@Cerberus @jlliagre Has Latin semel truly no latterday versions inherited by any of her daughters?
simitur isn't helping

Oh, semper and semel have the same beginning.
And semper endured. Just not semel.
> From sem-per, from Proto-Indo-European *sḗm (“one”), root of Latin semel (“once”) + -per (“throughout”). Analogous to semel +‎ -per. Cognates include Ancient Greek εἷς (heîs) and Sanskrit सकृत् (sa-kṛ́t). Compare singulus. For similar compositions see paulisper, quantisper, tantisper.
So semel pro semper is one of those weird things that secretly almost seems to repeat itself. :)
Yes, I know pro and per aren't the same.
More like how once for forever does so.
The adverbializing /s/ suffix must be from PIE.
But Latin repeats things tenfold more readily with deciens (or decies) more easily than English does with tence.
Sevence.
Fierce.

@tchrist Like forever and ever.

When I'm giving my cat water from a syringe, he has uncontrolled jerks of his front paws as he starts drinking. I wonder why.

@CowperKettle Sounds like some problem with the central nervous system, whether from injury, disease, or toxin.
Whatever it is, it's heartbreaking.

Maybe he has recurrent urethral occlusions due to his avoidance of drinking. This might thicken the contents of his urinary bladder and cause new attacks
Now I make sure to give at least 30 mL daily to him by syringe, in the hope to forestall the next blockage.

Medical slang of the day: sub-Q (subcutaneous)
> With chronic kidney disease (CKD or kidney failure), cats usually produce more urine than usual, and may become dehydrated as they may not drink sufficiently to compensate for the fluid loss. This can make the kidney disease worse, and regular SQ fluid administration can be a valuable management tool for these cats.
I never knew one could administer fluids subcutaneously.

> The oxalates found in beets can increase your uric acid level, meaning that too many beets can lead to gout. To avoid this, stick to no more than a single half-cup serving of beets per day.
I wonder if this is true.

@CowperKettle wait, isn't it the opposite? People with high UA (including gouty people) are more likely to develop oxalate kidney stones, so the recommendation is that people with high UA avoid oxalatey food
As for why, well, oxalate can form stones, urate can form stones, and in a solution, if you have very small, micrometer-sizes "nuclei" for sediment formation, the process is greatly accelerated
Besides, AFAIK oxalate is an end product of UA metabolism, not vice versa?
And of course, the advice applies to people who eat lots of beet every day, not the occasional consumer
@CowperKettle there are many reasons kidneys can fail, and in most of them urine output is lower, not increased. I don't know the epidemiology of CKD in cats though.
It's definitely true that dehydration further damages the kidneys.

Children who started school in the fall of 2023 will always have some AI available for generation of homework etc.
Mind-boggling.
And every year, this AI will be more diverse and more available and more powerful
And maybe it will become more powerful than those kids before they reach their final school year.

@jlliagre I tried that duotrigordle. Meh. But every time I hit return it enters a "K" for the beginning of the next line. Does that happen to you?

@Robusto No "K" for me.

I don't understand why that would be happening.

@Robusto A cosmic ray flipping a bit, likely.

That would be one reliably repeating cosmic ray.

Don't underestimate cosmic rays sentience.

I'll keep that in mind.

9:49 PM
@jlliagre gulp

@Mitch Hard to swallow?

@CowperKettle Because he is used to grabbing whatever is introduced into his mouth. If, for example, you held on tight to a chicken bone and offered it to him, he would put up his paws to handle/deal with the end you offered him. However, here, it is a piece of plastic and he has an involuntary gesture like he would with the chicken bone except here,
he cannot complete his gesture so his paws just jerk. Is that explanation clear enough to understand?//I have a cat fountain my cat is simply not interested in. If you pay the post (mailing fee), I'll send it to you. :)

10:13 PM
@CowperKettle Yes, sometimes they do it and the cats has a huge bulge in their rear back for a few hours. It's the damndest thing to see. But it's very effective.

11:03 PM
@jlliagre naw just wondering whose thumb is in the cosmic ray generator

11:28 PM
@jlliagre Hmm not sure I understand the meaning of this.

11:39 PM
@CowperKettle Meaning the Eloi won't have to work anymore?

@Cerberus It's called le doigt de Dieu (1844).

Hmm and what does the scene mean?
I know it means God's finger.

Or in this case, God's thumb.
Or should that be Thumb?

@Cerberus It shows an artist finishing after 20 years of work it's masterpiece directly in a Louvre exhibition room.

11:54 PM
@jlliagre That's the skinniest artist I've ever seen.

@Robusto He is from another world.

The plot thickens ...

Un autre monde est un livre illustré publié en 1844 par l'éditeur parisien Henri Fournier. La conception et les illustrations sont de Grandville et le texte, de Taxile Delord. == Description == Le sous-titre de l'ouvrage est constitué d'un jeu phonique de désinences : « Transformations, visions, incarnations, ascensions, locomotions, explorations, pérégrinations, excursions, stations, cosmogonies, fantasmagories, rêveries, facéties, lubies, métamorphoses, zoomorphoses, lithomorphoses, métempsycoses, apothéoses et autres choses ».
