8:00 PM
@Cerberus I thought it was made up the first time my friend used it... And it wasn't until a year or so ago, when I joined the fire brigade, that I actually understood what it meant.

Why isn't it "like a house with fire"?

It would probably make more sense if it was "a house under fire" (since it's actually the gas above any burning item that is alight – solids don't burn, they char); but then you wouldn't be able to tell if it was under fire from a drive-by shooting, or actually on fire.

Right.
I was thinking the house and the fire weren't getting along with each other...

The key is the word "quickly"...
I think a house can burn to the ground in less than 15min.
@JasperLoy Does a Domo count as an animal?

8:20 PM
@brachomonacho Ah! Now I get it. I was thinking is was about the intensity of their getting along, but it was about speed.
@brachomonacho 15 minutes, really? And the house collapses into a pile of rubble?

@Cerberus I guess it probably depends on the type of house... (If it was a steel frame, brick house I guess it would still be standing). But certainly at 15 minutes the house would be unsalvageable.
That video was a simulated electrical fire, by the way.

Wowie!
That one was a bit extreme. And, yes, unsalvageable for a wooden house, that sounds probable.
My house burned down last year, well, lots of damage to the interior on several floors, but the construction of the house was undamaged.
The fire burned for at least half an hour. The walls were brick.
And there was straw in the ceiling for insulation.

Wow... It probably didn't burn completely unchecked for half an hour, though...
That wouldn't have done the building much good.

It did, more or less.
A 19th-century house.

So the fire brigade didn't try to cool it down to keep adjacent buildings from catching alight?

8:34 PM
The fire didn't spread fast enough, I suppose.
But fire was coming from the window in the corridor on the top floor.
Perhaps it was a little bit less than half an hour; I wasn't keeping track.

@Cerberus That's really strange... It'd never be allowed here, because of fire risk. (Solid fuel too close to electrical wiring and lights.)

Oh, it is probably not allowed here either.
Most of Amsterdam hasn't been checked in decades.
But I heard later that straw was commonly used in ceilings here. It is still in a great many older houses.
It's cool that you were with the firemen.
Not any more?

Still training, I'm with the volunteer bush fire brigade.
Haven't attended a fire yet, because I'm always away or too sleepy when the pager goes off.

Haha aww.
I can imagine! That pager must be terribly annoying...

Where I live, most of the callouts are for vehicle accidents. We're always first on scene because it's too small a town to have its own police or ambulance station.
I don't really mind standing by to make sure someone doesn't burn alive in their car...
But it is sort of annoying when the automatic fire alarm at the nursing home goes off at 3am.
Are there ever bushfires in Europe?

8:50 PM
Yeah, I heard that the majority of fire alerts are false?
We have bushfires, yes. Especially in the warmer countries, but also some small ones in Holland most summers.
In Russia, they were extremely bad last year.
People in Moscow were reported to be unable to go to work because of the smoke.

@Cerberus Most automatic fire detections, yes... Luckily for the nursing home, we don't charge for our attendance. I think the regular fire brigade charges $600 to any business that calls them out.
(Fire or not.)

Oh, really! I suppose that makes some sense...
I don't think we have that here (not sure).

@Cerberus Wow... I think here, they'd make you go to work, anyway.
Hmm... I think I had better go outside to decide whether to ride, or drive to Sydney today.
(I hate driving.)

@brachomonacho Ah ok... good luck on your voyage!

9:06 PM
I cant understand how HOW he could simultanuosly play right and left hands.... No body in the world ant play such fast

@Cerberus Thanks! ...Possible late shower this afternoon and evening, plus my CBR is horrendously overdue for a service. Stinky car it is.
Bye!

@trg787 are you real? I thought you are spam

I think I ' m a real :)

So that is not spam?
@BogdanLataianu Is that spam, I am having a hard time telling.

Kureuokhin is a SPAM? You are laughing at me. It was a GENIUS
He died at 1996

9:12 PM
@trg787 it looks like an unsolicited request to download from a site, I am here because I got flags that there was spam.
Can you link his wiki?

This is English Language and Usage chat. Thanks Kortuk

@BogdanLataianu In the electronics chat we have discussed music. It looks like a discussion of on and off topic, but the fact it was removed means someone else thought it was more clear.
@BogdanLataianu Was not me, I was about to, but I always try to be very sure when it is not clear. I asked for a wiki to see if the person was a bot. It seemed very odd.
Have a good day, and forgive my poor English, my first language is C.

Hehe you too

Hi.
That guy is not a bot.
I know him.

@Cerberus I was not sure, I was trying to figure that out, However I am not the person whom took action. It seems that someone else found the case more clear then I did.
He has not been banned from chat or such. He is still in chat and can still talk, he just had one message removed.

9:19 PM
OK.
He is Belarussian, and is somewhat... original.
It is sort of funny that we have bots nowadays that act like odd users.

hi all

9:47 PM
Sergei Kuryokhin called music by Mozart just silly and primitive, also he said the same abt the music by Rastropovitch

I didnt hear about Kuyokhin and Rastropovitch

Jez
Noah's Ark - WATCH. :-)

but speaking about Russians...Prokofiev, Tchaikovski, Shostakovich, Rahmaninov were great

It's enourmously popular musicians.... But Kuruokhin is a Genius His "Lecture on brome"..... umpphhhhhh
I like these composers very much
but speaking about Russians...Prokofiev, Tchaikovski, Shostakovich, Rahmaninov were great
you just.... I like only these composers

@Jez Very well done. Though I doubt anyone in his right mind needed reassurance that the project just wasn't practical.

Jez
10:01 PM
@Cerberus I know. it takes the belief that people who think Noah's Ark was real are totally and utterly beyond reality, from likely to 100% certain

dont be afraid it's just a picture

@Jez That is one of the reasons why I wouldn't even consider a form of Judeo-Christianity that takes the Bible literally after a casual glance.
Whose grave is that?
The cross looks eastern...
If you want to see true fascist propaganda, watch the video the Norwegian shooter made to announce his crime.
I don't want to post the link, but it is probably easy to find on Google.
Pretty disgusting.

I will have a look. He chose not to kill himself to show his message

It's the grave of Sergei Kuroukhin

Jez
> Damn titty shirt failed me.
wtf was that about??

10:15 PM
After his death all friends friends of his dautger turned out from her (abt. 16.y.o) She suiceded. She was graved near to father.
For her it was a shock: NOBODY don't want to communicate with her...

Jez
FYI 'suicide' and 'grave' arent verbs

it's not imortant at the time

Good evening all!

Jez
hi @aedia

@aedia, good evening. How are you?

10:25 PM
Anybody thinking about things other than people dying? The transcript is... what's the opposite of uplifting?
@trg @jez Hullo, I'm well. Procrastinating on doing my laundry.

Jez
French lang and usg is up to 140
:-)

@Cerberus I saw you mentioned your house burned last year! Everyone was ok?
140 whats? Out of 200 for commit?

Jez
yep

Yay!

@aedia Hey! Yeah everyone was unharmed, thank God. Just tons damage.

10:35 PM
Guys, let's make this chat room a kind of English Club..In 19 century in Russia was such called "English Clubs"
Frankly I don't why they called it English

user19161
@aedia Q: What is the opposite of uplifting? A: The opposite of uplifting is depressing.

user19161
@Jez Very good. By Oct, it should be in public beta.

Jez
hopefully
maybe for my birthday, Oct 7th ;-)

@Cerberus I am so glad no one was hurt! I hope you did not lose too much important stuff.

user19161
@Jez You must remind us when that day comes then!

user19161
10:43 PM
@aedia That is another yay! Cute!

Hi @Jasper! Haha, I suppose I need to expand my chat vocabulary.

Jez
maybe "awesome"
that's a buzzword here
Hey Jeff, I want this site to be aaaaaaaaaawesome

user19161
@aedia Also, it is best to put the clothes into the washing machine first before procrastinating. That way the clothes get washed and you can procrastinate all you want.

Heh, good point. I have actually gotten as far as getting one load to the dryer.

@aedia Nah I am not much of a stuff person, and insurance covered most of it. Thanks for your concern! How is the heat?

user19161
10:49 PM
@trg787 It seems that your English is improving. What was the removed message?

user19161
Reg and Matt are not here tonight. Maybe spending time with wife or booze.

I am not much for stuff but I can imagine it would be a great pain to lose something like work in progress... The heat is still pretty bad, but at least I have air conditioning!
Took the car to go get groceries when normally I might walk, because I was seriously worried that my fresh stuff might not do well on a walk back in the sun.

I'd do the same thing. Heat is just awful.
Heat bad, heat die.

11:05 PM
The radio says now "an excessive heat warning remains in effect through 8 p.m." :'(

Amy Winehouse is dead! ZOMG!

user19161
Wikipedia says cause of death as yet unexplained.

Jez
11:32 PM
wow
she did like to take a looooot of drugs and usually came onto stage heavily intoxicated
so that may have something to do with it
