12:08 AM
@GrantThomas Are you Mr. D?
If so, it has indeed been a long time. How are you?
You are Mr. D! Hello, hello.
We were just talking about Phantom Commando yesterday.
Or maybe the day before.

3 hours later…
3:17 AM
@KitFox You are Number Six.

3:34 AM
Now don't all laugh at once.

1 hour later…
4:53 AM
Hello

5:14 AM
@Noah Hello.

5:43 AM
A good way to form an organizational structure?
For a small startup?

@Noah Arm wrestling.

6:29 AM
That's certainly helpful.
But jokes aside, is there any good guide on this?

6:42 AM
@Noah read The google way, I found it interesting and good

@JohanLarsson Thank you.
But that's a book. Have you read it? If you have, can you tell me what is it about?

I have read it a while ago, it is about google on their way up.
It is a short book, you will read it in one night

Here's what I came up with.
CEO, VP of Engeering, VP of Marketing, VP of PR.
Software Engineer
But the sound of these titles sounds a bit too big to me.
It's a small startup, at least for now.

Is this hypothetical or for your own company?

No, it's real.

7:00 AM
Then I'd say the less organization the better, try to work close to each other in the trenches and there will be no need for meetings etc.
From what I have seen in the wild the word organization is pretty much the opposite of efficiency and development.
I got to go to the beach now :D

Yeah. That's true. We need to have something that sounds professional, available on the public domain. That way we can pitch it better for fund raising.

What is the difference between "I am here" and "a sentence is here" that makes John Lawler say for the first that here isn't an adverb and for the second that here is an adverb?
2
A: What part of speech does “here” have in “I am here”?

John LawlerBoth you and your friend are incorrect; sorry. But that's not your fault; you're not playing with a full deck, if you take your definitions of "part of speech" from English books. They're hopeless; pay no attention to them. Here is a proximal deictic locative predicate in the sentence - I am he...

Alas, no. It's still an adverb. The construction Here/There is/are Noun Phrase allows the adverb to be fronted, with the subject Noun Phrase moved to the end, as the new information. It's said either referring to a physical place (pointing is appropriate), or metaphorically to refer to things that are being said in the conversation. Here is X generally means 'The next thing I say is X'. — John Lawler Apr 26 at 17:37
is it the word order? Is "here is a sentence" different to "a sentence is here"?

12:06 PM
@MattЭллен Could we add the RSS feed to the room?

that would be cool. Only @Reg can do that

Looks like Prof. Lawler's essaying into blank verse?
Needs better scansion, of course. But he is a linguist, not a poet.
@MattЭллен Then it's true: unicorns do fart rainbows.

@MετάEd I was laughing silently.

1:29 PM
look what you've done, @MattЭллен

rofl
I'm proud

oh my eyes

♫ Put a banana in your ear ♫

1:35 PM
"Only Reg can't do it" she snorts mockingly
grumbles

I wasn't sure if one had to be owner
what's got you grumbling?

♫ Put a ripe banana right in your favorite ear ♫

@MattЭллен Nobody respecting the Fox.
Also, I have some bug spray residue on my lips from kissing the top of my son's head when I sent him off to Nature Safari Camp.
aka Bug Camp.

ah
tasty
respects the Fox

Plus, apparently masturbation is not nearly as appealing when I'm not at work, so now I'm just going to clean the walls.

1:40 PM
that's a useful thing to do
I'm meant to be doing the dishes so I can make lunch

@MattЭллен Ernest Borgnine claimed it prolonged his life.

washing walls?

Well, I have to get the dust off so I can prime them.

well, whatever works, I suppose

Ooooh.

1:44 PM
@MattЭллен The other thing.

oh! washing plates. well I can see that.

There is only a benefit for men if they do it several times a week.
Keeps the kitchen clean, I guess.

so I've found

@MattЭллен Possibly, though, you have to clean the walls a lot.

1:49 PM
@MattЭллен Also, stop touching the dog.

Anybody seen my mop?

@KitFox Matt was using it.

@MετάEd but I thought it was OK if I was laughing at the same time

rofl

@MattЭллен It is perfectly okay to laugh and "mop" at the same time.

1:51 PM
phew

Damn it. Now I've made a mess of it. The stairwell is dripping.
Stupid broken mop.

@KitFox The bathtub is more forgiving than the stairwell.
Plus there's conditioner.

So that's where my conditioner has been going to.
Man, I keep that guy in Astroglide, and still my olive oil disappears at an unprecedented rate.
We're still talking about prepping the drywall, right?

@KitFox I think we're debating extra-virgin.

Eh. As long as it's lightweight and food-grade, I guess it doesn't really matter.

2:00 PM
@RegDwighт have you heard? Bricklink.com has been sold

@KitFox For external application maybe USP.

Oh yeah, maybe.
Screwdriver, sash brush, paint pot, plastic. Look like I'm ready. removes shirt

Question for @Reg: If you had to put into words the effect of the prefixes ver- and zer- on verbs (verbrechen, zerstören, for example), what would you say? They are intensifiers? They perform some other operation (and if so, what operation and what is the result)? I have some ideas on this, but I'd like to get your expert take on the matter.
I guess what I'm looking for is a definition of the precise transformative nature of each, assuming that such a thing exists.

I must not ver-. Ver- is the mind-killer. Ver- is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my ver-. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the ver- has gone there will be nothing. Only süßen will remain.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Is that being misrepresented? According to a news report I read, the defense proved that he shot at the tires, and a ricochet caused the injury/death. But the prosecutor tried to get him for premeditated murder and that's what got him acquitted.

@Robusto I’ve often wondered that myself.

2:47 PM
Am waiting for recruiter to send me update on next round of interview. He/She promised to schedule it few days ago but it didn't happen. I have emailed that person on that day but didn't hear back. Does my tone in this email sound rude .. "I have emailed you few days back regarding the recruitment drive held in xxxxx on June 1st. However, i did not get any response to it . Can you please look into it and respond to me ."

3:02 PM
@0x8badf00d That comes off as rather tart. I would try to phrase such a request in a move positive way: "Hi, haven't heard anything, hope I didn't miss an email," that sort of thing.

Thanks Robusto.

@MετάEd It's possible that it was misrepresented. But I still think it's pretty ridiculous to allow him to shoot at a person he knew was unarmed.

@0x8badf00d Show you're still interested, but don't assign blame to the other party. If any problem exists, maybe it's on your end.

had cleared 2 rounds of technical interview, team ran out of time on that day. They said they'll reschedule 3rd round and HR interview on monday.
So trying to figure out what happened

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It's viciously irresponsible to allow such crimes to be apparently condoned by the legal system. The fact is, the guy was firing a gun in a situation where he wasn't in danger and someone died and he is responsible. I don't see how it can be any more clear cut than that. I also object to the notion that the remedy for an interpretation of what constitutes "theft" of items of an arguable or abstract nature may involve deadly force.

3:10 PM
@Robusto yeah, exactly

3:25 PM
Theft by unauthorized taking.

@KitFox That's kinda like murder by killing to death

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 No, more like felony murder.
There are different kinds of theft, like there are different kinds of murder.
I thought everyone watched Law & Order
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Precious.

@KitFox felony murder is different. Felony murder is where an action that causes a person to die gets raised to the level of a murder charge as a point of law.
"unauthorized taking" is essentially what all thefts are, isn't it? You take something you're not allowed to take.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Felony murder is when a death occurs in the course of committing a felony.

@KitFox I used to. but now I get my legal advice from "Law and the Multiverse"
@KitFox Yes but it's a point of law.

3:30 PM
So the kid up here will be charged with felony murder if they accept his story that he was really intending just to kidnap her.

@KitFox what kid?

Personally, I think he was intending to kidnap her and rape her and was going to try to blame someone else, and then killed her when he realized that she knew who he was.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The kid who murdered a girl recently.

Ah, yes. If she died accidentally as a result of being kidnapped, it wouldn't be first or second degree murder, because of intent, but it gets automatically raised to a murder charge anyway.

Right. Felony murder.

Assuming the defense could even prove it was an accident. Otherwise, if the prosecutor just proves that he killed her on purpose, it's at least 2nd degree murder

3:33 PM
With hyphens, it would be clearer.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Right now he's charged with knowing and intentional murder.
Personally, I think that's a mistake.

Right. I know what a felony murder is. My point was that felony murder is a particular kind of murder defined by the courts. "theft by unauthorized taking" just sounds like "theft by stealing". It's a tautology.

Anyway, there's theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, theft by deception, theft by extortion, etc.
So there are different kinds.
Theft of services. I forgot about that one.

Hm, do they need so many kinds? Aren't they all just theft?

They are all different kinds.
Like there are different kinds of murder.
But yes, they are all theft.

No, the different kinds of murder impact the seriousness of the crime. Theft by pickpocketing vs theft by conning someone to hand over a wallet have the same level of intent and the same harm.
2nd degree murder is different than 1st degree murder in the premeditation. It makes sense to differentiate from them in court because we consider one to be worse than the other.

3:37 PM
@KitFox That reminds me...there's matricide for murdering one's mother, patricide for one's father, but is there a word for one's child(ren)?

Yes.

Isn't that for children in general?

Technically, matricide and patricide are for mothers and fathers in general.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 OK, but according to the criminal code, there are different kinds of theft.

oh, got it
!!/define filicide

3:38 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's the basic issue. Texas law says you can use deadly force to protect your land or possessions in limited circumstances. law.onecle.com/texas/penal/9.42.00.html

@KitFox I dunno. is it patricide if you kill someone who happens to be a father? or only if he is YOUR father?

@Zirak filicide A person who kills his or her own child.

So sexist.

Welcome to Springfield's 911 system. To report a crime, press 1! mashes buttons You have selected Regicide! If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press 1!

3:40 PM
Whelp. I've got the rest of the stairwell to prime. cu lunchtime.

Tyrannicide is a cool word. Sounds like the murdering of a T-rex.

yeah time for me to go too. bye

@KitFox Let's not forget the umbrella term parricide.

3:59 PM
@Robusto I call my umbrella "Shady". Well, no, I don't.

4:18 PM
@KitFox You got it - with more consideration than ever expected -, it sure is me! (: I'm good thanks, and hope the same for you and friends.

4:28 PM
Hello
Does this sound strange?
Co-founder, Marketing.
Co-founder, Sales
Co-founder, Design
And so on and on.
Co-founder, CEO
I have to create an organizational structure for a new tech startup.
Or want to might be a better word. I want to create an organizational structure for a new tech startup.

What impression do you have? Might be worth fleshing it out in a question proper.

@GrantThomas Was it directed to me?

Indeed, sir.
I know. I read the transcript. And re wondering of a good way to do that... me too.

So I had to get rid of the whole thing. Because repeating the same thing again and again is a waste of SE's memory.

Except that they keep it anyway, even when it is deleted.

4:42 PM
Seriously?

Yes.

Memory is a non-issue.

That's a bit strange. I think Facebook does the same and that's why I don't like it.

I can't figure out what to do for lunch and now I'm so hungry that I can't even think straight.
@Noah I would guess it has to do with legal issues.

Quench it for now with a half pint of milk or so, then think straight.

4:44 PM
@KitFox Or even just being able to resolve a disagreement about what somebody says happened.

@GrantThomas Damn, I missed the "of milk."

@Noah All the reasons to dislike Facebook and that's the one that irks you?

@MετάEd Yes.
Good lord, I'm filthy.
I will just have to go out in public like this.
bbl

@KitFox did you have a look at what i posted earlier.

What?

4:47 PM
>Co-founder, Marketing.
Co-founder, Sales
Co-founder, Design
And so on and on.
Co-founder, CEO
I have to create an organizational structure for a new tech startup.

What about it?

Do they make sense stylistically?
and grammatically.

Now that's a different question, see.

I think it sounds odd, unless the person co-founded marketing.
Co-founder and Marketing Specialist.
Co-founder and Sales Analyst.
Co-founder and Design Lead.
Co-founder is a person, Marketing is a department. They don't match.

That's what I thought. But SE has something similar.

4:49 PM
And personally, I think it is obnoxious to write "co-founder" anyway, as though that's some kind of genius that you had an idea.

And should "co-founder" even come first, you reckon? I should think that their day-to-day role would be the most immediate information required. Unless it's not really about the roles.

Yeah, that. I don't care if you had an idea. I care what you're doing with it.

Jinx, kinda.

I mean, in terms of the structure of an organization.
And really I have to go for lunch. Later.

Go eat. Bye for now!

4:56 PM
@KitFox I think you're being too strict. They don't have to match.

5:07 PM
@Robusto clearly not intensifiers, as they carry an intrinsic meaning.
For zer- I'd say it's something like -apart.
For ver- I can't tell for it has a number of different meanings.
I'm pretty confident there must be dozens of papers if not books covering ver-.
Me, I'm not even sure right now what the etymology is. I'd have to look it up.

@Robusto So you think, Cofounder, Marketing is okay?

Hi all
I want to know if this phrase is correct

I would go with something like:

Bob Bobberson (co-founder)
Head of Marketing

I agree that co-founder should not overshadow what they do.

"soon will come the Monday" to mean that Monday will come soon

only say that if you're waiting for a particular Monday, not for Monday in general
"Soon will come the Monday when I no longer wish for silence"

5:15 PM
what about "soon will come Monday"
?

you know, if you wish for silence every Monday
@TharinduRusira yeah, that's OK. kinda poetic. "It's not long until Monday" or if you want to you soon "Monday is soon"

I want to mean Mondays in general
yes that's exactly what I want, rhyme

poetic doesn't mean rhyme

ok, let's say poetic and rhyme :D

but yeah, "Soon will come Monday" is a more fanciful style
you won't find it in formal prose or regular dialogue

5:18 PM
yeah, that's why I came here. I don't hear it regularly
but it suddenly came to mind and felt familiar

You could certainly find "soon will come the Monday" in a song lyric
Hey that reminds me. Has everyone remembered to renew their poetic license?

yes, I saw when I Googled the phrase

checks license Apparently I need to take a renewal test

@MattЭллен You should do that before you get pulled over for scansion.

5:44 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 a Korean game company?
Do they even know the first thing about LEGO?

@Noah Yes. Why not?
@RegDwighт Thanks.
@RegDwighт So can you compare/contrast the function of ver- in verbrechen and versprechen?

One meaning ver has in common with zer is "apart, all over the place". Another one would be "change, change of state".

You know, trying to pin down all the meanings of for in English verbs starting with it is kinda harder than it looks.

@Robusto Verbrechen is common as a noun, but verbrechen as a verb sounds odd.

@tchrist That's a forgone conclusion.

5:58 PM
An aforegone one.

Versprechen actually has two different meanings. To promise, or to let the tongue slip.

@RegDwighт OK, maybe verspringen? I'm just thinking of the first words that come into my head.

So there you have a single word showcasing the complexity of ver.
@Robusto that would be a neologism, but a perfectly understandable one, with ver taking the meaning "do the wrong thing (by accident)".
