@EthanBierlein Guilty pleasures, right? ;-)

Oh yah. I beat Q to it, which is a surprise.

Is he still doing answers?

@EthanBierlein Speaking of Q, I haven't seen him around. Where did he go?

12:08 AM
He stopped coming to chat.

Why's that?

@SirPython He left with the scuffle that happened in here a little while ago

@SirPython Mad about being called a seagull or something.

Oh.

It's been like a week. I'm honestly a little worried.

Q: How much idle chatter do we tolerate in The 2nd Monitor?

MastRelated but not a duplicate: How far off-topic can we get in 'the 2nd monitor'? Today was a complicated day in the history of The 2nd Monitor. On one side there appears to be consensus something went wrong which should be handled. On the other side there appears to be disagreement about how muc...

@Quill Yes, I was there for the whole thing. I just wasn't there for the aftermath.
I only saw Rubberduck leave.

@SirPython Ducky didn't fully leave chat like Q did. You can still find him in the Rubberduck VBA room. He still seems to be active on the site too.

Good. I thought Rubberduck completely left CR.

Nah. He just said that he'd be a lot less active. I'm sure that in a month or two most things will be back to normal.

12:25 AM
Objective-C is so freaking wierd

Yeah, one should always use Swift

Meh. I want to learn Obj-C anyways. Then I might learn swift.
For some reason I just don't like something about swift.
Probably because I don't like a certain pop artist with that name.

She's in a fight with Apple, actually, about artists not getting paid for the first three months of their listing on the iTunes Store

Hope she wins.

Not that she needs the money, but, yeah

12:30 AM
I hope Amazon loses their book monopoly lawsuit, too.

If you decided to list on the iTunes Store before you released your album, you could just push it back or something
@Hosch250 and Apple's book fixing prices lawsuit

Yup.

@EthanBierlein Apple should have a 'Objective-C reference guide' or something on the iBooks store, I read most of the Swift one, and it was really good

Yeah.
Hmm. I think I'm going to re-work my Java Vector class in Obj-C from on of my previous questions.

anyone think this is a bad SO answer? --> stackoverflow.com/a/31236397/1214743
I did the exact same thing. you would think it would work from the views web.config though

12:40 AM
@Malachi I made a suggested edit, if you include the message, you should be right

@Quill thank you
I approved it

anybody who can help me on this query on java interface. am stuck here

@Malachi no problem

Google doesn't like the security of my app I guess....in other words I have a different issue....lol

@Malachi, you beat me to the Programmers.SE edit by like 10 seconds :P

12:45 AM
@Quill me and @Jamal had a pretty good race going in the early days of the Revival
lol
@Quill I am number 5 all time. and I don't edit near as much as I used to otherwise I would be closer to the other 4 --> codereview.stackexchange.com/users?tab=Editors&filter=all

I'm 15 on that list, also yeah, good luck touching Jamal's figure

@Quill he gets like 1k easy in a week

I should really step up my editing, get the copy editor badge

I am not usually online on the weekends either. but that is going to change I am going to start coding more on my websites so I can make some bucks and stay home with my family

That sounds really cool

12:51 AM
@Quill Star-greed.

@Hosch250 I didn't even notice ;-)

I'm just over half way, and I don't need to get edits approved, so I can do couple-char grammar-fixing edits, but Jamal usually beats me.
I guess he doesn't have enough flags to handle ;)
Crap, I just flagged some comments that probably shouldn't have been.

The top two on that thread are obsolete by themselves, but the first is tied to the two below, which is a valid discussion.

I had to tone down the security on the Email address I am using for my NoReply address. Google is Strict, I like it.

Q: Graph, and a search that visits each edge exactly once in each direction

CarcigenicateMy assignment was to write a method that is capable of visiting each edge in a graph in each direction exactly once. With it, I included a basic Graph class to test it with. lol. My objective-c program is almost done
It'll be up for review in about 20 minutes.

@EthanBierlein I haven't done Obj-C in a long time besides the answer I did yesterday, but I'll try my best to review it :-)

2:10 AM
Ah I see. I'll take jpw's advice and try posting the question on the Code Review site :P — Gary Feng 5 secs ago

@GaryFeng Keep in mind that they will give feedback regarding your code style/quality/whatever, but they won´t be very interested in the algorithmic part. If you want to learn faster algos, the CompSci site or Math may be more suitable (or even Cryptography) — deviantfan 51 secs ago
is that so?

@Mat'sMug He doesn't even have a CR profile and used a backtick instead of an apostrophe. Shows what he knows.

Q: Project Euler #3 (C++)

Gary FengI wrote a code to solve this question and I was wondering if it was efficient or not. I swear to god. Objective-C is the most frustrating language ever conceived.
I can't set the value of a property inside of an implementation.

36 mins ago, by Quill
@EthanBierlein Then swap to Swift

No
Not yet
Would anyone know how to do that?

 NSFrustratedPerson *EthanBierlein = [[NSFrustratedPerson alloc] init];
@EthanBierlein nhgrif would, probably

2:22 AM
@nhgrif How do you set the value of a property inside an implementation?

See below:

@deviantfan, improving your algorithm is an on-topic post on Code Review, so long as it contains working code, demonstrating that algorithm. If your query is purely algorithmic, Math.SE may be the site for you, however, I am unfamiliar with their on-topic policies. — Quill 27 secs ago

Post your code to chat ethan

Just a sec. I want to try something.

in this question, wouldn't it be better to have a logical and?
i keep thinking i'm missing something

2:35 AM
@bazola Okay, here's the code
#import <Foundation/Foundation.h>

/**
 * The interface for the object
 * Vector2D.
 * @property x - The x position of the vector.
 * @property y - The y position of the vector.
 */
@interface Vector2D : NSObject
	@property (nonatomic) float x;
	@property (nonatomic) float y;

	- (void)setX :(float) value;
	- (void)setY :(float) value;

	- (void)add
		:(float) xAmount
		:(float) yAmount;

	- (void)subtract
		:(float) xAmount
		:(float) yAmount;

	- (void)multiply
		:(float) xAmount
		:(float) yAmount;

Looking now
What property can't you set

Neither
Here's the runtime error
Uncaught exception NSInvalidArgumentException, reason: (Vector2D)instance does not recognize setX:

You haven't implemented the set method

How do I do that?

You could try removing the set declaration from the header and use the automatic one

2:40 AM
@bazola Hmm. Where's the set declaration? (sorry. Really new to this.)

@deviantfan You'd be a most welcome reviewer then! Hop aboard, share your knowledge! We need more answerers like you! That link only meant to say "nope. not just code style/quality/whatever." - but yeah, people (including myself) will usually pick on the "easy" in-your-face stuff first. If you submit code for review that's poorly indented, with poor naming and no apparent coding style convention, odds are you'll get feedback on that before anything else. Someone that doesn't want that kind of feedback should post a question with their cleanest code, without those blatant issues. — Mat's Mug 43 secs ago

Ican Reprot You Ezawow it seems to be very inefficient as it uses many lines. I prefer the more efficient method called google.

2:59 AM
@Jamal LOL, how do they think Google calculates it?
I got Marshal!

Nice work!

Yeah, for sure, thanks for the queries
Is there a daily limit on flags?

Sort of.
There is a lower limit at first, but it gets higher the more flags you have marked valid.
I don't remember the start, 10-20, or something.
I have 63 now, and Simon has over 80.

Damn, I am going to start off low.... the mods are going to dislike me soon enough ;-0

3:04 AM
@rolfl You helped me, I'll help you.
That is, if I get elected.

hehehe
It will take some adjusting not having the "delete" hammer

You can still vote to delete, which is something I won't have until I get 20k.

Even without the diamond, @rolfl, you'll still have weight

At least you can still flag comments. ;-) If I win the election, I may never earn Marshal.

My parents immigrate on Wednesday ... I pick them up from the airport..... I won't be seeing the monitor, the ask a question, or the answer a question for a while either....

3:06 AM
@rolfl As mentioned elsewhere, I still haz a sadface about that. I will miss seeing the diamond next to your name. :-)

@Jamal You'll win.
Isn't the win rate for pro-tem mods in the 90 percentile, or something?

@Jamal See, the thing is, we have Constable.... and, now it will never be earned by anyone else.....

^^

Hello, @ChrisJester-Young, I remember you from PPCG!

I have no idea. But if you're right, then I won't need to stuff the ballot boxes after all. :P

@Hosch250 Yes, I was a Code Golf mod for 4 years, then I became a SE employee. :-)

@Hosch250 shhhhhh! from PPCG the site that shall not be named

@rolfl You earned it (but it is a little disappointing not being able to get every badge).

lol

@Mat'sMug ;-)

I can earn marshall in time, and I expect I will volunteer again for mod, and maybe get Sheriff at some point too.
@Hosch250 You want unsung hero?

@rolfl Sure, but I don't even know how.

@Hosch250 You want Peer Pressure?

@Hosch250 Anyway, I remember you too. So I'll read your election statement doubly hard. :-)

Yup, the question here is clearly not "does it make my ass look fat", but "does it work" (see this meta answer : meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/138/… ) — Riduidel Jan 28 '11 at 15:04

@Jamal Hmm. Probably don't have much of a chance if that's the case. :D

So, 86.66666...%

@rolfl LOL

3:13 AM
@rolfl It's just a strange comment I found in @Hosch250's query

@Hosch250 And perhaps 200 and I will help increase that percentage.
"Does my ass look correct?"

^^ trick question, don't answer!

Now, can we be a bit more polite here?

Jeff Attwood started this, he can finish it too

Apparently rains on parade.
@rolfl OK, IIRC, he is the one who told SO to use the polite form of BF.

3:15 AM
@Jamal of course you two will. and that means the rest of us are really running for 2 open spots

@Hosch250 Let's please

preliminaries are going to be fun

@Mat'sMug they will be useful

Good post @Quill, and you were right to link my chat post there, I recognize now it didn't belong in our beloved 2nd Monitor :) — Phrancis 5 mins ago
@Phrancis, thanks and to be fair, I thought it was hilarious.

@rolfl yes. I really wonder where I stand

3:17 AM
Me too.

I've seen 2 predictions today involving me

Suspects I'll either get elected or get kicked in primary.

@Mat'sMug I have consciously decided not to make comments on how I think about the individuals in these elections.

I suppose everyone will receive some downvotes, too. I'm not sure if any candidate has ever gotten nothing but upvotes.

@Quill Yeah, you should've seen them jump up! I remembered why I prefer this place to Facebook by orders of magnitude.

3:19 AM
@rolfl sorry if that came across as if I were asking you - I was really just thinking out loud here

@Jamal I suspect I'll have constant negative score

@rolfl Me, too. I just asked a few questions. I may stay out of the candidate questions as well (commenting on others, I mean).

@Mat'sMug No problem, I don't know if it is the right decision, though... I have had to catch myself a few times.

@Quill I doubt it. You would have to be an obvious troll to get something like that.

@Jamal I put the few things i think are hardest to do as a Code Review mod up as candidate questions.

3:20 AM
Hmm, perhaps, maybe just low score then

@rolfl all I saw you say was that there are many deserving candidates; nothing specific about any of them

@rolfl Suggest questions instead of conducting them, good idea

That chat question. Ugh. I'll have to think about that one a bit.

Chat is without doubt, the most risky thing to mod.

yes

3:22 AM
(I would have said that last week too, not just because of these recent things - my mod question was posted last week too).

@mods Say, when someone flags a chat post, you get to see who, right?

Q: Barnes-Hut N-body simulator

Kieren PearsonBig ask, but I am a amateur programmer, and I believe the hardest thing to improving is not having much guidance as to what I'm doing right and wrong, and I fear of getting bad habits. Here is my code for a n-body simulator I have made, implementing the Barnes-Hut algorithm. If its not to much to...

@Quill Yes, but there's no history... only the first-responders see.

I think the recent events (/crisis) are going to go down as a Good Thing afterall.

@rolfl Does it ever surprise you who flags what?

3:23 AM
@CaptainObvious Whoa, that main.cpp is a monster

@rolfl I am glad that my performance last week didn't escalate anything. I have never actually moderated chat before that.

@Mat'sMug Apart from RubberDuck, and nhgrif, which caught me by surprise (both of them), I am cautiously optimistic that people have got the message that chat is not a toy, it's a tool.

The idea that we're anonymous between ourselves, but the Mods know who, very interesting concept, I think

@Mat'sMug TM

lol

3:25 AM
Perhaps to some, but we lost a few users in the process

I feel sure they will be back, in time

@Quill I don't think so, not in the long run,

is Captain Obvious not a bot?

@MotokoKusanagi A feed.

It is a feed, to be exact

3:26 AM
@MotokoKusanagi Stack Exchange feed

ok thanks

But @Duga is a bot

i'm not well versed in a lot of terminology

Thanks, I'm a little scared of a down vote backlash, Ive seen questions over on stack overflow that just dump all there code and ask for help get down voted to oblivion, But i'm guessing a question of this fashion is appropriate here? — Kieren Pearson 1 min ago

3:27 AM
Bots just post through the chat.
(Duh.)

^^ show some CR love ;)

@MotokoKusanagi The feeds come from the RSS feeds that are available on Stack Exchange. We have a few set up, there's new questions posted (by captain obvious), then there's a feed of all meta-site questions. There's feeds for some rare code-review questions on Stack Overflow.

In addition, we have some other ones like feeds on some twitter users (@StackExchange), the latest XKCD posts, etc.
Finally, there is a "real bot" called @Duga, which posts references to Code Review made from comments in Stack Overflow.

BBL.

oh wow i had no idea

People who frequent this room get a good feel for where Code Review is "happening".

that's pretty neat

What's up with this question, somebody flagged it as 'Analysis of characteristics', The final line kinda ruins the on-topicness

@MotokoKusanagi Just curious, but you are aware that SciFi.SE is listed as your primary profile?

not until just now
i don't really look at profiles, even mine
maybe if i'm bored

3:33 AM
@Phrancis only for chat.

Hey, since when am I a room owner here? (just noticed that)

@Phrancis A bunch of people are now.... since the melt-down a few days ago

Ah ok

@rolfl Why though?

Jul 2 at 12:22, by nhgrif
If at any point in time rolfl is removed as a room owner here, feel free to invite me back here.
Jul 2 at 12:24, by Stack Exchange
rolfl has removed rolfl from the list of this room's owners.

3:36 AM
I missed the episode, but saw the posts on Meta. Kind of glad I was away while it was happening.

@rolfl I also considered hara-kiri'ing like that after posting my answer on that meta

@Phrancis There is no way that I can see to "appoint" room owners that is fair, and won't upset someone.... I had discussed that with the other mods a few weeks ago, and we threw around a few ideas.

Q: Type Validation using State Monad

Rob KleffnerI am attempting to build a compiler for a stack-based (or concatenative) programming language in Haskell. I figured the best I could do (weeks ago), was to leave thigns alone, but I also had suggested that the "frequently in" people of this room would all be decent candidates.

I haven't heard anyone complain

3:39 AM
Anyway, it seemed appropriate, at the time, noone has complained (except Rubberduck, who removed his own ownership), and there have been no repurcussions further.
So, the frequently-in folk at that time, got "appointed".

@rolfl Isn't that the truth for pretty much all human interaction, though? No matter which way the wind blows, someone's feathers are going to get flustered...

The list has changed since then, but that's OK.
seems the list is more fickle than I thought

We've had a silent lurker in our TCG/Cardshifter room for a while... never seen them say a thing... and main profile is on RPG.SE

@Phrancis Nothing visible to me that raises any alarms

I know, it's just odd... like, how did they find us? lol

it is a lot easier to join a room than leave.

People think I am "always here", but the truth is, I have a linux box with chrome....
My kids have their own accounts, and they're normally the ones on the comuter.... but chrome sits in the background keeping my chat socket open.

There is always the "leave" button.

@Hosch250 SACRILEGE!
