So... an update on the Bifrons SSD write offloading experiment. With the profile stored on a portable SSD and using CrystalDiskInfo's logging function, I've determined that on this system, Firefox does about 2-4 GB of writes in a typical day of web browsing. Most of this consists of random writes of varying block sizes.

(Firefox is configured to write out the recovery data every 30 seconds - the default is every 15 seconds)

Well, I have the External Graphics Development Kit -- a literal kit of 3 products -- installed and working 100% on my 13" 2016 MBP running macOS 10.13 Beta 3. Any questions or curiosities while I have it running?

It's a Sapphire Radeon RX 580, a Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 350, and a Belkin 4-port USB-C to USB-A hub for peripherals. Until they update their drivers, to get 3D rendering outside of OpenCL/Metal apps, you have to plug an external monitor into the RX 580 directly; the laptop's display renders on the Intel iGPU, as do any monitors directly plugged into the laptop's TB3 ports.

I believe you can do OpenCL and Metal 2 to the Radeon without an external display, but you can't game on it that way.

So, stability-wise, MacOS 10.13 Beta 3 seems to have smoothed over like 90% of the bugs that people were hitting with Beta 1 and 2 from what I've read, and based on my own testing. It's not flawless, but I'm not hitting any showstoppers :)

Really impressive considering they literally rewrote their graphics stack between Sierra and High Sierra

Biggest changes to MacOS graphics rendering since the introduction of Quartz hardware acceleration way back in I-don't-know, probably a year matching 200[1-9]

@Avery There's a public beta, but see if you can get in for free and download it from developer.apple.com -- if you can't find it for free under downloads, you'd have to get it from a $99/yr dev account :(

The public beta appears to be 5 to 7 days lagging behind the developer-only beta (the same code gets promoted to public when it's determined from internal developer-only testing that it isn't total trash, I guess)

So 10.3 Beta 3 is out to devs only right now; it released yesterday to devs

I would not recommend using the current public beta, as it's pretty much trash

@Avery Not at all likely if you use your VM's snapshotting feature to take a snapshot pre-upgrade; if it breaks, just roll back :P But on a serious note, it depends on how much hacking you had to do (or how much hacking your MacOS "distribution" or wrapper/install script did) to make it work in a VM in the first place

if you're running a truly vanilla binary of MacOS in a VM (better yet -- on a Mac!) the likelihood of a problem-free upgrade is excellent

if you have hacked kexts, I'd honestly expect breakage

as in, "system won't boot" or "no GPU acceleration" level breakage - complete and total breakage - with hacked kexts

Yeah; other than some disk space usage, a snapshot is a guaranteed way to be able to go back if it breaks your system

Irony?: You're doing a VM Hackintosh and your Beta update is going to be safer than my physical hardware Beta update on a Macbook Pro, because I don't have the ability to take a full disk snapshot (I would if I had an external drive I could Time Machine onto, but I don't have a reliable enough old drive that I trust to the job, so it isn't worth the time to do it)

I took a risk and it was fine, but I could've seriously bricked or nearly bricked my expensive MBP

I got this phone like a month ago and I just added my email address and the pgp key that server automatically encrypts everything with yesterday
