@MetaEd You have a nice pumpkin.

2:27 AM
@tchrist Yes. I couldn't IPA the Spanish differently for anything but the 'a', even though I can sorta tell that something is slightly different for all those.
@tchrist Oh. I still don't buy the 'tree' = /tʃrij/ thing. It's just as aspirated as in 'tee'.
@MattE.Эллен Oh. I thought it was funny because are beans hollow? I don't know!

@Mitch [k] is unaspirated unlike English in that position so sounds like a [b] to English speakers at times, [ä] is centralized [a], [s̺] is apical unlike English so sounds thicker, [t̪] is a dental so unlike all but a few small dialects in English [ɾ] is a coronal tap [o̞] is a centralized [o]
@Mitch A lot of people say chree. A whole whole lot of ’em.
To these people, tree and cherry have a lot of similarities, including beginning with an affricate.

@tchrist I've read that and I hear that those sound different for Spanish speakers, but it's really hard for me to put those together.
@tchrist I think they're wrong. in all sorts of ways. probably prefer vi.

@Mitch Instead of making a /t/ by touching your alveolar ridge, make it by touching your teeth.

and open their soft boiled eggs at the other end. I mean,how do they get the spoon in right?
@tchrist Oh. yeah I can sorta see that.

The reason you truly must do that dental [t̪] is because otherwise your tongue is unable to move to the [ɾ], which is just tapping the alveolar ridge!

2:35 AM
I feel like Cristofer's question is a bit parochial.

Since /ɾ/ and /r/ (those are phonemes with minimal pairs: pero, perro) have to hit the alveolar ridge, the /t/ has to be elsewhere.
@Mitch He doesn’t understand how an English speaker cannot hear that the last vowel in amigo does not reduce and shorten, and has no extra lip-rounding.
They think the version they say that does those things is the same and the version in Spanish or Italian etc that does not are the same. But they are so far apart that one is a "bad accent".

I just learned that Irish has the sequence /ghl/ which is a voiced uvular fricative followed by a lateral. They are messed up.

ugly

@tchrist he doesn't understand that spelling is different from pronunciation, or that different languages are different.
@tchrist oh... they have /dl/, which is probably worse, and very un-Indo-European

@Mitch Oh you mean [ʁ] not [ɣ] or [x] or [χ[
French and Portuguese have [ʁ].
@Mitch atlatl

2:39 AM
I think it is [ʁ], uvular, not velar
@tchrist right.

English speakers say at-lat-l. But Nahuatl provides a-tla-tl
And that is that not a normal L.

what letter(s) does Portuguese use for [ʁ]?

It’s graphemic r or rr, depending.

@tchrist it's the 'tl' of 'bottle'

Basically [ʁ] occurs in (some) Portuguese speakers where [r] is found in Spanish speakers.

2:46 AM
@Cerberus Oh ok that means it is taking into account area (the color is proportional to population of the area divided by area. But there's stil the problem that the color is spread over the entire shape, when in a larger area, there'll be centers of denser area and big areas that are sparse.
In most any American voting map, San Bernadino county in California is almost as big as Vermont/NH, but only the western most slice is populated and the rest desert. So it often shows up as a large dark area, darker all the way over very unpopulated areas

@Mitch No such county.

@tchrist I'm trying not to let facts get in the way of my opinions.

What you like to buy a consonant?

@tchrist wait...

Yes, and?

2:52 AM
It's the big green one in the south east

Oh, that's San Bernardino. You should have said that. :)
I hope you realize you’ve just outed yourself as a closet arrhotic.

arrhotic?

@Mitch A very close personal friend of mine had to root around the entire source tree fixing that typo.
@0celo7 Yes.

Haha. I prefer to say kerfluffle, so there's a conservation of liquids.

3:36 AM
@Mitch Indeed, one loses precision.
It all depends on the purpose of the map which depiction or representation one chooses.

When you use your creativity to take something common and combine it with a theme, how is it called? A twist? For example let's take parkour. Instead of teaching your trainees parkour movements you think how your trainees could is it in their life. Like getting from point A to point B using parkour skill when normally getting there by bus would take 3 times longer. So I now made boring parkour movements into something interesting and my trainees would now save their time using parkour skill.
Don't know if it would be right to call this a twist, idea or spinoff. Here's another example. You take make something common into exciting and interesting by introducing into it something popular, that is known by masses so that trainees could apply it in real life. Maybe there is a movie where people liked main hero's way of accomplishing some kind of a feat which they could use in real life so combining parkour with what hero did would let audience do same thing?

@tchrist Can you open a private chat room? There are posts that you need to delete.
You can ping me when you see this message.

user227867
9:55 AM
@Rathony Actually, you can just flag for mod attention on those posts, or cast your delete votes. To ask a mod to delete those posts unilaterally like that is circumventing the democratic process of casting deletion votes, and making the mod an instrument of your own viewpoints, if this is taken to the extreme, which may or may not be so in this case.

10:15 AM
@WillHunting Hi, Will. Thanks for the comment. This situation is very unique and very difficult to explain. All those posts are locked and can't be deleted by other users.

10:34 AM
@Mitch it's funny because of many reasons

Is J O S H a native speaker? It seems he is not. It seems he speaks Italian natively.

10:56 AM
No idea.

user227867
@MattE.Эллен Oh, I am deleting all my accounts except for ELU. I will keep ELU, so don't worry. =)

@WillHunting People can be native speakers of multiple languages though. For example when they have parents who each speak a different language.

user227867
@terdon Indeed. But I have a feeling Josh isn't one though because of some of his posts here.

No idea.
His English's not too bad, anyway :P

user227867

Barrie England, J O S H, and Robusto now have about 118k, 116k, and 114k respectively. These approximate values are in arithmetic progression.

user227867
@Rathony I see. Thank you for telling me. I just read your profile and would like you to know that usually italics is used for emphasis. It is strange that you chose to emphasise the word native. Perhaps the word to be emphasised there should be not.

user227867
To add three numbers in arithmetic progression, it seems we merely have to triple the middle one.

11:24 AM
@WillHunting Well, that's the way I decided to write it when I joined ELU. I don't remember exactly why I did that.
Does it read that weird?

@Mitch I thought you were an atheist. Sorry for replying to an old message. I was just reading the transcript because, well, was free.
See ya

@Arrowfar Wow...that's some good trawling.

Religion is complex. There's mystical belief, there's day-to-day culture, there's political/people organizing, there's ethical systems.

And hello!

I was oversimplifying considerably

1:11 PM

Also unfortunately a lot of religion gets bound up with ethnicity which is also bound up with race.

which nestles beside gender, which co-mingles with sexuality

Like being Jewish can mean Shabbat (no electricity/cooking) on Saturdays or it can mean that the ancestors of your mother came from Palestine 2000 years ago
and those are not the same at all.
@MattE.Эллен what is that called... intersectional?

@Mitch I believe so

1:16 PM

@tchrist I'm guessing Ding Dongs next?

how many licks does it take to get to the centre of a doughnut?

@Arrowfar Also, I don't identify as atheist (I think 'identify' means something)

@Mitch ah I see.

(which is not to say I'm a believer)

1:43 PM
@MattE.Эллен Sometimes I miss the notion of “standard broadcast English” when I mishear a word due to a regional accent.
This happens to me more and more as Angelinos replace Midwesterners in broadcast news. I don’t speak Angelino so I’m constantly confused.

maybe change.org would host a petition to standardise the American accent ;D

We already had one. :(

oh! oh dear

Then the Angelinos sent me haring off to the shortwave operators to check on them comming the storm. Orville, I tell you.

Orville the Duck was the most famous puppet often used by the ventriloquist Keith Harris (1947–2015) and was named after Orville Wright (one of the Wright Brothers). Orville is a green duckling who wears nothing but a nappy with a large safety pin on the front. He speaks with a falsetto voice. Orville appeared on BBC television from 1982 to 1990 on The Keith Harris Show, which featured assorted puppets such as Orville the Duck and Cuddles the Monkey. At the peak of their popularity in December 1982, Harris and Orville released the single "Orville's Song", reaching number 4 in the UK Singles Chart...

Working-age American professionals know three languages?

UK is conspicuous in its absence

Three Americans know a language
@MattE.Эллен What is 'EU28'? Maybe there's no data available. Or maybe they'll make it public once the audit is done.

@Mitch I assumed it was the group in the image, but there are only 25, so it could be that there isn't UK data

Lichtenstein is missing. That is telling.

2:10 PM
so is the vatican

24. Don't count the average 'EU28'

also I don't see a date
@Mitch I didn't

I think the vatican is 100% because they all have to speak Latin. Also, it has no residents.
so 100%/0 = whatever you want to be.

@Mitch I miscounted twice

@MattE.Эллен Once more and you'll make a left

2:12 PM
It’s not especially surprising that Romansh and Dutch speakers know another language that more people speak, not to mention Manx and Cornish.

@tchrist Yes, but you'd think Hungary would at least try a little harder.

Hungarian is hard.
You can't leg-up on much else using it.
That explains it.

I'm surprised that Gemany is so high. I think people are a bit wishful in their answers
@tchrist They could try Basque. No one would have a leg up there.
All the Basque I know I've learned from terrorist graffiti.

The reason 51% of Spaniards know a foreign language is because the Catalan, Galician, and Basque speakers learn Spanish.

@Mitch same for me and English

2:17 PM

Today is a wonderful day: no more October Surprises!

@MattE.Эллен missing are Malta, UK, Ireland, and Croatia. Liechtenstein/Andorra/San Marino/Vatican are ... ugly red-headed step children?

Not many redheads in those parts.

@Mitch Malta is in there
beneath Sweden
above Estonia

@tchrist I love the idea of October Surprises, but then I open them up and bleurgh.

2:24 PM
@Mitch And inside you find a Christmas present!

@MattE.Эллен Oh. I never liked malteds. Explains a lot.
@tchrist and the xmas present is a puppy. but because no airholes were cut into the box, it's a dead puppy.

if you grind it up you can have a puppy patty
if you add some ground pepper, you can have a peppery puppy patty
with the right seasoning it would be a piquant peppery puppy patty
if enough people wanted it, it would be a popular piquant peppery puppy patty

Don’t those come in pecks?
mac(tchrist)% units pints pecks

How many peppery puppy patties can a peppery puppy patty packer pack in a peck?

2:52 PM
probably plenty

Post pictures please

3:24 PM
pintrest's paltry pictures prove puppyless

@MattE.Эллен And if you wanted an easy starter mix to roll into patties, you'd have a popular piquant peppery puppy patty putty.
And if you wanted to play golf with them, you'd have a popular piquant peppery puppy patty putty putter

@tchrist I wanted to talk to you in a private chat room before things get out of control. But, you need to read this. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/286515/…

And f it was made out of a tin alloy, you'd have a popular piquant peppery puppy patty pewter putty putter
If the spice was from a cottonwood tree, you'd have a popular poplar piquant peppery puppy patty pewter putty putter
and if that tree was from the vatican, it would be a popular papal poplar piquant peppery puppy patty pewter putty putter

@Mitch There's no way that's true. The French, Spanish and Italians might claim to speak English, they may even believe it, but it's just wrong. Finding a Greek that doesn't speak at least a little English is very hard these days.

@terdon I agree. But it's hard to complain given the US score. You're lucky if an American knows English.

3:39 PM
@Mitch Although the percentage of Spanish speakers is rising pretty fast.

Obviously everything is different restricted to the educated (for all countries)
@terdon right (even excluding the large native born native Spanish speaking population)

But yeah, it's just that I can't believe Italy, France and Spain are above Greece in that list. The first three can't speak anything else worth a damn. Well, unless the Italians count their dialects which would be fair enough.

@terdon Well, as tchrist mentioned, in Spain, the large number of native Catalan speakers count Spanish rightfully as a 2nd language

Yes, that's also fair.
Or third even, in some cases.

also 'bilingual' is a strong term. knowing a language from school doesn't really make you bilingual. I'll give a pass at getting by with it at work.
and if an academic wrote a report about all this it would be a popular papal poplar piquant peppery puppy patty pewter putty putter paper
I'm not getting a peep about this. You're not very peppy today.

3:46 PM
@Mitch Aww. Popular papal poplar piquant peppery puppy patty pewter putty putter paper pity party.

@MetaEd So the UN can go póg do thóin? You've gone over to the dark side?

@Mitch There's a bright side?

@MetaEd We'll always have Nutella?

4:00 PM
what have I created?

I see. no regrets

Q: When can users delete their posts?

AraucariaIn this question on Meta here: How does deleting work? What can cause a post to be deleted, and what does that actually mean? What are the criteria for deletion? it says that users can delete their own answers. I regularly review my own posts on EL&U and ELL and delete any that I feel are eit...

Uh

1 hour later…
5:24 PM
I wonder why he's been suspended.

@Færd You can read it in the meta post. Apparently it came off as defacing own posts, and hence, rage-quitting.

Ah.

5:58 PM
Not wishing to get involved in the technical debate, I just feel that the whole problem could have been detoured by notifying the user and inquiring about their behavior, and letting them know if they had misbehaved or made a mistake.
Or maybe the whole process (flagging, reposting, and suspension) was carried out automatically?
Anyway, I think mislabeling a knowledgeable, devoted user and discouraging them from further contribution to the site has worse consequences than deleting those posts.

@Færd No, it was manual.
@Færd Usually, the person that's rage-quitting will not cooperate. The normal procedure is to suspend to prevent possible further harm.
However, I do agree that probably a mod message would've been better.

6:27 PM
@M.A.R. It's not possible to suspend without a mod message. And as you say, the normal procedure is to suspend to prevent possible further harm and to come to an understanding of what's actually going on.
Typically, it's not done in public, and I'm not going to discuss any individual case in public.
Stops there

@AndrewLeach Hmph but it's possible to send a mod message without suspension.
Well, first time I saw Arau do that, i.e. deface then delete then repost something else, I thought how odd it looks like.

I'm not going to discuss any individual case in public.

Sure, that's moddy.

6:51 PM
It's what we are enjoined to do (or not to do).

One of the reasons I should be celebrating not becoming a mod.

7:08 PM
@AndrewLeach If it's just so an investigatory period is allowed and possible harm is prevented then what's with the judgmental notice "suspended to cool down"?
My first impression was that the user had flown off the handle somewhere (which may be the case; I don't wish to know).
Mind, I'm not blaming ELU mods for the judgmental notice. I'm not really asking a question.

@Færd What could it have been? ''suspended to go fishing''?

There is no call for giving a specific reason there.

Yes there is.
161
Q: Avoid the Streisand Effect - be clear about the reason when suspending an account

Shog9This sort of thing has happened a few times now... "Hey, did you see? User X was boxed!" "User X? Why?" "I donno... Maybe he... " (wild speculation ensues. waffles are blamed.) It's generally quite easy to notice when a user gets thrown in The Penalty Box. You see the tell-tale 1 when...

@Færd mods have no control over what that says.

@MattE.Эллен I know.
@M.A.R. You can't be clear before the investigation is done.

7:13 PM
@Færd Well, would you have preferred if it said ''for voting irregularities''? That's worse.

This account is under investigation and is suspended for a week.
Anyway, now that that's how the system labels suspended accounts, I would be more careful about suspending people if I were a mod.

@Færd But it can't say that. You can write up a meta post so it says that, but there was no way for the mod to make it say that.

Alright. Add that and all the other necessary things to it.

@Færd Do it on meta.SE though. It's site-wide.
I can't predict a good or bad response and the amount of support, but I'll support it.
Usually when you're well-intentioned, the wording plays a great role on how well your question will be received.

8:09 PM
@tchrist I will demand you resign from moderatorship. I can't really understand why you did it. I also want to know how other ELU users think about your behavior.
I believe there are things that moderators can do and things that they should not even think about doing.
This issue could have been resolved far more easily, but I don't know. I really don't know.
We didn't elect you to undelete posts. That's for sure.

@Rathony I can't speak towards tchrist's reasons for doing something. But we did, in fact, elect him to undelete posts if the case warrants it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Let's see.

By demanding his resignation you are accusing him of acting in bad faith.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, let's see.

@Rathony And you are implying that he'd prefer to vandalize the site by filling it with garbage posts, duplicates, wrong answers, etc, in order to attack a user.
It seems to me that if tchrist were to vandalize the site it'd be by deleting stuff, rather than undeleting things. Given how long he's worked hard editing this site, finding problems and proposing solutions on meta, etc, I think it behooves you to give him the benefit of the doubt.

8:21 PM
Of course I agree with Mr Shiny.
Errr what have I just said?

Yeah, me too.
Long time no see @Cerberus!
Thought I'd just say hi.

@Cerberus yipe! what is the world coming to?

@Færd Hi!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 This must be Christ's second coming, or something.
2

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Thanks to his efforts, there are 11 questions that have two answers posed by Aruacaria and one question that has three answers posted by Aruacaria. Well? What do you think?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I tried to solve this issue peacefully by suggesting to open a private chat room and he didn't respond.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Benefit of the doubt? Come on. He crossed the line that should not have been crossed by any moderator.

@Rathony I'm not saying the current situation is optimal. But I think it's a leap to conclude that because tchrist did something and hasn't responded to you, that he must be out to simultaneously vandalize the site AND attack a user.
@Rathony no, you're begging the question here. He's only crossed a line if he's done something in bad faith, which has yet to be proven.

8:37 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I don't think you know the full story.

@Rathony Yes, I read this.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So do you think it is OK to undelete all the questions one OP deleted for the last three years?
Is that what the moderator is supposed to do?
What the hell is going on ELU?

@Rathony Do you think tchrist has suddenly flipped out, gone berserk, and is pissing all over the site? Or, perhaps, an honest mistake was made?

Where is it said that it was he who did it?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I told him to stop yesterday. He should have stopped. I told him to open a private chat room. He didn't. Well, honest mistake? I don't think so.

8:39 PM
Nov 1, 2016: the day tchist went postal by undeleting one user's posts.
@Rathony have you heard from him at all?
I mean, the meta post went up only 6 hours ago.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Nope. Not that I know of except that he said noted. He continued to undelete Araucaria's posts after that.
When a user gives a warning, he should take it. You know what happened yesterday in the front page? All the updates were edits by tchrist for Araucaria's deleted posts.

@Rathony And what do you think tchrist would stand to gain by doing that?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I don't know. Nothing. I seriously doubt if he knows what he is doing.
Shall we stop here?

@Rathony That's a pretty strong accusation. I suggest you take a minute, review tchrist's history, and reconsider.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I was the one who recommended him to be ELU's moderator.

8:43 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 And I know who Christ's second incarnation is...

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 cheese and rice.That bastard

It starts with Tchris.

@Rathony Well, if so, why are you suddenly so sure he's completely lost it? I mean, come on.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Read all the answers that I post tomorrow.

I can hardly wait, except I'll probably be swamped at work tomorrow, so can I get the summary now?

8:45 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Come on, what? I told him to stop yesterday. Why couldn't he stop for christ's sake?

For tchrist's sake.

@Rathony Are you his boss?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Why the hell do you keep undeleting the posts that were deleted by the OP?

I mean, you're still assuming he didn't have his reasons, or that if he had reasons, they were batshit crazy

There are 11 questions that have two answers and 1 question that has three!!

8:46 PM
@Rathony If you read any of the comments on Araucaria's meta post, you'll learn that undeleting answers is a normal thing on SE, especially in situations where it appears that vandalism has occurred.

@Cerberus everything starts with that guy. Finger in every pie, that one.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Sorry. I don't know what you are talking about. So, I will leave. I have to run tomorrow.

Isn't this a little extreme?

@Rathony You are very flustered that tchrist undeleted answers. But things get undeleted all the time.

Well, tchrist and Araucaria had had sort of a gray history I guess. But I wouldn't jump to conclusions, especially about people's intentions.

8:48 PM
to then go and demand tchrist's resignation... yeesh.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 If you want to defend him, defend him on the meta after looking through what he did.

@Mitch Indeed, indeed.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah. Exactly.

@Rathony you're the one coming in here, jumping to conclusions, and then demanding his resignation. I'm just advocating for calming the f down.

Isn't it a thing for t and a to work out?

8:49 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Read the answers he undeleted first and say calming the fuzzy down.

(the f stands for fuzzy bunny)

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I edited my post. Thanks. :-)

Look, I don't care if he undeleted the world's most offensive joke post.

Talk to you later.

Calm the f down? Eff it, I'm resigning as me. Also, the world ends in a week so.. you know... anything goes.

@MetaEd Hi!

Ketchup on hotdogs, people actually using vi on purpose, wearing white after labor day

dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

How old do you think this is?

About 10 aeconds

Close.

8:52 PM
I checked the logs
//rimshot!

Hah.
It had already been buried in clay for more than two millennia by the time Egypt was unified.

in geological time? not very old

From Upper and Lower Egypt.

It's a hoax. Some Neanderthal 20000 years ago wanted to fool his friend grok that he had found a fossil art piece from 40k years before

What is it? A key chain ornament thing? (I don't know what that's called)

8:54 PM
It's not very good, whatever it is

Hah, I don't think we have any such ornamental objects from the Neanderthals?

You know what they say about 'lower' Egypt, haha.

Just a figurine.

probably a sex toy

8:55 PM
Isn't it a thousand times handsomer than a Mondriaan?

Hmm. An earlier example of pornography.

Prehistoric modern art.

@Cerberus no, I wouldn't say it is

Your ways are strange!

How can we guess at its age?
Well, it's wooden, so probably not more than 10^5 years.

8:58 PM
Why do you say "guess"?
Its age has been established.

You mean you can know just
by looking at it?

Probably C14.

@Cerberus You asked us what we thought.

We can't do that

I think early prehistoric art is difficult to date by style?

8:59 PM
By 'we' I mean us

@Færd Yes, but I already told you its age...

I missed it.
