I just learned that the word "sliver" can in fact be pronounced /ˈslaɪvər/ (!!!), and this is in fact more consistent with its etymology (apparently from a strong verb "to slive") than the pronunciation I have always used and heard, /ˈslɪvər/. Astonishing! I guess it's similar to "long-lived" and so on, but that's a somewhat formal word, so a spelling-pronunciation makes some sense for me there. But "sliver" seems colloquial enough that it seems odd to suppose it developed a spelling-pron.
I wonder if the development of /ˈslɪvər/ was influenced by anything other than the spelling.

Q: "Here you are" In front of whom can we use?

iPatelI know "Here you are" use when something is in my hand and want to give it to someone, at that time we are using sentence like "here you are". Here I think "Here it is" is more understandable. BTW my question is on "Here you are"! Should we use in front of any respectable person or boss or etc.?

Q: The opposite of xenophobia

JimmeryNo. I'm not talking about xenophilia. In both these senses, xenophobia and xenophilia relate to foreigners or strangers. I am looking for a fear of the same people who live in the same country as you, not foreigners but localers, so to speak. Essentially I am looking for the opposite of xeno....

@Feeds I'd say autophobia, but I think Americans would take it the wrong way

@MattE.Эллен How dare you. This is a family site.

8:07 PM
@MattE.Эллен That would be correct!

@Cerberus Wouldn't it be homophobia, actually? You're not scared of yourself, you're scared of those like yourself.

Google Translate says that compatriot in Greek is sympatriótis so I'd guess it's sympatriophobia if anything.

Heh, OK, but that's modern. It would be sympatriotofobia if you want to be precise.
Hmm. That actually works and would be instantly understood in modern Greek.

@terdon Also possible!
But the idea might include the self.

is it ok to say "we have struck a deal" instead of "we have made a deal" when talking to a friend?
is it formal?

11:13 PM
Probably not so much formal as make a deal is informal.

Q: Word for a ballad about a hero

PhlebasI'm looking for a word that means a ballad that is specifically about a hero. I know an epic is a super long poem about a hero and doesn't necessarily have a set meter. A ballad is a song-like poem that has a set rhyme scheme and meter (usually), but doesn't imply a heroic topic. I need a combina...

@Færd Interesting app but I think I like seeing the surrounding words, deciding what I'm going to skip, how long the sentence is, etc. I get a lot of info from the overall appearance. I go back and forth to pick up something I think I missed. (This may be useful for people with dyslexia.)
