4:01 PM
@Zanna Nice post!

Hi, I wanted to boot Ubuntu from an USB drive but it get stuck everytime. I pressed esc during the boot screen and it's stuck at this process: cups.service
Any idea how to fix this?
PS: THe fan starts every ~30 seconds for about 10 seconds

@Zanna How would you join the Trello group?

user136984
@TechTreeDev: Oh dear, it's looks like Lubuntu is going to have to do a respin, unless I got my info wrong.

user136984
I just have to figure out who's wrong first, Lubuntu, or the news.

"the news"
@ParanoidPanda share link to the news, or it's a lie

4:06 PM
lel

user136984
@ThomasWard: I will explain in a moment once I've checked it out for myself.

considering I have someone on the Lubuntu team I could poke it's why i'm asking lol

EVIL! I mean, hi! :)
had too much coffee
@NathanOsman did you see that recent email/bugreport?

4:18 PM
@ThomasWard I've come to the conclusion that you have exactly two states: i) haven't had enough coffee and ii) too much coffee. Since the two are mutually exclusive, that can't be fun for you.
:P

good afternoon!

@ThomasWard Yup.

G'day all! :-)

@terdon There's a third state, and a fourth state

@ThomasWard Oh?

4:21 PM
the third state is just plain dead tired
the fourth state is one that shall not be stated here

@terdon and technically there's an unverifiable fifth state

@OwenHines Cor Blimey! You're on it, are you the new @Zanna?

All of which, however, can overlap with the 1st two, so I don't buy it :)

shrugs

4:25 PM
Who knows! I just have a lot of free time @Arronical

@terdon fourth mode usually results in a high level of wrath, so it's rare to see it
the full description is dangerous so it shall not be mentioned more here

My classes are easy so I get my work done and just answer questions/edit

@OwenHines Oh to have those days back!

@OwenHines Sounds like most of my classes. Though I currently am procrastinating in some of my classes here on Ask Ubuntu during lecture

@ThomasWard OK, but it is wrath experienced while in one of the two master states: too much or too little coffee. No, no, all other states are subservient to those two.

4:26 PM
@terdon Actually the wrath state is documented to happen purely in an unrelated state to the two master states

Well, 9th grade's pretty easy so I have plenty of time.

even with enough coffee (there is a good quantity of coffee to have, though it's hard to get it exact), it can happen. And then all else doesn't matter. Only known to have happened three times in the past two years
once was when someone attacked me. once was when someone attacked a friend. and once was when someone tried to break into the apartment.
oops looks like I need the 16.10 released images now

hello all

@ThomasWard Did you throw your coffee at them?

Hello!

4:28 PM
Don't ping me @pingOfDoom.

ahaha ayoo
for the administrative base user in an ubuntu system

@terdon Don't be silly, he would drink it and spit it in their face.

is there anything that comes before/after the identifier

no, that would be a waste of coffee @OwenHines

@jokerdino But so would throwing it

4:29 PM
because im trying to reset my password via root access and its not recognizing the username

@pingOfDoom What command are you using?

passwd

ops
damn it, stupid chat

no worries
what a nonsequiter tho lol

@terdon you're a mod, go look at the history on that post for your answer :P
@pingOfDoom And you verified the user exists in the system? (cat /etc/passwd | grep USERNAME)

4:31 PM
yes indeed

@ThomasWard Oh wow. Remind me to bring you coffee if ever we meet face to face!

will do.

@pingOfDoom So you're running sudo passwd [USER]?

yup

@terdon as i said, that elusive wrath state is rarely triggered, and happens independent of coffee intake or the other modes. :P

4:33 PM
and the constant output is user <User> does not exist

@pingOfDoom And it's saying that the user specified doesn't exist?
oh

haaalp!

@pingOfDoom by 'via root access' you mean via the recovery shell?
or a livecd?

recovery shell

user136984
@ThomasWard This

4:34 PM
@ParanoidPanda i'll poke someone

user136984
@ThomasWard: Great! Thanks! :)

user136984
I don't really use Lubuntu, but as I saw that not all of their mandatory tests had been done for this release I thought I should do one (it is now 4/4).

@ParanoidPanda given that that seems like a relatively minor issue, i don't think it needs a full respin though

what could the issue be?

user136984
@ThomasWard: I know the issue in itself is small, however if I were in charge of Lubuntu, I wouldn't want my finished product to have this sort of issue.

4:42 PM
S****I
\o/

@Arronical way faster than me

@Zanna But you actually have knowledge of higher-level questions which will always get you reliable upvotes for answers, etc. I just got lucky with easy questions/lots of edits

@OwenHines that sounds exactly like me, I only know obvious stuff :)

Well, doesn't seem like it. Thanks for the good work.
Also, on the Trello board, is there any way I can join?

It's pretty difficult if you don't have 3k, so maybe you can join us next week ;)

4:51 PM
heh 3k next week
:)

Upgrading stable => testing.

5:23 PM
@OwenHines You're doing great I'd say as a new user (y)

@Anwar Thank you!

I was trying to answer a question which asked transparent panel. So, I modified files from themes. That didn't work. But now after re-installing MATE, when I start nautilus, the header-bar is completely transparent!

Argh

@Zanna ?

want to see it?

5:36 PM
Sympathies to @Anwar

Thinking if I should consider this as feature :D

I like it well enough
My XFCE environment just looks ugly

but i don't know how I made them transparent ...

Ugly as hell

my topbar is transparent, but i run compiz

5:44 PM
topbar as top-panel?
@OwenHines what theme it was?

my bottom and top launchers also autohide, so i couldn't show them both at once

xfce?

@Anwar Yeah

@Anwar yes. xfce on 16.04 + compiz

how do you get titlebar in chrome?

5:47 PM
it's chromium, but chrome has it mark as visible in options
i use the titlebar to distinguish between the two though

@ParanoidPanda Nothing can be done for 16.10 on that bug

Oh.

target confirmed 17.04 for a fix

@RobotHumans XFCE can be made better.

@Anwar ^^^

5:49 PM
@Anwar yes, but i'm just waiting for lxqt to drop

Oh. Me too.

oh 16.10 was released?
I'm so out of the loop now -.-

@Seth pin on the starwall, go read :)

Yakkety Yak don't talk back ;) I haven't upped to latest. As we all know, I like to run LTS

Same question again for me. Upgrade or Stay with LTS.

5:50 PM
@ThomasWard that's how I found out ;p

anyone know if plasma 5.8 made it into Yakkety?

no idea. hope so. i like how KDE is starting to split their packages better

@OwenHines add some theme. Arc theme is good. Also change the window decoration theme matching with the gtk/xfce theme.

@Anwar Where would I get the Arc theme?
How would I do the window thing as well?
Because I cringe every time I look at my desktop

5:52 PM
change window decoration from settings -> window manager may be

@jokerdino depending on unity-webapps-common just broke utt. Can't install now because of a broken dependency chain. webapps-common -> webapps-services -> webapps-container. Or maybe it's just a PPA I have somewhere.
Can anyone test that? --^
try to install unity-tweak-tool on Xenial.

I installed unity-tweak-tool on Xenial

@Seth what about unity-tweak-tool? i have it already

hmm
I thought I had it too, but it wasn't installed.
I bet I installed something else that broke it and removed it.

Upgrade to testing complete. Next: upgrade to unstable.

5:58 PM
I'm a little unstable. I need my operating system to be rock solid ;)

Don't worry, this is a Debian VM.

Q: Made an edit to a question but didn't get credit for it. Instead, OP did

wjandreaI just edited this question: Incorrect resolution and no wifi and no usb after update, but didn't get credit for it. Instead, the credit seems to have gone to OP. What happened there? Did OP copy-paste my edit and claim it as his own, or is this a bug?

6:14 PM
@Seth oh :O

@jokerdino might just be my config
I'll look into it this weekend.

Anyone here good with Windows/Ubuntu dual boot?

depends on the issue

When trying to boot to my Ubuntu installation I jusr get "missing operating system," but I cant check the filessystem because for Windows to boot correctly I cannot have any other drive plugged in

I'm off to lunch. See y`all later! :=)

6:18 PM
@Anwar Arc isn't for 14.04 I don't think

Making an Ubuntu bootable USB now
gonna see if I can repair from there

@OwenHines Trusty uses Gnome 3.16?
oh. I think it's 3.12
Then bad luck. Arc needs 3.16 at least

@Anwar It says can't find package when I do sudo apt-get install arc-theme soooo

But 14.04 has some good themes. Check that PPA.

@OwenHines arc-theme | 20161005-1 | yakkety/universe | source, all
looks like Yakkety only, unless you have a PPA

6:21 PM
noobslab ppa

oh. arc-theme made it to the official repo!! nice

@Anwar Do you personally know any good ones? There's so many and I don't want to test them all...

installs all of them

^^^
gets black screen perfect theme, get the best of all of them

yeah. I was missing many of them in 16.04.
@OwenHines first, don't install those with 'ambiance' name. Those are crap

6:25 PM
In fact, I don't think it can find any themes... lemme restart my environment

candra-gs-theme, delorean-dark, ceti-theme, evolve (as far as i remember it was good), flattis-theme, numix-gtk-theme,

Hi guys.
Should this not belong to the main site instead of meta? meta.askubuntu.com/q/16229/367990
It got migrated yesterday, but I would vote to migrate it back.

@Anwar How can I check if the PPA is working?

It's not about the site Ask Ubuntu, it's a technical question about accessing the site, which seems not to be specific to it.

@OwenHines try to install a theme?

6:27 PM
Oh, nevermind, just had to reload again for some reason

user136984
@ThomasWard: Don't you do Meta posts for releases or are those just for EOLs?

1
Q: I really need help with my question, how do I get help?

jenboiI am a new user with only one question, but I really need help with it. I am new to Linux and therefor have no ability to answer or edit questions, and without a rep of 20 I am not able to chat with people asking if someone can help me out. I have taken great steps to avoid wasting anybody's ...

@ParanoidPanda usually only EOL notices

@AskUbuntuMeta :'(

wait a second
that seems odd

6:28 PM
@Anwar I installed the numix-gtk-theme and it did it successfully. How do I put it into effect?

@jokerdino can't users edit their own stuff?

user136984
@ThomasWard: Maybe it would be good to do it for new releases as well. Because many don't come into chat and may not realise and thus still close questions on 16.10 as off-topic.

@ParanoidPanda you can do it if you want

@OwenHines Settings manager -> Appearance.

is busy

6:29 PM
@ThomasWard yes, they can.

oh wait i misread

user136984
@ThomasWard: I am also busy at the moment, so maybe later if nobody has already done it. :)

@AskUbuntuMeta :'(

@jokerdino hugs

@Zanna :') hugs

6:31 PM
:)

Now OP can join us in chat at least.. :/

Ping Takkat with that question?

@Anwar That's the only window I have for themes

@OwenHines It's for changing the window border

@Anwar yeah, there's nothing else

6:34 PM
There should be another labeled with "Apperance"
You installed half-xfce then

ohhh nooooooo
crouton why

can you run xfce4-appearance-settings from terminal?

nope

install xfce4-settings

Alright, got into appearance settings and like nothing changes
just the window borders
still just the ugly desktop

6:42 PM
install other themes and see.

well, apparently that's as close as it gets: webupd8.org/2013/12/…
brb

What is the Debian equivalent of ubuntu-desktop?
(Plz plz plz plz say there is one...)

debian-desktop? lol

@OwenHines i see some pretty cool things people do with xfce reddit.com/r/unixporn/search?q=xfce&restrict_sr=on

6:50 PM
I think they use DE specific desktop meta packages.

Except I'm on KDE.
@jokerdino thanks!
That will work brilliantly.

Lol.. you found it but I will take the thanks anyway ;)

I wish there was a quicker way to upgrade from Jessie to unstable...

@Anwar I think I broke my crouton chroot
chronos@localhost / $ sudo startxfce4
Entering /mnt/stateful_partition/crouton/chroots/trusty...
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
WARNING: starting chroot system dbus daemon failed with code 139

segfault oops

6:59 PM
RIP OS?
Cuz I had some cool stuff for my Cydia repo on there :/
I should probably backup next time

oops!
I didn't know you were using chroot
@jokerdino why was this answer deleted? askubuntu.com/a/102599/61218

@Anwar what does that change?

??
nothing :)

@Anwar edited into Manish's answer.

7:06 PM
@Anwar I hope that this gets answered github.com/dnschneid/crouton/issues/2825

200 \o/

200 rep for the day?

Oh. I missed that edit
A separate answer helps in this case

Yes 139 so 11 to go

@Rinzwind :|

7:09 PM
3 more and u overtake oil :-)

139 now :)

You can do it @Anwar

Needs time

There is a q on front page about anything
Grrr
About auth. Easy rep
Stupid autocorrect
Zero lex

Nearly 2 GB of packages later...

@jokerdino normally we would reject that in a review as too substantial, because it could make up an answer on its own, right?

No, he is just expanding the answer.
But it could be argued either ways, yes.

Sure it adds valuable information, but the edit is almost bigger than the original...
There should be a convert-edit-to-answer...

I think he made bullets out of the 3 lines of original post.
Apart from adding additional info about installing alsa-ultils.

7:21 PM
I won't complain about that specific one, just making sure I act appropriately if I get such a thing to review.

I can't really tell without seeing the edits.. it's going to be case-by-case as you would know.

@jokerdino expanding or correcting? I think there is no such thing as alsa-utis

yeah, probably...
@Anwar revision 3
brb

so this is better :P

oh ho.
@Rinzwind ?

7:24 PM
Good night then.

on notebook instead of phone ;-)
who is leaving @jokerdino

@Rinzwind today is a bad day :(

is it?

I think I might have lost all of the source code for my Cydia tweaks

got to 200 so not tooooo bad >:)

7:25 PM
Because I broke my chroot on chromebook
hopefully I can recover files

@OwenHines :(

Next time I gotta backup sooo I guess this is a good lesson?

>:-D

grrrrrrr, some people . . .

I never ever have lost a file.
Am I the only one? :X
all my stuff is always backupped to 2 locations: a usb and online :P

7:29 PM
Sigh
Thanks! I tried several things. Some based off of your answer. Tried installing older kernel and older xserver-xorg, but ran into problems installing the actual drivers - there being no fglrx package in 16.04 repos. So I tried installing the proprietary drivers manually from AMD homepage - didnt succeed in it. Maybe that was just me. Eventually I solved my problem by installing 14.04 and not updating the kernel (which the Software Updater wants to do all the time, using apt upgrade instead). Since this isnt really the answer to the question I asked here, I shouldnt mark it as an answer. — Carolus 6 mins ago

zachy!
what is wrong?
"So I tried installing the proprietary drivers manually from AMD homepage " there are no prop drivers for amd for 16.+ :P

So OP asks question about 16.04 , switches back to 14.04, and says solution for 16.04 isn't an answer
I'm sorry, but OP is . @#$!@#$%

:D
OPs are like that :)

I think I'm more irritable today. Sorry guys, I might sound a bit pissed off today. Not mad at anyone in particular, just one of those days

7:56 PM
ah well. Ill be back 2morrow

cya

Hmmmm . . . question guys, what would be a good service for saving bookmarks ?
Like work-specific bookmarks, something a long the lines of feedly

Hello all. Oh Look another X/Y problem.. askubuntu.com/questions/836625/…

sigh . . . issue ticketing system that doesn't let you delete your own ticket. . . .a-fscking-mazing design

@Serg service? Links in an HTML document seem to be effective...

8:07 PM
@ElderGeek well, carrying around a documents on USB is OK with me . . . but not ideal . . . actually . . .I might use my slack account or something

Ahh. I follow you. Google Docs perhaps?

that ! good idea

AHHHHHHH YEAH
woops a little too excited
After breaking my chroot I finally found out where my files were after sifting through directories so I can get the info I wanted and then reinstall

Gotta love find
I guess I'm overdue to load up a VM with 16.10....

8:35 PM
Haven an invitation to discussion on meta, guys
Feel free to participate
Ok . . . blog . . .I need to set up a blog

Q: Purpose of down-vote on non-questions

SergAs we all know, downvote is supposed to express that question is not useful. But not all posts that we have here are questions ; hence the question: what do downvotes do to a non-question ? What is the reasoning behind downvoting a post that is meant to report a bug of sorts ? My stance is this...

@KazWolfe lunix? i like that name

@KazWolfe "Does your son want better hardware for his computer? Kick his ass out right out away!"

i have no doubt there are people out there who would actually believe what the post says

You guys know any <$1000 laptops that'd be good to run Ubuntu smoothly on? The most resource-intensive task I'd be doing is running network diagnostics/downloads/command-line based things.
@edwinksl It's a sad world we live in

8:59 PM
@OwenHines SELECT * FROM `computers` WHERE `computers`.`Type` == "Laptop"

@KazWolfe k

gab.ai <--- I'm in the queue >:)

What's that? @NathanOsman

It's a free speech social network thing.
I don't have too many details yet.
It's still in beta.
...and written in... PHP?

Free speech? Can't you just post whatever on Twitter or something

9:13 PM
O_o
@OwenHines Twitter has gotten a lot of negative press lately for doing the opposite.

Like what? I'd love to see some examples because I'm genuinely curious

@OwenHines just about any of them will be fine. You might want to choose a lightweight flavor though.. askubuntu.com/questions/206407/…

@OwenHines The whole #FreeMilo thing, for one. (Note: I'm not necessarily in agreement with what the user who had their account revoked had said, but nonetheless, the account shouldn't have been closed.)
They make some fair points but I still don't agree that PHP is worth the pain.

you would pick go wouldn't you :p

9:29 PM
I'd pick Java over PHP.

anyone around?

no, everyone is asquare

lol let me remember what my question was

@Serg #sergjokes

so here is my question
I have my Right alt key remapped to the PgUp/Prior key but if I hold it down it activates the top bar in ubuntu is there any way to stop this?
I want to be able to hold it down to make the page go up

9:37 PM
Yes , via compizconfig-settings-manager

compizconfig-settings-manager: command not found

@William it doesn't come with ubuntu by default , needs installation
sudo apt-get install conpizconfig-settings-manager
Then this ----->
Disable the Key to show the HUD one

@Serg I want the left alt key to work but not the right one

hmmm, that might be a problem then

should i open a question or is it unlikely to get answers

9:54 PM
@William yeah, probably ask a question, mention that compizconfig doesn't distinguish between left and right alt
TIL I can do this:
  1 #include <stdio.h>
  2
  3 print_welcome()
  4 {
  5     printf("Welcome user");
  6 }
  7
  8 main()
  9 {
 10     print_welcome();
 11     return 0;
 12 }

you must not have tons of computer programming experience then\=

Sure, compiler throws warnings, but if you need to write a quick and dirty function, hell yeah

it is the same as javascript
or is it the fact it doesn't have return statment
what is unquie about it

@William not really a lot of experience. I've studied C , mostly work in python nowadays, used to do far more bash scripts than i do now.

@Serg and what makes the c you posted special
also what menu is the compiz setting
under

9:57 PM
@William which script ? the one above ? That's C , not a script
@William under Unity Plugin

CRop-tastic tagged network manger then claims not using it after I provide an answer..... I'm done for the day. Good bye all! askubuntu.com/questions/836584/…

@William Well, the special thing about that is the fact that in C typically you have to declare function return type , for example print_message() would be void print_message(). Turns out, however, that if you can ommit the declaration, and the function will default to int return type. The compiler will give warnings, but if you need to whip out quick and dirty code - that can be done
Also , that makes it look like bash function , which is a way to troll someone
