I wonder if we could collude once to post 10 questions at about the same time... :P

Isn't Calvin supposed to be doing 10/day anyway?
He could just post them all at once.

@TanMath I did. Good job. Keep golfing

@Calvin'sHobbies Where are our 10 questions a day? Meeting our graduation requirements is entirely your duty.

i think i have a wonderful solution for obstacle course variation problem
(brute force, but should be fairly short)
if only i had time to write it right now

@quintopia ...but this chat box is too small to contain it? :P

7:09 PM
unfortunately. (if i knew Pyth well it wouldn't be :P)
the real problem is i have to be at work in an hour, and i don't think i could write, debug, and golf it in that time. and even if i could...i'd have to not eat brunch.
by the time work is over someone will have probably posted the same solution :P
i feel like the Thue-Morse question should be a catalog, since it is a fairly standard programming task for demonstrating a language.

@Geobits how?
@Sherlock9 thanks! good job to you as well

I mean, is there a way to get both bonuses? One explicitly says don't print them all, one explicitly says do.
Not that I'm a big fan of bonuses to begin with...

@Geobits oh, maybe I should clear that up. I meant if you do both bonuses (i.e. print them all) then -50% + -10% = -60%
fixed

Both bonuses also change the return type (if using a function) from a boolean type to an array of numbers, which is a bit odd. But you'd still have to output a boolean for false ones, I guess. It's just a bit strange IMO.

@Geobits so it is a bad bonus? any agreement with him?
@Geobits you know, usually, I wouldn't take the advice from an evil AI!

7:18 PM
Why not? How else do you plan to become more evil?

@quintopia Could you help me write a catalog question? I've never done it before, but it seems like a good idea

@Geobits because I am not going to be evil!

Can I just rewrite my question for that?

@quintopia Is it that standard? To be honest, I'd never heard of it before today >_>
I think I've seen the process, but never heard the name or anything.
@TanMath Evil is more fun than good. You're missing out :)

@Geobits Yeah same.

7:22 PM
@Geobits you are wrong

man, my activity on the site is super low compared to the rest of you all

lol @ Dennis' rep graph
nothing nothing nothing SLAM! ALL THE REP FOREVER
3

what's that site that people post surveys on?

/r/samplesize ?

@NathanMerrill strawpoll

7:33 PM
thank you

so I found this lovely python answer for the thue-morse challenge on the internet... Can I submit it and attribute it to the author of the answer?

Only if you post your answer as a community wiki

@AlexA. oh... i see

It doesn't make sense to gain or lose reputation based on an answer that isn't your own work.

Is there a way of displaying the rep graph in full length?

7:35 PM
start to now?

@flawr Profile > Activity > Reputation > Graph

@AlexA. true

Is there a way open your own rep graph on the mobile app?

sup

Hey

7:35 PM
@Sherlock9 I don't think so
@sweerpotato Hola

Alex, I am now so much better in tribo!

but if a golf I python online solution, I can post it?

@AlexA. o/

Darn @AlexA.

7:36 PM
@AlexA. This shows only the "derivative" I was refering to the miniature one that shows the actual rep count?

ugh

@NathanMerrill first voter!

@TanMath Was it ungolfed before?

@Sherlock9 yes

@NathanMerrill You forgot PHP!!!

7:37 PM
I'm not writing a controller in PHP

and CSS!

@TanMath That's kind of a gray area IMO. The approach isn't your own work but the shortening is. I would probably still make it a CW but others may disagree with me on that.

no way

@NathanMerrill BTW, for javascript, on the graph it says "java"! lol
@AlexA. but I put some effort into it

As the questioner, I don't care one way or the other @TanMath, but I might be too new to know better

7:38 PM
@TanMath no it doesnt

@Optimizer we need to have a competition for CSS. You aren't allowed to overwrite, but you need to do X while your opponent does Y

@NathanMerrill There should be an "other" option. Personally I was a fan of Katya's language agnostic KOTH where the controller was written in Python but submissions could be in any language so long as they could be run from the command line.

@Optimizer oh yeah.. that is because there is a java option!

@AlexA. that isn't an option in this case

Ok

7:39 PM
why does everybody like Java?!

I still abstain from voting because I don't know any of those languages well enough to participate effectively anyway. :P

I don't like Java

blame Rainbolt

@VisualMelon You like C#

I like it because people know it and it is reasonably fast

7:40 PM
@Optimizer he is not even here!

I like Python 3

@TanMath because Java is the perfect golfing language. I always get the high score!
7

but he is the reason Java is linked with KOTH

@NathanMerrill people know python, and it is good for golfing

right, but python is slow

7:40 PM
@KevinW. lol

I've had to rewrite python challenges in Java to make them faster

I didn't vote because I've never done a King of the Hill challenge

@KevinW. over 9000!

@Sherlock9 so vote for python!

Javascript is great because of stack snippets
I'm not sure about run time

7:41 PM
@Sherlock9 I have never either, but have seen some KoTH challenges with good Python answers
@NathanMerrill agreed

how fast is Javascript compared to Java?

its twice as fast

I've also never looked through a King of the Hill challenge thread, so I forget what it is.

@Sherlock9 it like bots participating, i think

@Sherlock9 people write bots that compete against each other

7:43 PM
@Sherlock9 its where you marry the princess of the hill to become the king of the hill
3

Ah, I see

@AlexA. That's probably the route I'll go if/when I post a KotH. Makes the most sense to me.

@El'endiaStarman Yep. Then you get the most varied participation. Otherwise it's the same group of people that know the language that's being used for each KOTH. :P

I've posted about this before, but there are two big problems with language-agnostic KoTHs (and I've done quite a few):
first is that making reliable communication among all languages is hard
but we've managed to get around most of those issues

I pretty much don't partake in KOTHs because using Java or JavaScript is a painful experience for me

7:46 PM
Ah, the KotH I have in mind (N-Battleship) has no direct communication between bots.

I'm still not clear why that's such a problem - parent process to child process IO should be very easy

second is that anybody that wants to run their bot against the other bots have to have all of the languages installed
@VisualMelon because languages handle IO differently

@NathanMerrill Enter @PhiNotPi's online KOTH server!

but next to all of them have STDIN and STDOUT, and a way to start a process, write to one, and listen to the other

@AlexA. what is that?

7:48 PM
@TanMath PhiNotPi made a server for remotely running KOTH challenges and displaying the results in real time.

@AlexA. where is it?
when was it used?
Etc. etc.

To my knowledge it hasn't been officially used for something here yet.
I'll try to find the link.

I am going to post a meta question about @BrianTompsett-汤莱恩

Here's some info about it:
33
Q: Introducing a KOTH server!

PhiNotPiThe Motivation The desire for a KOTH server has been around for a while. There have been a couple notable meta discussions about it in the past: Creating an official place to become a King of the Hill tester How could we run KotHs in a distributed fashion? By being able to host KOTHs on a se...

@VisualMelon if you are doing simple "send as args, run process, read stdout", that's easier, but if you want the process to stay alive between messages (which makes messages smaller, and makes run time significantly faster), then it gets really tough

7:49 PM
@TanMath Uh, what about him...?

@AlexA. how he stays here forever

He doesn't log out
That's not something to ask on meta since it's not about the site, it's about chat.
It's something to ask in chat ;)

@NathanMerrill I'm referring to 2-way STDIO communications - the controller can start a child process, which it can feed data to, and simultaneously read data from by re-directing it's STDOUT

@AlexA. but even so, after being so inactive, you should be "kicked out" ;)

@TanMath No
Why would that be a useful thing?

7:51 PM
@AlexA. i disagree.. There were questions about starring in meta.SE
@AlexA. are you sure?

Yeah
@TanMath Oh you mean Meta.SE, not PPCG Meta.

@VisualMelon right. I've run into so many problems when doing that. It's definitely the way to do it, but its chalk full of bugs

well then, my chat system is messed up

I'm not sure what you mean.

@Dennis ha!

7:51 PM
I don't see any benefit to kicking users for inactivity.
For all we know he could be following the transcript but not talking.

@AlexA. my account leaves a room if I am inactive for a long time

Meta is for questions about PPCG and the underlying platform, not for questions about BrianTompsett-汤莱恩.

@Dennis i know, so?

@Dennis He means Meta.SE.
@TanMath I see Brian come and go. Same with Chris Jester-Young.

How, how it's possible that he's constantly logged in.

7:53 PM
@NathanMerrill aye, I've never quite got why though, I don't know if I've ever bothered to try it, but I'd know how to do it in C#, and it would be very easy - no effort for the child process, and nothing complicated for the controller (so I imagine it would be easy enough in most languages) - I'd better check I can actually get it to work some time

Do I ever leave? I can't really tell.

@Dennis Yeah I think so

@Dennis i think you do
@Dennis well, according to @AlexA. he simply never logs off!

Just a guess.

That's entirely possible. As long has you have a chat window open, you stay.
I think.

7:54 PM
@VisualMelon I've never done it in c#, so perhaps it has well-tested code in it. My experience lies with python, so maybe I'm using the wrong language

Why does it matter, anyway?
If you get logged out, log back in.

@Dennis oh, that is the deal! he keeps his chat window open forever
@Dennis when was the last time he said something in this room?

I think you don't even need a window with this specific room.
I don't think he's ever said anything in TNB.

@Dennis really?

Oct 5 at 8:17, by Brian Tompsett - 汤莱恩
I left it logged in in a tab that was on a minimised browser and just left it there! :-)

7:56 PM
@Dennis actually, it seems he has ^

OK, chat search is borken.

@BrianTompsett-汤莱恩 Why do you submit your speakers to such strife as the pings of the Nineteenth Byte?

do I leave?
@FlagAsSpam he can turn off sounds for chat

^

> No speakers were harmed while being logged into this chatroom

7:58 PM
Hi

@FlagAsSpam Click the megaphone icon next to "all rooms"

@Optimizer That's cheating, though.

Not for people who don't want the sounds

@FlagAsSpam well, I thought you were over the yesterday's cheating, so there you go.

> yesterday's cheating ... what?

7:59 PM
0c

That's not cheating.
That's... being creative.
