Is it normal to have question-specific chat in here instead of the chatroom made to discuss that question? Just for future reference so I don't waste time posting in the wrong place.

@MikeBufardeci I'm not sure what you mean.

@MikeBufardeci It kindof depends on how long the chat is going to be. Short comments are usually held in this room but more extended discussion should be moved to its own room as soon as possible

If a question requires a lot of discussion, it might be worthwhile to make a custom room, but other than that, anything related to the site is explicitly on topic

@DJMcMayhem There was a chat room created to talk about the coin-flipping challenge that was posted today. I voiced my opinion there and was told the discussion was taking place here.

Ahhh

7:11 PM
@DJMcMayhem @WheatWizard The conversation did go on for a while in here, it looks like. Someone even requested that people stop other conversation so that this conversation would be less cluttered

in Discussion on question by SIGSEGV: Flip a coin for me!, 2 hours ago, by Poke
also i think most of the discussion here has moved to TNB
Idk, I think it's fine in either room, but Poke's right, a lot of the discussion did happen in here

Yeah, in the future I will check here before putting my two cents in.

It's kind of a weird situation since this room is supposed to be about PPCG related stuff, but a lot of people use it to hang out and chat (which isn't inherently bad), but sometimes that makes it harder to have on-topic discussions
Huh. This is weird. I have two upvotes today that don't show up in my repbox
(And I'm definitely not capped)

@DJMcMayhem There is a bug rn

user165474
@DJMcMayhem Supposedly, this room is meant to be for PPCG related stuff; the Discord channel is better suited for small talk

user165474
7:16 PM
@WheatWizard That may explain why I also had an upvote that I didn't see in my repbox. Thanks.

I'm just surprised that the room for the coin flipping challenge is not where the conversation took place.

@WheatWizard sauce?

@MikeBufardeci Some of that has to do with there were two separate avenues leading to two separate chats. The "New Main Posts" bot here posted the challenge link (as scheduled), and so there was discussion here that was prompted because of that. Separately, when comments become long, they're moved to an explicit chat room to keep the site clean. Users that were commenting on the challenge were directed there.

@AdmBorkBork Ah, that explains it

Q: Why does the reputation dropdown not show this upvote?

MithrandirOver at Science Fiction & Fantasy, I answered this question: Why did Voldemort choose a snake as a Horcrux given that it is a living thing and has a limited lifespan? (spoilers for Harry Potter 6/7!). This brought my reputation up to 10,565. However... this upvote didn't show up in the dropdown. ...

7:20 PM
@MikeBufardeci I asked two people very nicely not to post random nonsense when there was site-related discussion going on. That was prior to the creation of the other room.

@Mego I thought this room was for chitchat until about two minutes ago, my apologies. I understand what happened now.

specifically, random nonsense = two offtopic messages. One about a misread (five stars) and a response to the previous.

Anonymous
@MikeBufardeci This room is for general discussion. Off-topic conversations are fine when there isn't site-related discussion going on. Random nonsense is not fine.

define "nonsense"

@DJMcMayhem Yep, cool gif. Actually been looking for it for a while, i saw it on r/all like 6 months ago but never saved it

7:24 PM
@DJMcMayhem Do we have a less than zero? I don't see it on the wiki

user165474
So wait, I just wanted to clarify exactly the purposes of this chat. When there's a discussion about the site, it's important and other chitchat should be left for later. When there isn't discussions about specific questions and other chitchat is fine. But never are unintelligible, offensive, derogatory, or otherwise not understandable messages allowed. Am I right?

Anonymous
@JanDvorak If it doesn't add anything to a conversation, it's nonsense.

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino That's a very good way of putting it.

@Mego well then, your definition of nonsense includes normal off-topic chatter

user165474
@Mego Thanks. And additionally, small talk isn't meant for here, right? (So stuff like "How are you", "How was your day", "How's school") Or is it sometimes acceptable?

7:26 PM
@HyperNeutrino I kinda want to pin that. Well put!

user165474
@JanDvorak Not really. Normal off-topic chatter is a conversation in and of itself, so it's adding to the conversation.

user165474
@DJMcMayhem Thanks! And wow, I've never had anything starred before. What a nice surprise :')

Anonymous
@JanDvorak There's a difference between starting/having conversations that aren't necessarily site-related and dumping one's stream of consciousness into the chat. That's the distinction.

then I'd say that the starred message isn't nonsense

Maybe we should make an IRC channel for off topic chatter

7:28 PM
@Mego I don't mind someone's stream of consciousness if it's funny.

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino Typically greetings and small talk are ok, but it shouldn't get in the way of on-topic conversations

Also it did spark a conversation
or three

@KritixiLithos Found a 195 byte Röda solution to the <>< challenge.

Anonymous
@JanDvorak Well that's your personal preference, which doesn't match the topic and etiquette of this room

@HyperNeutrino The problem is that it's really hard to create a good chatting environment through rules. A rule saying "Small talk is fine!" could lead to nothing but small talk, and discussion dies. A rule saying "No small talk at all!" feels... Totalitarian. And Un-fun. So it's really hard to say one way or another. So it mostly comes down to using your judgement

user165474
7:29 PM
@Mego Right. So like I know on-topic conversation is always more important than off-topic

Anonymous
@MendeleevLemon That was done back in the day. It died.

@MendeleevLemon There is a discord server right now! Maybe we should try to direct chattering there

user165474
@fergusq ;_; now both Kritixi and me are just getting outgolfed by other people :((( I knew my solution wouldn't remain the winner for long.

@ГригорийПерельман Just like Jacobellis v. Ohio, "I know it when I see it."

@DJMcMayhem It's almost dead
@Mego ehh

user165474

@Mego if you mean the "adds nothing" rule, then the examples should be revamped if it is to include funny non-conversation-starters

@AdmBorkBork Yes. Exactly

I think it would be easier to make a new room to chat in uninterrupted instead of hoping that you'll be uninterrupted here
But I think I visited this room once at most before today so... yeah

@MikeBufardeci That happened a while ago and there was severe kickback. It was widely regarded as a terrible idea.

@HyperNeutrino I'll post my solution after few days, but I'll give Kritixi some time to find it.

user165474
7:30 PM
@DJMcMayhem I agree. Most people have enough common sense to know when certain things should be said and what should never be said here, so totally specific rules are hard to write.

Anonymous
@JanDvorak Saying something funny/interesting is different than just facerolling on the keyboard.

I'd say the five-star message then counts as funny/interesting, n'est-ce pas?

@fergusq I'll also want to spend some time shortening mine, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do much more. GG It was fun

@DJMcMayhem Weird, it sounds like the obvious solution to me

You literally can't post less than zero messages

Anonymous
@JanDvorak I never said it wasn't?

user165474
@Mego I agree; x such messages are x more than enough.

Ah, good, sorry

Anonymous
7:32 PM
I mean, I starred it, and I'm also seriously considering pinning it

Why would you pin an off-topic message?

Well, that makes two RO's wanting to pin it

user165474
Is the privilege to move a message to Trash given only to chat mods?

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino Room owners and moderators

Unless you talk about the other five-star message, the newer one. I meant the one with cats.

user165474
7:33 PM
Oh okay, thanks.

@JanDvorak Ceci n'est pas une étoile.

Anonymous
I only see one 5-star message on the starboard, so I think we're referring to two different messages

@Mego the cat one
3 hours ago, by SIGSEGV
I somehow read 'one dollar is divided into one hundred cents' as 'one dollar is divided into one hundred cats'

user165474
@MendeleevLemon That one's quite far down...

@MikeBufardeci Part of why people disagreed was because of phrasing and timing. At that time, there was a user that wasn't just noisy, but actively seeked out drama (and did a very good job of finding it). So a mod came in and said "Here, have your own room, we'll call it the noise room!". A Noise room is a terrible idea, and it was phrased like Rude messages/off-topic messages/flamewars and drama are all perfectly fine if they're in their own room. That was what people objected too.

7:34 PM
@HyperNeutrino Not really

I can see 8min ago by Hyperneutrino - that one might be worth pinning - and 3h ago by sigsegv - that one's offtopic but funny.

@HyperNeutrino is in 6th place

user165474
@Mendeleev Well it's 7th, so that's a bit far down, but yeah not really that far

user165474
6th?

7:35 PM
FWIW, the starboard looks different for most users.

Anonymous
@JanDvorak At that point, there wasn't really an on-topic discussion going on. There were a couple of messages, but it was during a lull.

user165474
oh...

@DJMcMayhem I meant something more like moving the serious discussion to another room so it can be in one easily accessible place without noise, not starting a room for noise

well, was 6th. now is 7th

@Mego Oh. I thought it was the one you objected to.

Anonymous
7:36 PM
I don't usually trash messages. Only if they're obvious nonsense or seriously impeding discussion.

user165474
@DJMcMayhem I read that as "The right looks different for most users" because starboard -> right for me ;_; but that makes sense because the starboard is on the starboard side lol :P

Anonymous
@JanDvorak No, that was two other messages later on, when I asked people to not disrupt conversations.

@MikeBufardeci Yeah, but the issue is that the room for serious discussion is this one. It's just that over time, that has become less and less true. But this room is General discussion for codegolf.stackexchange.com so any serious discussions about PPCG should go in here.

user165474
What's the most starred message on TNB?

user165474
@Mego Oh wow. That's... Semi-ironic...

user165474
But I mean it makes sense

@DJMcMayhem I dunno. I'd say with the uptick in ROs and the removal of certain actors, it's overall doing pretty well.

Anonymous
@MendeleevLemon I'd nuke that in a heartbeat :P

7:38 PM
@DJMcMayhem It's just confusing here since I want to talk about that coin flipping challenge, and people stopped talking about it hours ago, and the nature of this room means the conversation is already buried.

@AdmBorkBork Oh absolutely. I think it's been much better recently, but either way, the majority of conversations in here aren't PPCG related.

Anonymous
@MikeBufardeci You can bring it back up, but there's another room that was created specifically for it (as you know).

@Mego would it earn the posters some kicks?

Anonymous
@JanDvorak My foot would be sore

@Mego I am discussing it in that room, but there is only one other person in there at the moment. Plus it's missing the actual discussion, which is buried in here somewhere.

7:40 PM
well, as long as you don't bring some nooses, I'll be glad to stay here :-)

And a lot of that comes down to differing expectations. Some people want a room for only serious discussion (Xnor and Peter Taylor I think) and some people want general chit-chat, a fun place to hang out in. I'd say of the existing RO's, I lean much more towards general conversation, but everyone has their own opinion of what good conversation in here should look like.

Anonymous
@MikeBufardeci I could move the relevant messages over there

user165474
I like how this chat has turned into a conversation about itself... We should have a Meta TNB :D

I could like me a chit chat room with the people that reside here

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem I don't mind the off-topic discussions, so long as they aren't getting in the way of on-topic discussions. However, if it gets to be a constant problem, I'm not going to oppose restricting this room's scope.

7:42 PM
@JanDvorak Have discord?

@Mego that would kill TNB

@MendeleevLemon Does it make the conversation better? Admittedly that's highly subjective, but I know it when I see it.

7:46 PM
I think a problem is that the definiton of 'I know it when I see it' varies strongly per RO

@MendeleevLemon Messages that don't add anything to conversation; either because they are completely irrelevant and distract from conversation, or because they have absolutely no meaning or value.

@Riker I disagree. We all tend to be on the same page. Just because one RO does the trashing/kicking doesn't mean the others don't agree with the action.

Q: Let's Play Hide and Seek!

JKonowitzLet's Play Hide and Seek. The user will hide, and the computer will try to find them. First, the program will take an input, for the size of the grid. 5x5, 10x10, 15x5 The Grid is sort of like a Chessboard: _______________________________ | | | | | | | A1 | | | ...

@Poke if you don't want a permanent scrollbar for the whole page then maybe

8:01 PM
yeah i would think by default i'd only want a scrollbar when it's needed

Are you sure?
A scrollbar popping in causes a change of width, which might potentially cause distracting reflows

What's the concensus about code seperated in multiple files?

Depends on how the language works

Isn't it one byte for extra file?

no, its the code size + filename size
assuming its the case of one file calling another file

Ok

Q: Counting bytes for multi-file programs

Martin EnderSo far, submissions consisting of multiple files have simply been counted by summing up the scores of the individual files. Also file names aren't counted as long as they are arbitrary. (We do count file names if the code depends on them to work correctly, i.e. if actual code is outsourced to the...

Ah. I assumed one-character filenames

Oh, I also have to handle floating-point input, eh.. then I'll forget about it for now. Integer reciprocals would have been doable.

8:25 PM
@Poke I love how it has some attitude when talking. I just can't take that seriously.

@MendeleevLemon ? I don't even know which of my questions you're responding to.

@MartinEnder second one

@MendeleevLemon So what about inputs greater than 9999?

@MartinEnder You won't get them. It would be really cool if your program could handle them though.

But we can get 0.000001000?
If you want answers in string processing languages, the challenge needs an exact specification of a) what range of numbers can be input, b) what formats those numbers can appear in, especially with regard to leading and trailing zeros and decimal points.

8:32 PM
@MartinEnder Can appear in xxxx 0.xxxx x.xxx xx.xx xxx.x

And xxx, xx.x, x.xx, 0.xxx, xx, x.x, 0.xx, x, 0.x?

@ATaco What happened to TacoLemon?

I'm working on a solution, but I'm afraid it won't be below 1000 bytes :(

If you don't like your feeds, talk to the mods and room owners about it. Flagging is non-productive.
@ThomasWard Someone flagged the Sandbox feed post.

clearly warfare is offensive :P

@ThomasWard this room is flagging things that don't need to be flagged.

i see.

we've had a lot of instances of that. Isn't is possible to get a community manager involved or something?

What good would that do?
The users of this room have to learn.

I agree, but right now, there's no mechanism to teach

That's why all the blues dropped in ;)

I understand that you all have special rules in here about what sorts of content is acceptable. I don't think there's anything wrong with that but if you have things that aren't allowed based on your room's rules, you need to use a custom flag to explain it or it's unlikely to get validated.

9:51 PM
@Mithrandir that still leaves room for an abusive user to flag without any sort of checks

@NathanMerrill and that's where us as diamond moderators can show up and squish things that're going on

but if you're seriously flagging things for fun, just don't. it really annoys every moderator and 10k+ user in chat

And is very likely to incite our wrath.
So just don't.

Or worse, it'll incite the Wrath of Shog.

@mods Why not suspend the user who's doing it? They're clearly not learning and that will put an end to it

@DJMcMayhem In general, we can't see who's doing the flagging.

I thought you could

Only custom mod flags.

So there's just nothing we can do?

if it doesn't stop we can probably poke a CM

@DJMcMayhem I'm guessing the CMs can see who it is...

we've had a lot of instances of that. Isn't is possible to get a community manager involved or something?
:)

I've accidentally flagged (by clicking on "valid" when I got a flag to confirm) a message, because I found the wording (of the UX) confusing; I thought "valid" would mean it's a valid message, not a valid flag.

searching our history, it looks like we've had 3 invalid flags in the past hour

@NathanMerrill I think just two.

Why was this closed as not clear?
It's very clear.

Btw, since when can we unupvote comments on mobile? Pretty sure it wasn't possible before.

you always could iirc
you can't unupvote after 5 minutes though
