Morning

8:37 AM
@yo' Quack!
@MartinScharrer Hey Martin!
@Johannes_B Señor Penguino!

@PauloCereda I have a cold. I am going back to bed. :/

@Johannes_B oh no
@Johannes_B: get well soon

@PauloCereda Thanks :-)

8:57 AM
@DavidCarlisle quack

9:14 AM
@PauloCereda dinner!

@DavidCarlisle oh no

ooh @MartinScharrer was here any chance of a standalone update to work in luatex:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I just important the fix yesterday to the source repository

@MartinScharrer ooh thanks:-)

@DavidCarlisle you are mean

9:21 AM
@MartinScharrer just needs Hideo Umeki to appear from nowhere and update geometry then I think all the main packages are finally luatex compatible again!
Jun 29 at 16:15, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle you are not mean :)

@DavidCarlisle For a moment, I read Hideo Kojima...

@PauloCereda 私はビデオゲームをしません

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle Yup: multimedia is done

@JosephWright: I was going to tell a sodium and hydrogen joke, but NaH...

9:34 AM
@JosephWright shame I can't build luatex any more:(

@DavidCarlisle Go play Minecraft

@DavidCarlisle Huh?

@JosephWright somewhere around 1.04 the makefiles got re-arranged and don't work on cygwin, I assume they'll get fixed when the tl2018 pretests start so I haven't looked that hard at exactly where they fail

10:06 AM
@egreg you have to be really old to remember how to run amstex:-)

@DavidCarlisle ooh

hello, folks!
please i need some help
i got the folloing error
tex capacity exceeded, sorry [input stack size 5000]
in beamer class
i tired to add enumerate to my frame
Should i put my whole code here

@DavidCarlisle And I don't know how to do it with TeXnicCenter: too new for me.
@Educ Note that the enumerate and enumitem packages are incompatible with beamer

@Educ code here doesn't work so well better to add it as a question

okay thanks first i will check the instruction of egreg after that i will post as question
@egreg i just remove the enumitem package and it's work fine thanks so much

10:20 AM
I am having curau now!
Curau (Portuguese pronunciation: [kuˈɾaw]) is a Brazilian sweet custard-like dessert made from the expressed juice of unripe maize, cooked with milk and sugar. The term curau is used mostly the southern states such as São Paulo, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is also called corá (pronounced [koˈɾa]) in Minas Gerais, papa-de-milho [ˈpapɐdʒiˈmiʎu] "corn porridge" in Rio de Janeiro, and canjica [kɐ̃ˈʒikɐ] in the northern half of Brazil (Northeast and North regions). == Typical recipes == Curau recipes typically call for about 1/2 to 2 liters of milk and 1 to 3 cups of sugar for 10 ears of...
@DavidCarlisle, @egreg ^^ :)

@PauloCereda you could use pineapple juice instead of maize for the Hawaiian version, I'm sure it would be a popular variant, just as it is for some other foods...

@DavidCarlisle oh no

10:37 AM
@PauloCereda Would you imagine a Briton adding pineapple juice to their tea?

@egreg that might sparkle a bit of controversy. :)

@egreg fancy a drink ^ ?

11:13 AM
What are clouds made of?

@DavidCarlisle ^^

11:37 AM
Folks, I've got a question

@EmilioPisanty then ask one.

I want a marginal increase in the spacing between $\alpha$ and $S$ in $$T + \alpha S$$
I want to emphasize the role of $\alpha$ as a multiplier

@EmilioPisanty insert \,

@Skillmon that's too big
$$T + \alpha \,S$$
I tried $$T + \alpha \;\! S$$ but that's still too big
hmmm
at least on my system

try $$ T + \alpha \kern 1pt S $$ if that's to big, use 0.5pt or something like that...

11:40 AM
@Skillmon bingo, works wonders
thx
for the record, this was under \usepackage{newtxmath}
apparently that handles spacings somewhat differently than computer modern?

@EmilioPisanty you're welcome. But imho, that's not the right thing to do :) Another possibility to emphasize the multiplier fact would be T + \alpha \cdot S

¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
@Skillmon yeah, I agree that it's a hack
but I need to keep it subtle
the standard spacing paints $\alpha S$ as a single semantic unit
and I need to break it up a bit, without introducing lagoons of whitespace
the computer modern take on $T+\alpha \, S$ does look right
but newtxmath makes that space much bigger

@Skillmon @EmilioPisanty or \mkern 2mu might be more natural than \kern (since it's math) (\, is usually \mkern 3mu)

@DavidCarlisle ah, thanks
lemme give that a go

@DavidCarlisle oh, forget about the \mkern... Thanks for pointing out.

11:50 AM
I did wonder why there isn't a smaller math space than \,

@EmilioPisanty \mbox{\Huge\color{red}$\alpa$}} too subtle if you want something that avoids adding space?

but if you can make \mkern 1mu then that's enough to cover any fringe cases that need smaller spaces
@DavidCarlisle I don't think that would register on my audience's radar

yo'
@egreg Grading exams this weekend, just had a perfect one: 0 points, time to grade: 5 seconds :-)

12:15 PM
@yo' :-) Good job!
@EmilioPisanty Use \mspace{1mu}, which is one third of \,

@egreg is \mspace preferable to \mkern?

@EmilioPisanty It has a more LaTeX compliant syntax

@EmilioPisanty amsmath package wrapper around mkern, as @egreg says the syntax is more conventional using {}

a'ight, \mspace it is
thanks all

@PauloCereda ^^^^^^^

yo'
@egreg The feeling when an exam graded 53 % seems extraordinarily good :-/

@egreg oh no

@PauloCereda he's mean, not like me

@DavidCarlisle ooh

2:06 PM
Stop happening, things.

@PauloCereda not sure if you can see this from outside the UK, but would you pass?

@PauloCereda We should ask another person. Let me do it.
@CarLaTeX How's your thesis going?

@DavidCarlisle OH MY I GOT THEM ALL CORRECTLY

@PauloCereda excellent, you can marry Harry then

Admitelly, I guessed all answers. :)
@egreg :D
MY DUCK SENSE IS TINGLING — Paulo Cereda 3 mins ago
@egreg ^^
@DavidCarlisle Is Kate Middleton available?

2:12 PM
@PauloCereda well they have passed the minimum time before divorce, so technically, yes.

@DavidCarlisle which is one year!

@DavidCarlisle Are you sure the answer to the last question isn't C?
@DavidCarlisle But maybe that's more for Ireland.

@PauloCereda Oh, the real celebrity of the image got cut half off in the lower right corner :(

@samcarter Yes, I was asking myself who's next the duck.
@samcarter Possibly a duckess.

2:28 PM
@egreg Like Paulo's one LOL

Hello, folks!
to add movie file to beamer class
but it doesn't work

@Educ Did you compile two times? What file type are you using? I don't think .mkv is supported. Which of the two answers did you try?

@samcarter oh no

Noun: duckness (uncountable)
  1. The quality of being a duck.
  2. 2003, European Association for American Studies. Conference, Hans Bak, Walter Hölbling, "Natures nation" revisited (page 434)
  3. However, while both designer and creature seem intent on zeroing in on real and pure duckness, this state remains elusive. The Duck is always on the move (both spatially and in terms of its nature), now drawing near, now drawing away […]

@samcarter LOL

2:39 PM
@PauloCereda what is your duckness score?

@samcarter 100% :)

@samcarter Hi, yes i did but with no luck
any help please

3:17 PM
@Educ Can you add you code as text?
@Educ How is your mp4 encoded? media9 only supports H.246 encoded mp4
@Educ Try to compile with pdflatex and not xelatex
@PauloCereda Spoken as a true duck!

Any bibdesk users here? I installed it on my wife's laptop, and it turns out that the obvious first command to try, New Bibliography, doesn't do anything. Known problem?

3:35 PM
Um, quitting and restarting bibdesk cured it. Never mind, I guess. But it does not inspire confidence.

Q: Is there a problem with Beamer in the latest MiKTeX update?

Colin McLartyThis is about MiKTeX Revision 2.9.6360. Immediately after the latest MiKTeX update, my Beamer files stopped compiling. When i tried to compile a file that had been working fine I got a Package installation popup saying: tex\latex\beamer\beamerbasemodes.sty Is missing. It is part of the follo...

please, could someone help me to convert that video from youtube to appropriete format that i can to beamer youtube.com/watch?v=SFTN5d3QDMA

@AlanMunn I gotta run to get me old-school wasted. But how nice of you to ask! I'm swamped these days with work so stopping by to procrastinate. Hope everything is spell checked in the linguists world.
Here is a small christmas gift :) youtube.com/watch?v=VW_z4pXucyk
It's a local taste straight out of amsterdam

@percusse Their aren't many cheques in the linguists' whirled. :)
@percusse I like it. Thanks.

yo'
@egreg You gotta love when the student solves a difficult task that ... he wasn't asked :)

6:46 PM
@percusse Checking my MiKTeX set up now

Is there a compact way to state that an angle must be given in radians?
By compact way, I mean something of the form $x \in \mathbb{R}$.

7:11 PM
@nbro the SI abbreviation is rad. So it should be $\frac{x}{\mathrm{rad}}$ or something like that.

yo'
7:46 PM
@nbro for what? An exam? A math software? A java applet?

2 hours later…
9:29 PM
@yo' Happens all the time.

@egreg Perhaps in maths

@nbro Well the rad unit is just the number 1

@egreg Yes, though it's slightly complicated!

yo'
@JosephWright it's physicists and people further down the stream who make it complicated :D

@yo' :)

9:32 PM
@JosephWright The measure in “radians” of an angle is the ratio of the arc length by the radius, so it's just a number and 1rad=1 by definition.

yo'
@egreg cmon, that still expects that angle is a thing! But actually, this "angle" is defined by the means that sin x shall be the unique solution to y''=-y, y(0)=0, y'(0)=1

@egreg Yes, I know

@yo' From physicists down the stream, they all believe angles are that thing defined like old Euclid did.

yo'
@egreg pauvre pauvre Euclid

10:16 PM
hey TeX wizards, how do I find the font name-code-thing of Chivo Light and Montserrat Extra Light?
i.e. for Iwona Light I've managed to get \fontfamily{iwonal} working
(I only need a single character)

@EmilioPisanty luatex?

but the .sty for Chivo and Montserrat doesn't have an equivalent construct
@DavidCarlisle pdflatex
I'm attempting to follow the instructions here
298
A: How do I use a particular font for a small section of text in my document?

frabjousRegular LaTeX Finding the font name This is actually the hardest part. When you load a regular font package like helvet (which sets the default sans serif font to a Helvetica clone) it issues commands to set up the font using an internal name, which is hidden to regular users. These names tradi...

I only need a single character to use as a drop-cap via lettrine

aren't they opentype fonts?

@DavidCarlisle Montserrat has (O)T1 support listed on CTAN

@DavidCarlisle both are listed as both T1 and opentype

10:21 PM
@EmilioPisanty @JosephWright oh documentation, didn't think of looking at that:-)

does opentypeness matter? the thread above only mentions opentype for the xelatex/lualatex answer, and I'd like to stay with pdflatex

yo'
@EmilioPisanty There's zero support for OTF in pdflatex. And even with T1 fonts it's not that easy

@EmilioPisanty well it would have mattered if they were opentype fonts as pdftex doesn't use them

@yo' but pdflatex does take type1, no?

yo'
@EmilioPisanty not at all directly. In uses them in the end, but the internal pdftex's font format is quite different

10:23 PM
@EmilioPisanty the name you are looking for is
Montserrat-LF
@EmilioPisanty see the fd file for the T1 font encoding here mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/ctan.org/fonts/montserrat/tex/… (and similar names for the font variants)

@DavidCarlisle so to be used as \fontfamily{Montserrat-LF} \selectfont ?

@EmilioPisanty yes assuming you have all the files installed

@DavidCarlisle Miktex marks the package as installed

@EmilioPisanty font support added in the early days required cryptic font names like ptm for times roman as the filename needed to be constructed as ot1ptmr.fd and fit in the 8+3 filenames of MSDOS and ISO format CDs etc, but fonts where the tex support was added this century don't need to be so obscure in their naming

@DavidCarlisle I understand the historical roots ;-). I just feel like every time I try to do anything other than Computer Modern I get dropped into an inescapable maze.

10:30 PM
@EmilioPisanty I've been looking for a way out for 30 years, I still have hope

@DavidCarlisle Blame Joseph?

@JosephWright You've been trapping me on purpose? Typical, I suspected as much.

@DavidCarlisle that gives me Chivo bold, I think =/

@DavidCarlisle I do hire a 'dungeon' ;)

@EmilioPisanty oh quite possibly:I just picked one of the fonts from the fd files in that directory at random
@EmilioPisanty looking at the fd file that font family name is used for them all I think but for example
\DeclareFontShape{T1}{Chivo-TLF}{l}{it}{
      <-> \Chivo@@scale Chivo-LightItalic-tlf-t1

10:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle or maybe just the regular? the large font size makes it harder to judge
@DavidCarlisle but everything is marked under Chivo-LTF

means that \fontfamiliy{Chivo-TLF}\fontseries{l}\fontshape{it}\selectfont will give Chivo-LightItalic-tlf-t1

@DavidCarlisle bingo, yes, that works
what does the .fd file do?

@EmilioPisanty it maps the user syntax like \fontfamiliy{Chivo-TLF}\fontseries{l}\fontshape{it}\selectfont (or common shortcuts like \textbf) to the actual fonts on the filesystem, the snippet I posted a couple of lines up says that in T1 encoding font family Chivo-TLF series l (light) shape it then at all sizes uses Chivo-LightItalic-tlf-t1, sacled to the requested size.

@DavidCarlisle ok, that makes sense
how do I mesh that with the actual font files it's calling?

@EmilioPisanty that is the Chivo-LightItalic-tlf-t1.tfm which is the actual file tex reads (someone has packaged the original font file in a tex compatible way, otherwise it's a lot more involved)
the <-> above is common for scalable fonts, compare with ot1cmr.fd for computer modern

10:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle I can't find any files marked Chivo in Program Files/Miktex

where the declarations look like
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{cmr}{m}{it}%
     {%
      <5><6><7>cmti7%
      <8>cmti8%
      <9>cmti9%
      <10><10.95>cmti10%
      <12><14.4><17.28><20.74><24.88>cmti12%
      }{}

It's definitely loading it

@EmilioPisanty and there are multiple italic fonts at different design sizes
@EmilioPisanty I don't use miktex but are the tex input files under Program Files?

@DavidCarlisle as in, my specific document?
no

@EmilioPisanty no I meant the fonts, if you look at the end of the pdftex log file you will see the path to all fonts used
</usr/local/texlive/2017/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/public/amsfonts/cm/cmsy10.
pfb>
Output written on pp805.pdf (1 page, 32125 bytes).

10:45 PM
@DavidCarlisle ah, I see. It's putting stuff in the user directory
(possibly through calling the installer without the admin? who knows)
so it's finding Chivo
i.e.
\begingroup
\fontfamily{Chivo-TLF}\selectfont The quick brown fox
\endgroup
works
but it isn't finding Montserrat
\fontfamily{Montserrat-LF}\selectfont The quick brown fox
just returns

@EmilioPisanty do you have the fd files locally (the ones I found on ctan)

!pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file Montserrat-Regular-lf-t1--base): Font Montserrat-
Regular-lf-t1--base at 600 not found
@DavidCarlisle neither of those as far as I can see
bizarrely enough

@EmilioPisanty oh so you have the fd files but not the fonts (or not the map file) or ....

@DavidCarlisle not sure where it's found the .fd file

@EmilioPisanty the log file will show that
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\fontfamily{Montserrat-LF}\selectfont The quick brown fox

\end{document}

10:50 PM
I do have a Montserrat-Regular-lf-t1.vf file on AppData\Roaming\MiKTeX\2.9\fonts\vf\public\montserrat

@EmilioPisanty a vf file isn't a real font (it's a "v"irtual "f"ont used for remapping things and faking accents but you need an actual type1 font somewher

@DavidCarlisle hmmmmm

@EmilioPisanty so it should be in some place equivalent to /usr/local/texlive/2017/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/public/montserrat but you may be better to compare with someone who uses miktex (plenty of people on this site, but not me:-)

10:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle yeah, it's not on the core system, it ended up in my user directory
but there is a AppData\Roaming\MiKTeX\2.9\fonts\type1\public\montserrat
with a bunch of .pfb files there
say, Montserrat-Light.pfb

@EmilioPisanty all I know about miktex is that it has user installs and admin system wide installs and if you use a mixture of the two it gets confusing:-) so I can't tell you if that directory is likely to be in your font path,

@DavidCarlisle well, there's the chivo font files in public\chivo, so it can't be going that differently

@EmilioPisanty that means that your map-files is not up-to-date. Try if it works if you run updmap on a command line.

@EmilioPisanty I would guess your map file didn't get updated :/Users/episanty/AppData/Local/MiKTeX23:52 02/12/2017/2.9/pdftex/config/pdftex.map either directly or by including other files
@UlrikeFischer got in first! (and she does know about miktex so I'll stop guessing) @EmilioPisanty

@UlrikeFischer updmap runs silently, then the output doesn't change

11:05 PM
@EmilioPisanty What happens if you add \pdfmapline{=montserrat.map} to your document?

@UlrikeFischer preamble or document?
either way, no output
same error

Do you have a montserrat.map? How did you install the font (I didn't quite follow the discussion, just came in)

@UlrikeFischer I installed the montserrat package from the (non-admin) package manager
I do have a montserrat.map
under fonts/map/dvips/montserrat/montserrat.map
ditto for a Chivo.map

Ah. Sorry its a bit late, it should be \pdfmapfile{=montserrat.map} not pdfmapline.

@UlrikeFischer yeah, that does the job
is there a way to bake that in?

11:24 PM
Well normally it should happen when you call updmap (and it did happen for me). When did you install the package?

@UlrikeFischer earlier today
same session
would a restart help, or something like that?

Run updmap --verbose >updmap.log and then show the log-file.

@DavidCarlisle Thanks for your help, I reckon it was worth it

The map-file is really not there. Deinstall and reinstall the montserrat package. If the problem persist make a bug report github.com/MiKTeX/miktex-packaging. Show your minimal example and say that the map file is not activated.

@UlrikeFischer ok, thanks
