Yeah. That's true. We need to have something that sounds professional, available on the public domain. That way we can pitch it better for fund raising.
What is the difference between "I am here" and "a sentence is here" that makes John Lawler say for the first that here isn't an adverb and for the second that here is an adverb?
Both you and your friend are incorrect; sorry.
But that's not your fault; you're not playing with a full deck,
if you take your definitions of "part of speech" from English books.
They're hopeless; pay no attention to them.
Here is a proximal deictic locative predicate in the sentence
- I am he...
Alas, no. It's still an adverb. The construction Here/There is/are Noun Phrase allows the adverb to be fronted, with the subject Noun Phrase moved to the end, as the new information. It's said either referring to a physical place (pointing is appropriate), or metaphorically to refer to things that are being said in the conversation. Here is X generally means 'The next thing I say is X'. — John LawlerApr 26 at 17:37
is it the word order? Is "here is a sentence" different to "a sentence is here"?

Looks like Prof. Lawler's essaying into blank verse?
Needs better scansion, of course. But he is a linguist, not a poet.
@MattЭллен Then it's true: unicorns do fart rainbows.
Question for @Reg: If you had to put into words the effect of the prefixes ver- and zer- on verbs (verbrechen, zerstören, for example), what would you say? They are intensifiers? They perform some other operation (and if so, what operation and what is the result)? I have some ideas on this, but I'd like to get your expert take on the matter.
I guess what I'm looking for is a definition of the precise transformative nature of each, assuming that such a thing exists.
I must not ver-. Ver- is the mind-killer. Ver- is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my ver-. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the ver- has gone there will be nothing. Only süßen will remain.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Is that being misrepresented? According to a news report I read, the defense proved that he shot at the tires, and a ricochet caused the injury/death. But the prosecutor tried to get him for premeditated murder and that's what got him acquitted.
Am waiting for recruiter to send me update on next round of interview. He/She promised to schedule it few days ago but it didn't happen. I have emailed that person on that day but didn't hear back. Does my tone in this email sound rude .. "I have emailed you few days back regarding the recruitment drive held in xxxxx on June 1st. However, i did not get any response to it . Can you please look into it and respond to me ."
@0x8badf00d That comes off as rather tart. I would try to phrase such a request in a move positive way: "Hi, haven't heard anything, hope I didn't miss an email," that sort of thing.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It's viciously irresponsible to allow such crimes to be apparently condoned by the legal system. The fact is, the guy was firing a gun in a situation where he wasn't in danger and someone died and he is responsible. I don't see how it can be any more clear cut than that. I also object to the notion that the remedy for an interpretation of what constitutes "theft" of items of an arguable or abstract nature may involve deadly force.
@KitFox felony murder is different. Felony murder is where an action that causes a person to die gets raised to the level of a murder charge as a point of law.
"unauthorized taking" is essentially what all thefts are, isn't it? You take something you're not allowed to take.
Personally, I think he was intending to kidnap her and rape her and was going to try to blame someone else, and then killed her when he realized that she knew who he was.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The kid who murdered a girl recently.
Ah, yes. If she died accidentally as a result of being kidnapped, it wouldn't be first or second degree murder, because of intent, but it gets automatically raised to a murder charge anyway.
Assuming the defense could even prove it was an accident. Otherwise, if the prosecutor just proves that he killed her on purpose, it's at least 2nd degree murder
Right. I know what a felony murder is. My point was that felony murder is a particular kind of murder defined by the courts. "theft by unauthorized taking" just sounds like "theft by stealing". It's a tautology.
No, the different kinds of murder impact the seriousness of the crime. Theft by pickpocketing vs theft by conning someone to hand over a wallet have the same level of intent and the same harm.
2nd degree murder is different than 1st degree murder in the premeditation. It makes sense to differentiate from them in court because we consider one to be worse than the other.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's the basic issue. Texas law says you can use deadly force to protect your land or possessions in limited circumstances. law.onecle.com/texas/penal/9.42.00.html

>Co-founder, Marketing. Co-founder, Sales Co-founder, Design And so on and on. Co-founder, CEO I have to create an organizational structure for a new tech startup.
And should "co-founder" even come first, you reckon? I should think that their day-to-day role would be the most immediate information required. Unless it's not really about the roles.
