12:00 AM
I think he may have deleted his tweets, cause I could swear he was hitting up some local radio personalities for charity events he was going to be at.

that's awesome

Yeah, he used to do the mall-Santa thing for a few years, but I guess that was kinda a crap gig.
He's retired so, it wasn't like for a paycheck... Guess the malls were just dicks to all the seasonal help.

@TylerShads never went anywhere near it - bought a bike and move on :)

@jscott that doesn't surprise me

Who here can change the room's message?

12:08 AM
A SUPERprecious snowflake is needed.

I don't think anyone in here atm

@WesleyDavid One of the room owners, or a mod[?].

you'd need @@zoredache, @@sysadmin1138, @@Warner, or @@MarcGravell
I'm sitting here, wondering why my food tastes like shit, I open it up and discover they put blu chese on it

blue cheese is good in the right context

Bite your tongue. Bleu cheese is delish.

12:12 AM
you can have it then

@TylerShads this is fab ihavenet.com/recipes/…

I like how all three of you spelled it differently

Goronzola is also fantastic, especially stuffed in some olives

sounds it, actually

@Holocryptic I may have typo'd. Not sure how it's really spelt.

12:14 AM
@jscott I <3 Goronzola

@Holocryptic I think we can all agree, that no matter how it is spelled...its nasty

@TylerShads Not a fan of buffalo wings then?

@TylerShads maybe. I'd have to try it again to remember

@jscott ?

@Iain Chicken wings

12:21 AM
@TylerShads where all is a subset of everyone

delicious chicken wings

Although, blue cheese with wings really means "salad dressing".

@jscott changing the subject entirely - what have you got brewing?

@Iain A vanilla stout and another blueberry ale

:( beer should taste of hops

12:25 AM
I've just moved the stout in to secondary. Give it another couple weeks then bottle age.
@Iain I've been urged to make both of these. Also I'm working to finish my keezer before the year's end.

@jscott ginger beer was popular with the local breweries this year, one won some awards for theirs but e didn't like it at all

I love blueberry ale, especially in the summer. I've just not brewed one that I much cared for -- yet.
But I'm having a DogFish Head 90 minute IPA right now, my pick of the year... Great stuff.

@jscott I've tried a blueberry beer onece and it wasn't nice

The 90min definitely tastes of hops, some may say too much.
@Iain It's tough, "flavored" beers are quite polarizing.
Also the Sierra Nevada Celebration is great for hop-heads.

Jaipur IPA or Viking Gold (from peerless) are my favourites and there is no such thing as too much hop !
@jscott indeed, our nephew really likes his beers and especially the dark ones but he has a soft spot for the oddly flavoured stuff too - cherry and chocolate etc

12:34 AM
I've not found a cherry + beer I can agree with, but I keep trying. There's a number of chocolate beers I'm OK with, although I don't care for candy/sweets.

@jscott Wetherspoons ( a national pub chain) have a twice yearly beer festival. Last spring they had an American beer called Cherry Bomb which was horrid

@Iain I'll be trying the Jaipur IPA, asap, looks like my local brew shop stocks it.

I <3 Jaipur
it's better out of a hand pump than a bottle but the bottles are good too

12:51 AM
Nice to see so many new members answering questions on the site.

@WesleyDavid Yeah, it does seem like it's picked up recently. Um.. school breaks maybe??

@ShaneMadden shrug Mebee. Some of the new users I looked at seemed like they were full grown. Unless it's work vacation for them and they're now bored out of their minds at home and still want to think computery thoughts.
This fellow for instance: serverfault.com/users/103539/sig-io

Ahh yeah, that might be it. Whatever the reason, I hope it keeps up!

1:06 AM
'sup you santa hat wearing freak

@MDMarra Which one?

all of you
My gravitar modification blends in

Ah, the tree-tment,

You could say it's ... incogTREEto.

Much better than I did.

1:08 AM
:D

@MDMarra Santa hat or GTFO

@WesleyDavid I know I have a Satan hat around here somewhere...

@WesleyDavid I have a fucking tree for a face. Give a brotha a break.

Uncropped because I'm fundamentally lazy.

Yo, @MikeyB, I'm happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Tim Curry's devil hat was the best devil hat of all time. OF ALL TIME!!!

1:19 AM
Who was it earlier talking about needing a canonical question about DDOS?
We just got another one
0
Q: Surviving a DDoS

devnillLast night a site on my server was attacked. It appears that someone hacked the DNS record of a russian porn sites file server and changed the CNAME to my sites URL. I changed my .htaccess to 403 the pages that are coming from the porn site but it made no difference. Is there a way I can filter t...

Is it that hard to search for four letters on a major technical Q/A site?

Well, that was quick. Self-deleted

poof. Gone

Baha it was the same guy that asked this earlier
1
Q: Apache getting DDoS

devnillMy apache server is currently getting DDoSed. It looks like all the traffic is referrals from the file server of a russian file sharing site. How can I block only the traffic which is coming from the compromised site?

Except it changed from "file sharing site" to "porn site"

I wonder how many DDoS questions are actually DDos, versus just a significant bump in traffic.

1:23 AM
I can't imagine that there's that many people in the world who upset someone enough to attract the attention of a major ddos

"HALP! pr0n site magical DDoSing meh!"

@MarkHenderson I wonder if it's even about being upset. I wonder if people get their sites fuzzed to see what kind of goodies drops out. I wonder if it's more about exploration than anger.
Does @quanta come in here much?
I think I used to see him.

@MDMarra Quick, link 50 ads on your index.php and get paid.

If someone redirected a porn site at my site I'd be pumped. Free ad impressions!
Haha, great minds.

1:26 AM
Hmm, I see badp is still lurking

@voretaq7 Seriously dude, put a Santa hat on you melon poking Nazi turkey farmer. serverfault.com/users/32986/voretaq7
@MarkHenderson Yeah, I don't get it.

@MarkHenderson They're in almost 2 dozen rooms. Must be mostly lurking everywhere.

Here's one I prepared earlier

Ooo, cool! New user who's owning the rep leaderboards: serverfault.com/users/90723/driftpeasant

1:30 AM
@jscott Then nobody poke him and wake him up :p
Gee they've got a huge flag weight too

Does flag weight drop? I thought mine was up in teh 600s for a while. I avoided SF for a month or two and now it's in the low 400s
At least, that's my recollection of things.

@WesleyDavid I don't know, I know it drops for rejected flags, and the algorithm was changed once that caused a drop for people, but it shouldn't drop of its own accord
When were you away?

Honestly, I was half-expecting @vortaq7 to show up with an OG Grinch theme

@MarkHenderson I didn't do anything on the site from late October to last week

Not that I think he's always a mean dude. :)

1:33 AM
Here's another user who's only 18 days old but doing really well for himself: serverfault.com/users/102770/paul-ackerman

@jscott I love the cat in the hat. When I read it to my son before bed time he ends up getting all razzed up and excited because I get so excited with all the ryhming words

Only trouble: his bio is in third person. Instant douchenozzle.

@WesleyDavid Hmm, no idea then, the algorithm change aaaaaaages ago, before october
@WesleyDavid Sounds like he grabbed the bio from a book

@MarkHenderson Looking forward to those moments. Amassing Dr. Seuss books as we speak.
@WesleyDavid Or, perhaps, he's not had a refill on his meds.

Warms my cold heart to see TomTom still active.

1:37 AM
@WesleyDavid He's a bit misinformed from time to time

'nother noob doing good for himself: serverfault.com/users/86472/cyberx86

Throw enough darts at the wall, some will stick :)

@WesleyDavid I wasn't sure what to think of SF, when I first arrived, because his rep was so high.

@MDMarra So in other words he and I are twins?

Q: Open Source (Free) alternative to EZProxy

AliAre there any open source/free alternatives to EZProxy? For those who are not familiar with EZProxy, it's a proxy server that allows users to access institutional subscriptions (like journal subscriptions) that work based on your IP range, like if your university library is subscribed to an on...

His comment there, for example

1:38 AM
@WesleyDavid TomTom has good answers and good advice - but we came to the conculstion that he must often drink before heading onto the intertubes to dispense advice

@MarkHenderson Being a SysAdmin is enough of an intoxicant to cause semi random violent attacks, slurred speech and perma-CAPS posting.

@WesleyDavid True. I swore at someone on Super User today. The comments have since been cleaned up (at my request), but sometimes the LART sits around un-used for too long

@MarkHenderson I once had a notion to get 10K'd on SuperUser just so I could have some weight to fling around. Once the drugs wore off and I regained use of my frontal lobe I discarded that idea.

@WesleyDavid I attempted to get into the site, but it just reminded me too much of the days spent doing help desk support

Not only was this question a clusterfuck, I find it funny how the top voted answers are from newcomers who likely have no idea how longtimers wish they could get A's upvoted that many times: serverfault.com/questions/327738/…

1:43 AM
THe number of times I had to describe where the fucking start menu was
And that your computer brand is not "viewsonic"

I wonder who spread the link to that one around - so many views.

And yes, I know I didn't sell you a start menu, it comes with Windows

@MarkHenderson Of course that's not my computer brand. Mine says Hanns-G clear as day, silly.
See? I can do you computer guys' jobs easy.

@WesleyDavid Us mods have asked for the ability to view referral and visit stats for specific questions, but I don't know if the stats that detailed exist for easy consumption

@MarkHenderson Nothing a little "Occupy StackExchange" movement couldn't help push along.

1:45 AM
@WesleyDavid Ohh, Hanns-G, why didn't you say so. Ok, do me a favour, go to Start > Run > and type shutdown /s - if the computer turns off, your computer is incompatible with our software. Sorry.
2

@WesleyDavid I think SE did it.
RT @ServerFault: How dangerous is a wet server room floor http://serverfault.com/questions/327738/how-dangerous-is-a-wet-server-room-floor #serverroom

I hate trying to describe what the windows key is

@Holocryptic On most english keyboads, its between the left control and alt key, so I just stick to that

@jscott Meh, I've got as many followers as SE - I bet they didn't get much more than 100 clicks off of that link.

And it's incredibly useful when people can't locate the start button with their mouse

1:48 AM
I suspect it may have hit some other site like perhaps Reddit.

@Holocryptic You mean the ⌘ key?

@MarkHenderson hrm, I'll have to use that description. But yeah, it's easier to try and walk them through the shortcuts then to navigate the start menu
@jscott quiet, you unicode freak

@MarkHenderson crtl + esc

ǝpoɔıu∩ ǝɥʇ ssıp ʇ,uo◖

In other news, I've just finished the main quest line in Skyrim.

1:50 AM
@RobMoir I've been training my toddler to respond to the word "Stop" with "Hammer Time". In retrospect, it was probably a pretty poor idea with regard to safety. Oh well.

[kbd]blah[/kbd]
WTF

@ScottPack LOL!

FUCKING MARKDOWN

@jscott Uh, that involves pressing two keys simultaniously, too difficult

Dude! We are so totally on the same page.

1:50 AM
@ScottPack This. I must do this.

I wanted to also do "Collaborate and Listen" but it turned out to be a bit too complicated.

I just need my son to be able to say two words together

Speaking of SU - apparently telling them "yes, we migrated that away because it doesn't belong on SF" is controversial..

Q: Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V: 'hypervisor' driver not installed

Nathan DeWittI have a dual-boot system, Windows 7 on my C: drive and Server 2008 R2 on my K: drive. Two separate hard drives. I set up Hyper-V and everything was running great, building VMs left and right and loving life. My Win7 drive became corrupt and i blew it away and reinstalled windows 7. In my Ser...

Cowaboiwate n wisten
@ShaneMadden Dont fucking get me started ont hat fucking question

@ScottPack I did the same because it was cute, then thought "hmm... that may be dangerous." Turns out, she can tell the difference between a cute "Stop" "Hammer Time!" and "STOP!!!".

1:51 AM
@ScottPack I think you're my new hero/parenting mentor

@MarkHenderson The collaborate wasn't even quite that recognizable.

@MarkHenderson Ha! Well, the diamond said "no more comments, focus on solving the problem" - and locked it so no answers can come in.

@ShaneMadden Wow...

@ShaneMadden So it's locked and protected. What the fuck got deleted off that thing?

@ScottPack You don't want to know

1:53 AM
@Holocryptic The 18k who protected it was repeatedly saying "It says Hyper-V and 2008R2! SEND IT BACK!"

Some guy called Tom Wzuiwsusideuheourhweoiruwer got into a huge hissy fit with his girlie panties refused to accept that it was off topic for SF
And then insisted on seeing an exact meta-thread with a community discussion abotu that exact question stating that we didn't want it

@MarkHenderson Of course it's off-topic. Those are both Windows products. Everyone knows that shit don't belong in professional IT!

I gave him four meta threads talking about what is on/off topic, pointed him to specific parts of these threads that said "If a sysadmin wouldn't do it, then it doesn't belong"
2
(and no sysadmin would dual-boot a freaking hypervisor)

goddamn right

But that wasn't good enough for him

1:55 AM
Oh, and @MDMarra. I hate you for your gravatar. You are a bad person for forcing me to stare at your crotch so often.

He's got 136 rep on SF, clearly he knows better.

Aaanyyway I then said a lot of curse words
3
And then flagged my own posts for mod attention so that someone woudl come by and clean it up
What I didn't realise that they would do would be to lock it in a room and throw away the key, but insist people still answer it
2

Hahaha, awesome. I missed a lot of the fun there, I guess.

@ShaneMadden There was one other SF'er involved, but I forget who, they took our side in the beginning, but I didn't see them after that

I remember discussing that question, but I don't remember if it was in here or somewhere else

1:57 AM
So. @Mark. I think you need to go outside, throw a few on the barbie, and relax a bit. Look at what happened the last time someone threw a hissy fit at a mod.

@ShaneMadden - what drew you to that question to bring it up in here anyway? Have they been talking about it?

@ScottPack shit got real

@MarkHenderson I think it got linked earlier, let me check..

@ScottPack Its all good, weather is shit here today anyway. I was writing that at about 6am, since then I took my kid to church where he ran around like a nutter which was fun, so I'm happy now

@MarkHenderson Oh that's right! You're in the future.
2

1:59 AM
@ScottPack Damn straight
Anyway Im gunna go see what's for lunch
Cya all later

cheers

G'day

2:14 AM
@scottpacks welcome
My crotch is magical

2:25 AM
Everytime I log into ServerFault and my rep hasn't increased, a large part of me dies.

Stop logging in.

I'd hoped to make 10k in 200 answers, but that's never gonna happen.

I've somehow managed to render my Vista machine unbootable - and all without doing anything to it.

Vista?! Unbootable?! You don't say....

2:35 AM
Wow Microsoft makes it impossible to find info about buying VLKs

@Jacob Call them. srs

@jscott I only need 6-7 computers upgraded from XP-> 7. are they even going talk to me?

@Jacob That's because it's the responsibility of their VARs to talk to you about it.

@jscott Just make your next 16 answers obvious and snarky.

@Jacob They probably will if you call their licensing department, however that'll do you no good. You want to talk with your VAR of choice. They have licensing smarts and will guide you just fine.

2:37 AM
Alright, got an decent idea of what they might want price wise? I'm writing a proposal.

@Jacob We pay per FTE, for "workstation" licenses. Not much.

@Jacob Here;s the MVLS number. I've called them and asked them questions about appropriate use and to straighten out some purchase snafus: (866) 230-0560
Oh, prices? No. MSFT will never tell you prices for VLKs because they don't sell VLKs. They sell to distributors who sell to resellers who sell to you.
Expect about $200 per license for a Windows 7 Professional VLK

@WesleyDavid I could do better than that in retail.

If I recall, there's no upgrade price for XP Pro to 7. You just buy 7 outright.

@WesleyDavid still cheaper in retail as I recall?

2:42 AM
@Jacob If you want to go system builder, perhaps. Just remember that it's not properly licensed if you don't install the system builder copy of Windows through the Windows OPK tool.
@Jacob XP to 7 isn't upgrade eligible from my recollection. So your only hope of getting Professional at a cheaper rate is OEM/system builder

@WesleyDavid True, it'd be alot easy if this stuff wasn't so expensive. Small businesses don't have exploding pockets :(

@Jacob Just call a VAR up and ask for a quote.
I'll IM you my MicroAge guy
And, and should this question get nuked? serverfault.com/questions/342030/…

@WesleyDavid yes

anybody here played with a netapp simulator?
ohh hey everyone :)

@rabbid Yo yo. And no, I've never played with one. Didn't even know such a thing existed... Googling... =)

2:52 AM
yes there is
apparently it can only be installed on suse or red hat
red hat* mehehehe pun not intended

@rabbid Yes, we have a thing for red hats here...
So let me guess, you don't have a SUSE or RH system?

i just dont have the iso handy
we use both in our datacentre
ter*
i have ubuntu server iso handy
i gues ill just try in my hpervisor
hypervisor* gawd cant type

1 hour later…
4:12 AM
@rabbid Yeah
@rabbid It works just fine on Debian. I keep a minimal debian install around with the Netapp simulator just for this purpose.

4:31 AM
Wow, what a difference a cable makes. I had to use a VGA cable for my new monitor until I got a DVI today. Amazing the quality now.
Well, DVI cable going into a DVI-to-HDMI adapter.

4:50 AM
Time for some TF2, methinks

5:13 AM
@WesleyDavid I'll join you :p

Q: How do I deploy a MS SQL Express 2005 database?

JFBGood evening, how could I deploy my ASP.NET MVC3 web application on my host's ftp? @MikeyB ....... brilliant.

@MarkHenderson (or anyone) in that situation, flagging it is correct, and then you should ping a Community Team member in the mod room so that the revisions can be adjusted. ie, note what serverfault.com/posts/342054/revisions looks like now...

It's probably too much to hope for: serverfault.com/a/341953/6177

@ShaneMadden Naw man. You want brilliant? google.com/…

(and then y'all can deal with undeleting if so desired after the revisions are fixed up)

7:42 AM
@Ward LOL - you should probably just @ him in chat (say his name 3 times) rather than putting that on the main site

I thought with TomTom it might be more likely to work on one of his answers.

8:39 AM
@MarkHenderson @ShaneMadden - that question, in hindsight, perhaps could have been closed rather than migrated. As for "It sez hyperV and W2008 R2 send it back", that's just crazy talk. What if the question was "I'm running W2008R2 as my desktop at home and want to run Grand Theft Auto III in a hyperV'd XP session, what graphics card drivers should I install..."? (It might still be a lousy SU question but its certainly not suddenly a SF question because hyperV and W2008r2 are involved.

@RebeccaChernoff You can do that? I emailed Jeff about that about 6 months ago and he said the only revision you can't remove is the initial one

I got that changed. How often do you want to remove a revision that isn't the first vs the first one? Seemed ridiculous to me. (:

@RebeccaChernoff Cool :)

its not the first time and it won't be the last that people include too much info in the first draft of a question

8:42 AM
@RobMoir Perhaps, but in a comment that got deleted, I did state that I was sending it to SU in the hope that someone with dual-booting experience could help, and that if SU didn't want it, no hard feelings, please close (well, to that extent anyway)

@MarkHenderson oh yes. I think SF/you acted in good faith there because its on the edge. I simply mean that if they felt it was OT there too it could have been closed with no drama

@MikeyB You've gotta be kidding me...
@RobMoir Drama is our middle name lately...

What the devil's going on this time!?

quite :-|
hey @TomOConnor

Morning!

8:44 AM
Evening!

heh

At the third beep, the time will be... seven... forty... four... pm... beep, beep, beep

I just clicked mikeyb's google link myself and now I'm a little scared. I'd say "people really do that...?" but clearly, they do.

I wonder how much work it is to make sure that those time announcements were actually accurate, given that it's a bit of a circular situation

@RobMoir I found a thing on there for an (expired) SSL certificate

8:46 AM
quite a bit, considering how long they've had speaking clock services I can only imagine some kind of fantastic heath-robinson machine to do it

@RobMoir you should come see the old GPO one at the London Science Museum.

pastebin is darn useful but still... stuff like that...

Or they have a guy that's just really really good at keeping his voice neutral and at estimating at what time he's going to finish speaking. And never sleeps.

It's good, tom?
I should persuade my nephew and niece that they want to go to the science museum with their uncle one day!

It looks like an optical record deck.
@RobMoir Everyone should go at least once.

8:48 AM
that's incredible
I agree tom. I've been before as a kid

I go to their Adults Lates evenings. Whole museum, opened for adults only last weds of each month.

actually been to the tate modern a few times... you can get to it on a straight train run from where I am, no tube needed

Hah they had an active/passive distributed cluster of those machines

that's a good idea

See if they can do it in 1937 why can't we do it now?

8:50 AM
Mark - clustering in 1937. I guess that just goes to show that IT has been about recycling old ideas with new paint since before it was even called IT

I wonder if they needed low-latency shared-storage between the multiple nodes to ensure that they had acid-compliant data

redundant arrays of inexpensive valves?

I can imagine it now. (puts on a pompous british accent) "Ah yes good sir at international business machines, I am enquiring about your storage area network array, but only the latest model please, the 1937 model. Or a prototype of the 1938 model"
2
"Yes, two words of storage will be enough, but I need latency of under 15 seconds per IO please"
2

heh.. that's probably pretty much how it went down, too
and don't forget "I'm wearing a top hat so your arguments about spec are irrelevant".

"Oh, you charge extra for the MPIO feature? Oh, and it's extra for a standby controller? Oh I see, and it's extra for the clustering... and extra for the WAN plugin... and extra for replication... I see..."
"So exactly what do I get for the list price?"

8:55 AM
@MarkHenderson Ah, we want two units? Yes, I see that we need two warehouses for them.

I can see you're not bitter about dealing with SAN vendors at all ;-)

@RobMoir You got snow where you are?

@RobMoir Actually I stay out of purchasing, I just tell them what I want and someone else signs a cheque

not right now... decent dusting the other day though

Thankfully nobody second guesses me much

8:56 AM
not sure if I've got a good or a bad deal. I handle all the price negotiation but then someone else signs the check

I'm fortunate that our account manager at Dell used to be an employee of another company I used to work at, so he put me on the top pricing tier before I'd even made a single purchase

oh its definitely frosty out here

It's never what you know, it's who you know
(which means we got a $70,000 blade for about $36,000)

very true mark...

8:59 AM
I only ever got one job on my merits, every other job I've had since then has been a reference from someone

These last couple of weeks i've been doing negotiations with dell and hp for blades.

In fact, when I resigned from that first job, my employer actually submitted my CV to another company on my behalf, where I've now been working for 5 years

hp consistently came in over budget
