Whaaat.
I'm supposed to be there around your bed time.
There could be a lot better a system than what is here. It is a shame such a resource is wasted through so many faults in the system. Ermm.. If you've never precipitated how do you know what systems are in place? Do you know that on Stack Overflow alone they get several thousand questions and over 800 flags a day? That's quite a lot in my opinion.. — Seth 1 hour ago
Precipitation...interesting....
;)
I'm tired (well that's not new) and found that amusing. Figured I'd share with you all, who may either find it funny or find me funny for finding it funny. /shrug Either way there shall be amusement in some form. /takes nap
@Cerberus no, not my bed time. Yours.
I know you don't have a clock, what with no sun or sand in hell. But.
@RegDwighт Uhh since when is this my bed time?
Although, in fact, I'm going to bed much earlier than normally, you you're lucky tonight.
Since 1997.
I agree with your dislike of the brackets and with your solution. Your "there is no interruption", however, I disagree with (obviously a minor point); there is interruption if you use brackets. The point is, you should only use brackets if the elaboration is non-essential, unimportant; however, if you refer to Winnipeg later, this means what you put in brackets was in fact important enough to refer back to, so the brackets were used improperly. — Cerberus 53 secs ago
@RegDwighт Since never.
03:08
1997 is not never. I am fairly confident it took place around 1997, all over the world.
@WendiKidd I'm afraid my brains are too small to understand (I am not familiar with the way things go on SO anyway), but good for you!
I have no context to interpret that quote.
@RegDwighт In other words, WRONGGG!
Well, I'm looking at the context right now. But I'm also regretting it.
@Cerberus They're responding to a user that ranted about SO but admitted they didn't actually use SO, ever. They meant to say "If you haven't participated how would you know" but instead said precipitate. I thought it was funny.
03:09
@Cerberus so you say Lady Di and Mother Teresa are still alive?
@RegDwighт Haha. Yeah I can imagine.
@RegDwighт I'm glad you understood what I meant so accurately.
@Cerberus WUT?
@WendiKidd Ohh haha.
@RegDwighт /sarcasm
Who is sarcasm and what is he doing in my room.
Also why is he carrying that dagger.
Or javelin.
Or whatever that is supposed to be.
03:11
To your whatever-it-is-something-like-sarcasm-or-some-other-kind-of-vile-irony-like-sardonism.
Whoa, what are you doing awake?
Does he have three heads? Cause then I have a guess.
I’m falling over, and you’re awake.
We are being awake, that's what we're doing.
I like your new icon.
03:11
Sarkazein is done with the teeth in one's mouth.
Whose icon now?
@tchrist If it makes you feel any better, I'm about to crash too.
Avatar.
Must be mine. Everyone else is like totally old on the icon front.
@tchrist I'm glad you're calling it an icon, instead of this silly word some people use.
03:12
HIPPOS
@tchrist facepalm
@Cerberus I call it an icon.
@Cerb spoke too soon?
Yeah.
It is my curse.
@tchrist points up
I called it the other thing so he would know what I meant.
03:13
Don't stray from the path!
He knew it.
If you like my icon, go support my CUUSOO project. That's an order. If you don't like my icon, support it and I will pay you 50% of my profit.
That could be costly for you.
If you pay each of us 50 %...
@RegDwighт Done.
Plus the Orthodox are into ikons.
I would support you, but I am not a member.
03:14
This is the problem.
My new avatar looks too much like a wishbone.
I still like it.
It looks obscene.
Oh, that kind of bone. Now I understand.
@MετάEd I think dinosaur.
03:15
@WendiKidd I like it.
@tchrist Correct.
Hmm this is not good, the alcohol is retreating from my blood.
@Cerberus Is that the one where you can swipe your hand across the screen to take a screenshot? Apple needs to add that to the iPhone asap. Its all futuristic-seeming and stuff.
@tchrist What do you mean?
@Cerberus You can feel that, can you?
;)
So I come to this room and post some shit and suddenly it's all alive.
03:16
Oh, I am seeing something else.
Interesting.
The one on your starboard header is different.
@Reg It’s your room, that’s why.
Well I guess my job here is done. Back to watching Breaking Bad.
@WendiKidd Oh, quite possibly: there are tons of things you make Android phones do with applications. All I know is it has a function where you can scroll down the screen by moving your eyes downward.
BBL or what/ever.
03:17
@WendiKidd Yup!
@Cerberus What???? how????
@tchrist glad to see someone acknowledge the truth, for once.
Abierto y alto.
Never denied it, not once nor thrice.
@tchrist But twice?
@WendiKidd Using the camera in some sort of efficient mode. The function where the screen would automatically stay on while you were looking at it was already in the S3. Then there is the function where a video pauses when you look away...
Etc. etc.
03:19
@RegDwighт We love you.
@tchrist What.
Awwww
They have 30 or so of these gimmicks, though not all work equally well.
@MετάEd A fist.
@tchrist That still leaves open the possibility of you denying it 2³ times.
@Cerberus I can't figure out if that's cool or creepy. When your android sucks out your brain and takes over your body, my iPhone and I will laugh at you.
03:19
I think you need to hold the phone in a certain angle for the eye-scrolling to activate btw.
@tchrist A fist? Where?
@WendiKidd When my Android has sucked out my brains, at least you can use your Iphone as a brick to throw at it!
@tchrist Ohhhhhh. That was yesterday's avatar. You might want to refresh.
@tchrist Then what you see will have the potential to be truly obscene.
@Cerberus you're holding it wrong.
@Cerberus Ha. I'll be the first to admit my iPhone doesn't work that well. I want my old non-smart-phone back sometimes.
03:21
I have been using an application that let the screen stay on while I was looking at it, but it didn't perform as well as I would have liked under poor lighting.
Don’t lock the door as I flicker-flacker.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I wish I were holding it right now!
A dinosaur on stilts?
@WendiKidd Aww...you could use two phones, one small and one big; I hear this is all the rage in Taiwan.
Plastic Man?
03:22
@Cerberus IT'S STARING AT YOUR EYES AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF THEY"RE OPEN OR NOT. That's...that's.... I think that for the first time I understand why people used to think cameras sucked out your soul. I'm leaning more towards creepy robot AI that takes over the world, but.....
Or perhaps it was Korea.
I'm reconsidering the star.
@Cerberus Ha, and pay two phone plans? no thanks!!!
why do I eat sugar before bed?
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 because secretly you don't want to sleep?
03:22
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 For sweet dreams.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 So you do not die during nocturnal torpor, just like any other hummingbird.
@MετάEd but what does the wine do?
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Whiney dreams.
@WendiKidd Haha, absolutely! Then again, if you knew what this application Android Lost could do...it can take pictures of a thief, speak text to him, sound an alarm, track him by GPS, and survive a SIM change...and anything you can think of.
@WendiKidd No, they use the same plan.
Besides, plans are a lot cheaper outside North America.
(I pay € 14/month all inclusive, and here only the sender pays for calls and text messages, and that's including VAT and everything.)
03:24
@Cerberus And phones are more. It's just a different racket, is all.
@MετάEd That’s what the Houyhnhnm have.
@Cerberus do they force you to have a data plan?
@tchrist You really should read Mistress Masham's Repose by T. H. White. Except you probably have.
Mistresses can be distressingly dear.
@MετάEd Well, not even that is necessarily true. I'm getting my friend this plan for € 16/m that comes with a free phone that costs € 300 or so without a plan.
03:26
@Cerberus Daaaaaaaang. Now I really wish I'd ended up moving to Germany.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 No. But you would want a data plan. My € 14 plan includes 500 MB/m.

Nostalgia can be a harsh mattress.
Mattresses are the best.
@Cerberus $30 a month just for data on mine, which is the smallest plan at 2 gigs of data
03:27
Time for dreams.
poof
Nighty night!
@WendiKidd Hehe...then again, I believe unlimited or very-high-volume plans may be a bit cheaper in North America. Or at least in the US, because Canada is the worst place in the world, apparently.
Though who uses 2 gigs of data I have no idea
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 G'nite.
I should think that a mattress would be the ♂ (or even ⚣) equivalent of a mistress.
03:28
@Cerberus Ha! Well yeah, I don't think it's that much more expensive to get the larger plans. But when the basic one costs so much to start with....
@WendiKidd Yeah, see, part of it is that you don't have small plans. Just like...food! So anyway, 2 GB will be a lot more expensive than € 14 here. Although it can be very cheap in some other EU countries like Austria.
@tchrist A mattress is obviously the ♀ equivalent of matter.
@Cerberus See I want the small plan though. I would never ever ever come close to using 2 GB. I check my email sometimes on the move. Otherwise I'm hooked up to wifi. I don't need the required minimum extra $30 a month plan.
@WendiKidd Yeah, that's it: people should have the option to use few data and pay little.
God, it’s just like a crosshaired bullseye.
03:30
Yeah I don't eve use close to the 500 that's in my plan.
(I have another 550 that can be MB/minutes/texts, whatever I use. MBs are taken from the 500 bundle first, though.)
Unlimited family texting plan is an additional $30 a month. When you split that among everyone it's not that bad, but for 1 person it would stink. Never come close to using all our minutes either, I don't even know how many we have cause we never come close.
Being on the family plan saves money though, cause the first 2 phones are like $80 or $90 each a month, but additional lines are only +$10 a month.
Still, astronomical when all added together.
Why has @cerb deserted ELL? /sniffs
@WendiKidd Yeah.
Then again, many people here use more than their bundles, and then you pay a lot.
I used to have bills close to € 100 a lot on a different plan.
@Cerberus Same here, for the crazy data hogs who go over 2GB or even 5. But those people should just get a plan with more data
My current plan lets you pay very low prices for overages, though.
Ah well that's good
/notices question-dodging ;)
03:35
@WendiKidd Absolutely!
@WendiKidd Oh, hmm, I haven't!
@tchrist So ... the new avatar? Obscene?
@Cerberus No? yay!
I just can't be in too many rooms at once.
@MετάEd Not like the old one.
@Cerberus Ah no, I mean the site itself, not the chat. I've given up on chat for now. No one is ever there.
You've brought me over to the ELU dark side as far as that's concerned ;)
03:35
@Cerberus That’s because of your infinite flexibility.
@tchrist The new one has much more obscene potential than the old one.
I'll wait until the site is bigger and try again.
But I generally just don't answer many questions on SE any more, and, on ELL, all questions seem to get satisfactory answers very quickly!
@WendiKidd Haha oh dear, my apologies!
@tchrist If it were infinite...
@Cerberus Not this one. I've kept it open in a tab because I haven't felt like answering it but feel bad that no one has yet. I'm just sleeeepy. /naps

Q: Present perfect--just how much relevance?

jessWhen it comes to using present perfect, just how much relevance to the present do I need to take into account? "You are right, I should be happy that she had/has given me a C on the practice exam. But now that she has called/called off the actual exam, I don't know why I spent so much time be...

NNSs have so much trouble with English “tense”-y combos.
03:39
@tchrist Yeah. My brain isn't working well enough to give them an answer beyond "this is the answer just because". But it makes me feel guilty not to answer it because they're actually trying.
@WendiKidd I don’t know why he wants something perfectic on the first one.
@tchrist Yeah I don't get that either. I commented and said that should just be "gave", but didn't write out a complete answer.
You could make a case for has, but the normal past seems just fine. The perfect one seems kinda old-timey.
Like you’re on some British upstairs–downstairs thing, and you are the uppers.
Haha yeah.
Well "gave" fits with "spent".
She gave me a bad grade at which time I spent time worrying.
Now she has called it off
I dunno
Also the "don't know" is present, so I'm not sure why it was called out as part of the question
This is hard because none of us learned these things the way they are trying to learn it.
03:42
@tchrist Right. It's like, I can give you the answer, but I'd have to think really hard to explain why.
I think Cerb and Reg do so well in part because of knowing related Germanic languages. You can tell that neither is from Outer Mongolia.
Yeah, I was trying to get Cerb to answer the question so I wouldn't feel guilty anymore, but I think he's disappeared xP
ESL courses may teach that the present perfect is for the near-past in ways that may or may not be the way native speakers actually think of it. Plus North America favors the simple past in places where Britain and Ireland may still use a present perfect.
That might be why it sounds more formal (or 'old-timey', as you said) to us. A lot of British phrasings seem to come across that way to Americans in general.
I read an amusing quip about ELU&ELL on some unrelated site saying our sites have become mostly about Asians trying to learn English.
03:46
They should come to ELL then! :)
That's what we're there for after all
This was by a UK native.
The thing is, there really are a lot of Asians. :)
Billions.
Yeah, china is what, 1/3 of the population of the earth or something? I forget. Used to be something like that.
googles
Asians ask questions of us that Western Europeans never ever do. It really makes us go, uh what?
@MετάEd OFFS it suddenly jumped at me!
20% as of 2011, says the internet.
@tchrist are you acting like an ugly American programmer?
03:48
So my figures were a bit off.
@TemporaryNickName Sequihuh?
@TemporaryNickName American and programmer the both of us can cop to, but I'm not sure where ugliness comes into play.
@tchrist did you know? not every single Asians are chinese
Just most of the married ones.
They are scary like that. Some of them have teeth.
03:51
All the better to snip you with.

Q: determining sequence

PatoI have a question regarding determining sequence of events. Can you please take a look at my example below first? "It is taking her a bit longer than usual to get back on the game because she had come back from Germany last night. So I gave her a friendly warning just now and she promised me ...

More perfect sequencing troubles.
On first glance looks fine except it should be "she came back"
I don’t know why he thinks it should be past perfect.
It took her so long because she just got back from Germany. Because she had just gotten back from Germany.
Right. Yeah, I dunno
It might that he is translating from Spanish, where I can see past perfect fitting there fine.
Given “Pato”.
But I have no rules for either, just what sounds ok running through my head.
I have to go feed the cat ice cream.
lol what flavor?
03:56
Want ice cream now.
me too :/
Ooh. What do you suppose Ben & Jerry's "Everything But The..." has in it.
@MετάEd I'm going to guess either "Cow" or "Kitchen Sink" as the end of that statement
@WendiKidd Always vanilla.
Oh but you want to know what's in it, not what isn't. hmm
@tchrist Vanilla is good, but I like mint. I wish I could find plain mint ice cream without stuff in it.
03:59
@WendiKidd Is for the kitty!!
He likes vanilla.
I like mint.
And yeah, they chunkify it too much.
I have a strong feeling that Australia will eventually become an Asian country
" A Collision of Chocolate & Vanilla Ice Creams mixed with Peanut Butter Cups, Heath Bar Chunks, White Chocolatey Chunks & Fudge Covered Almonds"
Yeah definitely. It's either got chocolate chips or hard candies in it. Why can't I just have peppermint ice cream?
I think I win.
