3:00 PM
Are you talking about /r/place?

and the resulting clones, yes

the clones? heh
they'll likely all be crap I guess

it's one of those things that kinda works once, and never again?

3:01 PM
no idea if that's still up btw.
so be careful if visiting, I'm not going to visit here from work

c'est non

but it was awomes

DNS lookup failed
so its not up at all
Guys, help place the super user logo on that site
:P

Hey all o/

Hey @bertieb

3:03 PM
Long time no complain about stuff not working see

that moment when you accidentally step on your power strip
and are inches away from shutting off your work machine
#CableLivesMatter

@varfirstName at an old job
there was a huge power bar thing on the floor in the server room

and you stepped on it?

because servers been moved etc and not enough sockets at the time or something
haha no
the sound of WIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH becoming wwwwirrrrhhhhhh is disconcerting
someone else did XD

3:06 PM
@varfirstName I stepped on a certain well-known manufacturer's magnetic, no-accidentally-pulling-your-laptop-to-the-ground cord at the weekend, and it dragged it into... the fortuitously-open drawer below it

litterally he turned off an entire rack from memory.
I remember I was at a console typin something

Holy shit how

and about 4 people looked at him, as he stepped backwards, mouthing 'noooooo'
click wiiiiiiiiiiir

yep that's the sound..
you guys ought to see our server room

there was like.... 15+ racks

3:08 PM
it's beautiful

so it was still noticably loud, but you noticed the difference
@varfirstName why so?
take photos.... make sure to focus on the postit notes with the passwords on em

hahaha
very funny

Quick sanity check, if I may? Is trying to install Win10 from a USB drive on a ca 2007 machine (P5N-E, C2D, etc) an exercise in futility?

I've tried several different methods of making a bootable USB (Rufus in VirtalBox, Boot Camp Assistant, dd) but the only one that got close was BC Assistant- though it just displayed a "Booting USB created with Boot Camp Assistant..." and does nothing

3:09 PM
Hmmm why @varfirstName ?
does the bios support USB Boot?
if not, ya screwed
tho.... I'm not sure what happens on non-efi systems thinking about it

@djsmiley2k Yeah, it 'boots' from the BCA-created USB

@djsmiley2k my server bios supports it from 2003, pretty sure a 2007 desktop will be able to

@BenN Core2Due something something... will look up model number, 2 ticks- have documentation to hand

@bertieb why in VirtualBox?

@bertieb Whoops, I didn't realize what C2D was an acronym for :)

3:11 PM
@varfirstName Because nearly everybody I saw said "don't bother with $THAT_OTHER_METHOD, use Rufus"

@varfirstName being able to, and actually doing it are 2 different things ;D

@varfirstName Linux machine won't recognise USB drives for reasons I can't be bothered figuring out at the moment (different problem) and only other machine I have handy is a mac laptop

CA 2007 machine?

@bertieb sadly a great many people on the internet are simply wrong.

3:12 PM
@bertieb are you plugging them into the case or the mobo

This makes me tempted to try the win10 install on wifes laptop tonight
fresh install, how long is it gonna take? :/

Max 3 hrs tbh dj

not too bad then

@djsmiley2k Truedat, but the "universal SD/USB media creation" dealie (Etch), created to "remove the hassles and pitfalls of creating SD etc on different OS's" recommended using a dedicated tool

gotta swap the disk out too :/

3:13 PM
@varfirstName Mobo

hmmm, can you boot from CD? XD

@varfirstName Don't have a CD burner since ages

The dedicated tool, recommended using a different dedicated tool? :d
@bertieb get a usb one :d

Can you boot from Floppy? :P

@djsmiley2k Yup! I didn't write it... :P
@varfirstName Haven't had a floppy drive since longer
@varfirstName Also, if you have a Win10 install floppy...

3:14 PM
Can you boot from tape?

I've had success PXE booting a fairly old machine to install Windows 10
Requires a Windows Server laying around, though

@djsmiley2k I do have another machine with a DVD burner, but it's currently headless-ish (Kodi) and not sure where my blank DVD media is at this point

I have a PowerEdge 2950 that I use for the express purpose of preparing boot media and storing files

@BenN Don't have one of those :S Have a Linux PXE/TFTP server, but little Windows
@djsmiley2k As another person on the internet, what would you recommend for creating a bootable Win10 install USB? :P

3:16 PM
@bertieb why not use etcher?

@bertieb As someone who's not done it yet, I'd reccomend the windows 10 bootable win 10 install installer.

wait..
You're saying it won't recognize it
but does it detect it at all?

@varfirstName It did a Clippy impression and said "Hey! it looks like you're trying to create a Windows install USB, use a tool designed for doing that like Rufus, or Boot Camp Assistant"

oh rip
uh...

@varfirstName USB drive created by Boot Camp Assistant is detected by the BIOS
The other methods... not so much

3:18 PM
what format are you making the drive using Rufus?

I wonder if it's one of those weird bioses where the boot option is under some seemingly inexplicable place.

Err, NTFS/BIOS from memory

exFAT, FAT32, NTFS?

@djsmiley2k If you mean the machine I'm working on (as opposed to your wife's laptop), I have found the BIOS option for removable drives and it does detect one, but that one doesn't work
@varfirstName The latter (NTFS)

iirc you don't put install media on NTFS
but I could be super wrong
wouldn't be the first time
I'm guessing if it's not formatted with MBR your bios won't detect it as a boot drive

3:20 PM
@varfirstName I had it set to FAT32, but when I pointed Rufus at the actual ISO, it seemed to do NTFS. I could check that if necessary

windows 10 boot drives use ntfs

ok, I'm gravely wrong, proceed Bertie-boy

@bertieb can you try using mbr and gpt modes?

yea
if you use MBR it will most likely work

mbr won't work unless you have legacy compatibility enabled
though on a 2007 PC idk if you'd have BIOS or UEFI

3:21 PM
I'll shut up now

likely BIOS, so... go MBR

@varfirstName Currently using MBR partition map
@Avery BIOS

try GPT

try another flash drive

3:22 PM
or another USB slot

have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in ;)

driver support etc might be the problem, and I mean it

Have tried 2 different USB drives

And different slots

3:22 PM
is this a sandisk ultra?

Nope

what model is it

PNY somethingorother

because I use exclusively my company's flash drives for this

Duracell somethingorother

3:23 PM
which are kingston datatraveller 3.0s
Duracell makes flash drives?
TIL

they don't

Dear lord

do you have any normal flash drives?

@varfirstName At some point, I guess. Can't remember where I got either of these, but they worked prior to this endeavour

3:24 PM
it's very likely one of the OEM stuff

@varfirstName My thought's exacttly

like, "stuff from china with our name printed on it"

@bertieb they don't any more ;D

@varfirstName What do you class as normal?

3:25 PM
Kingston... SanDisk...

@bertieb just go outside and buy a sandisk, kingston etc etc

Lexar..
just buy an 8 gb lexar from staples or best buy

10 people like my post inciting americans (including americans themselves) to rise up, and take back their country.

@Avery You willing to bet the cost of whatever I buy fixes the problem? :P

Whoops. I accidently Civil War.

3:26 PM
I bet 0$
I'm trying to help.

@bertieb I have thrown hard drives because a USB drive has failed from lack of driver support

@bertieb I'm willing to bet, you could sell that laptop for less than the cost of a new SD card.

If you're going to treat me like I work for you, then you'll have to pay me by my hourly fee.

OH SHIT DAWG

It's 7 years old. it's anyone's guess
the ports could be full of chewing gum for all we know.

3:27 PM
@Avery It was a joke, I meant no offence; although it was a bit of a prickly joke as "just go spend money on this" rubbed me the wrong way (poor student etc). I take it back if that helps?

Are you trying to install the 64-bit version?

@BenN Yea

oh shit dawg ^

Maybe try 32-bit - perhaps the old CPU doesn't have all the instructions that modern 64-bit OSes expect?
Kinda speculating here, but possibly worth a try

I need to create an internet filter
that litterally returns everything as if it's year 'x'
so you can choose to surf in the 00's
and everything is flash and crap
and then, every time someone tells me 'things were better then', I'd revert them to that year

3:29 PM
please don't

and laugh

the past is digusting

@BenN Could try, but AFAICT Core2Dues were 64 bit

Windows, Y R U TREATING THE WRONG MONITOR AS PRIMARY

@bertieb what is your exact cpu
actually, let me put it this way

3:30 PM
@bertieb They are, but they should be able to run a 32-bit OS

how much RAM is currently in that system?

@varfirstName Will pull out the docs, 2 secs

I love how we've gone full-on tech support for this dude

(on a serious money side note; this is being done on a day off because a good friend of mine lost all their computer gear and can't afford to get anything to replace them; I had an old machine kicking around doing nothing so I thought I'd try and help them out)

Avoiding profanity usually helps the perceived tone

3:34 PM
Gotcha
@bertieb you got the specs yet, my dude?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Original docs say 2GB of RAM but also a different graphics card so will cehck on the actual machine

64 bit instruction set..

FWIW here is a set of pages that claims to be able to install Windows 7 via PXE from a Linux server

Looks like 2GB, aye

3:37 PM
hmm
maybe it can't load the installer into memory?

That CPU appears to have all the necessary instructions, so that's probably not the issue

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@varfirstName Not sure? Going to retry some of the previous methods I've used to make sure I've tried all combinations on both drives

Got any additional ram you can put in it temporarily

I've had issues with getting Windows install media recognised in the past, the few times I've worked with Windows in recent years
@varfirstName Good thought, but none spare

3:39 PM
got any you can transplant temporarily?

I might have missed some messages, but have you tried the official Media Creation Tool?

He doesn't have a copy of Windows at all

Oh right

Right, Bertie?

(Apologies if I seemed a little brusque to anyone (especially @Avery); I'm taking this chap to the shops shortly and hoped to have a status update for him- bit of a stressful time.)
@BenN That's a good thought, I could try that from a VirtualBox VM (running XP), right?

3:40 PM
possibly

I have some doubts about whether the MCT will work on XP, but it's worth a shot

I don't know how well virtual media interfaces with USB devices

VirtualBox can do pass-through

but on a bit level, i'm not sure, @BenN

On Windows at least, the thing is basically directly connected to the VM

3:42 PM
You need at least W7 to run the Media Creation Tool in a proper environment

I have an ancient scanner that won't work at all on Win10, but works fine passed through to a WinXP VM

XP is not officially supported
@BenN really? :o

Yep

Yea, MCT won't work on XP (just tried). Good thought tho. I have a 7 VM but it's on the Linux machine that won't detect USB drives and so I can't pass it through :-/

it won't detect USB drives at all?
Mount it over the network
:P

3:47 PM
@varfirstName They show up in lsusb, but not as block devices

Mount it over the network..

@bertieb Hmm, I think that's OK on a Windows host; does the device show up in the Devices menu in VirtualBox?

@varfirstName Can I do that in a way to be able to pass it through to VirtualBox

(not sure if there even is a Devices menu on Linux VirtualBox, but it's there on Windows)

@BenN That was my thought too, but unfortunately not

3:48 PM
Aw :(

@bertieb you should be able to mount them like a samba share on the windows machine

@varfirstName Sorry, not following. As in 'Shared folders' type thing in VirtualBox? Or passing access to the raw device over the network?

just pass the network through

From where to where?

it should be passed through automatically

3:51 PM
@varfirstName The USB drive? To the virtual machine?

ok
so plug it into the mac, right?

Right
(the mac only has the XP VM, FWIW)

then on the Linux machine, in Win XP, map the network drive

You'll be able to extract the ISO onto the drive that way, but then you'll need a way to write the boot information

^ Beat me to it
(Also, Etcher didn't make the USB visiable to the BIOS, just to keep track of things)

3:55 PM

do you have a linux VM on the mac?

@varfirstName Aye, a basic crunchbag VM

mount the physical drive to that via passthrough
god my solution is so ratchet

Sure

brb gotta clock out

4:00 PM
..? Now Boot Camp Assistant is complaining that it needs a "Windows 7 or later image" for the image that it happily used earlier.
Tech gremlins, I swear

You aren't making the image using boot camp assistant
*drive

@varfirstName This was for the drive I have't tried that with yet; I have the Linux VM running for your suggestion
Working in parallel :)

did you successfully mount the drive over windows?

I can pass the drive through to the Linux VM, what would you like me to do next?

net use K: \\<linux-vm-hostname>\<drive-letter-of-usb-drive-on-linux-vm>$
map it in windows
now get your 10Gbps NICs out
XD

4:05 PM
Err, will need to see if samba is installed in the Linux VM
And share the drive

well, yea..

(unless you mean something else by 'Linux drive letter')

I mean the drive letter seen by linux
smb is installed on all my linux machines by default

The mount point?

yea
default is usually c$
like windows uses C:
yea just make a share
it'll be a lot easier
initially format the drive using Disk Utility on Mac for an MBR layout

4:10 PM
(interestingly, Etcher seems to have written the image as UDF, same as dd; presumably that's why the old BIOS isn't seeing it?)

oh..
yea.

4:30 PM
> Hitler was a socialist who hated jews
O.o.O.OoOoO
> Augusto Pinochet's great deeds in this world caused him to transcended and evolve into an all powerful meme form
That sub is satire... right?

@ThatREDACTEDGuy nup. All serious
It's a subsidiary of the_donald

I can understand a crazy deeply uninformed and misguided person thinking the first quote is true.
But how can the wording of the second quote not be satire?
Unless the sub was created as satire and the extremists didn't realize and joined it.
> If I had a gun with 2 bullets and was stuck in a room with the inventor of Java, Hitler, and Bin Laden, I would shoot the inventor of Java. Twice.

4:47 PM
congrats to SpaceX on another flawless mission execution -- a Dragon capsule is headed to the ISS with supplies and equipment :)
everything went precisely as planned

yay

\o/

Nice!

to infinity, and beyond!

Okay guys someone help me out here

Some kid from school created an Instagram account.

@rahuldottech on?

And they've been posting all sorts of crap about other students there
And about school administration
And it goes beyond what is "free speech"
Like defamation

link?

Notify the school administration?

4:53 PM
And, uh, the school cabinet has asked me to "try and hack it"

Oh, don't do that
That's a bad idea

And I don't think you can do anything beyond reporting it to instragrram

@BenN they are the ones telling me to hack it
@BenN I know
I'm refusing
But teachers might get pissed if I do that

Inform them that you will not do anything illegal, and point them to the Instagram documentation on what use is allowed
I don't use Instagram, but I imagine they have provisions in place to deal with abuse

What's a "School cabinet"?
Is that students or teachers/administrators?

4:55 PM
Parliament orders @rahuldottech to do a strategic strike

## s/Par/Schoo/

@allquixotic Schooliament orders @rahuldottech to do a strategic strike (source)

@allquixotic student council. Perfects and heads

@rahuldottech Perfect? Head? Terminology parse error sorry
are there adults who are supportive of asking you to hack this?

@allquixotic uh, board of students elected to act as leaders and moderators
@allquixotic teachers apparently

4:57 PM
How directly did they ask you?

Prefect*

The teachers/faculty, that is; students don't really have the authority

@rahuldottech "Apparently"? If none of them have directly asked you to do anything then you can't really do much... A bunch of students asking you to hack something could be interpreted as them just "joking around" and so no punishment would happen

@BenN "Can you hack an Instagram account? We need to know who is behind it ASAP"

And is this the teachers?

4:58 PM
If an adult directly asks you to hack the site or is nodding along in agreement while witnessing a student ask you to hack it, you can go above their head to their manager and get them fired

@BenN head of board representing teachers and students

#Trump took this long to condemn white supremacists in #Charolettesville. It can't be clearer he has a #ConflictofInterest #ImpeachTrumpNow

I'll ask for clarification about teachers asking

Well, no matter who's asking, you shouldn't do it
