I see that JBJ has just outed himself as a non-Canadian, eh.
I sure hope he didn’t learn his English in Alabama.
I would bet anything that Rob and Kit also have Canadian Rising the way I do; dunno about anybody else.

I do sometimes.
If you have something you want me to read to demonstrate my accent, I will.

I was only talking about the common /aɪ/ > [ʌɪ] version that happens before unvoiced consontants, not the one that affects /aʊ/.
@skullpatrol Yes.
I am always leaving ou a letter there.
You raise the /aɪ/ into [ʌɪ] in certain cases, as the article spells out.
Virtually no one untrained in phonology even notices this, but it is very present.
It does not happen in the Deep South, where that diphthong suffers monophthongization. That’s why I mentioned Alabama.

you speak in deep riddles

Eh?
No gnomic utterances have I today proclaimed.
At least, not intentionally.

2:26 PM
Ha! So you admit you do it intentionally at times. I knew it!

@skullpatrol someone at EL&U removed the

Wasn't that JSB?

2:29 PM
I think it was Sim

I met him when he tagged my question with it.

JSB added it, IIRC

As a joke.

@MattЭллен there is a relationship.SE, no?

[relationships.se]
no

2:30 PM
There was a Sexuality proposal or something.

I think one was proposed

@MattЭллен Ouch, talk about "Primarily opinion based".

Currently in definition.

2:32 PM
@KitFox hmmm
all three of these are interesting proposals but should probably be merged
the question is, if you allowed sex on the Relationship SE, would it come to be the sole topic?

none will make it

@JSBձոգչ I should prefer that the third one have certain matters of orthography attended to first.

I don't see any of them working on the SE model. Bar certain extreme cases "My lover keeps beating me with a saucepan, is that normal?", all questions will have multiple correct answer and be subjective by definition.

Still, those just seem impossible: you cannot get a “right” answer about matters of the heart.
jinx

2:33 PM
Yeah, but it sure is titillating.
Anyway, there is a parenting site, so there ought to be equal grounds for other stuff.

@tchrist that hasn't stopped other SE sites from working
it would be a sticky topic, though

@KitFox isn't that snapshat?

Hot Topic is an American retail chain specializing in music and pop culture-related clothing and accessories, as well as licensed music. That's the one I was looking for.

A: "Yes. I beat mine with a saucepan all the time"
A: "No. Being beaten with a saucepan is not healthy"
A: "Yes. I like being beaten with a sauce pan"
A: "No. You've confused 50 shades of grey with BSDM"
A: "It depends on the type of suace pan"
A: "Maybe you should try a whip or crop"

@KitFox You mean the titillation of beer goggles after midnight, or delayed-onset puberty?

2:37 PM
It had delightful questions like "Warming a Tenga Masturbator"

@MattЭллен lol. You forgot "No, they should use a pressure cooker instead".

@KitFox Well, OK, that one can have perfectly non-subjective answers.

a sex toy that collapses when you pull out?
oh, that's a T not a J

@terdon I should rather think ten would be more appropriate than tenga is matters masturbatory. I don’t normally say sir or ma’am when discussing these things outside of brothren.

Oh.
@MattЭллен hahaha
I found a YouTube video that will probably get me fired.

that^ is for me :D

@KitFox I found a wikipedia entry, much safer.

Well.
You can download a data dump of the questions on the site, if you are interested.

@KitFox Oh, I thought it was ours.

2:43 PM
No, from the Sexuality site.

what about the youtube vid?

@skullpatrol You can go look yourself.

no hints?

go to youtube and search for Tenga masturbator.
It's not rocket science.

2:45 PM
oh that, nvm
i prefer rocket surgery :-)

I wonder why those betas were closed so quickly. Neither one was open for more than two weeks.

@KitFox Just looks like one huh?

apparently "just throw it in the bin" isn't the right response

@KitFox Friends at work?

hi @cornbreadninja麵包忍者

RIP Johnny Winter.

3:03 PM
@AndrewLeach just the friends. every one else at work can just suck it.

It's dirty in here today.

@MattЭллен right. what do you do when the garbage can is already full of bombs? You don't just put the last one on top.

@Mitch oh. I guess I need that class too, then

@AndrewLeach I guess they must be visiting?

you should all be chatting about the blog

 EL&U Blog

Discussion for the EL&U Blog. For more info see meta.english.s...
in the blog chat room

@MattЭллен I'm busy trying out a virtual suit and writing unit tests.

@JohanLarsson that sounds almost as important as chatting about he blog

The tests indicate that I was not writing bug free code earlier.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 that guy has a serious chin

3:20 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I would suspect that as volume goes up, quality goes down.

@MattЭллен I learned my lesson. When the cat gets into that, what a mess.

@MattЭллен I've been chatting about it to myself. Does that count?

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 "... is proud of his work highlighting towns in the Philippines. "

@Robusto no. you should chat about it with the rest of us, in the chat room

@JohanLarsson To me, this would be evidence that the tests are flawed.
@MattЭллен Will there be cupcakes?

3:23 PM
@MattЭллен why are you talking about it here? You're wasting valuable finger movement!
@Robusto The cake is lie.

@Robusto I know

@Robusto if you bring some there will be...

@Mitch Not always true.
@MattЭллен If I bring some I could chat about the blog all by myself and still have cupcakes.

Sometimes there's cake. Sometimes the truth is a lie.

3:29 PM
hi @Zoe

Zoe
@skullpatrol Haha, hello skull!
Was just wondering what the cake is all about

@Zoe how are you?

Zoe
And of course, gonna watch some GoT.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 True of everything but rock music, I suspect.

Zoe
@skullpatrol I'm good. My brain is tired from a long day's work.

3:30 PM
icic

@Zoe Free cupcakes in ELU Blog chat (disclaimer: you have to provide the cupcakes).

Zoe
@Robusto Then, it really isn't free, is it.

@Zoe Ask @MattЭллен. He's the one who made the condition.

there is no such thing as a free lunch

Zoe
3:31 PM
@skullpatrol Well, if you count cupcakes as a valid lunch substitute.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 "As volume goes up . . ."

@Robusto You'll have to speak up. I'm wearing a towel.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I can't see you. You're wearing a towel.

@Robusto Oh, my bad.

@Zoe The cornerstone of any nutritious lunch.

Zoe
3:32 PM
let's have a food p(o)u(r)n contest.

That's bananas.

Zoe
Don't be shellfish.

Okay, it's also nuts.

whoah. one of my good (female) friends in college is now having a baby. she was one of those people who swore up and down she would NEVER have kids.

Bananas => b + ananas => B-list non-native speakers

3:34 PM
@JSBձոգչ Oh dear.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 she obviously changed her mind.

@JSBձոգչ Sure. Or got pregnant.

@JSBձոգչ You felt obliged to point out that your baby-having friend is female, did you?

If only the will to never bear children were effective birth control.

Zoe
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Unknowingly.

3:34 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 eh, she's married and happily talking about it on facebook. no reason to think it's an accident.

Zoe
@Robusto LOl
@JSBձոգչ Ah.
RECOMMEND ME A SHOW

@Zoe Turn the volume down.

@Robusto science does wonders these days

@Zoe You've seen Breaking Bad, I presume.

Zoe
@Robusto No, but not interested in Breaking Bad.

3:36 PM
@JSBձոգչ That would be more of a monstrosity than a wonder.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Oh, I didn't read your cards a second time.

what are you interested in?

@Zoe Then either I can't help you or you can't be helped.

Zoe
I've watched House, NCIS, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Nurse Jackie, etc

@JSBձոգչ GoT.

Zoe
3:36 PM
@Robusto AHHH

@Zoe Wilfred.

@KitFox You gonna?

@Zoe Chuck

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I can't right now. Remind me later.
I have a hot date with my husband.

Zoe
Do ya'll think The Tomorrow People is worth watching? I like a good Mark Pellegrino.

3:37 PM
@KitFox oooh

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 That doesn't work for men, either, btw.

Zoe
@KitFox Let me check that out.
@KitFox Urgh comedy, it's a pass.

Supernatural isn't comedy?
How about Law & Order? Classic.

@Zoe then you won't like Chuck either

The Mentalist. Oh, Bones.

3:39 PM
@Zoe my wife and I like Bones and are currently working through Numb3rs

Taken

@Zoe oh, White Collar. that's a great one

That was a good series.

@JSBձոգչ Wait, Chuck is a comedy? I thought it was a riveting spy drama.

@Robusto you've seen it, right?

Zoe
3:39 PM
@JSBձոգչ OH! I've watched White Collar and have the new season on my phone.

@KitFox it's Thursday morning.

Zoe
@JSBձոգչ Yep

@JSBձոգչ Of course. Hence my joke.

Zoe
@JSBձոգչ I'll check em out too

sigh

3:40 PM
@Robusto humor detector must be broken, sorry

@Zoe There's no cake; it's all gone. It was realy good.

Zoe
@JSBձոգչ Well, if cokeandpopcorn.ch/tvsection.php doesn't have Numb3rs though

It's funny only because my roommate at Stanford was named Bryce Larkin.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Lunch.

Zoe
@Mitch Well, it don't matter. It wasn't really free anyways.

3:41 PM
@Robusto that is funny
@Zoe 24 if you like action and a little torture

@Zoe That cake was totally free. Made it taste that much better.
I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast but I like hot butter on my breakfast toast.

@Zoe Downton Abbey if you like drama and beautiful costumes

@KitFox You're sharing lasagna?

Zoe
@JSBձոգչ I don't trust Police Procedurals. I liked NCIS because it was character-centric and had really good backstory for Gibbs. I will check out 24.

Let's see, what's for lunch: ribs, chili, burgers, fries, cupcakes, ice cream? No. Vegetables.

3:42 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Going to the Thai place.

@Zoe 24 isn't a procedural, it's more of a thriller

Zoe
I am real picky with my shows I see.

@JSBձոգչ Soap. Don't forget the soap.

@Mitch Yeah, toast!

3:43 PM
@KitFox naw man, turn that baby up.

Off to lunch. Bye!

to eleven! ... aw snap, I missed elevenses.

@JSBձոգչ Am I the only one who wanted to give Bates a gigantic wedgie?

Zoe
@JSBձոգչ Are you kidding me, 24 episodes of ONE DAY. And 9 seasons of 9 days..... uh pass lol, is that show even possible?!

@Robusto yes. no.
@Zoe they are very exciting days. They generally involve lots of killing and blowing up.

Zoe
3:45 PM
@JSBձոգչ :O Does it have good story line?

@Zoe yes? honestly i didn't love 24, but it seems like it fits in with the rest of the things you mentioned.

@JSBձոգչ I expect realism... I expect bathroom breaks... I expect lots of sleep deprived perspiration sheen delirium

@Mitch there are multiple characters, so when one goes to the loo they cut away to somebody else who is busy rapelling down an exploding skyscraper or something

@KitFox another: you can try... to understand... the New York Times affect on man.

Zoe
@JSBձոգչ Well, the shows that I mentioned does have the blood and gore but they have like one or two themed storyline and heavy character backstory and emotional. I like that kinda shows. It's like emotional drug.
I mean, Game Of Thrones is hard to keep up with, very heavy on the blood and gore and sex but the characters and storyline is rich in flavour.

3:51 PM
@JSBձոգչ the other way around is what life is about. The fireworks are just about to go off and then some two year old says "I gotta go. I really gotta go" and so July fourth is spent inside a not totally horrific porta potty trying to touch as little of the inside as possible while explosions a going on about outside.
@Zoe All I heard of that was "... and blood and gore and sex and .... rich ... flavor"

Zoe
Though, I've never found good homosexual characterisations except for in Game of Thrones.
@Mitch That's basically Game of Thrones. Every storyline is backed with sex. Or chopping of heads. Or swearing.

@Zoe and the rich flavor?

Zoe
@Mitch Blood is rich in flavour, isn't it?
Or the stews and 77 course feasts they have. You'll find it. it's there. The way they drink beer from a cup is mouth watering
Maybe I should just continue with White Collar. I love a Mark Shepard.
or Hannibal

I wrote a hack, used Stacktrace to get nested caller, not sure how dumb/bad it is.

c c
4:19 PM
oh crap, I just wrote a mail with "qu'en" instead of "quand" (in French), like a "wain" instead of "when", which makes me think my brain is really damaged (not too formal email fortunately)

@cc Not that homophobia is unwarranted here, but unconscious swapping of homophones is common in all forms of casual writing in which it can occur.

c c
yes, that's weird though, it wouldn't have happened before, nevermind :) (I have some reasons to doubt about my brain state now, seen a medic yesterday)

I keep writing someone when I mean somewhat. I hate it.
@Rob He’s indefatigable.
@cc If you were actually crazy, you would not worry about these things.
@FumbleFingers If you had your way, we’d be stuck with the Grand Canon instead of the Grand Canyon for that particular cañón, which I’m sure even you will see as infinitely superior for a canonical transliteration. — tchrist 33 secs ago
A Grand Canon is like a Great Fugue, but less interesting.
Too much Churchill in that one.

4:37 PM
we will never surrender...

Exactly.
But he’s messed up his ngram, the poor boy.
This is not a valid Google N-Gram: the one for right-most is actually using a binary minus to subtract incidences of most from those of right. See here. — tchrist 32 secs ago
@MattЭллен Would you recognize an accent from the Fenlands if you heard it, or even just a general Norfolk one?

hmmmm
I don't know. I'd probably notice an accent, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to place it
My ex-boss is from that way, but he doesn't have a discernible accent.

Perhaps it got edumacated out of him in some public/private school.

@tchrist I forget, is he retired? Because the only people who have time for that kind of shit are either retired or in prison.

possibly (although he went to state school)

4:49 PM
@MattЭллен What do you call a state school in metric?

@MattЭллен The Wikipedia article on (so-called) Canadian Raising says that it occurs in the Fens.

@Robusto A county college?
Wait, no that’s English not French.
@Robusto I bet he’s off ngram-fiddling. But I don’t believe he’s quite retired yet.

So here's my thinking: Russia has a motherland and Germany has a fatherland. I wonder if they ever got together and bred, what the result would be. (@RegDw?)

4:51 PM
Poland.

@tchrist I don't think he raised like that

Kalingrad.
Königsberg.
Prussia.

My momma didn't raise no Canadians.

Betcher wrong.
Try tight versus dyed.
Or tide even.

I've never even had any Canuckie.

4:56 PM
For me, bite and bide have dipherent diphthongs.
Very slightly, and not phonemically so. Just different allophones.

I think mine do too.

That’s what I thought.

Never thought about it, but prolly true.

Because bite starts out like butt, while bide starts out like bah.

Yep.

Zoe
4:58 PM
@skullpatrol OH

OK, is there a simple Unix command for removing for the contents of a directory using only the address of the directory without removing the directory itself? I'm looking at the man page for rm and drawing no conclusions.

Yes, of course.

And by "address" I mean path.

I knew that.

so . . . rm [what?]

5:00 PM
By command, I presume you want shell-talk not C-talk.

Yeah.
rm flags.

@Zoe He will be back :D

rm -r /path/to/dir/*

Zoe
@skullpatrol That's great!

Yep

5:01 PM
and by path you mean lane
and by lane you mean avenue
and by avenue you mean promenade

-R Attempt to remove the file hierarchy rooted in each file argument. The -R option implies the -d option. If the -i option is specified, the user is prompted for confirmation before each direc-
tory's contents are processed (as well as before the attempt is made to remove the directory). If the user does not respond affirmatively, the file hierarchy rooted in that directory is
skipped.

-r Equivalent to -R.

-d Attempt to remove directories as well as other types of files.

walk like a unix tool

@MattЭллен By promenade I mean sashay.

@MattЭллен all men are mortal?

sashays away
@skullpatrol only the mortal ones

5:02 PM
See, the -d option says attempts to remove directories as well as other types of files. So I worried that it would remove the directory itself.

Hello.

Look who's back.

I managed to do some edits to get 20 rep to chat.

Zoe
@JasperLoy Welcome back!

@JasperLoy There are other games you could play. Don't you have an XBox?

5:05 PM
@Zoe Oh, I don't necessarily reply to messages that need no reply.
@Robusto No, I don't do computer games.

@JasperLoy The world makes sense now.

Zoe
@JasperLoy Haha, that's okay.

5:19 PM
Newer, cheaper Tesla on the way.
And I'm out.

5:41 PM
hi @JasperLoy!

@MattЭллен Hi! The mod election results were unexpected.

So much has changed!

I did not expect Yoichi to be elected.

Indeed. a surprise for all involved, I guess :D

I was surprised too. For Yoichi, it was a popularity vote more than based on expected mod skills

5:48 PM
What happend to simchona? She has not logged in for over two months.

in Mathematics, 8 mins ago, by Pedro Tamaroff
So it begins, again.

What will you do if what you want to do to improve society is against the law?

@JasperLoy I have no idea. Ya know it's the internet, people find other things.

@Mitch Hmm, in this case, I have a speculation which I shall not mention...

@JasperLoy You must be talking about peeing in public, right?

5:52 PM
@Mitch No.

Huh. I coulda swore that's what we were both thinking about.
OK so what is it that's against the law that you think would improve society?
Free cotton-candy to all children under 10?
That should be against the law if it's not already.

Well, I rather not mention it here.

!!youtube never again is what you swore the time before

OK, so you want us to answer abstractly?

5:55 PM
@Mitch I am just wondering if you have ever come across something like that yourself.

@JasperLoy come up with an intricate plan and find a fall guy

My answer is that if I really care, I should do it and then be jailed for it.

There's the theory of civil disobedience, eg, to improve society we should go to war less, and one way to help prevent that is to have fewer funds for the government so break the law by not paying taxes. Is that the kind of thing you're thinking of (but not exactly since you don't want to say)

However, I have suffered too much to really care about anything now.

@JasperLoy Jaywalking. I do that all the time.
It'd be much better for society if they allowed me to jaywalk more.
!!afk

5:58 PM
@Mitch Can you pick up some milk on your way back?

move to a country where jaywalking isn't illegal

Now you're standing there tongue tied
You'd better learn your lesson well
Hide what you have to hide
And tell what you have to tell
You'll see your problems multiplied
If you continually decide
To faithfully pursue
The policy of truth
