@varfirstName I stepped on a certain well-known manufacturer's magnetic, no-accidentally-pulling-your-laptop-to-the-ground cord at the weekend, and it dragged it into... the fortuitously-open drawer below it
I've tried several different methods of making a bootable USB (Rufus in VirtalBox, Boot Camp Assistant, dd) but the only one that got close was BC Assistant- though it just displayed a "Booting USB created with Boot Camp Assistant..." and does nothing
@varfirstName Linux machine won't recognise USB drives for reasons I can't be bothered figuring out at the moment (different problem) and only other machine I have handy is a mac laptop
@djsmiley2k Truedat, but the "universal SD/USB media creation" dealie (Etch), created to "remove the hassles and pitfalls of creating SD etc on different OS's" recommended using a dedicated tool
@varfirstName It did a Clippy impression and said "Hey! it looks like you're trying to create a Windows install USB, use a tool designed for doing that like Rufus, or Boot Camp Assistant"
@djsmiley2k If you mean the machine I'm working on (as opposed to your wife's laptop), I have found the BIOS option for removable drives and it does detect one, but that one doesn't work
@Avery It was a joke, I meant no offence; although it was a bit of a prickly joke as "just go spend money on this" rubbed me the wrong way (poor student etc). I take it back if that helps?
(on a serious money side note; this is being done on a day off because a good friend of mine lost all their computer gear and can't afford to get anything to replace them; I had an old machine kicking around doing nothing so I thought I'd try and help them out)
(Apologies if I seemed a little brusque to anyone (especially @Avery); I'm taking this chap to the shops shortly and hoped to have a status update for him- bit of a stressful time.)
@BenN That's a good thought, I could try that from a VirtualBox VM (running XP), right?
Yea, MCT won't work on XP (just tried). Good thought tho. I have a 7 VM but it's on the Linux machine that won't detect USB drives and so I can't pass it through :-/
@rahuldottech "Apparently"? If none of them have directly asked you to do anything then you can't really do much... A bunch of students asking you to hack something could be interpreted as them just "joking around" and so no punishment would happen
If an adult directly asks you to hack the site or is nodding along in agreement while witnessing a student ask you to hack it, you can go above their head to their manager and get them fired
