@steelersquirrel Yeah, that's what I said too.
I don't remember Ankit or Ian ever being negative about them either.

I require proof! ;)
Oh my. It seems that his statements are contradictory. I don't know. This is why I would not be good at moderating...one of the many, many, many reasons ;)

@steelersquirrel My thought exactly :-)
I'm not going to engage any further at this point though.

Yeah...it's pointless. Good call! :)

I've flagged a few of his rude comments, and responded to him constructively in comments and an answer. I'll leave it at that.

@Mithrandir You're fighting a battle that you probably can't win :P

*shrug* Probably, but might as well try...

IMO everybody should give up, go get some ice cream, and then eat it while sitting in the corner thinking about their lives

It's 2am,no ice cream

12:13 AM
@Riker I've already had my ice cream for this evening.

you can never have too much ice cream
trust me
I've had 3 bowls today already
and my weight and teeth are both fine <shrug>

@steelersquirrel she's also in jail for selling heroin and then attempting to assault a minor while on it

@steelersquirrel So you're the room aunt to Slytherincess and Catija's room mothers?

Personally, I prefer Patience, you young scallywag!

Hmm ... the Reading Room doesn't have a designated room mother yet ...

@Randal'Thor Yeah. I'm the one that all the kids come over to her house while the mothers are away. I'm a complete pushover ;)

@Randal'Thor I didn't remember because I don't much care about English poetric forms.

@steelersquirrel Aren't you? Seems to me like you're at least one of the top ten chatters in here.

@Randal'Thor Hehe! I like how I am always in the top ten in chatting, but I have hardly any rep ;)

@steelersquirrel you are in 5th top here

@Mithrandir how do you know?
but hm, maybe we should choose some ROs for this chat

@steelersquirrel First, probably.

@steelersquirrel 1st no dur

It only counts people who are present in the room.

ankit is 2nd

Wad isn't on the list for Mos.

12:36 AM
@Randal'Thor no
there's 2 sliders

@HDE226868 not 'go to sleep'? :P

frequently, and currently

Or maybe people who have been present in the room recently?

@Randal'Thor OMG!!! What is the world coming to? NOOOOOOO!!!!

@Riker I know, but even for "frequently" Wad isn't on the list for Mos.

12:37 AM
there's currently and frequently, make sure you choose frequently
@Randal'Thor well then maybe he's not in there frequently enough

Last time I checked, Wad had 10% of all the messages ever in Mos.
He should definitely be high up that list.
Probably at the top.

@Randal'Thor yes. If they have not been in recently, then they are hardly the most active :P

then maybe it's there recently

@Mithrandir Wad is.
Also, Mike is listed below Skooba for Mos even though Mike has 33k posts there and Skooba only 14k.
It's broken, I tell you.

@steelersquirrel 43K... and that's what Napoleon and Ankit have, too... but they've been in the room far longer.

12:38 AM
:'(

@Riker Yeah. Ankit and AJ and I are chatting pretty much through my entire noc shift. Like Wad, Himarm and Mango and I used to do over in Mos ;)

lol

And there I thought I'd found a wonderful new tool.

@Catija Yep! Further proof that I never shut up :P

And apparently there's a maximum of 10 users displayed on the "frequently in room" list.

12:40 AM
AJ is about to overtake me... and he's only been around for a short period of time, right?

@steelersquirrel how long have you been on SE?

You should get yourself a sock to talk to.

Well, seeing how Napoleon likes to ignore me...that's not a bad idea :P

And call it steelersock.

Oh...I know what sock is in German!
Er...wait. Maybe it's glove. Dammit!

12:53 AM
I remember we found out what glove and slipper are in German.
Handschuhe and Hausschuhe?

Yeah!!! Handshoe!!! Right...that's a glove! Notice how I dumbed it down spelled it the "American" way? :P

According to Google Translate, sock in German is Socke.
I need to find some profanities to say to Napoleon when he annoys me...I guess that I can just do that in English as well ;)

There we go, it's more or less the same word as in English for the internet sense too.
@steelersquirrel I recommend "scheisse" to start off with.

12:57 AM
Or rather "Scheiße".

Well, I curse like a sailor in English, anyways... ;)
Time for my rounds! See you guys :)

Later @steeler!
I think I'm going to unstar that.

1:30 AM
@Randal'Thor Awww! :(

@Mick ?
I was referring to the "scheisse" post, which someone starred.

@Randal'Thor I know.

1:57 AM
@Randal'Thor Not at all.
I usually encourage self-answers.
The only thing I could imagine was some rather odd question he had that was clearly worded as some kind of quiz show ID question, which...was not too well-received (even if not "kicked off rudely" either) (though, he didn't even answer it). Other than that he doesn't even have any self-answered questions on Movies & TV. So I really have no idea what he's talking about.
Oh wait, from meta it seems he's against BlogOverflows. Okay, now I'm confused.
That being said, I don't really favour BlogOverflows that ask questions that don't amount to more than a single Wikipedia article or a 3-line answer from the first few Google results. There has to be some value to the question in the first place.
I've only done a single BlogOverflow ever when I found interesting information while doing some private research (for solving an actual real problem related to a film).

Heh. That makes two answers accepted about stuff that I haven't read :P

@Mithrandir Done.

@Benjamin I see, thanks

DO we need a short-story tag?

I don't know. SFF has one...

10:58 AM
@Mithrandir But, there are so many short stories missing it. Should I post it on meta?

Sure, go ahead.
Also, I rejected your edit because it removed a part of the usage guidance.

@Mithrandir Yes, because it caused the usage guidance to not make sense.
@Mithrandir Should I just rearrange it to make sense instead of removing the nonsense?

@Benjamin yes, but I don't think you can until your current one is dealt with

@Mithrandir I'll see.

Q: How should we use [short-stories]?

BenjaminWhat questions should we use short-stories for? Most questions about short stories currently lack it so should we burninate it? If not, should we add it to all questions about all short stories?

0
Q: Should we merge and synonimise [history] and [history-of]?

BenjaminLooking at the history and history-of tags, it is hard to tell which question fall into the history-of tag, without also falling into the history tag. What questions would fall into history-of, but not history? If there are none, should we merge the two tags and synonymise them?

11:09 AM
I am posting lots of meta questions as I am trying to clean up tags right now.

@Benjamin good stuff
[thumbs up]

@doppelgreener Thanks! and @Mithrandir Thanks for the answer.

11:30 AM
@Benjamin pat on the bacl

@AnkitSharma Not surprising really, given how many different rooms he's in.
@Mithrandir And it's almost exclusively used for story-ID questions over there. Also, "SFF has one" isn't a reason in itself either to have one here or not to.

@Randal'Thor but he left screening room few days back :/
Now we don't have a spy to look us on

@AnkitSharma You still have Napoleon ;-)

@Randal'Thor @Mithrandir also SFF tagging was part of controversy a lot and to me short story tag is only helpful for the case of ID, rest no. anyway @Mithrandir nice answer
@Randal'Thor but Napoleon talks to us but bob was the silent protector like Batman

How does auto-deletion of tags work?

@Benjamin An unused tag will disappear after a day or two, I think.

@Randal'Thor What if it is used once?

23
A: I accidentally created a tag. How do I delete it?

Jon SeigelAs waiwai said, there is a script that runs daily to hide (soft-delete) tags that don't have any associated questions. All you need to do is remove the tag from your question, and the script will pick it up automatically. In the case of a less popular tag such as the one you created, it isn't a ...

There may also be some rule about tags which are only used once. I don't remember the details, because SFF opted out of that rule; I'm not even sure if it still applies to new sites these days.

@Randal'Thor movies.se too

11:51 AM
@Randal'Thor I know. I was just pointing it out.

Oh, cool. I didn't know there was an opt-out option for that. That's useful.

@Standback I think if no one significantly minds I am going to retroactively add the tag.

@Benjamin Which tag?

@Benjamin i will go with burn in flames of hell option

The discussion I know about auto-deletion was this one:

11:54 AM
Heh, both of them are at +1/-2.

Q: Do not expire single use tags on Beta sites

yannisTags that have exactly one question are automatically pruned after six months, leaving their questions untagged, and their wikis orphaned. This is problematic on Beta sites, where it's not uncommon for valid tags on niche topics to not get more than one question in a while. Two Beta sites are t...

@Randal'Thor One problem I have is the pluralization though.

@Benjamin Please don't start adding the tag to lots of questions before we have a meta consensus.
4
That's what meta is for: getting a consensus. If you don't get one in the first hour after posting, that doesn't mean you can then go and do whatever you like.

@Randal'Thor I meant after the consensus as opposed to Standback's proposal of doing it never.

@Benjamin Right, if there is a consensus that we want the tag, then adding it to existing questions (slowly, a few at a time) makes sense.

12:00 PM
Oh cool. Apparently I got Strunk and White...

It seems my differentiation between the two issues was significant to some :P

whoops, fiddling with keyboard, ignore that

@Standback nice answer

@Mithrandir I will try, but I might not succeed.

1:07 PM
I just hit this suggestion. 'Lemony Snicket' is the author's well-known pseudonym, and it makes more sense to use that tag than , right?

Yes.
Although could set up a synonym.

@AnkitSharma : Thanks! I was intrigued enough by the question to go trawling. :-)

@Standback will accept it later too

@HDE226868 : They kinda both make sense?
@HDE226868 : Like, a Lemony Snicket book might not say "Daniel Handler" on it anywhere.
Tag synonym, maybe?

That's what I said...
:P

1:14 PM
...and how many pseudonyms does Robin Hobb have?

@Standback Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I rejected the edit, at any rate. I may make a meta post later.

I kind of wish we could introduce a metadata system which was orthogonal to tags.
So we could note title, creators, collaborators, pseudonyms... in addition to "what is this question about" or "what kind of question is this."
That would be not what SE does, I'm sure, but it feels appropriate to things like Lit.SE, SFF, Movies...

Q: How should we deal with authors who use pseudonyms?

HDE 226868We currently have tags for a few authors (or groups of authors) that wrote under pseudonyms, such as lemony-snicket and franklin-w-dixon. Literature may have problems because the best answers to the best questions require a good deal of research, which takes time and minimizes the chances of getting on the HNQ. Most people can't get quotes or write excellent analyses off the top of their heads in, say, 30 minutes.
Self-answers, if done beforehand, would of course be the exception.

If people don't ragequit because of self answers >.<
