@Christopher2EZ4RTZ The unit is amp/hour (amp per hour). You pluralize the numerator (amps per hour).

@Pavel so is dating but people do it anyway :P

Anonymous
If you're writing it with symbols, you leave off pluralization (A/hr)

@Mego wow my life is odd

lets just use Ah and call it a day?

Back to the original point...
You're going to buy an iPhone 8/X anyway aren't you ಠ_ಠ

3:01 AM
me???

Anonymous
@Downgoat 1) It would be A*hr 2) That's a different unit

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Downgoat

@Mego idk what you're talking about

@Pavel oh lol

@Pavel I'll likely buy the 8 on behalf of an organization because we're doing something with ARKit and all and we need to test with new sensors etc.

3:03 AM
@Downgoat But 1k for a PHONE???
I can buy a nice computer for that much!

Anonymous
@Downgoat Amp-hour (Amp times hour) is not the same as Amp/hour (Amp per hour)

I think that's just the excuse you're using to justify overspending that much on an iPhone.

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ its ok I'm not paying other people are

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ nice isn't the right word. Top-of-the-line is a bit better.

Anonymous
Let's not attack others based on how they choose to spend money.

@Downgoat Good for you, then. :P

@Mego ok
@Downgoat oh ok all is good

@Mego ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ he used Amp/hour

The iPhone X face unlock thing has the curious security issue that you could unlock someone else's phone by holding it in front of them.

@Pavel why would I want to overspend money? O_o
@HelkaHomba Does it unlock if you hold a picture of someone in front of it lol

3:06 AM
@HelkaHomba I don't understand how that is supposed to be new. Windows has supported that since windows 8 and android for so long ;P

@Downgoat You don't, but you want a shiny new iPhone.

@Pavel that's not how this works, I won't even own the iPhone

Which is way overpriced
@Downgoat Well I see that now that you've explained how this works

@Downgoat No, it does fancy 3d stuff. But e.g. police could unlock someone's phone by holding it in front of them. Apple was against giving police phone access, remember.

o_o I just found out you can buy brand new Windows Phone for 30 dollars.
That's really cheap.

It is pretty pathetic though how a \$800 billion company can barely compete with tech start-ups in shenzhen though
@Pavel People don't call it worthless for no reason :P

@HelkaHomba They claim it works even if you have a hat+sunglasses on.

oh wait I have a better windows phone joke

I'm... skeptical.

the price is higher than the amount of users it has

3:08 AM
@Downgoat Shenzhen? Isn't that the Zachtronics game

ikr sick burn

Ok so that is mean windows phones are really good

Also a place in China

But the appstore is garbage.

That is the problem

3:09 AM
If I could have a Windows Phone that could run Android apps, that would be amazing.
Without, you know, the crippling performance issues and instabilities of emulation.

Guys I have 200 dollar graphing software and can't get it to graph an equation without data points

@HelkaHomba Now I'm confused.
What does this place have to do with anything?

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ desmos didn’t cut it?
Pro Tip: do not drop phone in oven while cooking pizza

Desmos is great and all, but there's a reson people buy Mathematica even though W|A is free.
This is the same sort of thing

I have logger pro

3:12 AM
@Downgoat Oh thaks I was about to do that.

Get on my level

@Downgoat DID THIS HAPPEN
DID YOU ACTUALLY DO THAT

@Downgoat I would ask for pictures but your phone is in a pizza right now :/

@Pavel Looks like OnePlus and Huawei and more live there. Smartphone makers like Downgoat alluded to

Ah, I see.
@Downgoat God damn hooves, man.

3:13 AM
Huawei is the best
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ exactly

Huawei seem cool, but Motorolla came out to a better deal at my budget.

@Pavel they tried but it somehow turned into WSL
Project Astoria

Yep

@Pavel how much budget

~250 dollars

3:15 AM
I think his phone actually hit the pizza since he is gone

Also, Huawei put lots of modifications into the version of Android they distribute, which bothers me a lot. Even if those modifications are good.

Wonder if Fuchsia will ever take over for Android. (Con: It's a bigger pain to spell.)

To be honest, I kind of don't want it too.
I like how Android is Linux-based, and has to be open source. Fuchsia is licensed under Apache/MIT so phone manufacturers would be free to insert hidden proprietary things without the consumer knowing.

I'm fairly certain they do that already.

Aren't they not allowed to because GPL
Because if they do this is quite concerning.

3:21 AM
Apps aren't covered by the operating system's license, and system apps can do whatever they want.

@Dennis hi

o/

How was your day?

Uneventful.

In a good or bad way?

3:24 AM
@Dennis Where woud custom skins, e.g. Samsung's TouchWiz fit in?

@Downgoat what happened to the pizza?

They have apps that can root your phone. I think they can do whatever they want. Which is disturbing, slightly.

My phone is already rooted, so...
@HelkaHomba Probably a system app as well. Don't know a lot about Samsung.

Every time I tried to root my tablet it never worked. I generally ended up having to wipe it when a large update came out :P

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ I hate change, so uneventful is difficult to beat.

3:28 AM
(I think) my phone won't be getting Android Oreo, so I might flash it on there later and take the excuse to root my phone at the same time.

@Dennis Ah, I know how you feel. I went from school (4 hours AP Calc right at the end) to work for 7 hours to home and homework
The change is I used to not have work :P

Actually nevermind, I just found out my phone will be getting Android O
Which is great

Android O?

Android versions are alphabetical.
The latest version is Android Oreo

Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo

3:30 AM
RIP blobmojis you will be missed.

I am at 6.x.x :P so idk how far I am behind

I actually like those far more than the new ones, I hope there will be a way to use the old ones.

I like the blobmojis

@Christopher2EZ4RTZ Current is 7. Oreo is 8.

@Pavel ok so not too bad

3:33 AM
Much funnier

Much better

Those look like and don't look like the blobmojis at the same time. Maybe they are blobmojis, and I don't use emoji enough.

Can we have a moment of silence for @Downgoat's pizza?

I'm actually not sure.

3:39 AM
Most stupid thing I saw all day.

3:55 AM
@Christopher2EZ4RTZ pizza is ok did not land in it

More importantly what happened to the phone

I'm just glad the Pizza is okay.

@Downgoat I can now sleep easily
@Pavel Pizza>Phone
You can buy more phone but you can't replace that pizza

You... you could.. always just... buy more pizza?

But it won't be the same
You replace your phone every few years but never pizza

4:06 AM
The phone would be very not the same
The entire emoji set could go to shit

But the pizza is the important thing here
@Downgoat At least goats know that pizza is safe is better then phone dropping :P

Pizza is human, personal, each pizza is unique and special, the same phone can be used again and again to do the same thing, but each pizza is single use, infinitely more valuable.

@ATaco I ate high school cafeteria pizza today. Pizza may be human and personal, but some humans are garbage.

🍕>📱

@HyperNeutrino Now it tends to stop at 100 :D - You will (probably) (soon) manage to tie me again

4:23 AM
Make your own pizza. Be sure to use bread flour.

Sounds like effort

Code golf is effort.

That's why I don't code golf
I just hang around for the conversation

@Pavel you what

I mean occasionally I try to FGITW some really simple challenge that crops up
But yeah too much work

4:34 AM
@Pavel 0/10

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I used to come to see the insane things you people do, now I come for TNB. I wouldn't call myself a code-golfer.
I like writing challenges though.
That's fun.

I code golf a bit more often, all whilst advancing RProgN2.

I have 3.2k reputation, and am in the top 5% this year. I'm unsure how this happened.

4.6k with the top 4%, fear me.

6:46 AM
@LeakyNun This is because SWI-Prolog's constraint library is not powerful enough to automatically deduce that 2^X #= 0 is impossible. I had submitted an issue on github about this but this has not been improved yet afaik.
So it succeeds because it creates the constraint 2^L #= 0 without realizing it cannot be satisfied
Since you don't request a value for L it wont try any.
If you do request one, it will infinite loop
I could look into improving it myself and submitting a pull request but I don't have time right now

2 hours later…
8:51 AM
@ASCII-only I intentionally ignored the invite because I'm not interested in re-inventing the wheel
@cairdcoinheringaahing I think it might be better if loops operate off the Dump rather than the Cell
otherwise you can't reliably make any sort of loop
in BrainFlump right now we need to do ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++. to print H, in brainfuck we can just do ++++++[>++++++++++++<-]>. So it should be possible to do something similar in BrainFlump if loops operate on the Dump rather than the Cell

9:35 AM
@Mayube :| it's not reinventing the wheel
@Mayube the wheel has already been reinvented

@ASCII-only "The wheel" has centuries of engineering and improvement behind it. The "reinvention" you speak of is a somewhat rounded rock

9:58 AM
@Mayube well. Minecraft is spaghetti
@Mayube sure it's improved. But mods are a pain to keep conforming to API
What if Minecraft had a built-in mod API
Not only making it stable, bit also reducing code size by orders of magnitude

they talked about it for ages, they won't do it though

@Mayube which is why we should implement it ourselves :P
@Mayube and really? Where's the improvement
Who calls terracotta an improvement

> it doesn't have the end, endermen, enchanting, potions, nether quartz, new combat, shields, blazes, improved world gen, villages, savhannah/dark forest biomes, strongholds, mineshafts, emeralds, witches, redstone comparators, redstone detectors, droppers, sprinting, creative mode

@Mayube yes, those aren't that hard to reimplement

and with the exception of like.. 3 of those things, all those were added between beta 1.7.3 and full release 1.0
also this is way off topic for TNB

10:02 AM
Oops

2 hours later…
12:02 PM
@Mayube Rather typical for The Nineteenth Byte

we moved the discussion to ppcg gaming anyway
hey @Mr.Xcoder wanna golf some Python2?

@Mayube depends on how large it is, on mobile. Why?
Btw I do want to golf.

It's pretty small ish, 545 bytes right now across 34 lines

Link?

Here ya go

12:04 PM
Ok, give me some time :-)

are you... golfing... your interpreter...???

yes

also aside from loops being a bit derpy, BrainFlump is complete :D

yaaay

12:05 PM
Here's Hello World

yeah, loops are too derpy to golf it right now

@Mayube will arrive home very soon and then I'll send it to you. i see some immediate golfing to be done

@HyperNeutrino D: but what about BrainFlee?
@Mr.Xcoder awesome :D

I made a completely different language called BrainFlump ._. it was your idea for the BF-Dump thing :P
@Mayube I will add that once I figure out how to make a tree work with single value in and single value out

12:07 PM
fair

I'm thinking of standard filling order for binary trees and then taking the root out each time and shifting the larger branch up

Brb eating

@HyperNeutrino what if there are 2 roots then?

uh what?
how would that happen?

Tree:

  X
 / \
X   X

12:10 PM
yes

what happens when the root is removed?

the child with more nodes below it becomes the root and the other child is added as a child to the new root

and in the case of a tie?

if the tree looks exactly as above

12:11 PM
  X
   \
    X
The new tree would become that
> tree

fair ebnough

The problem is how to remove the root when there are no children left. The way I usually do trees is by writing a class for a node which stores its parent, children, and value, and then I only need to track the root object, but when the last node is removed, that doesn't really work :P
One way I could do it is write the tree as a tuple like I have it in the parser for BrainFlex
Alternatively, I can have an extra "superroot" node above the root that doesn't really exist but I can use it to keep track of nodes
I have a new idea: "datatype" where push XORs the current seed with the new value and pop/peek generates a random number using the current seed
may make coding in it very difficult*

*slight under-exaggeration

@HyperNeutrino Is it even possible to program in
How would you increment

good question
idk actually :P :P
anyway gtg history class o/

12:31 PM
So, I added Palindromizer built-in to Recursiva. It seems like they can be used more than I had imagined!!

> Palondromizer

@ASCII-only *palindromizer :D

@Mayube aren't roots supposed to be above

@Mods I'm a bit unsure what to do in regards to this edit: codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/posts/12696/revisions
1. I'm generally against editing existing, voted answers.

@Mayube Should I change that, or do you want to?

2. He mentions doing s.join() when s is null. That's a runtime error, so I don't even see why its an issue.
3. He isn't in chat nor has he made any comment on my post, so I can't just @reply to him

@NathanMerrill You can @reply to editors as well

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill I would revert the edit and encourage them to write their own answer or have a conversation before editing a meta opinion post

@cairdcoinheringaahing There's no popup for his name. You sure?

2:12 PM
@NathanMerrill Pretty sure. Take a look at this

cool, thanks. I feel much better about rolling back an edit if I can start a conversation
does the @name have to be their full name, or can I still do a partial name?
like in chat
oh, that's on the post too
ignore me :)

@cairdcoinheringaahing I have no idea how your L() function works, so you fix it :P
Also your loops don't work right now
+++(-) should be a terminating program, but it doesn't seem to be

@Mayube Hmm, I'll take a look at that, after finishing Jelly training

@OlivierGrégoire Why did you delete this answer? I actually agree

2:28 PM
yeah if you want to golf don't use Java in the first place so... yeah :P
I agree if it says "no input" there should be "no input"

@ATaco you can still access the root if you plant tree normally

yeah it's called dig up the tree

@Poke Do you agree in the case of Java, or all languages?

@HyperNeutrino you don't really need to 'dig' up tree roots that's generally only for like small plants

true
there's a trail near my house where if you're not careful you'll trip over the tree roots. It's been paved at least twice in my lifetime :P

2:37 PM
@HyperNeutrino oh wow and AFAIK neutrinos have very long lifetime :P

huh :P

@NathanMerrill I was only thinking about java but I suppose I agree for other languages as well. Consider a recursive function with a base case:public void foo(int bar) { if (bar == 0) return; foo(bar - 1); }

well they don't really interact with anything so...

@Poke right. I'm totally cool with that.

hmm maybe that's not the best example

2:39 PM
In fact its really common in production languages to have a recursive function that forces you to pass in "empty" values
that it then uses later

it may be common for languages to require something like that
but best practices would suggest you write a function in a way that it's easy to use and hard to misuse
so if the first call needs an empty value
maybe you write an overloaded method signature that only takes the one parameter
i guess i can't argue best practices in code golf, though

Anonymous
@Downgoat They have very short lifetimes in their reference frames, but because they move so fast, relativistic effects make them look long-lived to us

right, you can make a wrapper method. I just don't think that the wrapper method is needed on this site. That's my personal opinion
as far as the issue of gaining type information through static methods: I think its a fantastic abuse of the fact that we still don't require types on parameters. It's easily the meta I disagree with the most, and it's nice to see that people are abusing it like they should.

use varargs lol

@NathanMerrill hmm I guess I can get behind this...

2:44 PM
@NathanMerrill can’t you have an overload which calls another overload with default values?
or are talking about like C

@Downgoat read down...

@NathanMerrill I also like this abuse but I hate that it can be used in lambdas without typed parameters
so i guess we're in the same boat

3:28 PM
@Mayube Error found and corrected. Loops should work now

We need a sed generator. Pass in a "before" file, pass in an "after" file, get back a sed that converts the before to the after

@Mayube Too complicated for me :P If you can figure it out though, it should be interesting to see

@cairdcoinheringaahing Do they also check a random value from the dump now, rather than the cell?

@Mayube They do now, yes

Awesome

3:33 PM
@Mayube ping me if you want me to do anything. I may not be always available though

roger

@Fatalize but it does know that 2^L #= 3 has no solution
