@Xanne Yeah, that's the catch. You lose the spatial sense of the text. But for casual reading it could be useful.
Then again, you don't usually read every single word when skimming or scanning through something.
For me, the use is to gradually set it to go faster and faster, to hopefully help with my reading speed.

8:51 AM
@Færd I read a study a long time ago that said that good readers decode every word (this was based on analyzing eye movements, in think). You have to know whether it says "not" or "now", or you get it wrong. But I skip chunks of text where I don't want the descriptive detail or whatever--and I'm probably scanning for key words coming up. I was comfortable at 250, but found 400 a little difficult.
I just don't think I'd be able to recall a sentence presented in single flash-card words. I wouldn't know what the relative pronouns represented, stuff like that.

I migrated a comment thread to a chatroom. This automatically left a link to the chatroom in the comment thread. I just had a report that the link was borked. Has anybody else run into this? See:

Q: Natural usage of the full verb 'have' in an imperative, as in "Have you one!"

ClareA year ago in a local hamburger joint in rural Arkansas a cousin of about 40 years age, born and bred in the area (rural Arkansas, USA), held up a plate of fries or cookies or similar and invited me to have one. In fact their very imperative (acting as an invitation) was Have you one! ...

@MetaEd Dunno the story, but that first link is certainly borked.

@tchrist Right, and I don't remember editing it so I assume it was borked by the thread migrator.

There's no edit mark, so that one's an original.

@MetaEd @tchrist Does the second link work for either of you from a phone? It doesn't work for me from a phone even though it does from a traditional PC.

I dunno, I'd have to go find a phone.

That's ok.

On my PC: the first link does not work, the second link does. I'll try now from a phone. Do you mean the phone app, or the mobile site, or the full site?

@MetaEd Not the app. I'm not sure about the difference between the other two, but it looks like the full site.

@Lawrence In the app, both links work.
I notice the room is deleted for inactivity. So maybe the link redirection isn't working for deleted chatrooms.

2:58 PM
@MetaEd Oops, sorry - it was the other way around. It works in the full site from a phone but not from the mobile app.

@Lawrence In the mobile site, the first link fails, the second link works.

@MetaEd On my phone's browser, the URL starts with https://english.stackexchange.com/. I take that to mean it's the full site, viewed from a phone - 1st link doesn't work, 2nd works.
From the app, I get 'page not found' in both cases, overlaid with the message "Welcome to The Stack Exchange Network chat! You'll need 20 reputation to talk here. This site is moderated by the community, so please be respectful of your fellow The Stack Exchange Network users. And while you're at it, check out the FAQ!"
@MetaEd Leaving this with you and the site's programmers now. Thanks for looking into it.

Q: Word for a thought long present but not spoken or written until now

TotoUse case: she expressed the that-word thought. What I mean is, she pondered for quite a long time on it. Not only that, the thought itself was expected sooner by a person she talks to. Like a week ago for example.

7:36 PM
@Xanne As good readers indeed do. But too often you just automatically guess a lot of those based on the context and the tone. It happens in verbal communication too. And that's about my range of comfort too. Did you grow up using a European alphabet?
@Xanne Give it a try. Allow for some adaption. Use it on a non-too-complex piece. You'd be surprised.
