1:00 PM
Why?
@ThatREDACTEDGuy ... they do already :D

@djsmiley2k NO! OMG! Really?!

:O
if only she carried a device with a unique digital signature which they could also track
@Avery I REMEMBERED AND GOT IT RIGHT \o/

A Wisconsin company will let employees use microchip implants to buy snacks and open doors: theverge.com/2017/7/24/16019530/…
"let"
Roombas have been busy mapping our homes, and now that data could be up for sale: theverge.com/2017/7/24/16021610/…
Yay, even our brooms are tracking us and selling our data

@Avery cool, I guess
They're removable, right?

Body implants aren't usually removable

1:05 PM
Oh wait what

Bob
hm

anything is removable...

Bob
my mum wants to revive a 2005 laptop running xp for a (senior) friend
ugh
I will have no part in this.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy the old company i worked at basically offered this
the skype company

@ThatREDACTEDGuy The economy is crap and consumers aren't buying stuff, so companies are resorting to other ways to maintain a revenue stream and satisfy shareholders.

1:08 PM
@Rahul2001 yes, but surgically

the CTO had real visions, he wantexd the devs to come up with exciting new products such as this, and this was.... like 10 years ago
@Bob stick ssd in it.... but XP? they'll want to put it online too?
Ubuntu + xp skin?

Bob
@djsmiley2k 2005. it's not even worth an SSD

@Avery how surgical... if it's just me with a scapel and some alcohol then it's all good
@Bob No spare newer machine to 'donate' in it's place?

Is the hardware current enough to run a recent Linux distribution?

Bob
not even sure it does sata lol
@bwDraco not. worth. the. trouble.
I'm not touching that thing with a ten-foot pole

1:10 PM
@djsmiley2k i consider that surgical

we've just had a brazilian apply for that frontend dev job

Bob
it's a dual-core netburst of all things
probably gets like 5 mins on battery

@bwDraco I agree, although I don't think it's because the economy is stagnant, but because of the very nature of the capitalist economy itself.

> I'm relocating to London and I am interested in applying for the position

@Burgi it's based in japan?

1:13 PM
@Burgi still taking applications?

@Rahul2001 no

@Burgi oh, lul
yeah people don't realise london =! uk

he is also too expensive
he's asking for £40k

@Burgi A Brazilian? OMG! Quick! RUN!
When he comes near, do this:

> I’m a Italo-Brazilian citizen. I’m moving in the end of this year to London
his grammar is very.... brazilian italian

1:20 PM
What's wrong in this phrase?

should be "at", not "in"

@ThatREDACTEDGuy Have you never heard of surgery?

@Avery Doesn't it need surgery to implant in the first place?

GAH!!!!! I HATE THIS WEBSITE

1:25 PM
@DavidPostill With enough firepower, anything is removable.

@djsmiley2k Until you get "Necrotizing fasciitis"

@DavidPostill sounds like a zombie movie starring fax machines ;D
return of the night of the copier!

@Burgi Is it in Drupal? Is it form the government? Is it from a behemoth organization with no sort of sane navigation or information hierarchy? Is it envisioned by a bureaucratic administration who then tasks the devs with "build this thing this way and don't ask questions"?
What, angry at my job? Who? Me?

@Burgi I thought you already had a new useless minion?

@ThatREDACTEDGuy no, no, yes, yes
@DavidPostill he's hired at the same rate as me so technically isn't a minion
also doesn't stop idiots emailing me

1:27 PM
Our teams minion trainee will be hired. As our boss.
Good thing I always treated him well.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy lol

Hahaha that's excellent, who's he got info on then? :D

reading up
@Bob anything pre core 2 isn't worth the time ever

@djsmiley2k Look it up and you wont be so amused.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I know -_-

1:31 PM
@djsmiley2k He's got great technical skills (well, that's not so hard comparing to our team) and amazing interpersonal skills.

@DavidPostill not exactly
there are some that work with just injections

And to be honest, he's one of the very, very, very, very few here since I've been hired that seems to even care about best practices, keeping up to date, having sites oriented to the user experience, delivering what is needed, sane development cycles, etc etc
And last week he was actually able to convince some of these points to management in a meeting
That's unheard of

An actual useful manager?

And he's not even been hired yet

lol

1:34 PM
He's graduating as a designer, works as front end, was hired in a journalism team, to work as a dev manager. Yes, we're complicated a mad house.

Some how, I manage to communicate stuff to management too
tho I dispise most of them
So multifacited then

No, we're actually crazy

I've worked in retail, in software (dev ops), in software (support desk), in software (monitoring for a large water company).

we could do with some stronger management
everyone here is scared of saying "no" to our customers
so we end up producing shit work

@Burgi same here unfortunately

1:36 PM
All our customers are internal and / or our organization itself. Everyone is scared of saying no because of politics.

we've had one big customer kick off, because basically the dev team are useless in this case (maybe because someone promised something that'd never be delivered)

"Hey we need a new site in three days. Go build it. Make it accessible." (actual quote)

the knock on effect is two 'new' customers to hte company have been shunted directly onto the main service desk, and we have basically no infomation to go on
meaning they call up, we log the call, it gets ignored because no one knows what to do, and the team that do are all busy with said noisy customer...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I found this fun little thing though ebay.com.au/itm/…

actually that dosen't seem half bad

1:44 PM
Anyone wanna go work for Amazon?

@djsmiley2k I applied and interviewed at AWS ;p

I applied and was interviewed for Cisco.
@JourneymanGeek amusingly I've just realised that could sound like I'm recruiting for the amazon warehouse they building outside my house, but it's not

ah
(oh, so yeah)

;D
yeah
skype interview
was... wierd, but ok
never went to next stage, even tho recruiter gave me lots of positive signs, I think the jobs just dried up
I kind of hope someone, somewhere, still has me on file
(that's how I got my current role after all)
They basically offered double my current wage, working from home with bi-yearly trips to the US

1:53 PM
Good morning and happy birthday @JourneymanGeek!

my cousin worked for the european logistics division at amazon

thanks

amazon employs a ton of people on logistics division
and warehouses etc

i think he was head of european logistics
he said it was stifling and he hated it
he's worked for some huge companies

hmm
When exactly are you pressing <f8>? (You have to press it while your computer is starting up ...) — DavidPostill ♦ 35 secs ago

1:56 PM
@djsmiley2k You worked at Skype? Cool!

lol no

@DavidPostill My strategy is to mash F8 over and over as soon as I power on the machine

The cisco interview was over skype

@ThatREDACTEDGuy lol

@BenN F2, F8, F12, ESC, Del, F1,
Pick a key, any key...

1:57 PM
Oooooh x_x'
@djsmiley2k There's F11 as well. And a few others.

does anyone else think that thor: ragnarok visually looks very like GotG2?

ctrl+p to configure the raid functionality
:D

@Burgi Not really:

tbh I just bang all the keys.
Or roll on it.
2

is almost nsfw.
plz.
ffs
that image link
plz.

2:02 PM
...?

not sure how that's NSFW

maybe we just got dodgy adverts here :/
but 'this game is so hot you must be mature to play it!'
and half naked female...

@djsmiley2k The kid-oriented MMORPG is NSFW?

no, the adverts surrounding it was.

2:04 PM
Ragnarok Online (spelled Ragnarök in the logo; Korean: 라그나로크 온라인, alternatively subtitled The Final Destiny of the Gods), often referred to as RO, is a Korean massive multiplayer online role-playing game or MMORPG created by GRAVITY Co., Ltd. based on the manhwa Ragnarok by Lee Myung-jin. It was first released in South Korea on 31 August 2002 for Microsoft Windows and has since been released in many other locales around the world. The game has spawned an animated series, Ragnarok the Animation, and a sequel game, Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second. Player characters exist in a world with a...

I know what the game is, I even played it a little bit.

Hang on, do you see NSFW things in that oneboxed image?

not IN it no
when I clicked, it took me to a page

Oh OK

I'm not even sure how the image is a hot link tbh
I didn't think you could do that.

2:05 PM
It's not, there's probably some weird referrer business going on

I thought it only ever opened the image directly in the browser, hense me clicking...
oh yeah, weird!

Your ISP is being evil.

Ok, sorry for moaning @ThatREDACTEDGuy I don't think this was your fault now
nah
that hosting site is...
@ThatREDACTEDGuy you click it.

haha ty @JourneymanGeek

2:06 PM
also adblock ;p

uBlock Origin FTW

@djsmiley2k I clicked it on google images, and I clicked it oneboxed, nothing suspicious here.

I used to use ABP, then tried uBlock and stayed

I do ublock too

I'm at work
can't install all the things.
@BenN Agree

2:07 PM
You should be able to install Chrome extensions though
(unless you don't have Chrome)

pihole pfBlockerNG + uBlock Origin = <3

but see above, I could likely install it, but the moment it interfers with a site loading and I blame a customer....

Ah

ah yup

Not that customers host anything dodgy, but I have to remember for every customer, to unblock everything they use

2:08 PM
I actually keep a second/clean browser for testing our school webpage

Nod
I considered that but it's a hassle here, considering the variety of things I have to check

(also, I tend to have 3 or more browsers installed...)

Here I have Edge, IE11, Firefox and Chrome
due to said issues with customers...

@BenN ESC for home PC, F12 for newer school PCs, DEL for older ones, F8 for the oldest, F2 for laptop, F10 for old laptop to open boot menu

At least in Windows 8 and newer the OS will handle the entrance to system settings for you

2:18 PM
Sorry, was AFK due to an urgent housework order.
I'm not exactly available right now - just checking real quick.

When I get a job, I'm installing whatever the hell I want on my PC and everyone else can go die in a fire

lol
dosen't always work that way
tbh, I just carry my own system, and work's fine with it mostly

@JourneymanGeek Windows To Go!

Been using it everywhere in school

2:23 PM
I'd prefer to carry my own gear whenever possible. I didn't buy a cheap laptop for no reason.

It is also a significantly better system

See you in a bit.

not all work places would be happy with that too

wtf
this documentation is so dumb
'copy the files to the server'... ok fine
i know scp, I can do this
now.... how do I get said files onto my own desktop... vnc won't let me do file transfers... urgh
I love it when people who don't even do a process, write the process...

2:46 PM
ah haaaaaaaa
i can use putty's ftp ;D
as the offical tool we have, doesn't work \o/

\o/

wow
slow copy is slow

3:50 PM

4:03 PM
@XKCD heh! finally a good one

I wanted to say that Flash is being killed off, but it appears that I'm late :/ Like way late:

Adobe to discontinue Flash Player by the end of 2020: https://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2017/07/adobe-flash-update.html

@djsmiley2k At least there's some sort of documentation. When it's people who do a process, they usually write nothing.

@ThatREDACTEDGuy No.
Is your Flash up to date?

Odd. Less sarcastically, are your browsers up to date? Never mind, I see that you posted a "Internal Server Error "

I'm using Firefox 0.1 alpha, why? Does it matter? ;P

4:22 PM
:)

Man
USB 3 has got to be one of the worst port designs EVER

@Rahul2001 It's not reversible, sure, but I appreciate that it has the option of more pins, while the female ports are still backwards compatible with regular micro-USB cables, if you need that.

The high-speed extra pins at the back of the male port keep getting bent
@Shokhet THIS ^
I need to save up for weeks to be able to afford the drives

@Rahul2001 Oh. I've never seen that.

And then whenever I plug them into one of the old USB 2 ports, they get bent

4:27 PM
this is a fracking crazy issue we are having:
1
A: Why strange characters appear on the website but not on html editor?

XY6SOLVED: The strange characters appear because they are part of the html document. They were not being displayed because the text editor was using UTF-8 encoding. The character "Â" is called a-circumflex and it is displayed as an empty space " " when using UTF-8 encoding, which is the default e...

@Shokhet Third drive got spoilt that way today

Apr 26 at 18:41, by Ben N
As usual, encoding ruins everything

@Rahul2001 I haven't actually seen that. I can't remember every trying to use a 2.0 cable in a 3.0 port, but my mom did that all the time with her Galaxy S 5 with no issue.

@Shokhet nope, I don't think you're getting me

@Rahul2001 I don't think I am. I'm thinking about these. Are we talking about the same thing?

4:30 PM
@Shokhet I'm talking about the non-micro end

@Rahul2001 Ah.

Plug them into an old USB 2 port, and half the time the high-speed pins at the back will get bent
And they're such thin copper that you cannot even straighten them out

I assumed you were talking about the micro end, because that's the part that I think of when I hear "USB 3.0," especially when talking about port design.
@Rahul2001 Never seen that happen either.

Jun 9 at 8:42, by Rahul2001
Hm, I'm fixing a USB drive with my sister's hairclip. My life...
I had limited success with fixing a cable before ^
But I cannot fix these small drives

Although whenever I have a 3.0 device, I'll plug it in to the SS ports on my machine so I can use the speed. (At this point, the only non-SS port on my laptop doesn't work at all.)

4:33 PM
@Shokhet School machines do not have SS ports
Hell, I'm pretty sure a couple still have USB 1 at the back

@Rahul2001 Ah. Time to upgrade them, then :)
@Rahul2001 Really time, then :D

@Shokhet lol yeah well
School PCs are very good as compared to other schools in the country

@Rahul2001 I think the ones in my school are running Vista. Maybe 7?

@Shokhet Ours run 10

I usually use my own computer, unless I need to print something in the library.

4:43 PM
@Shokhet We are not allowed to bring electronic gadgets to school
Including phones and laptops

@Rahul2001 Ah. I remember those days. I think the last time I had to use a school computer was in 10th grade.

@Shokhet I'm in 11th now :P

Although I think that'll change next semester, when I take the required "computers for dummies" class. Apparently they teach you how to use email...
@Rahul2001 Oh, okay. I always assume that random people on the internet are my age unless proven otherwise :p

@Shokhet lol

"And this is a mouse." I mean really :/

4:46 PM
This is cool
And cheap
4.66 USD
Totally worth it
Although I don't have any NFC devices :P
I think I'm going to use it automatically unlock my arduino-powered cupboard
@Shokhet ow

@Rahul2001 Yep.

Amazon launching in Singapore... Interesting

And then we'll work our way up to Microsoft Word and Excel. Yay! /s

@Shokhet haha
Attendance is compulsory?
@NotDog Hi. Haven't seen you around recently.

@Rahul2001 I've been... Occupied

4:49 PM
@Rahul2001 Looks cool. I wonder how hard it is to rewrite it to mimic a filled public transit card, in those cities that use RFID/NFC cards.

Also crashed my bike and stuff but that's relatively minor
Was only doing 50mph

@NotDog Ow. You okay?

@Rahul2001 obviously, or I wouldn't be here.

@Rahul2001 I need to take the class to graduate, if that's what you mean. I'm not sure if I'll have to actually sit in the classroom while the teacher drones on, though. I'll find out.

@NotDog uhm. ok.

4:50 PM
Looking forward to lots of Microsoft Solitaire (and possibly Stack Exchange :p)

@Rahul2001 I'd be like, I gotz brain damage I cannae mind me passwort

@Shokhet It'd be really cool if the teacher's just like "Yeah kiddos, I know that you probably know more than me, just sit and chill, and I'll do the same" :D

@Rahul2001 One can always hope :)

@NotDog O.o
@Shokhet Well, best of luck

Although apparently some students actually need that level of training to use computers, so the teacher will probably have to do something
@Rahul2001 Thanks :)

4:52 PM
@Shokhet Hm.
@Shokhet Interestingly, they've shifted to the Libre Suite here from MS Office
Which is honestly kinda cool

@Rahul2001 That is interesting. Probably cheaper for the school, if i had to guess
Although in the US, Microsoft gives students the entire Office suite for free if they have a valid student email (which I do).

@Shokhet Oh, that's neat
@Shokhet Nah, it appears to be an initiative across the school system
@Shokhet Hm... I wonder
Our school doesn't give student IDs, but I manage the computer club's domain
I wonder if my email on that will work?
> From your email address, it looks like your school isn't on our list of eligible institutions yet. You can help get it on the list by providing the following information.
We'll notify you about your school's eligibility and you can finish signing up.
OKAY WAIT OMG
My old school's email still works!
Almost three years later!

5:28 PM
@Rahul2001 set up forwarding to a real account
i do this with my uni account
10 years later, still works
hah, it still amazes me, no matter how many times the pirate bay is banned....
a single google, and boom, it's there ;D

Can someone handle this question? https://superuser.com/questions/1194277/how-to-setup-thunderbird-and-firefox-to-always-use-openvpn/1196779#1196779
I don't know if programs will use the VPN connection in all circumstances. I'm also surprised if the question hasn't been asked before.

@user598527 What are you expecting us to do?
@user598527 If you are not sure you should say so in your answer, or preferably delete the answer and write a comment instead.

@DavidPostill Yes, I'm considering deleting.
@DavidPostill I hope that someone with more experience answers as I don't completely understand the subject. I will now delete my answer and leave the question behind.

5:48 PM
@Rahul2001 That's cool! I heard that my school never cancels old student email addresses, but I wouldn't rely on that. I still give people my personal one, and really only use the school one for when teachers send out mass emails.

@user598527 programs don't choose, programs use whatever routing table the OS provides
this is answered without looking at hte question btw
oh its right anyway ;D

@djsmiley2k in theory a program with direct access to the NIC device's interface (OS-dependent, but rwx access to the network character device on Linux or NDIS API access on Windows) could bypass the OS's routing table
the routing table is handled by the kernel on most systems, but Linux provides provision for multiple routing tables to be defined and selected
it's a low level syscall and per-process, I think

6:08 PM
nod
eitherway, the comment 'everything will route over openvpn' is wrong
nopd

6:45 PM
@djsmiley2k Thank you for the help with the question. I have to be more careful!

Should I delete my comment or leave it there? I think that spreading false information is always dangerous and I get really angry when someone else does so :(
All programs will use your VPN connection if OpenVPN is connected. — user598527 Apr 7 at 15:44
