Q: Best of Code Review 2015

200_successAs 2015 comes to an end, let's kick off Best of Code Review 2015! @200_success / others. I really like the Newcomer answer, so I will start with that one. There are some other posts that came up, (but not winners) that I will also award bounties to at some point. But, in for the immediate process, I will start with codereview.stackexchange.com/a/107067/31503 and we can go from there?

Proceed as you see fit. Coordinate with the other sponsors as necessary.

Congrats, winners.

I'm guessing that was a super-ping, and svick's user ID is 23504.
Well, svick's chat ID is 23504.
I'd need Jamal to prove the first point.

Yes, it's by chat ID. Super-pings now allow searching by name, instead of just looking up the chat ID.

I wonder why it showed up funny in the star bar.

Maybe the starring system autocompletes itself, but didn't understand the two ampersands.

I'm pretty sure I've seen super-pings in there before.
Maybe not.

Q: Removing duplicates from a linked list without a buffer

SomeoneI am practicing a problem in "Cracking the Coding Interview". The problem is to remove duplicates in a linked list without the use of a buffer. I interpreted this as not using a list or any large data structure such as a hash to store unique nodes. My algorithm is inefficient I think. It iterat...

Q: Functional Programming methods on Array.prototype

seeadotIn order to better understand functional programming in Javascript, I thought I'd try to recreate (as well as extend) some of the higher order functions on the Array object. Was I wrong in recommending deletion here? codereview.stackexchange.com/a/116944/34073
Really, I think any answer that takes one sentence should be a comment.

I think it could be improved upon; I wouldn't recommend deletion though

@Quill I don't see anything, except the space before the ++, and that probably doesn't matter.
Well, I left a comment along that line too.
Unfortunately, I can't un-recommend deletion until I get full control over my delete votes again.

2:19 AM

If the reviewer has no intention of improving it, then I would recommend deletion
A downvote would be totally appropriate though

Yeah.
I actually answered it first because I was almost done, then 200 hammered it.

    var result = this[i].newFilter(fn);
    if (result.length === 0) { continue }
Some people seriously amaze me
I'm actually tempted to hammer this question

You have a gold tag badge?

2:41 AM
No, I wish I did.

Then you can't hammer it.

By hammer, I mean solicit votes
anyway, I shouldn't do that just because the author doesn't actually use a test case that's valid
1/3 of these functions do not work as expected

I think that is grounds for a close vote.

Oh well, I guess I can use that time to save up so I have to take on less debt later.

why won't they let you take your dog?

Don't know. Probably because she is the best behaved one.
Their official argument is that I can't leave her at my house while I am at work.
My argument is she would be happier being with me half the day than never being with me.

@CaptainObvious wow, I haven't written a C# answer in ages

@Quill I was just about to post the same. Are you sure that dictionary compiles though?
I think you typically do {key, value}.

shouldn't it?
Oh, you're right

And do Letters.GetValue().
Like, Letters.GetValue("A").
(You can replace "A" with a variable.)
And, you can also do string.Join(" ", FirstLetter, SecondLetter, ThirdLetter).
Not sure if that is a better option in this instance.

I was going to suggest that, but I figured string.Format is probably more valuable to learn

And his naming is bad. Those aren't "FirstLetter", it is more like "FirstString".
Yeah, either way.

string.Format and concatenating directly is entirely the same result
string.Format will even be "worse" because it has to parse the format

I suppose there's that for those who don't even know to use Dictionaries

Most likely a linked list. I've never made one, and I've never looked up how to do it.

Meganeura is a genus of extinct insects from the Carboniferous period (approximately 300 million years ago), which resembled and are related to the present-day dragonflies. With wingspans of up to 65 cm (25.6 in), M. monyi is one of the largest known flying insect species; the Permian Meganeuropsis permiana is another. Meganeura were predatory, and fed on other insects. Fossils were discovered in the French Stephanian Coal Measures of Commentry in 1880. In 1885, French paleontologist Charles Brongniart described and named the fossil "Meganeura" (large-nerved), which refers to the network of veins...

@SimonForsberg which two year old question?

11:18 AM
i have question regards to singleton pattern. In our application we have jsf bean with session scope, in this bean i'm using (we don't have any DI mechanism) object some kind of service. Just calling methods and receive data. And my question is should i use here singleton pattern as the class/service does not have any state of application

I rejected the edit and placed the comment to prevent new removal attempts.

@SimonForsberg It's very hard and cumbersome to pass around data in a WP app thus using a singleton to contain some global state is useful

12:02 PM
Alright, before you ask
This morning I received a text from my colleague telling me that he went on SO last night and looked at my account and sa wthat I had been answering some questions on work time.
As a result, he appears to think that I am procrastinating in work (which isn't always far from the truth, frankly) and intends to go to my boss with that information (or already has, I'm not sure).

Zak
Your colleague is an asshole.

So I'm going to be stepping down as RO so I can focus on my work. I love CR but I'd rather not get fired over it
Never mind the fact nearly every answer I post is in lunch time
3
@Zak I wouldn't say he is an asshole for having concerns
Though I'm not very happy that he went directly to my boss with his concerns instead of approaching me first
And from the wording of his text, I feel that is the case.
So, as I will be not be on 2nd or the exchange in general during most of work I don't think I'll be a suitable fit for RO - I'll still be here after work hours and such.
I imagine he is referring to this answer, which I posted while him (and all of my colleagues) were out on lunch.. and it only took me 15 minutes. But I disgress :s

@DanPantry Good choice.

Zak
@DanPantry I guess at this point, best thing to do is work out how you're going to convince your boss that your activity here on CR has a direct, measurable improvement on your work.

@Zak If I'm perfectly honest, it doesn't.

12:12 PM
chat logs are publicly available and searchable through google
what you meant to say was "It totally does and I love my boss"

I do use 2nd monitor + CR in particular as an avenue of procrastination. While I do learn a lot about good code here, the main reason I'm here is to be able to socialise with like-minded individuals who have a personality and aren't forced to interact with me by way of being physically co-located.

Zak
@DanPantry If my experience as an inexperienced coder on CR is anything like yours, then there are all sorts of ways it improves your work.

@DanPantry It probably does if you're not too active here, clearing your mind can be helpfult o productivity... I at least honestly have problems to concentrate 4 hours straight on some days

Though, no one really procrastinates for no reason. The reason I do is because the experience of developing with the tools I have (or don't have) is very frustrating, which I have aired as grievances before.

Zak
Reviewing other people's code is how I get ideas on how to build mine
3

12:15 PM
@skiwi Well, yeah, I mean, you can look at my answer log on CR and see that I hardly ever actually review. Doing a review does clear my mind a bit.

Zak
Much easier to critique somebody else's code than your own

I think the ultimate implication is that my colleague doesn't like the fact that I do anything other than work at any point of the day other than lunch.
Which is a perfectly fine viewpoint, but like you said @skiwi.. it can hard to focus for 4 hours straight unless you're in 'the zone'.

Zak
I have a new question. What kind of performance metrics does your company/boss use/care about?
And do you know how you stack up on them?

@Zak As far as I know we don't use any formal metrics.
We use an agile-based task list that is weighted per hour of effort and that sort of thing
But, really, that's it.
I've always asked at every 1-1 in the past if there have been any concerns about my performance or anywhere I can improve and the response has always been "No, everything's fine"

@DanPantry go work in spain
it's encouraged there

Zak
12:17 PM
@DanPantry Well then, that's your argument
If you can't point to anything specifically

As much as I appreciate the advice, I'n not looking for ways to justify "but this is why I'm on CR"
That may work for my boss, but not for my colleague

Zak
your colleague is a separate issue
he can't fire you

@DanPantry Did my question get you into trouble? That wasn't my intention.

It's my colleague that is made uncomfortable by the procrastination. It's him who it affects, and I will be mindful of that :)

Zak
@DanPantry Make a second account ^^

12:18 PM
@Mast No, me choosing to answer your question MIGHT have gotten me in trouble. but that's not your fault.
I don't intend to make a second account.. this is a kick up the ass that I needed and I will take the advice on board. @Zak

Zak
Fair enough

tldr pissed off at colleague for not approaching me directly, but I do agree with him
to the Nth :-)

Zak
But still, if you find yourself having to convince your boss that he shouldn't fire you. Just point out that *whatever* you're doing with your time, it's getting results.

@DanPantry Don't move this conversation to the Nth.

@Mast okay, fine

12:20 PM
It's about you stepping down as RO for this room.

possible answer invalidation by NOJ75 on question by NOJ75: codereview.stackexchange.com/posts/116964/revisions

@Zak If he wants to enforce the whole "no work on anything other than work during 9-5" I may have to walk.
That's simply not how I (or many other people) work

Zak
Sure, but that's not the immediate concern.

I don't think I'm in a position for my boss to straight up fire me, lol
Formal warning at the worst
But it does damage my ties with the colleague and my boss

Zak
In that case, I guess just wait and see.
You never know, your boss might be a lot more understanding of a typical developer's workflow

12:22 PM
@Zak I think he is, but again, it's not really my boss that is the concern here

@DanPantry I totally respect your decision about stepping down as RO. After all, work is more important than CR.

It's my colleague that aired the concerns, and it's him that needs to be impressed due to this.
@SimonForsberg I consider my work on CR to be work.

There's a reason why I try to not spend to much time in this room during work hours.

My boss may not see it that way - nor might my colleague - but my way of looking at it is that if I get stuff done there shouldn't be an issue on the in between.

Zak
As to how to deal with your colleague, my best advice is actually to take it to The Workplace

12:24 PM
@DanPantry Sometimes I do too, especially when I'm asking things about stuff I need help with at work. And then there's mod duties of course... but that's another story and probably not something that my company wants to pay me for.

+1
@SimonForsberg I agree
If it gets to the point where it's impacting my work (and obviously it is), then I'm stepping over the line, which is why I appreciate the mention from my colleague
Again, not annoyed at the mention.. just at the way he went about it.

It's such a shame that most humans have to work 7-8hours
I would limit that to 6hours at most

@BrunoCosta in our task list we do actually budget for 6 hours a day (I'm in work 8 hours if you include lunch)

that's nice
that's my point nobody should work for so long
be in work*

In a lot of modern tech companies, there's an increasing trend to have developers work at least part-time remotely and for unfixed hours
I have a friend who works in Groupon, and obviously we have SO doing that too
My company is more enterprise than modern tech, though
But yes! TLDR, I won't be RO (at least for now) nor will I be as active on CR/2nd during work hours.

Zak

Not starring because I like it, just to give it some visibility

12:40 PM
There's a lot of productive stuff to be doing outside of work. (I specially like to see some videos on youtube about physics i.e) You can also learn a lot from that. It would be nice having some kind of a global organization that would deliver projets to most tech people (scientist, physicists, mathematicians, electronic engineers) on off time while even paying them a small about to their contribution on those projects.
But I understand it could be hard to manage to pay according to the effort delivered.

Zak
@BrunoCosta Isn't that called open-source? :p
2

It is but not quite :p
I dislike the fact that there are way to many open-source projects to deliver the same contents for instance. Although one could argue that those also may result on the discovery of finding the best tool for the job
I would like to feel compelled to participate on some kind of open source project but up until now that didn't happen. Maybe because I didn't try too hard to find a project to begin with :|

@BrunoCosta Way too many times it's faster, and more interesting, to do things from scratch rather than improve on existing projects.
@BrunoCosta Three interesting open-source projects for you right here:

On Stack Overflow please post the minimal code necessary to reproduce the problem, or a simulation of the problem. Adding a demo is also helpful (e.g., jsfiddle.net). For a full review of your code, consider posting your question at Stack Exchange's Code Review site. — Michael_B 52 secs ago

@BrunoCosta To tell you the truth, I'm impressed that Brainduck has managed to get that many upvotes.

If anyone has time to review my code on CodeReview, please do so here. Also, this includes a bounty of 50 reputation points. Hurry up, just 5 days left to grab it! :]

@HassanAlthaf Stop doing that.
It's bountied, so it's already featured.
People will notice it.

@Mast Ok.

We don't mind you pimping your own questions, but it's always the first thing you do when you come in.
Like there's nothing else you care about.
It's all about perception.

Yes.. because I come to this room because of that..

1:36 PM
This room isn't intended for that.

I am mostly in the web development rooms on SO.
I'd love to spread some reviews and share some knowledge too but, at the moment, I am not at all good....
I can of course help on SO, because it doesn't require too strong skills other than knowing a particular method/api/framework/syntax.

Q: Google App Script to calculate score card for a certain person, create PDF file, store to drive and email to person

MunkeyI'd appreciate if someone could cast an eye over my dodgey coding and give me some feedback. The use / purpose of the sheet/script is to quality grade calls, emails and chats with customers. A form is filled out and then the script takes over. We feed in a persons name, it grabs the last 9 for...

A: Does the color matter? Just for a laugh

race feverActually (how all answers on Q&A sites should start), the red car will be faster. Or appear to be. In order to understand this we will have to cover the following formula: f = d (xy + Pi) Where f equals the amount of frozen yogurt you ate. d equals how many pages you wrote in your diary. xy is...

Q: How would you improve this point of interaction between Python and Javascript?

dvcolganI'm writing a checkout form for purchasing online tests. You can buy a certification or a recertification, as well as a pdf or book study manual. I'm using Jinja2 templates to provide test data into the Javascript. The test object is a dictionary with the following structure. All prices are i...

D3107I'm not entirely sure what you are trying to ask here... If your intention is to improve yourself as a coder I would highly recommend learning to code to a unified standard such as PEP 0008

Q: Backbone Epoxy js and hierarchies/trees

AlexeyCan you review my code of hierarchies/trees on Epoxy.js. Maybe there's a better way to solve this problem? From the beginning: Item View: this is to display the element li var ItemView = Backbone.Epoxy.View.extend({ tagName: "li", template: new EJS({url: "templates/nodetpl.ejs"}), ...

The last line in this question makes it seem like it could be broken code

so contrary to my belief I'm not an awkward dork?
damn

3:25 PM
What did you get?

yea the box isn't good with C/P

I got 99% Dumb/Dork/Awkward...

It's such a shame the test asks about comics but doesn't ask about anime :(

^^ that

well, yeah ^^^ that definitely

3:27 PM
then again I've probably missed a big part of that, too

I've watched much more anime than I've read comics

You can see by yourself how much anime I've watched... myanimelist.net/animelist/the5ashes

nice list you got there... Have you considered watching Zetsubou no Tempest?

@BrunoCosta I've watched more titles than you, but you've watched longer titles like Hunter x Hunter

@Vogel612 Yes I've considered maybe I was so busy seeing something else xP

@Quill From a cursory look it appears working.

pIcnSltd looks like it's just a red herring.. that element has nothing to do with the premise of his question either
Wait, never mind
I didn't read his question - just the title.
Yes, it would appear his code is either broken or it's not the whole code.

okay cool
