@MattE.Эллен I watched the vote last night live again. =)

@Jasper another no suprise result
it's going just like the news said it would. which implies they'll be asking for an extension to article 50, and the Eu will ask "why?" and then i don't know what will happen. a "no deal" Brexit, I assume

there's something weird in the English speaking mindset that when given the opportunity to spell out "dunno" we gave it two ns
would one n encourage people to pronounce it as "dune oh"?

@RegDwigнt what about a conclusion ?

2:22 PM
@RegDwigнt 53 miles west of Planet Hollywood, which is next door to Planet Fitness. Hear about it all on the Planet Money podcast or your local NPR station.
@Færd I thought he was referring to the future German Kanzlerin Anna Regret Knechtknödel.
lecker!
@Færd :)

@Mitch Hi, how are you?
@Mitch Please, Could you help me to write a conclusion about TV

2:49 PM
@Educ Hi, how's it going!

@Mitch so so and you?

@Educ Chrome just died on me... too many browser tabs with audio and video auto playing I think

@Mitch ctrl+F4 solve the problem

3:05 PM
@Educ I also had to go back through tabs and kill some that are 'bad actors'
for some reason, magazines and news sources tend to be the worst, with all the self playing ads.
@Educ anyway, if you write something, I can critique it

@Mitch Okay, I see Good luck (you can install ads remover I don't know what OS you use), I will jot down my Introduction and criticize it, please

@Educ I have an adblocker but even then there's all sorts of crap that gets through.
@Educ wait, are you writing a Conclusion or an Introduction?

both Intro and conclusion
@Mitch

Oh. How long are these going to be? Are you also writing the middle part?

3:22 PM
no
@Mitch only the Intro and conclusion
@Mitch Introduction : Life was simple before television came about. People either worked or talked. Family and friends would gather around and tell stories or talk about daily events. At times they would find entertainment from print media. Once the radio was invented, their source of entertainment also came from that.

Many people relied on radios and newspapers for information. However, this form of communication was not the best solution when one was trying to quickly obtain news with details. For example, when The United States bombed Hiroshima, the radio wasn't able to describe it as
Could you please paraphrase it with simple words

@Educ What? Why do you want me to paraphrase it? That sounds like work!

@Mitch okay could you criticize it, Please

Before I do that, I'm assuming that the first paragraph is the intro, and the 2nd paragraph is the conclusion. Where is the middle part, the rest of the essay?

no, the last part is part of Intro there is no middle I have only write Introduction about TV ( Life before TV and How and why TV came about. How it became gradually accepted
@Mitch

3:41 PM
OK
Weird
That doesn't make sense. (that that is all you have to write). Did the teacher say "Write only an Intro and a conclusion paragraph." ?
Also, is the first paragraph the intro? and the second paragraph the Conclusion?
Side note: grammar, spelling, vocabulary are all perfectly fine. In fact there is nothing about it that is wrong with respect to the English language. So anything I say is more about thought and presentation.

@Mitch No, the middle is going to be done by other students

@Mitch are you good at reviewing English articles?

3:56 PM
hiroshima is it a good example and reasons to Illustrate that Why TV came Out

@CaptainBohemian No, not at all. Or rather there is no evidence I can produce to you that would convince you of it.
@Educ OK, that explains what is going on. This is why context matters.

@Mitch Yes, sorry I didn't tell you That, please, what about Hiroshima is it good ?

@Educ 'Hiroshima' as an example is good for showing that the images provided by TV are much more interesting than simple speech on radio or single images in newspapers. But...
But any kind of example seems out of place in an intro. Examples go in the body of the essay, not in the intro or conclusion. You should give this example to your colleagues, for them to put in the part they write.

@Mitch Yes but My intro will be short and I won't able to answer why Tv came Out

(if this were an expository article, then you may want to start your first sentence with an example. But this is an essay, so examples go most likely in the middle parts.

4:03 PM
@Mitch I often have the issue of whether my cover letter and research interests write well.

@Educ But the intro and conclusion are not the places where you come up wth the answer. That's for the middle part.

@Mitch It's not an essay it's a presentation with power point abotu TV

@Educ Then you've confused me entirely. A powerpoint presentation can be all sorts of things. I thought you were writing an essay with other class members. An school essay has a general form to it. I don't know what kind of form your teacher expects for a power point.

@Mitch Sorry again I put you in a different context. now is it okay to give this example in Intro

@CaptainBohemian Ah. chat is just a place where people talk. It's not a free proofreading service. Educ asked and I ws here and I just out of courtesy and I'm bored and have time and he's chatted here a while ago some, so I thought why not. I'd expect most people on here would not bother.

4:10 PM
Outline: Introduction contains (to talk quickly about life before TV+how and why it came out+how was gradually accepted )

(also chat is very asynchronous, so I and others are not necessarily here for a fixed amount of time to do something. so at any point people may just have to leave)

@Mitch 1- what is a TV 2 how did it work 3 the evolution of TV 4 the advantages finally conclusion my part is Intro and Conclusion

(I think I've been treating it more like a forum. I asked a question days ago and have persistently not been around when I got replies.)

@Educ OK... because I have absolutely no idea what is going on now, I can't really judge/critique your two paragraphs (I have no idea if that will end up on the screen or not or if you'll use it as background commentary to the powerpoint). But I will say some general things about the ideas in general.

@Mitch don't worry that much. I have never bothered anybody to prrof-read any of my documents. On the contrary, there are people on web asking me to proofread their documents.

4:14 PM
@LemmaPrism well, whatever may have been advertised, at least on ELU chat, it's just a bunch of people saying stuff that interests them, and they just happen to (often but not always) be either ELU mods or people who have spent time on ELU.

@Mitch I would appreciate any ideas/ help

Because I have the habit of doubting others. Even the way my MSc supervisor suggested me about my thesis was doubted by me.

@Educ OK. Let me gather my thoughts..
@CaptainBohemian Everything is learning.

@Mitch okay take your time in meanwhile, I will jot down my conclusion to see my thoughts

I think my MSc supervisor is not good at writing embellished articles.

4:18 PM
@Educ You're presenting two pairs and showing how they go together: simple life - complicated life, and separately before TV and after TV, and supposedly the whole powerpoint shows that TV and moving images help get across this newer more difficult life more easily. That is: moving images makes the modern complicated life easier to understand.
I think that's what you're trying to get across from the feeling of those two paragraphs, but I feel like you're not connecting those up just right.

I think only scientific peers can really do proof-reading.
because only they know your field knowledge.

sometimes you say 'newspapers and radio' sometimes just radio and sometimes entertainment. So that muddles things a bit.

other people can only suggest stylish way of writing.

I would suggest not to mention entertainment as that introduces different issues. stick with talking about news.
And you say "quickly obtain news with details". But that's too vague with respect to the difference between radio/newspapers on one hand and TV on the other.
So my suggestion for that is to say "quickly understand what is really happening in the news with moving images" with the expectation that a single photograph can be telling but that a movie clip can say so much more (you powerpoint/essay/whatever for class is too short to go into the differences between a single photo and a short movie, so we'll have to assume that it is obvious, just like 'a picture is worth a thousand words')

@Mitch this presentation about TV with respect to a class called: Media, the first presentation was about Radio and our presentation will be about Tv

4:25 PM
@Educ OK.
I gave my assessment/suggestions. If you have any questions about it I'd be happy to answer, just remember to ping.

@Mitch Okay Thank you so much, I'll do

there are a lot of proof-reading services on web, but I wouldn't trust them unless they are my scientific peers.

@Mitch Can I show them this image

my MSc supervisor works as English reviewer for Chinese physics journal.

@Mitch as you can see people at that time can read and work and tell stories before TV

4:31 PM
@Educ It all depends n what you say along with that image.
You'll want to have a contrasting image that shows how a movie clip is so much more informative. You'll also want to contrast with a newspaper with single photo.
Note that historically most people (at least in the US and Japan at the time) did not have a TV, so the Hiroshima bomb would not have relevant examples on TV.

I just wonder how he can review the English of all papers disregarding their fields. When I read professional articles not of my fields, I don't always know what they are talking about.

@Mitch I see, I will search for a photo that shows those contrast and I'm not going to use Hiroshima bomb as an example.
It's irrelevant

4:52 PM
@Mitch check the new Intro I tried to follow your instruction. I will keep the same photo and say the following text :
Life was simple before television came about. People either worked or talked. Family and friends would gather around and tell stories or talk about daily events.
Many people relied on radios and newspapers for information. However, this form of communication was not the best solution when one was trying to quickly obtain news with details. Because, quickly understand what is really happening in the news with moving images with the expectation that a single photograph can be telling but that a movie clip can say so much more, That’s why Television came out

"Because, quickly understand what is really happening in the news with moving images with the expectation that a single photograph can be telling but that a movie clip can say so much more, That’s why Television came out"
This is a bit of a run on sentence with no actual subject. It bounces around from 'quickly understand' to moving images to single photograph then back to movie clip. I find it very hard to understand its intention. All the words seem to have something relevant to the subject, but they don't combine in order coherently.

5:14 PM
@Mitch I don't know how to make it coherently, please check my conclusion :
we are bombarded by information, and we are consumers then we don't have to consume everything we get from this means of communication, we have to select, we have to argue, we have to criticize, we have to analyze before consuming, we should never take things for granted, we have not to be passive consumers, we have to use our mind to criticize what we watching it.

5:31 PM
@Educ Style wise, you have a lot of sentences linked together (this is a run-on sentence). Sometimes you want to do this but usually not.
Only one grammar point:"we have to use our mind to criticize what we are watching"

@Mitch even it's the speech, should I avoid run-on sentence?

@Educ In general yes. Sometimes you do want the effect, especially with repetition, but that's often a rhetorical device used to be memorable. LIke in a call to war:
My guess is that you probably don't want to do that for power point in a class.
That last thing I said is an example of 'understatement'. You really don't want to use run-on sentences. they're usually a sign of confusion or inability to make a coherent point

1 hour later…
6:47 PM
For your reading pleasure on Pi day: The first 100,000 digits of pi.
Me, I prefer the other kind.
Gimme a slice and I don't need no 100,000 digits. Five will do, wielding a fork.

If the dough is good, I'll take it!

Of course it's not good. It's a promotional food shot. You don't want to eat the stuff that's designed to look good.
Seriously.
They use white paper glue to simulate milk, they varnish roast chicken skin, ice cubes are special plastic, etc.

Hah.

But it does look tasty. I'll give it that.

To be honest, the pie does not look very good.

6:56 PM
Looks good to me. Cherry pie is my favorite.

The dough looks white.
And the stuff in between the cherries I don't trust.

Well, you can eat your rutabagas or whatever you like. I'll take cherry pie any day.
In fact, my wife always bakes a cherry pie for my birthday because I don't like cake.

I'll take a cherry pie with a slightly darker crust and with a filling I know I can trust.
Is a cake more birthday-like to you than a pie?

Cake is the traditional birthday confection here.

Here we bake a taart for one's birthday.

6:58 PM
Only not at my house.

And how would you define cake?
Soft dough?

A birthday cake is a cake eaten as part of a birthday celebration in many world traditions. Variations of the typical birthday cake include birthday cupcakes, cake pops, pastries, and tarts. While there is not a universal standard regarding taste, birthday cakes are often vanilla-, chocolate-, or strawberry-flavored. They are also baked in a variety of shapes and decorated in one color or multiple colors with icing or fondant. == History == Birthday cakes have been a part of birthday celebrations in Western European countries since the middle of the 19th century. However, the link between cakes...

This is the most typical confection we'd call a cake in Dutch.

Cake is ... cake. It's cakey.

7:00 PM
@Cerberus We'd call that pound cake.

This you would probably also call a cake.
Because of the texture of the dough, I think?

Could be. I've never cared for the stuff myself.

@Robusto Right, I've heard that.
@Robusto I know few people who do!
That kind of dough/crust is just not great.

I normally don't care for sweets. Except for fruit.
An occasional chocolate.

Fruit is very common in taarten!

7:02 PM
A Clif bar when I'm riding to keep my glucose up.

I often make tartes au citron, the French way.

Hmm. Sounds tasty.

You probably know the kind.

Yep.

You would probably call that a (piece of) tart?

7:05 PM
It's a kind of pie here. Like lemon meringue without the meringue.
Or key lime pie.

Ah.
In the Cooking room (Seasoned Advice), I believe they call it a tart.

Key lime pie is an American dessert pie made of Key lime juice, egg yolks, and sweetened condensed milk in a pie crust. The traditional Conch version uses the egg whites to make a meringue topping. The dish is named after the small Key limes (Citrus aurantifolia 'Swingle') that are naturalized throughout the Florida Keys. While their thorns make them less tractable, and their thin, yellow rinds more perishable, Key limes are more tart and more aromatic than the common Persian limes seen year-round at grocery stores in the United States. Key lime juice, unlike regular lime juice, is a pale yellow...

But they like their terminology.

I like it without the meringue, myself.

So do I.

7:07 PM
I'm not trying to portray myself as abstemious. I just don't like overly sweet things.

Do you like hard meringue?

Not sure I've had it. All meringue here seems to be puffy.

Doesn't look familiar?

so hungry now; it's pity these cakes here can't be really eaten.

It's basically the same thing, but baked for a long time, so that they become crisp.
@CaptainBohemian Alas!

7:08 PM
@Cerberus Crisp is good.

Indeed.
They are very sweet, though.

Yeah ... no.

You've never eaten a pavlova?

Never heard of that.
Is it like baklava?

I'm still amazed that a question that involves religious belief gets so much traction. I despair. (Can I say that grammatically: "I despair"?)

7:10 PM
You can despair.

@Robusto Thanks

It is a large, semi-hard meringue, with whipped cream and fruit on top.

Looks good. Only I don't eat fresh strawberries. Have a mild allergy to them.

You can put any fruit you like on them.

7:11 PM
Not the anaphylactic shock kind, but the "my throat is itchy" kind.

It's a big bite of fluffiness and fruit.
Too bad!

Sometimes I get that with cantaloupe.

I have something like that with kiwi.

Yeah. Some kind of enzyme, no doubt.

@Cerberus Tomato?

7:13 PM
Another pavlova.
@Keepthesemind If you like...
Or monkshood berries.

I will have to try a pavlova. Is it a Russian dish?

Wiki says it is from Down Under, inspired by a certain Russian dancer.

Hmm.

'Invented' in the 1920s.

I see lots of food in this room.

7:17 PM
I'm hungry now.

Have you tried...eating something?

I am really hungry then I entered this room, which is by chance filled with cakes.

@Cerberus Wait ... are you trying to be Captain Obvious?

Are you?
There can be only one captain on this ship.

No. I'm Captain Subtle.

7:22 PM
How subtle of you; I almost didn't get it.

QED

7:44 PM
it's raining.

@Robusto WTF is that. Wikipedia actually has an article on birthday cake, but still none about myself? What a joke.
They delete the article on the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, which is a unique thing, but keep birthday cake, of which every instance is completely different, and the leftovers are tossed in the garbage by the thousands every single day IRL?

@RegDwigнt I'm sure you're just as tasty, but you're simply not a tradition yet. You have to die first, I think.

7:59 PM
I don't think birthday cake has died yet, has he now?

If he hasn't, he's being eaten alive every day. Sort of a latter-day Prometheus, I expect.

Mar 13 '13 at 0:58, by RegDwighт
Let the mighty igel soar.
Prometheus has nöone to blame but himself. Clearly he went to the Prometheus school of running-away-from-things.

That's what he gets for giving chumps like you fire.
Must ... get ... more ... honey for the tea. Back anon.

CU
I don't need no fire. What am I supposed to do with that, bake cake?
Paco did this, but he also added passion fruit and someone by the name of Grace.
So clearly fire by itself is of little use to musicians.
Why did I ever bother buying things if all of them are on YouTube now in their entirety.

8:22 PM
The Baader-Meinhof effect, also known as frequency illusion, is the illusion in which a word, a name, or other thing that has recently come to one's attention suddenly seems to appear with improbable frequency shortly afterwards (not to be confused with the recency illusion or selection bias). It was named in 1994 after the West German Baader-Meinhof group, when a commentator on the St. Paul Pioneer Press online discussion board reported starting to hear the group's name repeatedly after learning about them for the first time. == See also == List of cognitive biases == References... ==
When was it deleted?

8:32 PM
@Cerberus you mean when will it be deleted again.
Look at the history. It's from January 8 this very year.
We complained about it having been deleted as far back as in ELU's open-beta days.

2 hours later…
10:12 PM
Chávez and Merkel in those charts made me laugh.

1 hour later…
11:37 PM
@Færd why would you laugh? They're reasonable markets of extremes on the 'populism' scale.
