@Ryan Depends on what's allowed. Find Familiar, Animate Dead, and creature conjuration spells are all fun options (until the GM gets frustrated with your small army).

If you have a bunch of spare cranberries, mash 'em up and chuck 'em into a bottle of vodka
Then in a day or two, strain them out and drink the vodka
You can do the same thing with two teabags of black or green tea instead of cranberries, also excellent

@Ryan I picked fireball, counterspell, bigby's hand, destructive wave
but there are some new spells in xanathar's that are really cool. and there are more options out there besides those, too.
more spell options is huge for being a bard
and you can get things (like destructive wave) that just aren't available until higher levels for the class they're made for (unless you're a storm cleric...stealing bard thunder on stealing destructive wave)

I imagine a lot of it depends on what your group already has. Magical Secrets sounds like it works best to fill in gaps in the group: shoring up weaknesses and reinforcing strengths

Who needs to shore up weaknesses when the entire group can just focus on one thing and just avoid situations where they may have to do something else

@SPavel Because players can't always avoid situations that they are not prepared for

8:11 PM
the group is overfull so varies a little based on who RSVPs the fastest but usually its 2 Paladins, one Warrior, a Sorcerer, an Illusionist (Wizard), and myself the Bard. Then there's either a Cleric, another Paladin, or another Sorcerer depending on the signups for that week.

@MikeQ I was being facetious; in my experience, players tend to forget that not everything is in their control, and over-build for damage, then die immediately in combat because they did not invest in defenses

oh and a Druid is one of the regulars. So usual regulars is Bard, Druid, 2x Paladin, Warrior, and then not sure I guess the Cleric is next most consistent. But he's a Tempest Cleric

@SPavel Their investment in defense is killing things before they have to worry about being hurt themselves :p

@Adam Well that's their plan, but it doesn't work because they also have no scouting capability
So they just walk in the direction of the plot, wander into a fight unprepared, and then complain all the way up until the enemy is dead

I don't need scouting when I can blow up the tri-county area with a single spell!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
ahem...right...sorry, lost my cool there for a second

8:14 PM
"This guy is way too OP, dude, why did you make him so strong, look how we are dying" --PCs while the monster literally has single digit hit points left

Q: Why does the chat link on the right-hand sidebar only show up sometimes?

A_S00I currently have https://rpg.stackexchange.com/ open in three different tabs. In one of them, the right-hand sidebar has links to two rpg.se-relevant chat rooms: In the other two, there's just ads (example 1, example 2) How is this determined? Is it randomized each time I load the page? ...

Since going behind the screen, it's amazing to me how often the players will leave an encounter thinking "that was close" and I'll be thinking "I was never worried at all, you guys smoked em like salmon"

@NautArch Only thing that stands out to me would be Toll the Dead - kinda like Eldritch Blast really

Is this for the 3rd level secrets?
Having fireball as an on demand AOE that you can upcast later is huuuuuge

@NautArch Magical Secrets is 6th level
Toll the Dead is new cleric cantrip from Xanathar's
Mantle of Inspiration just seems like the most powerful use of the Bardic Inspiration Die. The extra HP alone is nice but even more than that is giving them all more movement

8:23 PM
It's a cool use of the die, but cutting words is also great
Very useful
I don't think I'd use secrets on a cantrip

Seems like to balance things Cutting Words should use one die but now affect the number of creatures up to your Charisma modifier
Mantle of Inspiration at level 4 I can give 4 party members +5 HP and let them move their full speed immediately. And that's only 1 Bardic Inspiration

For me, it's still the secrets. Take any 3rd level or lower spell available is big.
That's not a huge amount of hp
I'm a believer that the best defense is a good offense

no the HP isn't the point its that movement
Warrior couldn't close the distance in time or Rogue just finished off one of the enemies... Inspire! And now they can both move immediately

Preventing a hit or an ability check or reducing damage could be bigger
Does your party find themselves nit able to close distance?

we don't fight terribly often so far. more RPG in this group doing Curse of Strahd
haven't gone into the castle yet

8:29 PM
Hmm, if more rpg glamour could be really good

@NautArch Cutting Words is also really useful if an enemy succeeds a saving throw against a spell, and bards have a variety of powerful "save-or-die" spells.

Don't think you can use it against saving throws

When a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you makes an Attack roll, an ability check, or a damage roll, you can use your reaction to expend one of your uses of Bardic Inspiration, rolling a Bardic Inspiration die and subtracting the number rolled from the creature’s roll.

Yup, no savijg throws

Ability checks don't include saving throws?

8:31 PM
Nope, they are different things

Oh. Well, apparently my GM doesn't know that.... I should probably tell them.

But for secrets, there may be some good spells in other classes
@MikeQ Jiminy, allowing that is an enormous boon
I'd suggest letting him know

hmm maybe I'm roleplaying too much. I don't see how a spell like Fireball fits the Bard thematically

The easiest way to keep it straight is that Ability checks are typically something you choose to attempt to succeed on a task. Saving Throws are usually something that you are forced to do to resist something happening to you.

great spell for sure but doesn't seem like something my bard would know as a silver tongued charlatan

8:33 PM
Speak softly and carry a big explosive stick

@Ryan power chord

Everybody needs an insurance policy after all.

@Ryan Well sure, and that's the whole idea behind the lore bard. They've studied a wide breadth of magical knowledge outside the realm of "charm wenches and get money".

mine is supposed to be a story teller with card and knife tricks. sleight of hand type stuff, knife throwing, etc
guess I could go Gambit and make Fireball my Ace of Spades lol

But why rely on card tricks when you can summon a demon army instead?

8:36 PM
@MikeQ because not everyone is trying to optimize?

@Ryan Fireball is one of the most rock-and-roll spells

I'm not suggesting the 3.5 route of "optimize and get the most powerful spells in order to win the game"
What I am suggesting is "gain really powerful options so you have more ways of doing fun and crazy stuff"
And there are plenty of non-bard spells that would fit the whole "knife-twirling trickster" idea you're going for

@Adam I sometimes ask a player to roll a d20. I don't say "make a save" and sometimes it's for something influencing another character. RNG doesn't care who rolls.

hmm reading on to higher levels I like College of Whispers too. The Psychic Blade part doesn't interest me much but the rest all sound awesome

8:43 PM
17

Hey, I made my save versus spousal objection. I wonder if she has a feat that will overwrite that.

yeah think College of Whispers is the winner the more I read about it
Frightened is a lot more powerful than I realized, "A frightened creature has disadvantage on Ability Checks and Attack rolls while the source of its fear is within line of sight."

@Ryan Is the campaign heavy on roleplay and intrigue aspects?

@MikeQ intrigue aspects?

As in, a good amount of focus interacting with NPCs, as opposed to just raw combat and dungeon crawling. Social stuff.

8:49 PM
oh yeah its very big on that!

Ah. Then yes, the college of Whispers can be a very fun path.
Venomous Blades doesn't scale well at higher levels, but it's compensated by the potential shenanigans you can accomplish with Mantle of Whispers.

hmm I hadn't gone proficient in Intimidation. For College of Whispers I wonder if that'll become a problem. I did Persuasion and Deception
trying to decide on Expertise now. Thinking Deception and either Persuasion or Sleight of Hand (I like to pickpocket things)

I know that deception is a must-have, but I don't believe that the intimidation skill is explicitly needed

wish Perception wasn't so overused in 5e. I spent one of my skills to be proficient in it

@Ryan I wish it wasn't quite so necessary too. I also wish dexterity wasn't so powerful

9:03 PM
yeah its weird that Dex is so much more powerful than Str.

...hm. It'd be interesting to apply 4e's dual-stat approach to defenses, to skills.
Or just go full Cortex and assign abilities to skills on a case-by-case narrative basis.

a 4th level Bard can know 4 level 2 spells and only 3 level 1 spells right?
did I do my math right? :D
I knew 5 at 1st level at 2. So I can change one spell and do 4 1st level and 2 2nd level at 6. Then I can again change one spell making it 3 1st level and 4 2nd level

9:34 PM
You should be able to know at most 4 2nd level spells. At char lvl (CL) 1, you know 4 first level spells. At CL 2 you know 5 first level spells. At CL 3 you can learn one second level spell, and swap a first level for a second level, giving you 4/2. At CL 4 you can again learn a spell and swap out a first level spell for a second level one, giving you 3/4
So, you are correct.

thanks @Adam

...why hasn't D&D switched out numerical spell levels for something else, like alphabetical or colors or something?

I always liked the way Final Fantasy VII handled spell slots as part of the weapons. That was great. Then it got terrible in Final Fantasy VIII
not that either would work well for D&D

"At level 4 you know two orange spells and three red spells."
@Ryan Masters of Umdaar has something kinda like it.

in any case I need to pick one more 1st or 2nd level spell. Just made a post about Blindness/Deafness. Kinda torn on it, Silence, Detect Thoughts, or Hold Person.

9:45 PM
> Hold Person. You can use Athletics instead of Empathy to help another person recover from a mental consequence.

@BESW Awww. <3

lol
I see what you did in that instance
that stunt belongs on cute animal companions

most of them wouldn't have arms but I think it still works

see this disappoints me Blindness does a ton for melee fighting while Deafness does almost nothing
If you can't hear you're going to be hard pressed to fight

10:47 PM
I'm sure I have already told this to someone, in English. How could it not be you chatizens?

Ben
@Miniman thanks again for the character sheets. It was a bit clunky but all in all it worked out well.

@Ben Good to hear! Any feedback?

Ben
I was going to come back after the game but a fight broke out on the street - massive brawl. 6 Cop cars showed up

@Ben Yikes.

@Ben that looks far more concerning than the shenanigans of my Pathfinder party.

Ben
10:53 PM
Yeah it was pretty scary. One guy got sent to hospital for a possible punctured lung, another got a concussion, 2 guys got arrested and I think the guy that started it all may have been high on fumes :/

@Ben I hope I don't sound too patronizing when I say "that's why people shouldn't be high on fumes".

Ben
Lol. Nah you're good haha. I mean, I don't know the whole story about the guy - apparently he was visiting from Brisbane or something (how people found that out in the space of half an hour about some stranger in the street is beyond me) - but regardless, the guy obviously has a problem.
I have to go in to the police station this afternoon to give a statement - even though I wasn't even involved. I'm not a big guy and I am not willing to put myself in harms way, so I stayed back as much as I could, but I had to make sure that the other guys were alright
But, after everything calmed down it was midnight, so I just crashed

I've been in the close proximity of a (less dangerous) fight, once. I understand your feelings of self-preservation.

hey there @Zachiel and @NautArch

Anyway: when you don't want people to run away, don't cast Obscuring Mist

11:06 PM
hey as well @Ben and @Asteria

Hey hey @Shalvenay

Ben
o/

how're things going?

@Asteria you look familiar, where have I seen you? (Probably, some answer or some question around the network...)
@Shalvenay Work's been tiresome this week. Also, no D&D session this week.

@Zachiel erm my question about two jerks I was going to play D&D with was in the top charts once upon a time, it might be that. I pop in here sometimes too

11:08 PM
@Zachiel ah. we'll see what the weekend brings I suppose

@Asteria Ooooh, I remember that one. Not the best thing to remember someone for, I guess. Whatever.
@Shalvenay relatives. Relatives who vote for the most ragtag political party we have around here, with a passion. And a 2-hours trip to go there and again to come back.

Ben
Huzzah for family gatherings
I honestly really do take my own family dynamic for granted

@Zachiel yeah, will have relatives in the picture as well

Smoke-bathing chimneystack rook: photo by Tom Kennedy https://www.birdguides.com/articles/photo-of-the-week-15-21-november/
"Chimneystack Rook" would be a good name for a cat burglar.

Ben

11:19 PM
Often that's a failure to communicate genre.

@Ben sigh

@Ben makes the PCs do laps in a swimming pool filled with liquids of a progressively lower and lower pH until they say 'uncle'

In most stories we see/read, main characters regularly do obviously lethal things and survive.

Ben
@BESW Story of my life haha

I'd wave goodnight to everybody, but I'm the one that's going to bed. Goodnight, me.

11:20 PM
It shouldn't be surprising that when we're given the opportunity to act out stories, we do the things we see in stories.
@Zachiel ttfn

@Zachiel niiiiiiight

Ben
@BESW I saw an article about that - the players thought "my PC is essential to the story, therefore I can hold off this invading army so my friends can escape, and we'll just rejoin later"
@Zachiel [waaaaave]

@Ben annnnnnd now you're dead

What's weird is that so many GMs default to "realistic" depictions of danger which would be completely out of place in the inspiring material.

@Zachiel lol night

11:23 PM
@Ben It works in the stories! You lose a few scenes, come back with some scars and something to push the plot further like a bit of information, or an assassin stalking you.

@BESW On the opposite side of the coin, I hate when GM's don't punish PC's for doing obviously lethal things.

"We're going to tell epic stories about heroes who can wield inhuman power, but if you do anything that'd likely kill an untrained normie I'll mock you for being stupid while I kill your character."

@BESW I dunno. If a player made a heroic sacrifice and tried to hold off an army by themselves, I'd try to reward that. But when a player tries to swim in lava just to see what happens, I'm not sure that's the kind of epic story that needs rewarding.

I play with a group where we had to communicate with the dead to gather information about our target. One guy decides that rituals and whatnot are too much effort, so he slashed his own throat. Well, yeah, you can talk to the dead guy now, but you also be dead???
Nah, says the GM, you wake back up and your throats all healed. You fine.

@Miniman Again, communication.
Consequences are important. Character death is usually the most boring consequence possible and doesn't usually "teach" anything useful.

Ben
11:30 PM
I think that's the imbalance. Players feel like their character is some kind of legendary hero with hidden power and potential, whereas really, there are a lot of other people, creatures, and extra-planar beings that are just as strong, and stronger.

If a player is making decisions that seem obviously stupid, stop and ask about it.

Ben
"You are average, if only a little above, at best"

@Miniman idly wonders if a fire elemental would float or sink in your average lava

@Shalvenay ...how salty is the rock? [grin]

@Shalvenay Well, given the nature of lava, wouldn't they just walk over the top of it?

11:31 PM
Like, seriously, most stories where a GM is baffled by a player's dumb choices don't seem to include the GM confirming with the player, out of character, that they're making the choice the GM thinks they're making and that they have all the information the GM thinks they have, or even asking what they hope the outcome will be.

Ben
@BESW On a scale from [low grumbling] to [loudly voices their opinion about it at any available opportunity]?

@Miniman if it's a thick and gooey enough lava, maybe so :)
hey there @ACuriousMind

@Shalvenay Yeah, I was just looking at lava composition. But now that I think about it, a fire elemental should really float in air.

@Shalvenay heyhey

...an earth elemental could probably phase through lava, though.

11:34 PM
@BESW yeah, and I've had cases where I've pointed out to another player that they're misinterpreting my character's actions only to have the other player basically claim that my doing so is dishonest

@Shalvenay Yes, well. That's a different but related kind of communication problem, I think.

@Miniman kind of a flaming apparition even?

@Shalvenay I mean, the only way a fire elemental makes sense is if it's a being made of burning gases, right?

Ben
@Miniman There's too much science in your magic theory

No, it's a being of elemental fire. Duh.

11:37 PM
@Ben Normally I'm the one saying that to other people :P

Ben
Oh, that reminds me - I need to polish off my Corruption system
Also @Miniman I used an Arcana check to "dispel" the magic trap [cringe]

@Ben Hey, whatever works, right?

@Miniman in a way, yeah :) I think the "burning apparition" makes sense given that, even

However...

Ben
But, in my defense it still did backfire a little. Like, instead of just fading, it kind of backfired, but harmlessly (the Sorc lost his eyebrows)

11:40 PM
If you go by Ptolemaic astronomy, a fire elemental should still rise.

well, they'd need some means of buoyancy control in order to not float off, flailing about as they go :P

Elements rise or sink toward their respective elemental sphere, and fire is the highest of the spheres, between the Earth and the Moon.
Yeah, a fire elemental would need some balancing element to avoid rising up like smoke.

Ben
Quick question - what is charisma used for in 5e? (If someone can get me the excerpt from the PHB that'd be good enough)

From the SRD:
> Charisma measures your ability to interact effectively with others. It includes such factors as confidence and eloquence, and it can represent a charming or commanding personality.
A Charisma check might arise when you try to influence or entertain others, when you try to make an impression or tell a convincing lie, or when you are navigating a tricky social situation. The Deception, Intimidation, Performance, and Persuasion skills reflect aptitude in certain kinds of Charisma checks.

Ben
@BESW Ok. I have 3 corruption systems - Madness, Necrotic, and Bloodlust

11:43 PM
@BESW That was hella fast.

that 'stache is terrifying

@Ben PHB says the same thing, in case you're wondering.

Ben
When I was talking to my GMing friend he suggested that I use Charisma to compare the stages of the corruption. For example, when they reach 1/4 of their Charisma in Corruption points, then negatives start to apply.
However, I don't think that would be an accurate measurement, especially since not all players have an equal charisma stat

Wis, Con, Cha. Or if you prefer dual-stat features (I do!): Wis/Int, Dex/Con, Str/Cha.

Ben
So I was thinking instead - yup. That's what I was thinking @BESW haha

11:48 PM
@Miniman Fastest Google in the chat. [blows smoke off fingers]

Ben
Did you create those in comparison to the three systems I mentioned? Cos I can see that working - Wis/Int for madness, Dex/Con for Bloodlust, and Str/Cha for Necrotic

Yup.
Except I was going in order.
Wis/Int for Madness, Dex/Con for Necrotic, Str/Cha for Bloodlust.

Ben
Yeah fair enough :)

They map to what you're losing control of as the corruption progresses.

Ben
Awesome. So if you say that reaching the maximum value of both of those in corruption points makes the PC unplayable, after 6 sessions, how much would you value a corruption point?
So, for example, say the fighter has 16 Str and 10 Cha, making it 26 in total.
Would you say a minor effect would be like, 2 points?

11:55 PM
How do you acquire corruption, and what does the endpoint look like narratively?

Ben
Spell attacks (taking necrotic damage for example), using cursed items (would be slightly higher but a 1-time application), as well as personal choices
