Now playing: Prudes versus Rudes
Cast your votes. Who will win?

The prudes already lost

On second thought, that's exactly what the problem is. Al those people in re-ed camps? People you just don't like.... and you turned them in. "Mom, can I have cake for dinner? What? Did you say 'no'? Consider what that might mean, mom."

The hippies lost.

Wait, theres no cake in NK, so that story didn't work out well.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 We all lose when they fight.

I wan't 10k for the flags, have a feeling they are fun. Problem is effort.

@JohanLarsson As teller of this bank that you are slipping the robbery note to, I can only say your request is incoherent.
Did you want small bills or large?

can you translate it into something simpler?

"money now"?

@Mitch In America, all notes are the same size.

@Jez ouch, I do that too often, can't explain it

Hello people
Can somebody make a quick test for me, please ?

OK. What's 5 + 7?
Is that a good test?

9:12 PM
Hi everyone

The question is about preposition.
I am little concerned because I had a discussion and a participant was not fully convinced with my answer.
It will take 3-4 days to get the Worksheet at/to your mailing address.
Which preposition goes better and why?

Mitch, no :-) a good test would be to write a comment here english.stackexchange.com/questions/180422/… starting with "@Nicolas"
Kabir, I would say "to", because there is movement

ASN Bank is a Dutch bank, part of SNS Reaal. ASN focusses on socially responsible and sustainable investments. ASN Bank was founded on May 1, 1960 by the union of Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging (Federation Dutch Labour Union) (FNV) and the insurance company de Centrale (now Reaal insurances). Until the 1990s it was possible to open an ASN savings account through the Postbank, which were known as 'vakbondsspaarrekeningen' (union savings accounts). @NicolasBarbulesco That's not an actual bank, or at least not any more: it is a government agency that regulates banks.
Much like the ECB.

Haha, yes, it looks horrible.
The Bank of Amsterdam ( or literally Amsterdam Exchange Bank) was an early bank, vouched for by the city of Amsterdam, established in 1609, the precursor to, if not the first modern central bank. Along with the last decade of the Republic of the United Provinces. In 1790, the premium on the Bank's money disappeared, and by the end of the year it had declared itself insolvent. The City of Amsterdam took over the control in 1791. After the creation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1815, the bank was then finally closed in 1819. Bank money In Renaissance Europe, the currency of smal...
De Amsterdamse Wisselbank was the predecessor of de Nederlandsche Bank.

Republic of the United Provinces. Ha ha ! So you have suffered a regression, going back to a hereditary monarchy.
Like the UK after Cromwell, in fact

9:56 PM
Kind of, yes.
We were a republic for longer than we have been a Kingdom.
And for longer than any republic currently in existence, I believe.
Almost 250 years.
What is the oldest republic that still exists?
Of course the Roman republic held out for a much longer time, almost 500 years, according to legend.

This is a list of countries by date of their last transition from a monarchy to a republican form of government. There were two periods in recent history when many such transitions took place: * during or within five years after World War I (1914–1923) – marked in green; * during or within five years after World War II (1940–1950) – marked in pink. Some of the countries on this list were part of larger, now extinct, states (such as the Russian Empire or Yugoslavia) when the transition to a republic took place. Countries where non-republican forms of government (such as a monarch...

Hmm but I'm talked about the total unbroken period during which they were a republic...
I guess San Marino might win. But it hardly counts, it is so tiny! And not really sovereign!
And why are Venice, Genoa, Rome, Athens, etc. etc. not in the list?
I would say Switzerland probably wins.
Why didn't I think of Switzerland?

@NicolasBarbulesco t'es francais?

A: Is there any difference between a 'Web slide Show' and a 'Carousel'?

keshlam"Carousel" is a trademarked name for a particular variety of circular slide tray used in slide projectors made by the Eastman Kodak company. I wouldn't use that name for an online device unless you had approval from, and preferably advertising income from, Kodak.

lolwut

10:07 PM
The oldest republic alive is San Marino

@NicolasBarbulesco then 'notifs' probably = 'comments'

@RegDwigнt I say a cover flow. And I don't ask approval from Apple.

Congrats new mods!

10:11 PM
@NicolasBarbulesco that's also pretty much the smallest country in the world isn't it?

@NicolasBarbulesco It's something with knights in it, in a faraway galaxy, but the operational bit here is that it's long long time ago.

I don't think so. There are more than 30000 people in San Marino.

So, under STV, a candidate with no first priority votes will lose if no one crosses the threshold in the first round, even if he has been voted at 2nd/3rd place by every voter.

Ain't that like 20% more than in Malta?

@NicolasBarbulesco except not at all in English. 'notifs' is unrecognizable.

10:13 PM
If I interpret the method correctly.

Nauru has fewer people. And the Vatican has much less population. The Vatican is the smallest.

Or for a more stronger assertion, he will lose if he gets the lowest number of first priority votes if no is elected in the first round, even if he gets 2nd/3rd votes by every voter.

!!wiki arrow's paradox

In social choice theory, Arrow’s impossibility theorem, the General Possibility Theorem, or Arrow’s paradox, states that, when voters have three or more distinct alternatives (options), no rank order voting system can convert the ranked preferences of individuals into a community-wide (complete and transitive) ranking while also meeting a specific set of criteria. These criteria are called unrestricted domain, non-dictatorship, Pareto efficiency, and independence of irrelevant alternatives. The theorem is often cited in discussions of election theory as it is further interpreted by the Gib...

Jez
@RegDwigнt how is that "been doing it" phrase grammatical?

10:18 PM
That is not a question that can be answered.
Grammatical cannot be how. It either is or it is not.

Actually (says the nerd) the theorem states that there is a strategy, and only one, which meets all those criteria and that is the dictator strategy (one voter gets to choose the winner).

I like this system — if I am the voter

> One of the biggest stars in the world. Who's a friend of mine. Who takes sleeping pills every night to sleep because he finds the adrenaline, there's just too much going on. Been doing it for years. That is a form of addiction.

Jez
@RegDwigнt well why is it not ungrammatical?

Because thousands of native speakers all over the world produce it every day, and quite a few are probably producing it as we speak.
It's a simple ellipsis.
Nothing to see here.

10:22 PM
@RegDwigнt I’ll be damned if I can find anything to gripe about with it.

> I'm a total rookie in television, only been doing it for a couple of years but I've been in radio for over 30 years.

@RegDwigнt My statement stands.

Well, I think the instance I point out points out that it's not a perfect voting method.

Jez
@RegDwigнt yeah, ellipsis... of "having", no?

I would consider the candidate's losing unfair.

Jez
10:23 PM
or equivalent

> This is a guy who every Martin Luther King Day plays, uncut, the " I Have a Dream " speech. Been doing it for years. That's not the act of a -- of a bigot.
@Jez No. Of "and have".
Seriously, who's the native speaker here?

Jez
basically means the same thing

No.

@RegDwigнt Makes ya wonder, don’t it? :)

Jez
anyway, that ellipsis may be acceptable for speech, but i'd call it ungrammatical when written.
it should at least start a sentence

10:24 PM
"I love playing guitar and have been playing it for years" are two things in parallel. "I love playing guitar having been playing it for years" is a cause-effect relationship.

Jez
or be after a semicolon

Nonsense. Spoken and written language do not have different “grammars”.

@tchrist no, and the spoken ellipsis is ungrammatical
but casual language is often ungrammatical

@tchrist Personally, I prefer it open and downvoted.

@KitFox Ok, that’s fine, too.

@tchrist so is it grammatical to elide a subject?

@RegDwigнt You’re right. The native nonspeaker is wrong. 30–love.

@NicolasBarbulesco Only help me find is grammatical.

Jez
@Arrowfar someone jokingly said that it was Cerberus that jokingly said something?

@Robusto, I thought we had the kind of friendship that allowed me to tell you when I disagreed with you. Instead you felt betrayed and humiliated, and so you're upset and angry with me. I understand that. I am hurt that despite our history, you chose to read my words in as an obscene way as possible instead of assuming I was in good faith. We need to have the kind of relationship where we can tell each other these things and where we can forgive imprecise wording.

user116848
@Jez Haha no. It was probably Cerberus who said it.

10:50 PM
@RegDwigнt Same here! They must have waited for us to leave.

- # of hours in excruciating pain: 5

@Mitch What?? I was several km from here!

@Cerberus what's with this Robkit thing? I am missing all context. Since you are to blame, explain yourself pronto.

When will man send a cat into space ?

@RegDwigнt I am not to blame, they fought without me. Kit blamed Rob for Jasper's (again) leaving the site.
Then Rob got mad at her for the accusation.

10:51 PM
@RegDwigнt There are cats !

@Nic Cat response: Meh

@Mitch that is such a myth. I've only ever read about it online. Must be one of those Russians-are-good-drinkers or Italians-are-good-lovers or Frenchers-can-speak-English things.

@Cerberus I would put the again right in front of leaving to avoid it wandering over to blamed.

Space: no big deal

10:52 PM
I own 200k LEGO parts, have been (haHA!) for years, and I am yet to step onto a single one.

@tchrist Right, it's ugly, but clearer.
@RegDwigнt You keep count?

@Cerberus with every bit of context supplied, two more bits of context go missing.
Jasper left the site?

I think he deleted his account again.

Again

You know, his periodic thing.

10:54 PM
And no offense and no hard feelings, but why would anyone care either way?
He'll be back in a month.

@Cerberus you essentially did the opposite of what he asked you

Yeah.

Jinx.

It is true that Rob at some point said he ignored Jasper, but Kit was kind of mean about it, blaming Rob and in public (obviously). She kind of tried to make her statement seem less confrontational later, but I think she wouldn't retract it.

@FutureJasper: next time I will personally make you leave the site so everyone can just shut up and love each other or something.

10:55 PM
@Alraxite What? I did not?

@Cerberus I think we might have different definitions of in front.

@RegDwigнt That’s how we chthonic dwellers read the signs and portents written in the entrails of time. You empyreans should be able to avail yourselves of your own means of divination.

@reg you live in a bizarro world where there are no single Lego pieces waiting for you to step on. I bet all your socks match and you've never lost a pen.

The right definition being mine.

Help, I unlearned English again. Someone flip the switch on that tchrist bot.

10:56 PM
I always used a goat.

@Alraxite The front of a sentence is its beginning, which is the upper left.

@Mitch I lost count of lost pens before I lost pens.
And yet: no LEGO stepping.

And who is socks?
And when is their match?

Yay cats!
And strange animals?

10:57 PM
I've not seen it in the official WC planner.

@Cerberus upper left?

Who did paint this baby pig in red ?

@RegDwigнt He means you mods can probably more easily tell when someone leaves the site.
@Alraxite You know what I mean.

@tchrist I don't understand the plot. The jump cuts aren't helping.
No posting Michael Bay gifs in this chat!

@RegDwigнt Keep watching until it thickens.

10:59 PM
@Cerberus no, you keep watching Michael Bay until it thickens.
