7:00 PM
@drobilc oh thanks

Well, I'm about to pay for phinotpi.com from internet.bs
#yolo?

TIL gists onebox

That was some intense oneboxing.

7:03 PM
@PhiNotPi onebox?

@drobilc When links are expanded to show their content in chat.

@PhiNotPi oh, interesting :)

Box (plural: boxes) describes a variety of containers and receptacles for permanent use as storage, or for temporary use, often for transporting contents. Boxes may be made of durable materials such as wood or metal, or of corrugated fiberboard, paperboard, or other non-durable materials. The size may vary from very small (e.g., a matchbox) to the size of a large appliance. A corrugated box is a very common shipping container. When no specific shape is described, a box of rectangular cross-section with all sides flat may be expected, but a box may have a horizontal cross section that is square...
@drobilc like that ^

@Bálint On average, do German written numbers take more or fewer characters than binary?
Mini-challenge: Given N, output the ceiling of the mean number of characters needed to describe an integer from 0 to N-1 in binary

7:07 PM
@trichoplax If you need some examples to translate, feeld free to ping=)

@trichoplax can you clarify?

what is 'describe'? what is 'characters'?

For example, the integer 0 takes 1 character to describe in binary: 0
The integer 10 takes 4 characters in binary: 1010

you mean... bits?

7:09 PM
@orlp That would be equivalent - is that easier to parse?
(I mean to parse mentally...)

also does it have to be the ceiling?

Given N, output the ceiling of the mean number of bits in an integer from 0 to N-1

ceiling in Python is annoying :(

I suppose floor would be just as good and avoids adding in an extra task to the challenge
Mini-challenge: Given N, output the floor of the mean number of bits in an integer from 0 to N-1

floor is way worse conceptually though

7:12 PM
@trichoplax Hm, 1023 in binary is 1111111111, in german it is "Eintausenddreiundzwanzig"

the ceiling tells you an upper bound
lambda n:sum(len(bin(n))-2for n in range(n))/n
that's with real division
if you want flooring, use // or execute in Python 2

Yes I initially said ceiling because it would be more useful practically, but golf doesn't need practical application :)
Actually, there's no reason for it to be an integer
Mini-challenge: Given N, output the mean number of bits in an integer from 0 to N-1
Is the mini-challenge now sufficiently golfed?

yes :)

@trichoplax 123456 is 11110001001000000, and "einhundertdreiundzwanzigtausendvierhundertsechsundfünfzig"

@Bálint The Strangest German Numbers | KAUDERWELSCH?

7:14 PM
Pyth: /lsm.BdUQQ

@Bálint Interesting. It seems German numbers fall somewhere between unary and binary in efficiency

Yes
And also in character count
There's a german word: "Rindfleischetikettierungs-überwaschungs-aufgabenübertragungsgesetz"

One hundred and twenty three thousand four hundred and fifty six

an estimation for this formula is log2(1) + log2(2) + log2(3) + ... + log2(n-1), which is the same as log2(1*2*3*...*n-1), or in other words, log2((n-1)!)/n

what about slovenian numbers?

7:16 PM
ein hundert drei und zwanzig tausend vier hundert sechs und fünfzig
German is 1 character longer

123456 = sto triindvajset tisoč štiristo šestinpetdeset

@Bálint 57 characters in German, 64 characters in UK English, 56 in US English

@Bálint close enough

And it literally says "one hundred three and twenty thousand four hundres six and fifty"
@MartinBüttner Yeah, I'm not the best currently
Yeah, sechzehn, not sechszehn
123456 = százhuszonháromezer-négyszázötvenhat in my language
@drobilc slovenian is the most compact currently
Wait, no
Mine is 2 characters shorter

@Bálint Mhmm :)

7:20 PM
@orlp You just have to deal with the awkward case of 0, which requires 1 character not 0

if N==0 then our range is 0 to -1

@trichoplax (1+log2((n-1)!))/n

@Bálint Hungarian?

@flawr Yup

@Poke Good point. I'd better make it N>=1

7:22 PM
@flawr how did you guess that?

@Bálint google probably :)

Mini-challenge: Given N>=1, output the mean number of bits in an integer from 0 to N-1

I've wanted to write a challenge where you have to implement a minimal scheme for a long time now

@orlp not really my area of expertise but looks fairly clear to me?

7:23 PM
@trichoplax test cases pleease

@Bálint Your name and then this combination of accents /letters

@Bálint also "eins"

@MartinBüttner Thanks

@MartinBüttner Is this not what I envisioned under 'visualization'?

@orlp there's infovis and scivis. your graph looks more like infovis to me, whereas scivis (what I'm currently working on), is more about visualising data from scientific simulations like fluid simulations and stuff. it's usually a problem of visualising high-dimensional physical data.

7:26 PM
N=1: 1
N=2: 1
N=3: 1.333333
N=4: 1.5
N=5: 1.8

@orlp (also I don't consider myself that much of an expert at this point, I only started my research in this field quite recently ;))

@MartinBüttner like choosing the right projections over time?

@trichoplax n=>{s=0;for(i=0;i<n;i++){s+=i.toString(2).length};return s/n}
FGITW

@Bálint SFGITW

@trichoplax ?

7:30 PM
@orlp things like that, also feature extraction, visualising similarities between multiple simulations of the same systems and stuff like that

Second fastest - after orlp... :)
(I haven't tested either though)

It is confusingly difficult to tell what's real and what's not. :P

@trichoplax Didn't see the first answer

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ @El'endiaStarman I am updating the JsFiddle to show the shortest moves to get to the current position, but it hangs the browser tab. Any idea what's wrong? jsfiddle.net/od3yy7s2/5
Change the 5 to a 4 in the URL to see what I had before. Code was converted from Python: repl.it/CUK5

can't right now

7:34 PM
It's alive!

@PhiNotPi bravo!

is that db locked down
because you're basically handing out the creds

@Poké mon

@El'endiaStarman The foley makes all the difference

7:38 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Saw that too, and I liked it too. :P

@Bálint I've made several revisions to the mini-challenge as people pointed out problems...

@zyabin101 now if only there wasn't a space

@El'endiaStarman :D

@Poke Referring to that KOTH server? Not really, nobody's ever used it for anything.

don't underestimate the glory of the youtube recommended sidebar.

7:39 PM
Well, I've subscribed to Corridor Digital, so...
My favorite video of theirs is Clock Blockers, incidentally.

@PhiNotPi are you attached to the box it's running on

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

trichoplaxMean bits Given N >= 1, output the mean number of bits in an integer from 0 to N-1 The output should be accurate to at least 8 significant figures. Sandbox questions I posted this as a mini-challenge in chat. Would it also work as a real challenge on main?

Meanbits? :/
3

@Geobits Are you upset you didn't take the name first? :P
But seriously, I'm very open to suggestions

Nah, I'll stick with Geobits and let people figure it out for themselves ;)

Mean bits was just the literal description of the challenge
@Geobits Much more satisfying

7:52 PM
@Poke Anyways, the KOTH server was built with the idea of having a place to run controllers/entrants without having to worry to much about requiring the challenge author to perform runs himself, and also giving the programs a place to do their thing without messing other stuff up. If somebody puts malicious code on the server (which is certainly possible), my response would be to delete the entire server/database and remake the site (which I can probably do in 15 minutes if I tried).

@trichoplax Yea, it's really not a bad name or anything.

@flawr That looks like so much fun.

@trichoplax (Tr@⌈Log2@Range@#⌉+1)/#&

@MartinBüttner That's the least readable so far... I may take this to main if there's a good response in the sandbox
@MartinBüttner Is that a ceiling in there? I took that out but I don't know what those symbols mean (or what language you are using :) )

@trichoplax it started out very readable as Mean[#~Max~1&/@IntegerLength[Range@#-1,2]]&

7:55 PM
I basically revived the KOTH server from purgatory (aka idling mode) just to test out the phinotpi.com domain. I probably need to figure out a better use for it, like blog or something.

@trichoplax Mathematica, and yes that's syntactic sugar for Ceiling[...]

@MartinBüttner Ah right - in that case you can cut it down since ceiling is no longer required

@El'endiaStarman Do you know the trackmania games? Feels like those=)

@flawr Oh yes. I have Trackmania Nations Forever and it's definitely tons of fun.

Which data should I use for zyabinVI:/

7:59 PM
@MartinBüttner Unless your use of ceiling is a coincidence and is actually used in calculating the exact figure. I can't quite read it but a second look makes me wonder if you're using max to get around the zero is one bit problem

Speaking of which, what should I do with my phinotpi.com domain?

@PhiNotPi Make a blog and never write anything
TIL: This is actually referred to as "blogging fatigue"

Okay, what do you think about a challenge in converting numbers to words in Slovenian language?
`Given the number (0 <= n <= 99), output Slovenian word representation of that number.
- Digits and numbers from 0 to 11 are specific words (section A)
- From 12 to 19, the numbers are formed from the matching unit digits, adding the word for ten (deset) (SECTION B)
- The tens are formed by adding the suffix "deset" (meaning 10) at the end of the multiplier digit, with the exception of 20 (SECTION C)

@trichoplax I need the ceiling to get the integer length, because log2 gives me an exact result. And yes the Max is to fix the 0.

I get it now :)

8:10 PM
In the golfed version Tr just gives me the sum of a list

@PhiNotPi Use it to host all the JS/HTML, Java (as applet), Flash (as... flash) etc. code you create.

@El'endiaStarman I should digg this thing up again. I just noticed it was about 10 years ago when I was so addicted to this stuff.
But it doesn't feel like 10 years.
Feeling old...

Ha, indeed...

@PhiNotPi Just a sec. You have a phinotpi.com domain?!?

@PhiNotPi your domain name is not golfed enough
my domain name is orlp.me

8:12 PM
@orlp -1 not or.lp

@flawr Click the "TrackMania 1 Demo" button here.

@orlp That sound weirdly sexual. "orlp me" ...

@drobilc Publish it in the Saaaaandbox!
@orlp phntp.io? No thanks. :P

@flawr There are still about 6 Million players in TM(U/N)F. I don't particularly like TM² though.

@zyabin101 pnp.io

8:14 PM
Does this look well defined now?

@orlp pnp.io is way too ambiguous.

@orlp That sounds fun.

@El'endiaStarman Is it still the case that you have to wait one out of every few games or so, since they switched to *forever?

@zyabin101 I would, but my English is not that good :/

@flawr Yeah, it's something like 1 out of every 5 games. For online play, that is.

8:19 PM
:29848481 Maybe in 5 years then :)

@El'endiaStarman Downloading
@mınxomaτ Do you play TM too?

Yep

@flawr While that's going, prepare to relive your childhood. :P

I bought TMUF after TMNF went freezone when Nadeo went bankrupt. I still have the first ever TM, too :D
Oh, and TMSX

@mınxomaτ Which was the first one?

8:31 PM
Mini-challenge: Write two programs A and B in the same language that both take one positive int N. A must print N in decimal if N is composite, else print nothing (a newline is ok) if N is prime. B must print N in unary (string of only 0's) if N is prime, else print nothing if N is composite. The Levenshtein distance distance between A and B must be 1. Score = len(A) + len(b). Lower score is better.

@mınxomaτ TMSX?

@flawr Just "TrackMania"

Oooh!
The one where you had the wooden tracks, right???

TMSX was a mutant child of TMUF, with usermods built-in (actually a neat feature).
@flawr The original already had multiple environments.
They released new free DLCs every few months until TMNF was released.

@mınxomaτ Yeah I remember=)
I also bought TMsunrise once=) But what is TMSX written out?

8:33 PM
Sunrise eXtreme

OOhh now I see, sure!

@HelkaHomba "Mini"? o.O

@wizzwizz4 tada! blog.phinotpi.com

@mınxomaτ @El'endiaStarman up for a game in TMUF?

@El'endiaStarman Ok, ok. Mini-ish. I may post something similar for real.

8:36 PM
@flawr Not right now, actually. Fiancée's little brother wants to play basketball.

@flawr I'm basically always at Destyno Fullspeed. Dunno if you can see this from the freezone.
My handle is "minxtech"

@PhiNotPi "Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start writing!"

@El'endiaStarman Ok that is important too=)
@mınxomaτ How can I find that server? I somhow can only sort through countries/regions.

2 hours to Overwatch release :(

@flawr List all -> first or second page. It's a fairly popular server.
But I'm not there today (or this week for that matter).

8:41 PM
@mınxomaτ Oh right, found it!

@Bálint You got a problem with that?

@mınxomaτ Well I'll probably have to warm uf for a while anyway=)

@quartata They literally release it at midnight GMT?

Yeah.

@PhiNotPi Instructions are there, to follow them, without instructions, there wouldn't be so many good things on the planet, like ikea

8:43 PM
@flawr Whats your handle anyway?

I prefer not to say here, but I added you in the game=)

I wasn't suggesting that was the start of usage - that's just the earliest occurrence I could find of pointing out the double meaning

Right right. I was just going further :P

No that's fine - yours answers orlp and mine answers ev3commander...

@mınxomaτ The game is still addicting.

I've been reading some blogs about Helper classes, saying that they are bad design
I'm curious what you guys think

@flawr which gameg

@orlp TrackmaniaNationsForver

@flawr BTW you can work around the freezone timeout by just pressing the AFK button a few seconds before a map ends.

so.....
who's playing overwatch in a bit?

I don't like the multiplayer TM much
I do like the single player courses quite a bit
as well as making my own courses

@mınxomaτ Where is this button?

Wow. I didn't expect this string to be compressed by much since there isn't much of a pattern to it, but zopfli actually increased the size of this: 1234567890&1;qwertyuiop&2;asdfghjkl&3;zxcvbnm&4. I think that's a first

@flawr Somewhere on the HUD. Or use the console.

I should really get around to adding LZString to Cinnamon Gum

@mınxomaτ Oh yeah, is there some way to disable the HUD?
Thank you for the hint anyway=)

Cinnamon Gum is so hit and miss on golfiness. Kinda bothers me.

9:46 PM
@flawr I never tried.

hey there

Random survey of the day: which of these muscles can you voluntarily control? (edit: if none apply to you, vote here)

...Are the second and third different? When I pop my ears I can just like hold it and dampen sounds too

I can dampen sounds but I can't pop my ears

9:59 PM
The tensor tympani actively makes a rumbling noise caused by muscle fibers inside your middle ear.
Popping your ears affects hearing, but because of altering how sound is conducted through your head (typically makes your voice louder).

I'm only level 18 in Heroes of the Storm, but I have a 66% winrate up until now

@PhiNotPi The second and third options are irrelevant to me. :P But I can do the first!

I think it's interesting that so many people have responded (it's typically reported that only a small fraction of people can control any of those muscles).
But, I guess those reports are probably inaccurate.

...I can definitely do all three
New study finds link between computer science and ability to wiggle ears
8

I wonder which of those abilities are "learnable."
I can't wiggle my ears, which is probably strange considering it's probably the "easiest" of the three.
The tensor tympani probably isn't learnable at all.

10:12 PM
@PhiNotPi I did learn it. Altough only with one ear, as I do not have to corresponding muscle on the other ear anymore.

@flawr plz teach me senpai

@PhiNotPi I'm not really sure what counts. I can only move my ears back and for within their own plane. I once knew someone who could flap them (fold them forwards) which I assume uses different muscles.

@Maltysen Just try to tension/move all muscles on your head, chances are you are probably wiggling your ears with the rest. Then try to isolate different movements. Usually this goes by imagining some movement/contraction where you do not actually have muscles. (Like when you think of moving your fingers, you do not actually tension muscles in your fingers, but in your forearms.)

Glasses taught me how to wiggle my ears. I would constantly push my glasses up my nose with my finger. After a while, my ears began to help involuntarily by moving backwards, which pulled my glasses up my nose.

Also worked with nosewings=)

10:20 PM
@trichoplax I think there's several muscles involved.
I have to leave now... bye!

I've seen lots of people move their ears back and for, but only one who could flap them
