@RegDwigнt Too bad Monty Python isn't doing sketches anymore. I would love to see one where someone actually goes to help this person out and receives nothing but criticism and abuse.
@Færd from my experience observing native speakers, it's merely preferable.
That said, also from my experience observing native speakers: fuck native speakers. They don't know nothing about anything.
Everyone makes mistakes all the time. Especially idiots. And most people are idiots.
If you make an idiot mistake in a foreign language, you get corrected. If you make an idiot mistake in your mother tongue, you get to claim it's the new norm.
@Mitch - Why am I just now learning the words for punctual and durative verbs? It's been like trying to discuss potty training without using the words poop and diaper... Someone owes me a Popsicle.
@J.Taylor Poets it sticks to no grammar / Hit word with the liter'ry hammer / As long as they rhyme / We no give a dime / 'Cause in it we are for the glamour — marcellothearcane2 hours ago
The last weeks and days have seen some erratic behaviour by Stack Exchange Inc, such as likely illegal changes to the content license and the firing of a community moderator for no good reason. It would be nice if those just were examples of ill judgement, but the disturbing alternative is that S...
@RegDwigнt Well, that claim needs statistical support, but I get the idea. Thanks.
@marcellothearcane Do you know if there is a democratically built and managed Q&A site on the internet that's comparable in size with SE? Something like the Wikipedia model but for a Q&A site?
@KannE I've never heard those words before, at least not without swearing. They make more sense than perfect and imperfect, but completed and continuous are the best of all but no one uses completed.
Unless I've totally misunderstood where you're coming from.
> a metastasis shows on a section of the CT scan that includes the left iliac lymph node
In Russian, the phrase is "in a projection of the left iliac lymph node".
I can't find the English counterpart for this radiology report phrase.
It's when something is seen in a slice of a CT scan that also includes some organ.
Literally in Russian it goes like "a metastasis is seen in the projection of this or that organ"
I know that the English counterpart to Russian "projection" is "view", like "left lateral view". But how to translate it when a "view" passes through a particular body organ..
On Friday, half an hour before Shabbat and two days before Rosh Hashana, Stack Overflow Inc. suddenly revoked my moderator status on all sites where I had it. I found this out while handling flags, when I suddenly got notifications for Marshal and Deputy badges (which moderators are ineligible t...
@Mitch Oh, so they're not common knowledge. Well, I feel less stupid then. Thanks. I've been saying continuous and "one-time thing" (or "done deal"...whatever), but I can't ever see the big picture without help. Oh, and back in the day (before ingredients mattered, and Pull-ups were invented), we potty-trained during warm weather and gave them Popsicles to stay on the pot. It was like a continuous participation award--"Give 'em a Popsicle"--just for sitting there actually.
In the beginning...
8 years, 1 month, and 6 days ago at something between 2 and 3am in the first few hours of this site being launched I signed up from a mobile phone browser and acquired account #30. I still remember being annoyed that the public release happened to fall while I was on a multi...
@Mitch I just thought I should explain our (only 20 people in the world probably) weird idiom, I guess you would call it. People are getting touchy. I don't even really know the gender of practically everyone that I really like and respect on here. From your profile pic, I guess you're male. From mine, I'm obviously a 30-something woman who still thinks she's cute. See? Who knows. Let's start a revolution--make them really singular.
@Mitch 1) I would've bet $20 on that (or $40 because it's payday). 2) I'm too old to use the words like avatar. 3) I mean really, like...Did you talk to Ted yesterday? Yes, I talked to them for hours. 4) I have to google Sapir-Whorf now (thanks, Uncle Mitch), spend money, and find a rainforest...and fireproof Pull-ups. 5) Summer is never over; it's not a state of mind, it's in your heart.
Conversing with the South Wind
Shush, shush… What do you hear? Maple leaves rustling, Crisp and clear.
Flurry, scurry… Where do you go? In search of a bobwhite, High and low.
Pitter, patter… Why do you cry? Summer is over ah-gain, Goodbye.
@Cerberus, meh why are you giving me things to read. I've long forgotten how reading works.
If they are suddenly stripping off people's mod privileges, there's no point in people giving up mod privileges.
If you're robbing me, I can't express that it's hugely unfair by giving you all my money.
Actually, maybe I should read it after all and take all those people's names. Maybe if I steal all their pianos, they'll protest by giving me all their harps and cellos, too.
I could make a business out of this.
Lol WTF why is this about gender pronouns.
That's a non-issue in English. I have never, ever, referred to anyone by any pronoun other than "you".
It would be a nightmare in Japanese, and even in Russian or French or Dutch it can be occasionally difficult. But in English that is just not a thing that exists.
> In fact for the scope of this site we've gone so far as to allow any established viewpoint to self identify as 'Christian'. At the end of the day when we stand before the judgement seat it will be apparent that not all of those groups were really Christian
That's a very non-Christian thing to say.
I am saying that as an Orthodox Christian.
Do not judge, it says in the Bible.
Also, there'll be no judgement seat. You die and then the worms eat you.
And I'm definitely not doing that at the end of the day, either. I've got piano lessons to give tomorrow.
You think you know what the surprise is only because I never told you about the twist. And my telling you that there'd be a twist is no spoiler either, because maybe there's a double twist. And so on.
It's like that other guy with that other gay Greek name.
@Mitch well good thing I wasn't able to find the meta ever again ever since they changed the design.
I can only recommend you do likewise.
What, you have no life? You need entertainment? Go write a symphony right now.
People might remember that in a hundred years.
Nobody will remember anything from the meta of today.
Also, I've been stripped of or given up mod privileges before, I don't even remember which one it was (possibly both, actually, on two several occasions? I genuinely do not remember) and I can tell you for a fact that it's no biggie.
It's not even a tempest in a teapot. There is no teapot.
@Mitch yes, and that right there makes me think that the people involved are involved way too much, and could do with a little bit of getting less involved.
Anyone who wants to be a politician is unfit to be a politician. Anyone who wants to be a policeman or a soldier must be kept out of the police or armed forces at all costs.
@Mitch no, it's the boy who dated the horse face in Cex and the Sity.
Yes, and I've heard Sweden is renaming most of their sites to ...Nazi, too.
Sweden haven't had a proper war in what, three hundred years now?
When Tchaikovsky wrote his violin concerto, he didn't sit on the Internet complaining how people wouldn't call him a he or a she or a gay or a motorcycle.
And that's why we still remember his name to this day.
Those people who sit on the Internet complaining, you don't know their names already today.
So I say, let them do their thing. Literally nobody cares. They will all die in disgrace.
Can anyone tell me what the suffix “‑fu” stands for in the following sentence?
If you want to take advantage of some other Spring-fu, like some of its aspect-oriented features, then you’ll need to use this heavy-handed, direct object management technique.
Like, Samuel Andreyev always comes up with the instrumentation first. If he hasn't decided on what exact instruments he'll be using to do what effect, he can't write anything. There'll be no piece. There won't be a single note.
@marcellothearcane also yeah on the violin I'm finding you absolutely have to record yourself. I can remember a couple minutes worth of music that I've improvized on the piano or guitar. On the violin, it's all gone from my memory the very second that the sound is gone from the air.
@marcellothearcane Sorry for being slow. What Jeff Atwood did was curse and throw swear words at many of the most respected users of this site, tell us the whole site was bad and ought to be close (I think), and he treated one of our most respected, most knowledgeable moderators, Kosmonaut, so poorly that he felt forced to leave the site.
@RegDwigнt See, that's the trouble. We never seem to agree or disagree. Our conversations are of the Schrödinger's cat variety, yet even when we open the box we can't tell if the cat is alive or dead.
In my haste to be provocative, I didn't quite give the whole picture. It's not that I mind the occasional cleanup, etc. I just don't want to feel compelled to do scut work around here.
