I mean, she's hard work, but a lovely person too
No, no it's not :X
@Burgi it wasn't as a dark as that haha
it was meant as a compliement

i figured

but man, if only I'd known her for a bit first, it'd at least have been fun xD
And now she can't find a guy who actually treats her right:/
or if she does, she ends up freaking over it ://

I guess people still use them probably

1:09 AM
There's newer models. Also some people like physical keyboards
Who is Tim?

1:33 AM
@William 2016?
errr
It was more like 2006.
I had my s4 for... 2 years maybe, my s3 for 3 years before that
yeah deffo more like 2006

There's a chat fight, watch out!!

Bob
Hm.
HDD time to install: >3h
SSD time to install: <30m
clearly installing via WDS from/in VMs on the same host is a pathological case for HDDs :P

@Bob hm. looks like buyvm has a 1gb ram / 20gb ssd plan for the same amount I was paying for my 256mb ram plan
hm, scaleway actually seems nicer

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, scaleway's good for RAM/$, but I wouldn't run anything that needs persistent storage on it

@Bob how long does scaleway take to create accounts/provision?
@Bob hmm, why?

Bob
5:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek provision a VM in about 3 mins
@JourneymanGeek personal experience. "hypervisor failure" lead to losing all data since the last time the VM was stopped.

I basically got someone who wants me to walk him through a server/moodle install for his own use.
basically my old stack (lighttpd/php/mysql) would work, but I only have a few hours sooo...

Bob
basically the running instance of a VM takes "cloud" to a whole new level and the data is about as reliable as a literal cloud, too :P

erf
I seem to recall buyvm took a while to provision

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tbf it ran fine for a month before, and some people apparently have been fine for half a year or longer, but I don't find it that trustworthy atm

Bob
5:09 AM
a software crash can lead to data loss... ugh.
but, yea, backups :P
@JourneymanGeek you can go from nothing to a scaleway vm in about 15 mins, I think
though they do reject some credit cards, so... depends what country and card :P
great for testing
@JourneymanGeek how long-term is this?
or is this supposed to be an example they can later migrate?

yea
@Bob going to walk someone through, potentially long term

Bob
ah...

If I run it on buyvm, I'd do the outsourced DB option, which is a little safer

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tbh you aren't gonna get great reliability for that kind of proce range, but scaleway might be one of the ... less reliable. if only because of the additional point of failure. though maybe the vast majority never have issues and I've just spent too long reading complaints on their forums :P
@JourneymanGeek online.net/en/ods but pricey :P

yeah, I'm looking at something around my pre-dedi priceranges ._.

Bob
5:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek buyvm is ... bleh. openvz.
I wonder if they're using the updated kernels

not any more
they kinda moved everything but their lowest end plan to KVM

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "¼ Core"
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww

should be better than my old openvz server ;p
.... ooh, actually, these do windows server. Might be fun to see how horrible or useful it is

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...from personal experience on Azure A0? it'll be ... painful
@JourneymanGeek RAM, yea. CPU, naw. cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=1240&cmp[]=1979
I'm just guessing at their hardware here, but that's probably reasonable
1/4 of that is like Avoton levels?
single Avoton core. bleh.
but idk what moodle needs

eh, its your standard php webapp.
ugh, buyvm won't take free email providers either.
yeah, scaleway it is

Bob
5:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek I totally forgot about that :P

they used to!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek not when I signed up, oh, in 2013?
@JourneymanGeek make sure you get a server in PAR, not in AMS - they have network capacity issues in AMS right now
keep in mind that the prices are a lie
you won't get the quoted per-month price unless you run it nonstop for a whole month - if you stop and start again you reset the timer and have to pay hourly for the rest
(and running it nonstop forever is cheapest, but also means you lose the most if a hypervisor goes down... backups!)
x86 VC1S (Avoton) is what I use. it's alright.
ARM64-2GB has double the cores and reasonable per-core perf, but it's ARM... should be fine for php
C1 (old ARM) is terribad and should not be used

Going to go avaton

5:57 AM
hello

@ThatREDACTEDGuy you get promoted to person with free time :p
hello world
@rahuldottech you should have a muppet with a hoodie instead.

6:24 AM
@ThatREDACTEDGuy no, I'd force them to use irc with pgp!

ugh, I'm so not used to this place being quiet that I get minorly anxious when it is.

7:10 AM
ugh, my minor mysql usage is so rusty

Bob
7:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek s/mysql/postgresql/ :D

@JourneymanGeek select * from memories where topic like '%my%sql%'

oh, this is wordpress
Most of my other stuff runs on pgsql
I still have to do the domain change and other bits of plumbing
and having the occational debate about a better platform
@satibel I've been doing in staging folder documentation for each move
.... "Clearly you standing there fixed it. Could you hang around until this is done please?"
TIFM :(
(printer was acting up. NO PRIZES FOR GUESSING HOW I FIXED IT)
@Bob postgres tbh, typically tends to be easier for me
and my ttrss install is fully documented. Cause yanno, I DOCUMENT THESE THINGS ON THE BLOG I JUST MOVED ;p
tbh, I am half tempted to just rsync over the files again, cause permissions
cause I cannot for the life of me remember if I need to do anything special here

Bob
7:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek blog or ttrss?

blog
TTRSS will be a fresh install

Bob
ah

my instance is VERY lightly customised and there's a few old messups I need to fix anyway
I have like one plugin (which fixes a common feed error) and a single, documented UI tweak (for colour images in night mode)
0_0 Office suddenly got loud. Then quiet.

morning

8:15 AM
weird thing: we have a pc which sometimes has the keys alt, ctrl or shift that get stuck on but not pressed on the keybord.

@satibel That happens. One of those keys gets stuck in the wrong state. The solution is to press those keys a few times each (individually) and it will unstick.

@DavidPostill I know, though I'd like to know why.

Bob
@satibel some program/hotkey intercepted the keyup

@satibel I think it's a bug deep inside Windows where it thinks "Sticky Keys" is turned on but it isn't.

new minion hasn't shown up

8:23 AM
@Burgi 2nd day at work?

Bob
@DavidPostill uh, no.
@JourneymanGeek Battlelore 🎶 (bit growly though)

@Bob might be rdp or the barcode scanner.

@Bob Why not? It is possible to turn sticky keys on without knowing about it if you have the right options set.

Bob
@satibel more likely the barcode scanner, though rdp is a candidate. is the issue on the local or remote side?
@DavidPostill it being possible to turn it on does not mean it's a bug, and if it's on it's rather obvious.
besides, stickykeys is very high level - iirc it runs as any other user mode process
If it's on you'd know it's on

@Bob I am ok with slightly growly music

8:29 AM
@Bob Exactly. But the symptom is the same. The key "appears stuck"

Bob
occam's razor - something intercepting keyup is far more likely than "a bug deep in Windows that acts like sticky keys"

You press A and some menu item appears if <alt> is stuck.

Bob
@DavidPostill I get annoyed when people jump to OS bugs when there's far more likely explanations.
@JourneymanGeek Draconian 🎶 (also growly)
@JourneymanGeek Cryoshell 🎶 (reminds me of Evanescence)

@Bob Well I don't use RDP or a barcode scanner. It happens to me so rarely it appears to be a Windows bug. Because it's so rare I've never tried to track it down.

@Bob heh, Evanescence comes under vaguely guilty pleasures ;p
they arn't that good, but some of their stuff is very listenable ;p
also, cryoshell is a cool name sooooo do have to give them a listen when I am free

Bob
8:36 AM
@DavidPostill there's any number of potential app-related causes. it happens often in games due to how they process inputs. anywhere a message can be missed.
@JourneymanGeek My Immortal was a favourite for a while :P

lol
THAT SONG

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Creeping In My Soul is the specific track I heard

I actually like it. Just that I totally used to listen to it all the time when I was emo as heck.

Bob
also. totally different, but... Kiitos by Pete Parkkonen (male vocals, not English)

lol
I'll have to add these to zee lizt when I get home
20 min left

8:43 AM
@DavidPostill yeah, train was hugely delayed
wouldn't be the first time we've scared someone off though

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Beautiful Sin 🎶 (not symphonic? :P) - Take Me Home is the track

@Burgi did he turn up on the first day at least?

Bob
hmm. I can't search on emoji :(

aww
meta bug report? ;p

8:47 AM
@Bob local. rdp is capturing the keyboard, so it might be it.

@JourneymanGeek true

Q: Searching for emoji in chat is 💩 (broken)

BobRecently, I've been recommending music in chat, 'tagging' it with emoji (🎶). But they don't come up in search! https://chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=%F0%9F%8E%B6&room=118 Yea, this is probably waaaaaaaay down the priority list. But it's a nice-to-have.

9:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek you have 10k on MSE, right? any chance you can share what the second comment on the now-deleted answer ^ says?

@JourneymanGeek ah. thanks

Q: When was Calibri font made available for use?

zhkThe background of this question is Pakistan Supreme Court investigation into Panama leaks. The current prime minister of Pakistan and his family are probed for money laundering. Among other allegations, THE Joint Investigation Team alleged that the PM's daughter forged the documents using "Cali...

Is this really off-topic? I was in the middle of answering it :/

@DavidPostill initially i thought it was legitimate but now @Mokubai's argument is swaying me a little... time for meta?

@DavidPostill i feel it is

9:54 AM
There are public source s indicating it was available before 2007. A public review of the new fonts (including Calibri), A Comprehensive Look at the New Microsoft (Vista) Fonts, was posted on June 5, 2006.

> there is no actual problem to be solved
Well, in the scope of the site at least

Don't we have a lot of "What's the point of...", "Why is X like...", ... questions?
I feel like I answered some in the past

I tend to close a lot of those ;p

as long as they don't call @DavidPostill to the witness stand i can't see a problem...

I've reopened it, but I still don't like the question.

10:07 AM
mod fight!

Mod don't fight, we make reasoned discussions and come to an amicable solution.
If that fails we fall back to sock-and-half-brick at dawn.

lol I don't like the question much either but meh ;p

@Mokubai i have visions of something like sumo wrestling but with brass knuckles

@Burgi or a slapfight

A rolled up newspaper fight :)

10:19 AM
a small dog biting your unmentionables always wins....

@Mokubai Thanks :)
@Burgi Small dogs can only reach ankle height :)

@DavidPostill bite the ankle, they fall over, unmentionables are now at dog height...
also small dogs have acceleration on their side

small dogs usually can jump

awww!!! donald trump doesn't want to come to the UK because he thinks everyone hates him!
tbf he should come now while everyone hates theresa may more than him

10:53 AM
@Burgi I have no idea what could have given him that impression cough this cough

@DavidPostill can you please take a look and give your thoughts on this? I'm interested in what mod thought of this.

Q: Should we look up existing answers when reviewing?

VylixToday I got an audit (which I passed because I tried to edit it - it throws a "has been deleted" error) of a seemingly good answer (I lost the link). The answer is good, however it has been removed because basically similar answer of an existing answer. The review UI does not show existing answe...

@Mokubai only 1mill signatures?

As if there were no idiots in the UK. What would it change denying one more idiot a simple visit? At least he's going to leave after, not like all the stupidity you have in the country to begin with
The first to go would be everyone who was stupid enough to sign that petition

@OliverSalzburg he is coming here to claim benefits! #brexit

Oh noes! I bet he will rape the children and kill the women afterwards!

11:07 AM
The UK should leave the USA!

Oh he'll build a wall between the US and the UK!
And the EU will pay for it!!!

nah get the mexicans to pay for it, the EU is still paying for greece

They should build a moat...

@JourneymanGeek Genius!

look if germans can riot about trump at the G20, imagine the chaos if he does a state visit here

11:10 AM
People didn't riot because of Trump

oh... what did they riot for then?
the BBC seemed to suggest it was because of trump

Because they are young and angry. Kids being kids
Ask a 16 year old why they did anything. The reason is going to be stupid
And you can bet it won't be some political shit
Present 16 year olds excluded obviously!

@OliverSalzburg those guys are the worst!

In general, the protests and, by extension the riots, were due to concerns regarding globalization

they should just grow up

11:14 AM
People are angry because the world is not like they want it to be. And if you're big enough of an asshole, you'll burn down something that doesn't belong to you because of it
Seems weird, but that's what people do
Like children tearing down the sandcastle because they can't have the green shovel

> Violence was predictable after the leftist militants [...]

News and social networks are really annoying right now. Everyone is so convinced that they are right and only they know what really happened and why
The left is screaming how everyone deserved things, because the cops are dicks and the whole world is dominated by the 1% (us)

So, it's "fake music" now?
I mean, that's like calling Netflix own productions "fake movies"
How is it not perfectly legit for Spotify to put their own productions on their platform?
And while we're at it, why can't MS bundle IE with Windows 98?! :D

11:45 AM
@OliverSalzburg because someone else could develop a competing implementation of kernel32.dll and ship it as Kernscape 32igator

@Vylix It's entirely up to you. 1/ Reviewing is not obligatory 2/ If you want to go the extra mile and check out the other answers then please do so. 3/ If in doubt (you think it might be an audit) then it is a good idea to do so.

12:15 PM
a Canadian Hard sounds like a whiskey

@Burgi a Canadian Hard sounds like a bear

THE STEAMLINK! IT HAS ARRIVED!!!!

@Burgi What does it do?

it links steam!
it is meant to allow you to easily stream games over the network from your PC to the TV

I see
Test it! :D

12:26 PM
i can't in work

i should have probably got a 2nd controller but "meh"

I received new plants in the mail today. Can't wait to "try" those either :D
2

@OliverSalzburg yum?
yum?

Er, no idea what that means. But where I ordered these plants, you get pictures that are like "This is the plant in 10 years". When you receive the parcel, they are tiny and wrapped in brown paper. So I haven't actually seen what they look like

12:34 PM
i can't see you as a gardener

I'm actually a crazy plant person

@Burgi so it's a chromecast-style thing that speaks the Steam Home Streaming protocol?

@ToxicFrog yup
it was only £11 during the sale

That sounds like a sweet deal. What's the normal price?

12:38 PM
why would I pay 40 American pounds for steamln when I can write the command myself? :P

because you need the hardware?

1:01 PM
@allquixotic the target market is people who don't already have a computer hooked up to the TV, I suspect.

Steam Link looks good. But I already have 2 such devices on my TV and it's getting ridiculous
10 years ago, I was switching channels. Today I switch inputs

@OliverSalzburg How many such inputs do modern (smart) TVs have? Last time I bought a TV it was a couple of SCART inputs and a set of Audio/Video sockets :)

@DavidPostill Good question. I think I have 3 HDMI inputs and my TV is about 10 years old I guess
Probably less. It just feels old because it doesn't have over 9000 K resolution

my smart TV isn't
none of the apps work anymore
and it freaks out if you plug in a HDD greater than 500GB

@DavidPostill mine is a relatively recent non-smart TV and it has three HDMI, one S-Video, one component, one VGA, and two RCA inputs, IIRC
Although I don't think all of them can be used simultaneously (e.g. the S-Video shares an input with one of the RCA inputs)

1:08 PM
@ToxicFrog what does an IIRC port look like? ;)

@Burgi He obviously meant to say IRC port :)

@DavidPostill is that 194 or 6667?

haha
irc port ;]
morning
@Bob: really dont remember or care, I havent been active here in a very long time. =\

Bob
@NotAdminDave ...I'm confused.

"the list" joke is funny though.
Anytime anyone posts something related to personal information, illegal activities, etc, someone usually says something like welcome you're now on 'the list' or something.
facepalm

1:15 PM
lol. The "Calibri" question has made HNQ :)

Whats the "Calibri" question?

Jun 27 '16 at 6:34, by Journeyman Geek
everyone's on a list.

the people who aren't on the list are on a list

1:22 PM
@NotAdminDave The one I got upset about because @Mokubai closed it while I was in the middle of writing an answer :)

Darn totally missed that Q

Q: When was Calibri font made available for use?

zhkThe background of this question is that the Pakistan Supreme Court is investigating the Panama leaks. The current prime minister of Pakistan and his family are being probed for alleged money laundering. Among other allegations, the Joint Investigation Team alleged that the PM's daughter forged ...

Ah nice nice

the question is still quite opinionated
i fully expect @DavidPostill to be called as an expert witness

The US Govt tends to use Times New Roman a lot in their Govt documents still to this day.

1:27 PM
"the crux of the question is whether a person creating a document could have had access to the font before the official release date" the answer to which is clearly yes, they could have had access. That is easy to prove, the opposite isn't... — DavidPostill ♦ 28 mins ago
That make the expert's statement worthless. To prove a forgery you would have to prove that the forger could not have access to the font. That is well nigh impossible to prove (beyond all reasonable doubt). — DavidPostill ♦ 26 mins ago

@DavidPostill That's a pretty sweet answer

@OliverSalzburg Thanks.

Agreed

@DavidPostill its Pakistan... they aren't well known for having a robust and independent justice system

> Pakistani law is based upon the legal system of British India; thus ultimately on the common law of England and Wales.

1:37 PM
doesn't mean it isn't corrupt or flimsy
> We are a conduit for this IP address, and the party responsible for it according to our records is one of our clients. Your complaint has been passed to the client, who will deal with the matter accordingly. Their response will be passed back to you at the e-mail address you raised this report from.
blimey that was quick

@Burgi Spam report?

attempted hacking

I get those every couple seconds here..
denyhosts is pretty sweet though to help with that though.

they've hit every single input form on our site with multiple requests and SQL injection attempts

ah
denyhosts wont help with that then lol

1:43 PM
i wasn't expecting the IP to resolve to a legit source...
i've shoved their IP into the block list on our firewall
@NotAdminDave also the server is a windows box

the funny thing is that our hosting provider and the hacker's provider are part of the same group

assuming you mean netblock
that sucks

i meant corporate entity
both providers belong to iomart.com

@OliverSalzburg or at least crazy.
@DavidPostill which is funny since pakistan became independant shortly before india IIRC

1:58 PM
:D

@JourneymanGeek he is a snail... they do like to munch on planets plants
PLANTS!
I MEANT PLANTS!!!
