Hi, I wanted to boot Ubuntu from an USB drive but it get stuck everytime. I pressed esc during the boot screen and it's stuck at this process: cups.service Any idea how to fix this? PS: THe fan starts every ~30 seconds for about 10 seconds
@ThomasWard I've come to the conclusion that you have exactly two states: i) haven't had enough coffee and ii) too much coffee. Since the two are mutually exclusive, that can't be fun for you.
@ThomasWard OK, but it is wrath experienced while in one of the two master states: too much or too little coffee. No, no, all other states are subservient to those two.
even with enough coffee (there is a good quantity of coffee to have, though it's hard to get it exact), it can happen. And then all else doesn't matter. Only known to have happened three times in the past two years

I don't really use Lubuntu, but as I saw that not all of their mandatory tests had been done for this release I thought I should do one (it is now 4/4).
@ThomasWard: I know the issue in itself is small, however if I were in charge of Lubuntu, I wouldn't want my finished product to have this sort of issue.
@Zanna But you actually have knowledge of higher-level questions which will always get you reliable upvotes for answers, etc. I just got lucky with easy questions/lots of edits
I was trying to answer a question which asked transparent panel. So, I modified files from themes. That didn't work. But now after re-installing MATE, when I start nautilus, the header-bar is completely transparent!
@jokerdino depending on unity-webapps-common just broke utt. Can't install now because of a broken dependency chain. webapps-common -> webapps-services -> webapps-container. Or maybe it's just a PPA I have somewhere.

When trying to boot to my Ubuntu installation I jusr get "missing operating system," but I cant check the filessystem because for Windows to boot correctly I cannot have any other drive plugged in

Thanks! I tried several things. Some based off of your answer. Tried installing older kernel and older xserver-xorg, but ran into problems installing the actual drivers - there being no fglrx package in 16.04 repos. So I tried installing the proprietary drivers manually from AMD homepage - didnt succeed in it. Maybe that was just me. Eventually I solved my problem by installing 14.04 and not updating the kernel (which the Software Updater wants to do all the time, using apt upgrade instead). Since this isnt really the answer to the question I asked here, I shouldnt mark it as an answer. — Carolus6 mins ago
As we all know, downvote is supposed to express that question is not useful. But not all posts that we have here are questions ; hence the question: what do downvotes do to a non-question ? What is the reasoning behind downvoting a post that is meant to report a bug of sorts ?

You guys know any <$1000 laptops that'd be good to run Ubuntu smoothly on? The most resource-intensive task I'd be doing is running network diagnostics/downloads/command-line based things.

@William Well, the special thing about that is the fact that in C typically you have to declare function return type , for example print_message() would be void print_message(). Turns out, however, that if you can ommit the declaration, and the function will default to int return type. The compiler will give warnings, but if you need to whip out quick and dirty code - that can be done
Also , that makes it look like bash function , which is a way to troll someone
