I agree with your dislike of the brackets and with your solution. Your "there is no interruption", however, I disagree with (obviously a minor point); there is interruption if you use brackets. The point is, you should only use brackets if the elaboration is non-essential, unimportant; however, if you refer to Winnipeg later, this means what you put in brackets was in fact important enough to refer back to, so the brackets were used improperly. — Cerberus53 secs ago
@Cerberus They're responding to a user that ranted about SO but admitted they didn't actually use SO, ever. They meant to say "If you haven't participated how would you know" but instead said precipitate. I thought it was funny.
@Cerberus Is that the one where you can swipe your hand across the screen to take a screenshot? Apple needs to add that to the iPhone asap. Its all futuristic-seeming and stuff.
@WendiKidd Oh, quite possibly: there are tons of things you make Android phones do with applications. All I know is it has a function where you can scroll down the screen by moving your eyes downward.
@WendiKidd Using the camera in some sort of efficient mode. The function where the screen would automatically stay on while you were looking at it was already in the S3. Then there is the function where a video pauses when you look away...
@Cerberus I can't figure out if that's cool or creepy. When your android sucks out your brain and takes over your body, my iPhone and I will laugh at you.
I have been using an application that let the screen stay on while I was looking at it, but it didn't perform as well as I would have liked under poor lighting.

@WendiKidd Haha, absolutely! Then again, if you knew what this application Android Lost could do...it can take pictures of a thief, speak text to him, sound an alarm, track him by GPS, and survive a SIM change...and anything you can think of.

@MετάEd Well, not even that is necessarily true. I'm getting my friend this plan for € 16/m that comes with a free phone that costs € 300 or so without a plan.
@WendiKidd Hehe...then again, I believe unlimited or very-high-volume plans may be a bit cheaper in North America. Or at least in the US, because Canada is the worst place in the world, apparently.
@WendiKidd Yeah, see, part of it is that you don't have small plans. Just like...food! So anyway, 2 GB will be a lot more expensive than € 14 here. Although it can be very cheap in some other EU countries like Austria.
@Cerberus See I want the small plan though. I would never ever ever come close to using 2 GB. I check my email sometimes on the move. Otherwise I'm hooked up to wifi. I don't need the required minimum extra $30 a month plan.
Unlimited family texting plan is an additional $30 a month. When you split that among everyone it's not that bad, but for 1 person it would stink. Never come close to using all our minutes either, I don't even know how many we have cause we never come close.
Being on the family plan saves money though, cause the first 2 phones are like $80 or $90 each a month, but additional lines are only +$10 a month.

@tchrist Yeah. My brain isn't working well enough to give them an answer beyond "this is the answer just because". But it makes me feel guilty not to answer it because they're actually trying.
ESL courses may teach that the present perfect is for the near-past in ways that may or may not be the way native speakers actually think of it. Plus North America favors the simple past in places where Britain and Ireland may still use a present perfect.
That might be why it sounds more formal (or 'old-timey', as you said) to us. A lot of British phrasings seem to come across that way to Americans in general.
