@hichris123 it took them this long to realize that was a good idea?

Looks like you'll have to install a bash binary from the Windows store... and then it just works?
> After turning on Developer Mode in Windows Settings and adding the Feature, run you bash and are prompted to get Ubuntu on Windows from Canonical via the Windows Store

I tuned out at "the Windows store"

12:17 AM
I hear it's an actual Linux subsystem. Not sure how that's different from the POSIX subsystem the kernel already has.

@JeffreyBosboom That's what it looks like... they claim it's not a VM so I'm not sure how it would work.
> To accomplish this, we built new infrastructure within Windows – the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) – upon which we run a genuine Ubuntu user-mode image provided by our great partners over at Canonical, creators of Ubuntu Linux.

Why would Canonical do that?

Microsoft probably gave them money to help build this.

oh right, they're a for-profit outfit
> Revenue US$65.7 million (2013)
whoa

Looks like there won't be any .exe -> bash interplay though.

Ah, that's good to know. I wasn't entirely clear on what exactly the bot does, and with this information it makes sense that we won't make much use of it. That being said, we do get a lot of moderately-low-quality posts that fit certain patterns and could be caught by automated filters. Perhaps we could make use of the technology behind SmokeDetector to catch these, just using different criteria. That's a separate issue, though. — David Z ♦ 17 hours ago

"can't comment"
Also, answers that mention the names of other posters on that Q&A are often attempts to reply, not citations or "thanks to @foo for help debugging". Though I don't know how API-expensive it is to get that information.
Actually, even without setting up SD, I could get (a slice of) the data dump and query against it. Someone might already have a recentish one locally.

@JeffreyBosboom Just a question - is your icon a plain white square or does it just get blocked by my browser for some reason?

@ByteCommander It's a plain white square. Used to be a Gravatar, but I block Gravatar, and I was annoyed I didn't show up in the user list in the right sidebar.

Aha. :)

It would be a transparent square, but last time I tried that Imgur crushes it to black. (There's an MSE bug report on this.)
That other users' Gravatar images are blocked is slightly annoying; if I ever learn how to write userscripts, I'll write one to replace them with the first letter of their username. (Blocking is intended, collapsing into 0-pixel wide unclickable regions is annoying.)

I had that problem with Facebook icons... I just disabled blocking them in my Disconnect Firefox addon.

7:31 AM
@Magisch ?

Tuna proposed that we do less Smokey-stuff in the SOCVR
because people percieve it as if the room has too much power by wielding the death laser (smokey)

The largest difference here compared to the SOCVR is that we prefer to keep all the smokedetector messages here, for the site moderators to quickly find and nuke users

@Shog9 Do you have an opinion on smokey here? On the one hand I see the value, on the other hand it's getting out of hand at times.
Read up from there.
Basically the discussion was whether we should get rid of Smokey in the Tavern for quite some time.

I eventually proposed the escalation scheme we have now, which hichris123 implemented.

You should be able to subset the range after marking it. It's a strange omission, given the linked reply system (effectively quasi-threads).
