Yeah, thinking of trying it.
Trying to confirm that the slowdown is at MySQL instead of in the Rails connection somewhere.
yeah, this is nuts
I'm reproing the numbers miniprofiler is giving in the MySQL console.

Part of me thinks that miniprofiler is or was lying.
The other part knows that there's no way.
Pages like metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/37397 were supposedly loading in ~10-15ms. It's an order of magnitude higher now.
I guess this is why I optimized the crap out of it. Can afford stuff like this.

@Andy Lemme try something, just a sec.

That's the only page so far that seems to take more than a second though.
Even the graphs are under 500ms

ugh, updating an LTS release really, really shouldn't do this

Based on that report linked above, I'm guessing it is MySQL that is the problem, right?

@Andy As far as I can see

It really feels like I had this problem with an upgrade a few years ago, but I can't find anything in my files that say how I fixed it.

4:46 AM
I may have to just shut the whole thing down for tonight, then roll back MySQL to a saner version tomorrow

You've mentioned it already, but MariaDB may be an option too

@Andy I tried that. It didn't want to migrate data.

Reading the questions and non-answers on Ask Ubuntu convinced me not to upgrade to 16.04...

yeah, I should have heeded that.
but I just assumed "hey, LTS release, must be fine"
Or at least supported. They've had time to fix this stuff.
Okay. Here's what I'm going to do.
metasmoke and everything else on erwaysoftware.com will be down until morning US time, at least. I might be rebuilding everything on 14.04, yay me.
Also, take full system backups, people. This could have been avoided so easily if I'd made a snapshot before upgrading.
these mysql CPU bursts aren't sustainable; I'll wake up to a deadlocked server.
16.04 LTS isn't even an option when launching a new instance. That says something.
afk, sleep time.

so they're caught straight away
it appears they're going to try and go across the sties

@GregP There's addblu for that. It doesn't drop reports to other rooms.
The Tavern doesn't look great right now.

@zaq I was thinking a few days ago about turning off allspam for the Tavern.

zaq
Then it becomes equivalent to addblu, I guess. SOCVR already doesn't get it.
Maybe we just don't need allspam at all?
There is often duplication in that someone says !!/allspam, someone else does batch report; in this or the other order.
The fact that allspam doesn't tell anything to MetaSmoke is a contributor here.

Yeah... not sure what to do with it.

hm what is it supposed to do?

zaq
If a user has 20 posts, we probably want modflags rather than 20*6 flags.
Perhaps allspam could just show the message saying that there's batch report available for up to 5 posts, and mod flags are better when there are more.

@angussidney Better not to worry about the reports that far into the past. If it happens that (a) Metasmoke received the report, but (b) did not receive any feedback, this is easy enough to fix from Metasmoke's own review.

Okay. Operation fix-the-server-before-I-go-out-of-town-again is commencing.
1) I'm going to try to save this one; probably means trying MariaDB
2) Otherwise, I'm rebuilding everything on 14.04. I don't think that'll happen, but it's possible
first, creating an image of how stuff is right now. Hopefully that'll keep me from royally messing something up.
At least not irreparably.
@zaq I'd support that

@SmokeDetector f
Using Maria instead of MySQL cut memory usage down by ~400MB; 257MB RES instead of ~700
Which is huge on a server with 1G RAM
Also getting hit with this one:

Q: KswapD0 use 100% CPU

dupontAfter upgrde from 15.10 to 16.04, I noticed my netbook fan was constantly turning at full throtle. I checked the process mnitoor and noticed KswapD0 used 100% of one core. What is the problem ? Because of this, my netbook is slow and i'm afraid of processor overheating.

Did you figure out why the data didn't transfer last night?

@Andy Never did. I just manually restored it from the last nightly backup
I suspect it was something simple. Maria was complaining about the version being incompatible, pointing to a file that didn't exist. I could probably have created that file and tricked it into working.
Trying the touch /etc/udev/rules.d/40-vm-hotadd.rules thing
Ideally I haven't just fried that instance :P
nope, there we go

actually it is kind of an answer
I also k'ed it
but I think the op is using the one word as a way of showing how it can dwindle to one word

zaq
> How could a totalitarian government (or ruling entity) gradually diminish a language until it's expressed in just one word?
Don't see how the answer explains that.
But I think it's more on NAA side.
@SmokeDetector n

@zaq well it's a word that the author expects would be the remaining word and the process by which it would expect an authority to achieve this in it's citizens (quite clever really). However I didn't retract my flag, it's like meh
maybe I should
