Q: Community Promotion Ads - Let's advertise this site!

Zizouz212We recently entered public beta, so we need to get word out to the rest of Stack Exchange about Open Source Stack Exchange. One of the best ways of doing this is with Community Promotion Ads. Here is part of the canonical spiel given on meta posts on graduated sites where we submit our ads for v...

1:49 AM
Ah, the ad thread. Awesome.
@Zizouz212 Mind if I share some constructive criticism of your ad?

Yeah, what's up?
@Adam How can I help you?
@Adam I bow down before you. How may I assist?

When I glanced at your ad, at first I wasn't able to tell there was a computer monitor in the background.

Ah, that. It was more intended as an example :)
You can down vote it to oblivion if you would like :)

Oh okay. Nevermind me then 8-)

Oh lol

1:59 AM
It did give me an idea similar to it though. Hope you don't mind. :)

It's all good. Can't wait to see it!

2:29 AM
@Zizouz212 The first sentence of your question has Open Source SE, might want to change that to the right site :)

Hah I was wondering why it said that.
Someone needs to develop Copy/Paste 2.0 already because Copy/Paste 1.0 lets too many people down.

3:38 AM
@Zizouz212, I can't edit your community ads post and you preempted the one I was preparing. Can you change a few things on your post?
Change:
I invite everyone to submit ideas for our ad as answers, following the above guidelines.
To:
Normally, these ads would link to the main site, but we could link to a specific tag or even individual questions.

Let's use this question to collect ad designs that we can vote upon as a community and then submit to the relevant site(s). Please use one answer per design and indicate which site (or sites) you feel it'd fit best on, if is targeting a specific site.
---
Also, keep the link to my previous post, but summarize the results so far:
Our suggested sites, so far, are:

 - [Ask Different](apple.stackexchange.com) - Has a [hardware-recommendation](apple.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/…) tag
 - [Ask Ubuntu](askubuntu.com) - Has a [hardware-recommendation](askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/hardware-recommendation) tag
 - [Graphic Design](graphicdesign.stackexchange.com) - Has a [hardware-recommendation](graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/…) tag
@Adam, I like your ad, but I'm not sure if "StackExchange" is appropriate any more.
Blog post: blog.stackoverflow.com/2015/09/… (edited, because the animated gif was bothering me)
And, it feels weird to say "Stack Overflow" when the ad will be anywhere but there
Could it just be a more general "the internet"?

4:29 AM
@Andy Completely forgot about that. It does feel pretty weird to think of Stack Overflow as the whole network. I'll reword it.
And once again I run into the difficult question of whether to capitalize "internet."

4 hours later…
8:06 AM
@Andy “Stack Exchange” is correct when referring to the network of Q&A sites. What changed is the name of the company.

6 hours later…
2:33 PM
And, finally, @Adam has overtaken me on rep.
I did get a "top new user" email, though.

1 hour later…
3:38 PM
@ArtOfCode Almost to 1000 rep. The site needs us.

@Adam Yep. I'll be there soon.
Currently working on a community ad, though.
Precisely 14 rep away from it.

4:03 PM
Looking forward to some more ads.

@Adam never thought I'd see that phrase

@ArtOfCode Is yours aimed at a certain site?
@enderland Which phrase?

@Adam Not particularly, no

@Adam "want more ads"

Oh haha
This is probably the only time I'd ever say that.

1 hour later…
5:17 PM
I think it might be good to explain why product recommendations in the form, "X or Y?" are basically XY questions and not good fits and should be rewritten, "given constraints X/Y what is a good tool to do X?" — enderland yesterday
Anyone have ideas on what that section should look like? I'm not in a word smithing mood right now (I've been writing documentation all morning)

5:40 PM
@Andy I'll type something up later today if no one else already has by then.

2 hours later…
7:19 PM
John (not pinging you here because I did it three times already on meta), I like your ad.

thanks!
and yes, as far as I'm aware the retina requirements are just 200%

8:15 PM
@JohnB Great ad. It's good that someone has the more general ads covered.
All I've been doing is thinking of comedic IT jokes for specific components.

I like 'em

A: Community Promotion Ads - Let's advertise this site!

Undo It's a start. All the little icons are public domain (CC0) from The Noun Project. Icons I either used or thought about using: https://thenounproject.com/term/electronic/4425/ https://thenounproject.com/term/electronic/4427/ https://thenounproject.com/term/electronic/17471/ https://thenounproj...

Can't say I'm not proud of this :)

@Undo I'm in love.

Is there an easy way to post a GIMP file?
Ideally I want to not put it on my server

What's a GIMP file?
Image format I assume...

.xcf?
Poor man's .ps / .ai

Hmm, was the image a gimp?

8:39 PM

It looks nice @Undo
only recommendation I would make is to reverse that no-name-brand pocket console gaming system

ER ME GUDDDD!!! GAME BOY!!!!!!!!

@JohnB Not sure I like it as much that way
Feels backwardsish

like that I mean

Ohhh
Lemme try that

8:42 PM
I can upload the SVG if you'd like

Oh yeah, it is reverse...

@JohnB nah, I like trying to make GIMP do things

hehe ok

bah
too hard. I'd take an svg :P

np :)
ok I did not expect that to one-box

8:44 PM
Yaaay thank you :)

@JohnB What program is that?

Illustrator

@Zizouz212 illustrator

Cool. AI makes sense then :)

Much better. Thanks @JohnB :)

8:48 PM
awesome!
I deal with a lot of screen printing and am quick to notice artwork that should be reversed :)
maybe inverted would be a better term for that

One suggestion only because I'm a huge typography critic: enlarge the URL at the bottom to match the width of "Hardware Recommendations."

@Adam Nah, the url doesn't need to be prominent, IMO. Site name does, as that is how people refer to it

9:05 PM
We're talking maybe 10px difference in width here.

9:17 PM
I'd personally be inclined to leave it smaller - this will only be shown in a web context, where clicking on it goes to the site. If we were making a print version, I'd definitely agree with you.

Q: Intel "Inside everywhere"

belfordUnusual question came up on our website: TEMPEST proof PC / Notebook? What do you think about questions like this? Can it be taken seriously?

Hmmm... Still waiting for my 50 rep to come in on Area 51 :/

I got mine just now.

I didn't -_-
This is outrageous. I need to complain.

Roooooobeeeeerrrrttttttttt

9:31 PM
Time. To go to meta.

I got mine as well

I haven't checked.

I've gotten mine... but seriously @Ziz, what do you think you'll do with your Area 15 rep? :P

I don't know what Area 15 is

I've got 2.4k of the stuff, and it's not all that much different

9:37 PM
Nope, not yet

I just want an extra free commitment
That's basically all that I want

Someone's still trying to DOS me.

DOS? Why?
How?

Do we have a security breach?

@ArtOfCode Oh boy, that sounds fun
Who'd you make mad this time?

9:42 PM
We're going to DEFCON 1, ladies and gentlemen.

I have an idea. Not that I'd ever put names on it, of course.

Oh dear, I think I know who you're thinking

They've been at it all day. It's not working, I've firewalled 'em.
@Zizouz212 Yep. Yes you do.

Oh god.

Allow me to quote from my router log.

If it's someone on SE, gather info and report them.

UDP?
Well, more proof it could be a DOS then

@Adam Already looking into that. Mod tools are useful.

10:47 PM
I had a pretty great ad design going and then Photoshop decided to merge all the layers, lock it, and not let me save or undo anything.

11:32 PM
@belford, is it still unclear? How to unput from hold? — intelinside 2 hours ago
All they did was add 'etc' to their question and post a comment about how no one believes in privacy.
wait, I got the timeline mixed up. It was just the comment.

That post is 100% not needed in my opinion.

@Adam I'd be inclined to just let the roomba get it in a week or two
If we had our own mods, I'd ask them to kill it. But no need bothering a CM about it

@Undo True. But now we have a clear example of what not to ask.

That's a decent point
