The travel prohibition to DR Congo has expanded.
To be quite honest, I wouldn't go there at the best of times.
But, yeah, what Rwanda is doing there is not great.
00:21
@Cerberus Well said. I've no desire to go where if the mosquitoes and tse-tse flies don't kill you, the people will.
00:41
Yeah.
Unless you drive from compound to compound in an armoured car.
01:06
In this case it literally is a jungle out there.
Quite so.
01:29
@skullpatrol got to keep from goin under
In Africa that danger is very real.
Though extreme poverty pulls people slowly under.
Like living on $2.15 per DAY; that doesn't even buy a bag of potato chips :(
It does if they are 5 cents a bag.
01:57
That would be 43 bags.
02:43
@Mitch Oh
@Cerberus What size is this bag? You mean small packet? The smallest chips packet costs.0.15 USD here
@Vikas I remember visiting Washington DC Metro back in the 80's when they were brand new, and I only just saw them again in the past couple years and they are all still beautifully modern. Chicago's are like Boston's, some stops (above or below ground) are rehabilitated, some look like they are still from the 19th century.
It's all about how the budget is managed, lots are needed to just run the trains, and little is left over for improvement.
I'm pretty sure around the world such systems are mostly supported by local taxes, and fares only contribute a small percentage, like under 20% (I'm guessing)
03:24
@Vikas The magic of purchasing power. Here that's like $4.
@Vikas That's cheap!
But I honestly I don't know: what if a large bag costs 5 cents in Congo?
@Cerberus Empty calories and too much salt. But the 'healthy' ones taste like cardboard.
@Mitch None are healthy, and, yeah.
It wasn't my idea!
I think it was closer to $3 pre-pandemic. The real reason why Biden lost the election.
03:45
The forecast keeps insisting on abnormally warm weather in the days ahead.
If this comes true, this will be the weirdest winter I've ever experienced in Yekaterinburg.
There has been not a single day with temps below minus 20C during the day.

@CowperKettle That's a good computer security discussion. Worth knowing the potential issues and then audit all IoT devices operating in our homes. I raised the issue before here. I may need to do a pentest to disallow any incoming VNC-like requests although I need to be careful not to shoot myself in the foot for my own legitimate remote desktop access.
@alphabet "Potato chips are now $5 for a small packet and still not good for you. Why that's bad for Biden"
14:48
This is the small packet I was talking about. It costs 10 INR == around 0.15 USD
25 grams
@Mitch Could you share the photo of this "small packet"?
I'm sure the quantity would be higher.
15:10
@Vikas do to mean like a photo from the web?
I'm not currently at a grocery store or convenience store that would have such a thing.
Also it would be hard to compare by photo since sometimes the bags have a lot of air inside them, some not as much, for the same amount of product.
Anyone here has experience teaching highschoolers Python programming? I'm looking for a good IDE for my oldest. Came across Thonny that impressed some "hackers". It seems Raspberry Pi even have support for it which is a plus for me since I'd like to include Raspbrery Pi in the curriculum.
@GratefulDisciple PyCharm wasn't sufficient?
@Vikas In the USA, buying bulk through Costco.com costs USD 43.5 cents per 1 oz (about 35g) pack.
@Mitch I'll evaluate that too. I want an IDE that is not simplistic but can expose the student to underlying programming concepts such as lvalue vs. rvalue.
Gotta go. Talk to you later.
@GratefulDisciple 👍🏽
15:30
@Mitch Yes, similar to one I shared.
@Mitch They would mention quantity on shopping websites.

I described my weird symptoms of 10 years ago to ChatGPT and it came up with this. Curious - can a mild hypothyroidism really produce endothelial dysfunction to such an extent via depletion of bioavailable nitric oxide?
@CowperKettle I don't think AI is reliable for health yet.
It's surely unreliable, but the hypothesis is curious. I'll do a search for papers linking cases of intermittend claudication with endothelial NO-associated function.
Ten years ago, that really stumped me - how could a mild hypothyroidism produce such a symptom, and how could this symptom vanish so quickly.
No matter whom I asked in these years, nobody could explain this.
I know that myopathy for certain develops only in cases of very severe hypothyroidism.
So ChatGPT must be hallucinating.
What if my body somehow produces little eNOS-derived NO? I wonder.
Because.. my life is full of ultra-weird occurrences.
Before starting on microdoses of insulin, I could hardly run 2 km.
But now I know that I had no diabetes.
And then, sifting the literature, I came across studies showing that glulisine promotes eNOS-derived production of nitric oxide.
I tried ditching glulisine, but a week later I had to stop twice during the ParkRun, a weird thing.
Even though I was well-trained and ate a lot of honey just prior to running.
But I had to stop and walk a bit.
So I wondered. Then I resumed microdosing on insulin, and started finishing in the first 20% of runners as usual.
But I know for sure now that I have no diabetes at all.
1oz ~ 28g

And.. weird thing. When I break a capsule of L-arginine (Nitric Oxide donor) and let some powder dissolve in my mouth, and then eat a couple capsules, I feel sometimes some kind of increased mental clarity.
What if there's something indeed with my vasculature.
But it's outlandish.
50¢ -> 0.04 INR
Is it expensive?
@Vikas replies above
@CowperKettle that was solely from an online search. I'm not showing up at an actual live store to find out.
I loved potato chips as a kid. They were sometimes sold in Sverdlovsk, and during summer vacations mom would sometimes buy them here when we stayed for a week with the grandma on our way to the Black Sea resorts or back to Siberia
From vague memory (having never bought such a thing on purpose) I think through vending machines the price is probably in the $2 range which is highway robbery for what you get!

Hmm this one was a tiny bit odd.
I can't imagine SPOILER.
@Vikas hm that does seem strange...I was reading from what I entered into Google...let me try again...
OMG... Google interpreted '50 cents in rupees' as about bitcoin.
Asking '.5 USD to INR' gives 43.32 Indian Rupees'
That makes more sense
20:13
@Cerberus That was a strange one, but I asked a few people afterwards and they said something like, "Oh, yeah, I love cholula on eggs!" So I guess it's a thing.
Cholula Hot Sauce is a brand of chili-based hot sauce, based in Stamford, Connecticut, manufactured in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico by SANE, and licensed by McCormick. According to its manufacturers, Cholula hot sauce rates 1,000–2,000 on the Scoville scale. The product is packaged in a glass bottle with a distinctive round wooden cap. Six varieties of Cholula are widely marketed in North America. == Brand name == The hot sauce is named after the 2,500-year-old city of Cholula, Puebla, the oldest still-inhabited city in Mexico. The name "Cholula" is derived from the Nahuatl toponym Chollollan, meaning...
