Q: Iterate through Guava Bloom Filter?

VL1994I am using Guava's bloom filter library and I need to iterate through the bloom filter so that I can create sub bloom filters. Does anyone have any experience using this library have an idea how I'd do this? Thanks in advance

@200_success Perhaps the answer to that can be found in the First Post review queue. We may or may not have a couple of auto-reviewers around.

I already checked the review history. It was under 3 minutes old, and hadn't been reviewed yet.

Q: Python Game of Life Search Program for Herschel-Generating Baits (needs Golly to run)

Gustavo6046The following script is a Golly script that searches for positions where one in a list of still lifes can create a Herschel (or another pattern specified in the "herschels" list) when reacting with the pattern already in the board. import golly as g from sys import exit herschels = [] herschels...

Nope.

I wonder what's the time in a galaxy far, far away...

@Gustavo6046 How about context?
You don't explain what Golly is, or a Herschel.

Nowadays people are too lazy to read the ConwayLife Wiki.

Wasn't Herschel the guy that discovered a planet?

1:42 AM
@Gustavo6046 You post a question. You provide the information.

Well Herschel is also the name of a pattern named after him.

@Gustavo6046 People are reviewing your code. Expecting them to read extra material is pretty lazy.

No information is less chance of a good review.

Anyway.

If you fix the lack of information it could be a good question.
For example, why are you using Golly?
I've seen Game of Life done in vanilla Python.
@Zak did it in Excel.
So you don't need much for it.

1:44 AM
Ok now I edited it :)

Zak
@Gustavo6046 If there's extra information people might need to review your code, the least you could do is provide a link to it. Preferably just include the relevant info in your question.

@Gustavo6046 Better, but it's still lacking.

Ok added links.
And updated code.
Also I chose Golly because it's very extendable. You can even make search scripts like that! :D
No Need to make a complex C++ application with GOL included. You only need to code the actual search, not the entire app + framework :)

@Gustavo6046 C++ is irrelevant, you're using Python.

@Mast I totally disagree.
How is that formulation different from "I want to reduce the code size and use less memory and time"?

Either he wants it short, or efficient in memory, or efficient in time. Don't fix all 3 at once.
@SimonForsberg That's equally bad in my opinion.

@Mast That doesn't make it off-topic
And how is it any different from "Any and all feedback welcome"? (which gives reviewers the possibility to review both code size, memory usage, and runtime performance)
I think you're putting way too much weight into the formulation.

I think people should get their priorities straight and focus on one problem at a time.

@Mast I disagree, I find this question on-topic for Code Review. — Simon Forsberg 52 secs ago

@Hiruluk The probably fastest way to move it is to delete the question here and re-post it on Code Review. — Simon Forsberg 29 secs ago

In fact, according to one of our "magical questions" for on-topicness, being open to more changes is better than only asking for a single specific concern.

The dragon book has been shipped. This one has 40% more chance of being actually read by me
The last 5 books I ordered I haven't read yet

@JeroenVannevel Which one?

why are compiler related books so expensive ;-;

It's called the dragon book because some editions have a dragon on the cover
Yeah, the price is insane
it boils down to 100€ for a book

> Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools, known to professors, students, and developers worldwide as the "Dragon Book," is available in a new edition.

3:24 PM
Now I'm still wondering why it's called that.

Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools is a computer science textbook by Alfred V. Aho, Monica S. Lam, Ravi Sethi, and Jeffrey D. Ullman about compiler construction. Although more than two decades have passed since the publication of the first edition, it is widely regarded as the classic definitive compiler technology text. It is affectionately known as the Dragon Book to a generation of computer scientists as its cover depicts a knight and a dragon in battle, a metaphor for conquering complexity. This name can also refer to Aho and Ullman's older Principles of Compiler Design. == First... ==
@Quill Where do you see that? As far as I can tell, this is the latest edition from 2013

(If it did already work, there's CR (opinions and more …) tag vhdl - be sure to visit How do I ask a good question?.) — greybeard 31 secs ago

That's a seriously good move from the publisher.

like right in the description @JeroenVannevel

oh
yeah, that's the description about this new edition lol
This is the latest version
New chapters include:

Chapter 10 Instruction-Level Parallelism

Chapter 11 Optimizing for Parallelism and Locality
It sounds incredibly interesting

3:27 PM
Who should read that book?

People interested in writing/understanding lexers, parsers, etc
It's a niche target group

people with massive wallets

But I'm sure it can contain a lot of interesting things

I'm already having trouble understanding JavaScript, let alone compilers.

uh oh. I just realized it will probably be in C/C++

3:29 PM
Probably.
Are you too spoiled for that?

Possibly

is amazon lying to me?

Mainly it's just annoying to dive both into a new subject and a new language at the same time

@Quill That's a steal.

huh

3:32 PM
@JeroenVannevel It's not too difficult to learn a language from the C family if you already know another.
I'd recommend starting with C and going upwards, but I've seen plenty of people taking the reverse route from C# down.

@Quill I paid 55£ & 4.39£ shipping
@Mast yeah I guess I'll understand some stuff. The memory management things might take some getting used to though

why didn't they lock it already...

Locking isn't intended to be used like that.
It's against spam answers.

3:42 PM
it's also used when you're voting on posts
like the shirt vote post

Zak
@Quill Plus, better to have it all concentrated in one place, than force it to find other avenues

lock != split

locking would be the worst possible action
you don't counter "you guys didn't listen to us!" with a lock

Zak
@Quill Sure. But if you unilaterally end that discussion, people are still going to want to have it, and are simply going to go and create other Meta questions to continue it.

> Thank you for your candidness, patience and feedback. We're going to delay the implementation for now - we'll be back soon to open some more discussions.
They're basically saying they're done taking feedback from that question, if someone else goes and makes another meta question similar, it'll just get closed as unconstructive unless it brings up a different, valid point

Zak
3:45 PM
@Quill Sure, but they haven't stopped people continuing to post and vote on it.

Which is why if they've stopped feedback, I'm surprised they didn't stop it altogether, and lock the post
anyway, totally not worth arguing over/discussing
a decent proposal would be nice

Zak
TBH, I still haven't seen a good explanation of why they're trying to change it in the first place.

because the whole system is incomplete and liable for lawsuits or something

@Mast something like this would be cool

Q: What is wrong with this python script?

PaulA friend of mine sent me his implementation of a solution to a task we were working on and it is written in Python. I have never used Python, I usually use C++, but I want to see if it gets the correct output with his code. I could provide the task if needed, but as for now I only think that some...

@Duga It's in response on an answer. It does invalidate the answer by doing so of-course.
Somebody should probably take a look at that, I'm too error-prone at the moment.

Q: Efficiently processing large (~100 MB) structured binary data in Python 3

glSI need to process the data contained in a (relatively) large binary file. The file has the following structure: 40 bytes of initialization, 4 bytes, 1 byte, 4 bytes, 1 byte, ... lots of such 5-byte blocks ... The number of 5-byte blocks (to which I'll refer to as 'timetags' in the following) ...

I love our medical system. I remembered I need a reminder injection against Hep A so I went online at 19:40 on a sunday and after 30 seconds I have an appointment with the doctor two streets away at 18:45 tomorrow

6:42 PM
Perhaps I should migrate.

@JeroenVannevel Meanwhile I had to call my local GP 49 times to get an appointment. I arrive 10 minutes early, have to wait half an hour to actually get into the appointment, and am them told they can't prescribe me anything for 2 weeks.
Because you aren't able to book appointments in advance, they have to be booked on the day.. lol

Looks like you should migrate as well ^^

I am sorely tempted to migrate to mainland europe

Looks like Belgium is the dream
also it has me

Is that a pro or a con @JeroenVannevel?

PRO AND YOU KNOW IT BABY

@DanPantry Just don't come here, you'll be disappointed by the bureaucracy.
Belgium has more advantages.
Or go to Sweden. Has different advantages.

I don't consider short blonde girls "advantages" :b (@Sweden)

They ain't that short.

There are also boys

Then they're definitely not an advantage
:(
I am quite short for a guy

Irrelevant.

You always struck me as a tall punker

nope, I'm short, which i'm never allowed to forget 8)

I'm slightly above that -- like 172 or so.

Q: RLE-like string compression in clojure

AttilioThere have been already many similar questions to this one (e.g. this and this, just to point two), but I did not find any for clojure. The goal is to compress a string in a RLE-like way: i.e. each character "run" is replaced by the character and the count of the run. Some examples: aaaabbccc ...

Algorithms are hard.

@CaptainObvious Stop being so confusing with similar names :D
@Mast Depending on the algorithm I will agree

All of them.
I'm used to fixing things straight-forward, but I'm trying to move to a more algorithmically approach so it's easier to write relatively language agnostic.

Using algorithms is normal for me, writing them myself is very hard though

9:34 PM
In all fairness, I have a kind-of TDD approach.
"Keep kicking it till it moves in the right direction"
Often the "easiest to write that happens to work" wins, instead of the fastest. Since I have no clue about the latter.
Which slowly turns out to be a problem.
And then there's maintainability, idiomaticy and all that.
Found some awesome courses on www.algorist.com though.
Just found an algorithm problem that appears to solve one of the early Euler problems. Perhaps I'll eventually get the hang of this.

Anything that's correct helps in understand algorithms I guess
