@SimonAndréForsberg I doubt Wikipedia has a list of holy-wars, except the 'real' ones. So far I haven't found it. Perhaps under a different name...
comes close
But there's way more...
Or somebody posts some code so we can go on-topic again.
@Mast I also doubt it has that
It would probably result in an editing war.
@Mast Using tabs, or spaces?
2
No, such a wiki.
It's opinion based what is and what isn't a religious war.
which is why it's not on Wikipedia
14:07
Huh, list of 10 biggest religious wars: addictivelists.com/10-biggest-religious-wars-ever-fought <--- apart from the crusades they are all new to me.
@Donald.McLean @rolfl About POI (SPOILER ALERTS for those who haven't seen season 4 finale)
@rolfl I'm Dutch, so it won't surprise you I knew #1
Wikipedia does have a list of ridiculous edit wars.
@SimonAndréForsberg Ooooh
== Notes == 1. [147] Not really an edit war, but still... == External links == Wikipedia’s Lamest Edit Wars...
14:11
@Mast I should note that I have heard of many of the wars, just not that they were religious wars.
@SimonAndréForsberg The English could use some work, but worthy of a reopen I think

It looks like a possible edit war, as the OP rolled back an edit of mine.

@EthanBierlein soo... you extensively removed fluff from a post where the user has 1 rep
and your edit summary is: "deleted 184 characters in body" ...
I'd probably have rolled back, too
Best to take the time to explain it very simply in the comments then to get into an edit war

not everybody understands why other people can edit their posts
in fora it's often the case that only mods and the OP can edit a post
Mhm. Actually, I rolled back and realized that the OP had added a description, but re-added the useless fluff.
So, I edited again and added the description.
I think if the OP does another rollback, I'll post a comment.
@EthanBierlein Thanks.

@Quill I saw one episode of The Mentalist, then dropped it. If it's now finished, then I might consider giving it another shot.

That and printUrl that doesn't actually print anything.
We seriously need to get more Scala users on this site.

16:49
on a related note, you should definitely stop using URL. the results of .equals() are dependent on whether you're connected to the network or not... — Vogel612 1 min ago
@Vogel612 - huh? ^^^^
what alternative is there other than URL?
URI
which doesn't resolve the hostname to check for equality..
they are not using equals, and they need to open a connection.
which requires a host-name resolve anyway
I know the question is crap, but that comment has me confused.
> Note, the URI class does perform escaping of its component fields in certain circumstances. The recommended way to manage the encoding and decoding of URLs is to use URI, and to convert between these two classes using toURI() and URI.toURL().
that comment is actually just stating the trivia
@Donald.McLean maybe I just have to give Scala another try
oh while I have you at hand @rolfl
16:52
@Vogel612 Yes, but, despite the name printURL, they are not printing the URL, but the data that is downloaded from the URL.....
there is no method URI.openConnection() .... or similar.
true, it's not that relevant to the question, but I think it's the best reason to stop using URL and start relying on URI
@Vogel612 You cannot use URI on it's own to connect to a remote site.... !!!
and if you have to open a connection use the toURL() of URI ...
(SHOULD I USE SHOUTY_CASE?)
16:53
no need
toURL returns a URL.... right?
@SimonAndréForsberg Or just vote for my answers on Scala questions. :-)
@rolfl right. but you handle a URI instead of a URL...
which is safer in terms of equality comparisons, general container behavior and so on, right?
Huh... not going to try to convince you otherwise, but there's nothing wrong with his use of URL in that code as far as I am concerned.
Let's get on to what you want me for, though
how can I help?
I got a stored procedure that's using old-style joins and recently had to expand that
in doing that I joined onto a 5th or 6th table (still old-style) with the equivalent of a left inner join
16:57
Ouch, *= ?
postgres...
no SQLServer syntax..
Hmm... there's no such thing as a left inner join... you mean left outer join?
(or is there something I am missing?)
from table1, table2, tablex WHERE table1.fk2 = table2.pk AND table2.fkx = tablex.pk
now I need to stop restricting the result set to only those records that have a matching record in tablex
and tried: AND (table2.fkx = tablex.pk OR table2.fkx = NULL)
but... that doesn't change the result-set...
hmm. I mean just a left join then
You mean just an "inner join".
there's no lefty/righty concept for inner joins.
which kinda explains the shrinking resultset .... should've though of that
17:00
but, this makes me think that you want an outer-join.
quite possibly so, yes
1 min ago, by Vogel612
and tried: AND (table2.fkx = tablex.pk OR table2.fkx = NULL)
I want to land at a left outer join...
You want table2 to join to tablex when there's a tablex record, but to return null on the right side when table2's fk is null.
without killing the diffstat, if possible, since "much diff is much error-potential"
17:01
So, you want a left outer join....
exactly
everything on the left side (table2), and whatever's on the right side, or null's if there's nothing on the right side.
correct

OK, let me check postgres syntax, but it is probably as easy as saying: AND table2.fkx *= tablex.pk
But, if tablex joins to any other table in any other way, it could be messy
17:03
isn't that *= syntax deprecated and nonstandard?
oh it is messy already....
7 mins ago, by Vogel612
I got a stored procedure that's using old-style joins and recently had to expand that
if you want ansi-style, then the whole thing should be restructured.... ;-)
that whole thing is in desperate need of rewriting as a view
because the procedure runs across 3 tables or something...
but "ain't nobody got time fo' dat" they say
and "who's gonna pay fo' dat" they say
alas I digress...
First day of new work done :D
@Vogel612 you will likely have to convert the query to ansi style joins.
hmm..
17:09
from table1 inner join table2 on table1.fk1 - table2.pk
    left outer join tablex on table2.fkx = tablex.pk
well it's worth a shot
because if I have to do that, I might as well rewrite the whole mess into a view
Anyone here has experienced/heard about Qt and QML for cross-platform apps?
qt is very popular for a number of years - especially in the UNIX/Windows cross-compile arena.
write-once, run on both.
It is also the unerpinning of KDE, which is about half the Linux desktop market (as opposed to Gnome).....
Bottom line, as far as I know, GUI applications that need to run on both windows, and Unix, typically use either Java, or qt.

@rolfl Yeah, you can't use a wildcard to make those work. :-(
And you certainly don't want to roll out a new cert for each new site we launch.
Darn, I'm needing a DisplayPort to HDMI cable, they're cheap to ship from Asia, but that takes way too long
@skiwi Uh, are you trying to use an HDMI-only display from a MacBook Air or something?
@ChrisJester-Young Lenovo Thinkpad W520, only got DisplayPort and VGA, and the monitors here at work have HDMI cables
18:06
@skiwi No 2nd monitor for you!
5
@rolfl I've got to star that, but I don't like it!
@skiwi Close enough to my presumption, then. ;-) (MacBook Air only has Thunderbolt/mDP, no HDMI.)
The correct answer is to get DisplayPort monitors. ;-)
Next religious war ..... is it better to get a DP cable with an HDMI adaptor, or an HDMI cable, with a DP adaptor?
At Stack Exchange, we have a get-whatever-equipment-you-need-for-the-job policy, so I got a couple of Dell P2415Q displays (24" UHD).
And yes, those use DP. ;-)
I'd personally prefer to use DP for everything, so DP cable with HDMI adaptor sounds better.
I'm pretty sure my laptop has both.
I do have HDMI, for sure.
18:09
Unlikely
machines have one, or the other, I have never seen both
@rolfl My MacBook Pro has two Thunderbolt ports and an HDMI.
So yes, it has both.
how many display ports?
Thunderbolt ports are mDP.
So, two of those.
@rolfl higher than x sites?
@SimonAndréForsberg all but 12, I think
That's in total for all their elections.
18:11
@ChrisJester-Young I don't think I even have a DP cable though
I think the 1000 people to visit election page for 1 election is higher than all but about 9 sites.
3
@skiwi The Dell P2415Q I got comes with an mDP cable.
My laptop was bought from university in an interesting deal, so no box or anything, just a backpack with stuff
@skiwi I figured if you're buying an adaptor you'd also get a cable.
Uh, I think over at TCG Creation we just got a build notification from Travis CI that a build passed that was scheduled to be run at 13 October 2014
@ChrisJester-Young Hmm I'm confused, don't monitors usually have a cable attached to them? (In this case an HDMI cable)
18:14
@skiwi True, if you already have a preexisting HDMI cable, then use that.
I could alternatively also check if there's a VGA <-> HDMI converter around
@skiwi Ewwwww. No digital-to-analogue-to-digital conversions, please.
Ugly, huh?
@rolfl Wow, really?
