3:01 PM
brb meeting

I'm so glad I didn't go to work today

user92578
So should I allow both keyboard and controller keys to be bind to a single player, should I make the user choose one? What I'm concerned with is multiplayer support

Lol @SpartanDonut, weren't you saying Friday came quickly just like..... 5 minutes ago O.o

Hmm
I'd say, in singleplayer, listen to both keyboard and controller, in multiplayer, each of them only moves one character
That way you can also switch easily
If you do it properly it be barely any extra code actually

3:07 PM
@Tyyppi_77 I think you should put both devices into one pool, then let each player pull from the same pool of available input actions. I am a custom keybind zealot.

(In multiplayer, just set the target of the input handlers to different characters)

@Tyyppi_77 Allow people to do whatever they want. They're the users afterall.
If they have a funky gamepad/keyboard combination they like, there's really no point in not letting them do so.

More options for the user is literally never a bad thing.

Exposing more options to them can be, though

Well unless you have so many it's incomprehensible I guess.

3:08 PM
offer plugins for all the available types of configurations--and sell them via microtransactions.

@GnomeSlice This only applies to exposing more options

Isn't that the same thing?

Not really, you can have basically unlimited hidden console commands

Jon
unlimited.

Preach.

3:11 PM
@MickLH lol... uhhhhh... yes.
That said I love the weekends
The less responsibility I have the better and it just so happens I have less responsibilities between Friday and Monday

I wish I had noticed last weekend before it disappeared

Jon
i love weekends too man.

I work all weekend.
Every weekend.

With a fully-configurable system, would it be possible to dynamically select the number of players? That is, if you lock a player to a given device, you can watch for input from that device and say, "This device has shown interest in playing this round"

Stupid commodity job

Jon
3:12 PM
i didn't work a lot this weekend.. although i get paid ot
there was a massive issue with the testing servers

@TreDubZedd if you program it too =p

Jon
still a problem right now-- low memory

@KevinvanderVelden Ok, what would the logic look like?

Jon
can't start all my app pools
if device input triggers { send interest }

Yeah, that @Jon

Jon
3:15 PM
think about it

Kind of creepy lol
Reminds me... I need to watch Birdman again
It was really good drunk. I have this feeling it might have been boring though xD

Jon
so hardware is about to change because of windows 10 apparently

Uugh, it's beginning to sound like another EEE attempt, let's hope not

only if motherboard manufacturers see it as beneficial to be locked to Windows10...which isn't likely to happen

Right

3:22 PM
Well no, the real question is: Do they find the cost of adding a feature to disable the check worth it?

Jon
I don't see this taking off

The only "benefit" is if they don't want to be bothered with supporting another OS

existing BIOSes already have that switch. It'll likely cost more to remove it

Joe
in our foreseeable future "get a win 10 mobo 99.99" or buy the "unlocked verison 149.99" YAAY

Jon
They are also putting in biometric security

3:23 PM
also, the switch almost certainly must exist for testing

Jon
as a authentication system .. which is bad.
biometric should only be used for identification
not authentication

...so to remove it conditionally for production is also more costly than just leaving it.

@TreDubZedd well, yes. For existing BIOSes, not for new ones, though this is all speculation

Jon
it is also possible it will be done only on their portable devices
and not desktop
which would make a lot of sense.

@TreDubZedd naah, disabling the check is probably a simple "return true;" added in the code if it's a debug build, that's different from an option

Jon
3:25 PM
also, who issues the security codes if you wanted to build a custom OS?

If this takes off (locking BIOS), we can certainly expect to see hacked BIOS installers within weeks.

Jon
^
you can flash a bios right on your board now
so all you need is a hacked rom really
but that would be difficult to produce
in the sense that every motherboard is different.

not more difficult, necessarily, than the various bootleg media of the past

Eeh I'd think it would probably be more difficult
I mean, for one thing, you'd need one per motherboard

...per motherboard that's locked down, anyway.

Jon
3:27 PM
yeah this would become a nightmare issue

@KevinvanderVelden The real, real question: Is the cost of adding the feature to disable the check more expensive than the marketing value of an "unlocked" board.

Jon
but even for the security... if files are tampered, your os doesn't boot
is that really a good thing?

Of course not, it's obviously not a real attempt at security
Physical access = r00tsauce

Thumper looks really good. I want it NOW!

3:29 PM
Yes and no; from a pure security standpoint, yes. From any other standpoint: No.

@Lokkij i love shit like that
PS4 version?

@KevinvanderVelden Even from a security standpoint it's bad because then you can not create hotfix patches in-house to respond to top level security issues.

It's on 'whatever platform makes sense'

@Lokkij Yesssss I love these visuals

PS4 makes the most sense. Followed closely by PS3, then PC/Mac, then Linux.

3:31 PM
It really did feel like Rhythm Violence

Unless OEMs flood the market at the same time, it won't make it too difficult for hackers to really worry about...

I hope Thumper's gameplay can survive the HDTV latency problem.
looks like it wants a big screen and my computer monitor (with low latency) is not large

I want those photons in my eye hole
Maybe a VR headset would be nice, to enhance the insane contrast effect

Ooh VR would be pretty crazy

:|

3:34 PM
VR would be horrible
Hey @Noctrine, you missed all the fun of the flag wars

That's why the :|

Yeah
'T was fun

I think nobody knows how VR would be without trying it

I hope you're not offended that I don't blindly accept your dismissive and unproductive claims, @KevinvanderVelden, I just would prefer to think about how things could be positive.

3:37 PM
The VR wouldn't have to be full motion tracking or anything... just something to cover your peripheral vision

That looks like a fun concept, I think it could be good if it were refined

It reminds me of Frozen Synapse.
With a much different theme, and potentially more RPG elements.

Yeah Frozen Synapse immediately comes to mind

I liked Frozen Synapse
but I was no good at it
things never went to plan

Jon
try to beat that level

user92578
no reset button?

should this compile? ideone.com/AWG6sL

Jon
it will auto reset after 5 seconds

@Veritas no parameters in int main, some compilers allow it

3:52 PM
@Jon how do I eat the blocks

Jon
ctrl/shift
left
or mouse buttons
or controller buttons
they should all work
you have to be touching them

my controller doesn't do anything
also how do you get rid of the blocks
nvm it works I just didn't have focus

Focus @GnomeSlice! Focus! =p

Jon
hehe
fun enough to make it into a game?

3:55 PM
yeah go for it

Jon
if you press down you can charge a jump too

user92578
that already is a game

@KevinvanderVelden what do you mean? this is allowed in c++. I was talking about using new with a non-const variable.
well constexpr

@Veritas I've had a compiler reject that, don't remember which one though
But, what's the point of new if you can't allocate arbitrary number of objects?

3:59 PM
pff I haven't used new in so much time that I forgot the basics
being ill sucks, I can't reason correctly for many things.

Jon
ok, so you are roundy, and you woke up in this weird square world
And you must figure out what the hell is going on

4:29 PM
Le sigh

I didn't know that was a mod superpower. That's pretty cool.

So, anyone know how to initialize a Python object from a existing pointer via the Python C API?

@Veritas might have to run an idea by you later
if you're free

@TreDubZedd room owner superpower I think even
The bridge generally sends stuff to "Android Hell", except the one time @fredley send it to "Android Enthusiasts", woops.

also I have no idea why but I think that windows 10 breaks mono's threading code
can't get any terrain to display since changing the dictionary types

4:32 PM
@KevinvanderVelden shhhhhh

@fredley you will never live it down =p

user92578
@KevinvanderVelden what is?

@Tyyppi_77 moving messages to another room

@TreDubZedd most mod powers are cool

agreed, @fredley, I just hadn't seen that particular one before

4:34 PM
But the messes you have to clean up =[

...still, needs more lense-flare

user92578
and do Josh's removed messages have something to do with that?

@KevinvanderVelden Yeah. The jobs the tools are for are not cool

@Tyyppi_77 yes

user4704
My favorite is the mod-only "order beer and pizza" button.

user4704
4:35 PM
I saw in the latest mod newsletter that SE is teaming up with Amazon's new drone department for deliveries in the future.

I work basically next door to the SE offices. Delivery is very quick.

@JoshPetrie You're gonna need more buttons.

@fredley they have offices in london? Or is that also part of the joke

@KevinvanderVelden They do indeed

Cool, did not know

4:37 PM
So, cool stuff that a friend of mine is working on. Check it out.

@Noctrine weird
but v cool
hmmm

4:53 PM
SERIOUSLY!!!
that's mind blowing!

It's 10x bigger than a Skyrim level.

Let me guess, World Composition?

@SpartanDonut its also not procedural
shame

UE4 doesn't do procedural terrain, IIRC. At least not without messing with the actual engine code.

that's my point

5:07 PM
Does anything?
@Wardy Weird but cool is how I would sum up most of his game ideas, which is part of why I'm excited. Usually not same-y experiences.

Well, I'm pretty sure some engines do. Unity lets you create meshes programmatically, at least (not so much terrain patches, but then its terrain system didn't change from Unity 4).
Non-procedural streaming terrain of close to infinite size (with moving the origin for precision) is still pretty sexy, especially as you can create huge swaths of it easily from real-world data and a script cutting it apart with gdal_translate or similar tools.

there is always something to nitpick about any game engine. That's why other engines get made.

Oh yeah, I'm super excited about this.

Hello

user4704
5:16 PM
Hi,

Are the "GPU Pro" book series hard for a computer graphics newbie? (but with math background)

user92578
@Jon what's the point?

Jon
a game presentation gone wrong i guess

user92578
that's a horrible game

No idea, but I liked the Arcsynthesis book
Which is also free

user92578
5:20 PM
Like has he made the game?

user92578
OH GOD THE JESUS MUPPET

user92578
or somthing

Jon
yea
it is pretty strange

user92578
oh its a game by a student

user4704
@Nickolas "Hard" is subjective, but they appear to be basically cookbook-style books.

user4704
5:26 PM
Why are you looking at them?

@JoshPetrie I'm a math student with an interest in computer graphics and I'm looking to "establish" a theoretical foundation, not just learn openGL or something similar

user92578
the guy is so fucking frustrated

user92578
"DO NOT PICK UP THE ORB"

Jon
lol
i just found a very very weird video
so apparently you can buy a lifelike silicone baby

@Jon yeah I've seen a TV program about that, it's quite creepy

5:31 PM
@Jon I've got acquaintances who "build" babies like that

user92578
OMG HE FUCKING DROPPED THE COMPUTER

Jon
what the hell who buys that and why?

user92578
at 29:00

Mostly, from what I can tell, it's parents who have lost their own child. The "doll" is often built to look very similar
...a way to remember/find closure

yeah that was a common reason

Jon
5:33 PM
i don't think it is a good way to help find closure

Agreed...but, then, I'm not a psychologist
There is evidently quite a community built around those things--the artists have conventions, etc.

user92578
is it framed?

So... I should probably watch the video from the beginning to actually understand wtf that was about

user92578
IT WAS A FRAME I DIDNT WATCH IT FROM THE START

Bad @Jon

5:50 PM
@MartinSojka you could still pre generate the terrain using say a noise module stack then save the results
the down side of course is that games will be massive and they need not be

user4704
@Nickolas Those books probably won't be good for that.

if the unreal engine had that process built in that you could just plug in a noise function for the data and it would all happen at runtime I would be genuinely impressed

Are printers programmed to break down?

Jon
yes.

@AidanMueller yes by naff firmware engineers

5:56 PM
I am actually thinking about making an open source printer.
It's insane when it costs less to buy a new printer that includes ink.

been done i believe

@Wardy This doesn't look that useable though:

the average life of a typical printer is only about 2 to 3 years anyway

I like to be paperless.

Jon
paperless all the way
printers are for assholes

5:57 PM
@AidanMueller hey its open source though right!!

I guess it's a start.

can prob do it with a rpi or something

There is a way to reset the progress of the cartridges on my printer. If it tells you that it's empty, you can reset it and you get tons more life out of it.

thats normal for just about every printer
