Just curious, how do you people pronounce PNG as in .png? I internally pronounce it "ping"

as an abbreviation

user165474
@LegionMammal978 I typically just say each letter.

huh
Jul 6 '16 at 23:34, by Geobits
@LegionMammal978 Nah. Good acronyms are pronounceable. Otherwise it's just an initialism :P
Should probably unbelieve that philosophy sooner or later

@LegionMammal978 pee en gee

1:18 PM
I used to spell it out. Then someone pointed out to me that "thing.png" rhymed, and from then on I could never look at it the same way.

user165474
@LegionMammal978 I typically pronounce "jpg/jpeg" as "jpeg" and "gif" as "gif", but I rarely pronounce "png" as "ping" (only occasionally).

A friend of mine used to argue with me a ton over the pronunciation. She said "jif", I say "gif". We came to a compromise: "peanut butter"

@Mego Doesn't that imply "JIF" then, since that's the peanut butter?

Question: Should the "move discussion to chat" feature remove the comments?

I vote yes

user165474
I vote yes, because otherwise the "move discussion" message stays there forever, which doesn't make sense and is also quite annoying.

also, it says "move discussion to chat", not "copy discussion to chat"

user165474
True. That too.

1:53 PM
I vote no, because it would delete comments not supposed to go into the discussion.

good argument
meh, though

user165474
That is a good argument. It's a real two-sided debate though.

It would need some way of selecting which comments to move
*delete
Unless it already has that

user165474
Well, it knows which ones to copy (I think), so I presume it would know which ones to move.

user165474
Not sure though.

1:57 PM
No. You cannot delete comments if you're not a mod or their owner. Why should a loooooong discussion suddenly give you such a power?

user165474
@Erik That is a good point...

Two things 1) they're not deleted, they're moved to chat, and 2) comments are transitory anyway and could be deleted any time for any reason

We are talking about a feature where comments are deleted from the post, and get moved to chat. Some comments that should be right on the post may then require a second mouse-click and waiting time to open the chatroom to see, whereas they could have just been under the post, as they were originally intended to be.
And, of course, there may be the abusers who, given a feature to delete comments they feel are relevant to the discussion and only keep them on chat, vandalize the comment section in this way.

@mınxomaτ Maybe they need some regex to parse their HTML. ;-)

@AdmBorkBork ahem

@Downgoat Why did you call Sed and Grep's expressions not regexes?
They are more regular than PCRE.

1) that was like joke (like "you never new what a car was until you saw the new ford") 2) O_o you reallllly need to read article

How can you be so irresponsible in handling the avg consumer's press.

Anonymous
@Downgoat If you're going to slam CS teachers, maybe you should listen and learn from them first. Nobody ever says that PCRE can't parse (X)HTML. They say that regular expressions can't parse (X)HTML. Regular expressions can match strings formed using regular grammars (the Chomsky/Kleene definition). Most regex engines' features are just syntactic sugar that doesn't add any real power to regex. PCRE regexes aren't regular expressions - it's a misnomer.

3:06 PM
Then what's PCRE if it's not a regular expression?

@Downgoat Mego's got it.

@wat yes

Anonymous
@KritixiLithos PCRE "regexes" are expressions that can recognize strings formed from context-sensitive grammars. They're linear-bounded automatons.

@ThomasWard I really need to find where I can get those second hand

@Mego not unlike my apartment. 69F outside, apartment runs avg. 74F

Edited my answer
Now I am at 0 bytes

@muddyfish doesn't matter

@ThomasWard why?

does valid mean "valid flag"?

4:44 PM
@betseg yes

Hello, World! and Truth machine each have 0-byte built-ins, and there are a ton of languages which naturally solve the cat challenge or "Shortest loop producing no output" in 0 bytes

@muddyfish because it's alreayd being handled, and is on the radar of higher up powers of godliness.

@ThomasWard gods will be gods and do their thing

@ETHproductions Yeah, V does the cat program in 0. And the loop with no output in one

IIRC, there was some complex challenge that someone had implemented a 0-byte builtin for a few weeks prior, but I can't find it
I thought it was in Seriously/Actually

4:46 PM
The "infinite loop with no output" is my challenge :D

I need to think of a fun 0 byte program for pyke

Jelly's 0-byte program naturally outputs 0. Don't think we have a challenge for that though
Japt's outputs undefined

Can one vote to delete a post that has a positive score?

@muddyfish nggyu
Carrot's 0-byte program outputs "" (as in the empty string)

How is it that I don't even use Node and yet:
$ ls -l node_modules/ | wc -l
267
@Downgoat This is obviously your fault

4:51 PM
@WheatWizard No, it has to have a negative score.

@muddyfish You need to balance whether the post is offensive or not or should be deemed as a "valid" use of a flag. If you aren't sure that's what the third button is for.
Irrelevant though now.

That's a ton of downvotes on the "mod the floats" challenge

it's what happens when people race for FGITW without reading through the spec or checking the test cases
