Anyone still around?

6 hours later…
8:19 AM
G'day

Dan
8:32 AM
Morning
It appears to be Monday again :(

Morning all :)
@Dan I took two days off :)

Dan
@BartDeVos :D Looking forward to the Christmas break. Didn't help that my burglar alarm went off at 2:30am last night

@BartSilverstrim woah. Paranoid, much?
@Dan you have no santa hat. I am dissapoint.

Dan
@tombull89 I wasn't aware of the theme until this morning - though I did enjoy looking at the users online thing up there

haha, all but one has a hat (hint ;))

8:38 AM
A reminder of the new rule is needed: No hat, no Chat.
5
And you should post your hat-modded gravatar image to: meta.serverfault.com/questions/2394/its-santa-time

@Ward Already have (just)

@BartDeVos I like Kenny's picture - the hat goes well with his suit.

@Ward true :)

Dan
8:52 AM
I have changed my gravatar, but looks like I have to wait

I want to put hats on my fingers' head or whatever it's called =\, how?

Dan
Yay

@Gigili grab a hat picture from this meta thread, use your favourite image program to do so (Paint, Fireworks, Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.Net, etc)
also, cute.
@Dan yay!

@tombull89 Aha, fantastic. Will be back with hat to chat.

Dan
I do like Gravatar - I wish more places used it

9:14 AM
@Dan It's nice, although I wish I had the option to store images somewhere else as gravatar means you've got to sign up for "another" service.

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, that's true

@RebeccaChernoff, re:
yesterday, by Rebecca Chernoff
@MarkHenderson (or anyone) in that situation, flagging it is correct, and then you should ping a Community Team member in the mod room so that the revisions can be adjusted. ie, note what http://serverfault.com/posts/342054/revisions looks like now...
is this a mod-only room? just that I'm not sure if someone should have posted this info publically on this answer.

9:28 AM
@tombull89 It's a public key, not much harm done :)
Anybody here a fan of dexter?
Just saw the last ep of the season.
f me. Those 30 last seconds...

9:44 AM
Morning everyone!
Lake of Fire?
Guys, can anyone help me with a small problem? Is there a good article, that would explain to me how could I change correctly file/directory permissions under ubuntu?

@BartDeVos shut up shut up shut up shut up

@MarkHenderson OK :)

I have to wait until Wednesday before I can watch it because that's the first time my wife and I are both free on the same night

@Eugene That's kind of broad. Just post a question on the main site. People will get round to help you :)

@Eugene Depends on what you're trying to do. I strongly suggest you ask a question on the main site
This isn't a help chat, but if you ask a question on the main site you should at the very least get some pointers to similar questions, or perhaps even a direct answer

Q: How do I find Waldo with Mathematica?

Arnoud BuzingThis was bugging me over the weekend: What is a good way to solve those Where's Waldo? ['Wally' outside of North America] puzzles, using Mathematica (image-processing and other functionality). Here is what I have so far, a function which reduces the visual complexity a little bit by dimming s...

Funny question on SO :)

greetings snowflakes

Dan
I flagged this as off topic, and though it got marked as helpful it hasn't been moved:

http://serverfault.com/questions/341140/volume-mixer-stops-responding-after-wake-up-of-windows7

It's getting no love here, though, either way

@Dan - voted.

Dan
@SpacemanSpiff Thanks, though I was mostly posting for opinions. It's not even a bad question, just in the wrong place IMHO

right, voted to move to superuser

Dan
10:09 AM
:)

but then also pointed out via comment, to just stop hibernating or sleeping the machine entirely
probably going to be a mainboard/firmware/driver issue but seriously i weigh things down to effort these days, if I can just leave it on and move onto something important, WIN.

does one lose the earned rep if a question you've asked or answered gets closed?

nice santa hat
and I do not know

@Sathya From that I get the impression that The Comms Room is a shouty sweary 4-chan... okay, a more shouty sweary 4chan.

10:20 AM
@pauska: I don't think so

Anyone who cannot appreciate the boobalicious banter should probably just get out.

if it gets migrated, the rep moves over, but i get a few high rep closed questions on SU

@MarkHenderson You around?

@BartDeVos Im' sorry. I think I explained mysefl incorrectly.
I was asking about what might be the reason, why changing permissions might not be permited for me. I'm trying to do chmod a+w ./ and I receive chmod: changing permissions of './': Operation not permitted

10:45 AM
Okey. Found out the reason.

Dan
British Peeps: B&Q are doing 75% off all Christmas decorations. A bargain for any last minute stuff or getting ready for next year!
Just ordered a £90 Christmas tree for £22.50

@Dan We got one after Christmas last year for $10 instead of $130

Dan
@Ward Yeah, that was my plan too. We do have one this year, but it's on its last legs. They're going quick, so I ordered 3 and we'll see what we prefer when they arrive :D

@SpacemanSpiff I point you to the second message on the starred list.-------->
I think you should go back to the pic you used to have of Spiff and stick a hat on him.

Dan
@Ward Why would you ever want a space anyway. That's just asking for confusion and complication even if it were supported
Although that fellow does have the following in his profile:

etworking and standardisation specialist, currently focused on DNS and telecoms standards. Author of RFC 5625 and RFC 5966.

Previously Director of Network Operations at a successful business-focussed ISP in the UK.

Well beyond my skill set so I'll watch that one with interest

10:54 AM
@Ward working on it, on a netbook in spain right now :)
He's arguing semantics, just because you can doesn't mean you should

Dan
@SpacemanSpiff I agree, though semantics are fairly important I think

@pauska don't think so

Did someone mention my profile? ;-)

@Alnitak It's impressive, but would be even moreso with a hat on your Horsehead.

ha :)

Q: It's Santa Time!

HolocrypticLet's do this. What with the DramaLlama being out in full force, I think it's time to take a breather and bring the funny back. To wit: I propose the Santification of your gravatars till after the new year. Some of us have already gotten started. You can use the image as your baseline. or ...

seriously, the nomenclature in TomTom's answer is all wrong, and so are his comments

Any man who manages to get a hat on a terrier....

@JourneymanGeek Weren't you already warned? No hat no chat?

I do know this stuff - DNS protocols is what I do all day every day

11:06 AM
XD

@Alnitak I usually leave DNS stuff for your rss feed to catch up

The RSS feed is too slow - don't get time to catch the interesting questions from that.

@Alnitak Impressive

yup
12 hours ago, by Iain
anyone got any preferences for iphone/pad astronomy aps ?

in any event, I never argued that you could (or should) use a space in an AD entry, just that his explanation and terms are incorrect. If anyone's bluff has been called it's his, and he's falling far short (IMHO)

11:13 AM
He is knowledgeable but generally his manner leaves a lot to be desired

mine, or his? ;-)

wow, calling out TomTom? +1.

Dan
Where is TomTom from?

okay gravatar should be changing shortly

@SpacemanSpiff 5 minutes usually :)

11:17 AM
no-one really know. all we do know is he's got a thing for databases...I think @pauska said he's just an electronic manifestation of the sarcasm that lives in all SysAdminin-y types.

@Dan The land of multi-core database-serving smartphones.

Dan

(:
'cmon, we have The Chernoff in the room...

@Dan I think he's German

11:19 AM
@Alnitak Don't take any offense, he's just a weird guy with lots of knowledge and a bit snarky attitude

Dan
@Iain That does explain things

Yeah, I do that sometimes too. But he's wrong! ;-)

@Iain Aaaaaahhhhhhhh! Don't you recall what happened the last time someone was called out as being German?

GAAAAAAAAH TOO LATE
damnit

lolz

11:20 AM
your google-fu beats mine

Dan
@pauska I'm ashamed to admit that this has actually been me several times#

@Alnitak A hat would make your argument much more compelling...

@tombull89: he's the avatar of BOFH?

change damnit change!

@Dan Likewise, I've done this numerous times...
ask @KennyRasschaert

11:21 AM
@SpacemanSpiff Yes, it's done!

"Time for lunch", hold on, someone is wrong..

@JourneymanGeek A hat would make your text much more compelling
@SpacemanSpiff A hat would make your text much more compelling

You should post it as an answer on the meta question.

@pauska: Terriers do not wear hats.

I was on the front page of all time users for a very long time, but got bored of answering questions about why you can't have a CNAME at a zone apex :(

11:22 AM
okay

@SpacemanSpiff I've F5'd - it's all good.

many have tried, many have failed. However, I do note the properly seasonal beard

I thought I heard barking. I suggest everyone ignore it.
Spiff's hat is on!

@JourneymanGeek: Remember that Google is the internets version of Chuck Norris.. you can't beat it

11:22 AM
@pauska: many people died later of fatal ankle bites

okay have to upload it somewhere to be able to link it hold on

@pauska poor thing

Why am I up at 330am? Just to see damn hats on Gravatars?

@Ward I wondering the same thing

Dan
11:28 AM
@Ward Someone is hatless on the internet!

Hopefully we call it a day early on, I need a beer.

@SpacemanSpiff can't you go sightseeing then ?

Q: Server and Network Monitoring

ANBUandyAny recommendations for good quality software that can monitor the network and also server status such as storage space and RAM etc etc...

NC

@pauska I flagged as dupe of serverfault.com/questions/44/…

11:37 AM
that would be a better choice, yes
I can't cancel my vote, so if 3 here would kindly dupe it..

@pauska yay! final vote!

You'll take on Flickr with aplomb. You'll be the next facebook-killing, myspace-tackling, Tumblr-trashing, Social-media monolith this side of the last dot-com boom. "
Fuckyeah.

I've never heard of "PeerIndex", "Klout", "Dreamspace" or "Grindr" before. plus I though bebo was staus:so-last-decade

Someone kick this guy back to the stoneage for me. serverfault.com/questions/224118/internal-server-500-error

The Windows 7 optimisation guide is a treat

@Dan If you're serious about VDI - check these guys out: loginvsi.com
I saw their presentation at tech:ed atlanta, they're very - very good

@pauska stackoverflow.com/a/1732454/167299 Lucky I didn't go Zalgo

There are whitepapers to download if you register, they contain lots of useful tweaking

Q: Adding multiple A records for same host for backup purpose

ManjoorI have a webserver. I got 2 static IP from 2 different ISPs. I want to make sure my webserver is accessible when one ISP's network is down.. for example my host name a.example.com my ISP1 IP : x.134.x.100 my ISP1 IP : x.10.x.10 Current A records in my DNS for example.com. a.example.com x.13...

Dan
@t1nt1n Not too shabby

@t1nt1n Suffering from lack of sleep yet?

God, I love being at a compnay thats in the sticks.
1.14Mbps shared between 40 users.
@Dan say something you didnt want to?

Dan
I try to be a bit careful with what comes back. Nothing that would get me the sack, but I try to maintain confidentiality
(Nothing interesting - I thought you'd have read it :D)

naa was just looking at some PRTG stats. Were hammering our line...

Dan
That'll be the boobies, then

I wish.... We host our website in house and this is the busy time of year for us. So trying to keep everything going smoothly.

Dan
Ah, all good fun

1:29 PM
@t1nt1n Infinity soon, or is that exchange EFM enabled?

its EMF.
I cant wait until March as infinity should be live.
We have a 2mbps SDSL connection and a 8mb ADSL backup but this time of year its not enough. and the SDSL bearer is limited to 2mbps so cant even up that to 10.
Crappy Exchanges.

Dan
Where abouts are you @t1nt1n

Malvern,

Dan
Heh, no way

Worcestershire, Exchange is a pile of W***%.

Dan

@Dan what type of camping....

@KyleBrandt: Meep

1:36 PM
@Dan sorry that was a bit over the line!

Dan

A: installing the autocad 2012 x64 software in win 7 x64

David SchwartzAutocad cannot produce that message. That message is produced by a patcher that is used to activate pirated copies of Autocad. Purchase the program and you won't have this issue.

(if he's right, that is).

Dan
Haha, I don't know but I hope he his

1:49 PM
@tombull89 are you implying that people steal software?

@KennyRasschaert Fine :-) Watching MFL while migrating my BE001-laptop. WW930 was a great success :)

I think he is right. I don't think the licence program that autocad uses is actually helpful enough to tell you when the problem is a permissions issue

@TylerShads Judging by our students, I know people steal software...or in case, some attempt to. Much amusement was had watching a student copy + paste a whole load of program shortcuts to our CS5 collection to his USB stick.

@tombull89 shortcuts are the program, right?
;)

@RobMoir I assume you're talking about the standalone version, not using a license server?

Dan
1:54 PM
@tombull89 Haha, that's almost cute

@scott yes we support the standalone and licence server versions at my college. What fun!

I let him know a) we knew what he was trying to do, b) why what he was doing woudln't work and c) this is CS5. It's expensive, it's massive, and it's not going to fit on a USB stick.

@RobMoir We had a presidentially directed consolidation of services a couple of years ago. We got to take over management of a whole fistful of license servers. Now that's been exciting.

He was probably dissapointed when he got home and his 1kb .lnk files didn't work.

@tombull89 never underestimate portable space

1:56 PM
@tombull89 At least we wrote the win2K-licenses down from the cases :)

I had a student minimise the window when I told him to close a pirated game down.

I told him that the world of discliplinary hurt he was about to experience was more because I was insulted he'd think that would fool an IT manager than for the game itself.
@ScottPack we ended up setting up one dedicated licence server for everything. So far so good

@TylerShads Recent audit shows only one student has removeable storeage of 8GB capacity.

@RobMoir just change the permissions on his work folders so that he can't read any of them

@RobMoir You mean a separate server per application?

@tombull89 soon their parents will buy them 16GB...so that they can lose them en masse in the computer labs

1:58 PM
@ScottPack no i mean one server for the lot. It seems to work but we're prepared to set up another one if there's a clash. Virtualisation makes this cheap enough to do

I found an average of 4 flash drives a semester during my 4 years...only 2 were worth keeping because i found 2 8gb my freshman yr...no identifications on em, just stickin out of the public computers

@RobMoir Oh, yeah, that's pretty much what we ended up doing. In truth, we have a couple of servers, but each one supplies multiple applications.

gotta love idiots

Really it came down to what license server application they used.
