In Soviet Russia, they'll let you hunt the homos.

@RegDwigнt In post-Soviet Russia, they'll still let you.

Actually I take that back. Lenin and his myrmidons made it specifically clear that homos are A-okay.
It took a Putin to put on the ritz.

@RegDwigнt Nice.

Crack, chink, slot. As Rob will confirm.
BBL checking the evening news.

A lot of stuff can go in and out of that door ;-)

7:07 PM
@RegDwigнt Don't you be making cracks about the Chinese.

Anybody figure out the unicorn one yet?

@KitFox There's a unicorn hat?

Q: I (Don't) See Your Point: How do I earn this unicorn hat?

Michael Hampton I earned this hat, I See Your Point, on Stack Overflow, but at the time it popped up (a few hours ago), I hadn't actually been doing anything on SO for some time prior to that. Nor did I get any reputation, upvotes, badges, or other obvious activity that would easily explain it. This also seem...

Was just going to post that.
@MichaelHampton - only pattern I saw is that all the user with the hat seem to have an accepted answer on meta on a date/time falling in the bash period. — SPArchaeologist 4 hours ago

@KitFox You look like a red eye pirate :D

7:13 PM
@MετάEd Yeah. I thought maybe.
Shall we try it?

Q: Has anyone on EL&U been awarded the 'I See Your Point' hat yet?

KitFoxThe unicorn hat is still stumping those of us who discuss these things in chat. Has anyone had it awarded yet? And is anyone ready to break the oath of silence that comes with it?

@RegDwigнt eh?

Hats, man, hats! This iz srs bizness!
We're competing against other sites for Pete's sake!

sigh; what do you need me to do?

Re-enable your hats.
plz

Q: Is "current is cut today" grammatical?

user59970Is it correct to say "Current is cut today"? If saying "It is written, it is broken and it is spoken" is correct, what's wrong with this?

wow
@KitFox yeah! do it for Pete!

@KitFox But it looks like crap...

@MrHen You don't have to wear any hat, just earn it.
Them.
Lots!

@KitFox Okay... tut please?

tut?

tut[orial]

7:23 PM
Who let the hen in?
!!youtube who let the dogs out

Well, first undo your hat hating.
Oh, you did.
Now, keep chatting.

@KitFox I already did that. I was just clicking to see what happened.
@KitFox Okay... about what? Hats?

Sure.

I don't have much conversational interest in hats...

7:26 PM
How are you feeling today?

Eh, I figured someone around here would appreciate the "kekeke" question.

Kit!

Although I had a hard time asking it in a way that people would actually understand without immediately closing it as opinion based.

@MrHen I think Reg liked it. That's what made him nag you about hats.
There, you've got two more.
Martha!

@Marthaª Hey Martha! Good to see you again. :)

7:27 PM
Hullo!

$Martha^a$

She's the only reason I'm willing to forgive all this Evil White Stuff.

Oh cute. She's getting so big!

7:30 PM
@KitFox You mean I have two?

Also, how do you get a pirate hat? I want a pirate hat.

I want a hat that doesn't look like crap atop my gravatar

@MrHen I mean you have two more.

My gravatar already has a perfect hat.
2

@KitFox They haven't showed up yet?

7:31 PM
I guess not yet.

@MrHen The boater should look good, especially if you position it just right. (You can position the hats this year - just click and drag until it looks perfect.)

@Marthaª clicks and drags off screen
;)
In any case, what is a boater? I don't really have idea how this hat thing works

Upvote 40 questions today and you'll earn at least two more hats.

@MrHen The Frosty the Snowman hat should look good on you, too, and it's easier to earn: just vote up at least five items, and don't vote anything down.

Alright, there, now I just look like a cat.

7:38 PM
@MετάEd Where are all your hats!?

@KitFox As far as I know I have one hat, which I'm wearing.
It's an old hat, but it's still a hat.

@JSBձոգչ That's how I do it.

@MετάEd But! Hats!

@KitFox hats are for people with heads. Stupid hats.

A: A majority of those whose family or families

RegDwigнtNow that you've provided the complete context, I think it is safe to say two things. Whichever variant works best for the last sentence in isolation — and it is easy to imagine that all three do, depending on dialect and register —, since the construction is repeated in the other two sentences,...

My shot at the Archaeologist hat.

7:42 PM
@KitFox You could twist my arm.

@Marthaª I tried do this just now and ended up downvoting more things than I upvoted.
Grr...

Hey ho! That's Mr Hen!
Hello Mr Hen
And thank you for enabling the hats.
And verifying that my suspicion, our suspicion, was right.

It would be nice if we could scale the hats.
My hat is a dress.

Your hat is wearing a hat.
But you still ain't got no horn.

@RegDwigнt What was our suspicion?

7:49 PM
@KitFox that you don't need to turn to MSO for the Guru. Our cozy little meta is just fine.
So with MrHen all good and happy, we still have at least three Guru hat candidates (including myself, ahem).

did we figure out the unicorn hat yet?

That's what MetaEd and Kit are up to.

But you still ain't got no horn.

A: Excessive downvoting

J.R.Sasha: Welcome to EL&U (and I mean that sincerely). When I was in school, there was a common refrain: there's no such thing as a stupid question. The sentiment was, if you are confused about something, you shouldn't be afraid to ask. I still believe that's true – there's no such thing as a stup...

Only five to go.
34
A: Is it OK to answer to old questions?

z7sg ѪThere is nothing wrong with that, quite the opposite. In fact you can even win a nice shiny badge by reviving and answering an old question!

Only six.
31
A: Exception to 30 character minimum for answers

RegDwigнtSimply link the word to its dictionary definition. Observe: Ghoti. — 6 characters. Ghoti. — 56 characters. This pushes your answer over the 30-character limit and makes it considerably more helpful, as the OP might not know that word. In fact, that might be the very reason why he's ...

Only nine.

@RegDwigнt Hey ho.

Let's pay it back to Jeff Atwood with his own hats. United we stand! E, L, U! E, L, U!

Hmm... where did that hat come from?!

7:55 PM
@MrHen Have you noticed the awful error in this answer? The list is alphabetical order except for Russian, which should come right before Spanish. The powers that be will give you two hats for fixing that.
@MrHen it came from some of us having been, um, mildly disappointed with Jeff on one occasion in the past.

I went through and fixed some typos and formatting in my own answers and flagged some comments and won like 5 hats just for that

@RegDwigнt I was talking about the Johnny Three Hats hat

@RegDwigнt Dang. I already have upvotes on all three of those answers.

@RegDwigнt I'm not editing an old community answer on a closed question...

@MrHen ah.

7:57 PM
The things you people do for participation rewards. Good grief.

@Marthaª yeah, story of everybody's life here in the last two days...
@MrHen why not? It's an obvious mistake.
The question is only closed because it accepts no further answers. It's still useful and canonical, which is why we expressly keep it around.
But we keep closing stuff as a duplicate of it. It's a good resource.
@MrHen tis but for a few days. Tis the season.

Well I can't speak for what others do. I am only noticing a glaring mistake that needs fixed.
But you are free to find another CW post to edit.
And another 90-day old post.
And of course you are welcome to just ignore me and work the Unanswered queue, or what it was you were up to as of late.

so did you figure out the marauder?

Yes we did.

8:05 PM
@RegDwigнt Eh, I took a break. All the questions were blending together again. I miss the interesting questions. :P

You don't have one yet?

@RegDwigнt Is there just a list somewhere?

@MrHen ah I see. I actually wondered why you stopped.
@Hugo if you still don't have one, ping @Ste about it.
@MrHen list of all hats?
And list of all hats or just the non-secret ones without the spoilers?

@RegDwigнt Well, I'm curious how I got this one particular hat.

Which one? The three-hat one?
As the name says, it's for getting three other hats.
There's another one like that for getting any twenty hats.
The secret hats are not really explained anywhere. They are being oh-so-secretive about them this year around.

8:07 PM
Any 3 or 20 on the same site

Right.
I sort of assumed that went without saying.

@RegDwigнt The unending review queue mixed with me remembering why I left the first time.
@RegDwigнt It just says it's a secret hat.

@MrHen yeah queues are Sisyphian. Though of course you could have just switched to the "Close all things" queue. :)

@MrHen Yeah, I find it kind of annoying that even after you earn a secret hat, it doesn't tell you what it's for.

@MrHen yeah I meant the name. The description says nothing.

8:10 PM
@RegDwigнt I guess I don't mind the queues so much as dealing with people who want to fight about every single close vote.

Hm. Y u no ignore them?
You're not a mod, you don't have to listen to everyone who pings you.
Cast your vote and move on. You owe them nothing.

@RegDwigнt I did; it's just another small thing added to the pile.

I see.

EL&U is fine as a concept but... it's changed.

All things change, Neo.

8:11 PM
It isn't the same site I participated in way back when.
And that's fine.
@RegDwigнt Did I ever tell you that Skeptics asked me to become a mod at one point?

The $16k question being, can it go full circle one day.

I thought that was interesting. :)

@MrHen no you did not! Why would that be?

@RegDwigнt I was pretty active on their meta for a while and they sent out feelers for more mods after it hit a growth spurt.

Oh it hit a growth spurt?
More news with every post.

8:13 PM
@RegDwigнt Er, "growth spurt in things that needed moderating."
I suppose that's an important distinction.
This was way back when I went on my first tirade about images.

So let me guess. You told them you were (•_•). ( •_•)>⌐□-□. (⌐□_□) skeptical about their offer?

@RegDwigнt Teehee. :)

@RegDwigнt Right. No hat.

@MrHen oh oh oh I smell a link!

@KitFox

8:15 PM
You mean how they posted images of the Moon and said it proved things?
Please do say that you do.

@RegDwigнt It eventually made its way onto Meta:
9
Q: What is the criteria for an acceptable image?

MrHenThis has nothing to do with sex. In the recent past I have had two oddball encounters with posters using images in a manner that seemed... less than constructive. Both of these happen to have been links to webcomics; both of them occurred on sister sites. (One on Skeptics, one on English.) Neit...

I always found that funny. Q: "How do I know there was a moon landing" A: "Here are some pictures absolutely anyone could have shopped".

But most of the arguing happened in chat.

@MrHen oh that.
Well that's a different one but nonetheless important.

@RegDwigнt No, the images were less relevant than that. There were a few users that were rep-whoring using images like... Indiana Jones.

8:17 PM
The Evan liked that style.

I can't be bothered to look up the chat history.

But anyway, it's not happening, and actually in hindsight it never did on a big enough scale. Thankfully. Just a couple answers here and there, in the grand scheme of things. knocks on wood

In any case, I lost that fight on Skeptics but during the battle I apparently made a good impression on some of the mods.

K, now it all comes together.

@RegDwigнt What's not happening? Images?

8:18 PM
@MrHen well not on ELU anyway.
Can't speak for Skeptics.
In fact I can speak for Skeptics that it always did and always will probably.

@RegDwigнt Yeah, ELU was more resistant to them.
The other feather in my cap was my scathing review of them at 90 days:
8
A: 90 days are up - How are we doing?

MrHenThis details my first and second impressions as both a lurker and asker. These are obviously opinions, and they are pretty harsh, so be warned. (Also, I didn't really proofread this because I had to bug out immediately after finishing. If you see a typo, go ahead and fix it.) First impressions ...

@MrHen it sort of gets annoying after a while, the key being it gets annoying for everyone, and the while is very short.

@RegDwigнt Yeah. ELU has an edge up that we have (or had) real content to discuss. Skeptics doesn't really have much to say other than, "Hurr durr logic."
Which isn't really that interesting

> Step 1: Browse Snopes. Step 2: Ask question. Step 3: Quote Snopes.
+1 for that alone.
> Questions are crap; answers are awesome.

I also asked this:
7
Q: Who are our experts?

MrHenI have been noticing more and more of a split between what the target audience of Skeptics.SE is. I am under the impression that Stack Exchange sites are built around the idea of attracting experts on a given subject. In the case of Skeptics.SE, who are those experts? What do they look like? What...

8:21 PM
That is another great point.
I felt like that on ELU at times.
Not sure I still feel that way every day, now that more and more people retire.

@RegDwigнt Yeah, that was one reason I took another short break, here. There have always been rep-farm questions on ELU but in my recent bout of activity I didn't see any questions that really made me go, "Hmm..."

In fact I myself have argued the point in this very room, on a couple different occasions, how complete crap questions can be turned into something awesome by means of an excellent answer.

@RegDwigнt Namely, that some "stupid" questions really aren't that stupid.

The only problem with that is, of course, that people ultimately get tired of turning crap into gold.

Language is messy and that can make for great answers.
@RegDwigнt Yes.

8:24 PM
@MrHen that, too, but I mean it in a broader sense, actually. Some questions are stupid, but the answers don't stop there, but sort of ask follow-up questions themselves, and then go on to answer these, too.

@RegDwigнt Ah, yes.

In fact at some point I had to stop FumbleFingers I think, and someone else, who were exceptionally well at seeing an excellent question where there was none.

I still think my favorite question on the site is this one:
29
Q: Is there a word to describe a highly desirable cursed treasure?

oosterwalIs there a single word to describe an object or idea that is so desirable that everyone wants to attain it but once they have it they are immediately cursed? The idea is often used in literature—some examples: In Lord of the Rings, the 'one ring' is a perfect example of this. In Guy de Maupass...

So I flat out told them, "different question is different, yours is of course excellent so why credit this OP here with it, go ahead and post it yourself".

Mostly because the answers were fantastic.
@RegDwigнt Yeah.
That's part of why I got so annoyed by "answers in comments" earlier
Get this crap off of our radar by letting us drop it from the queue or improve it to the point where it makes an interesting answer.

8:27 PM
@MrHen I actually favorited that one back then.
Who was it again that did that interesting analysis not of the top questions or the most viewed ones, but the ones the top X users favorited?
He found a striking amount of signal and almost no noise.

@RegDwigнt Not sure.

K, so it wasn't you.
That was my way of asking.
Hm.

In any case, I remember way back when I posted this:
5
A: Who is EL&U's audience?

MrHenTo throw my own opinion into the mix, this is what I think we should be aiming for: We want to attract people who know English very well but may not realize it yet. There is an odd sense of accomplishment in reading a difficult question, knowing the answer and then immediately reading why that ...

> We need to offer puzzles and challenges and questions that stick in your head until someone finds an answer.

So anyway, just to wrap it up: you declined the offer saying your posts were meant to be letters of resignation rather than of application?

@RegDwigнt Actually, I was just about to move across the country and take a new job so I turned it down with time as the excuse
But I tend to be a pretty heavy handed mod so I'm not sure I would have fit in well.

8:35 PM
60% of the time that observation is wrong 100% of the time.

As a child I believed that quicksand was going to be a much bigger problem in my life than it has turned out to be.

@RegDwigнt Which observation?

Being critical about oneself is a virtue yada yada.
@MrHen when people say "I'd not be a good mod cuz I'm too unfair and unbalanced" or whatevah.

@RegDwigнt Oh, I see. To clarify, I know that I'd piss off users. I also know that I'd be a good mod. The problem is that I don't really care if I piss off users... so I'm not sure I would have been a good fit with the Skeptics mods.

And there we go, I've got the Archaeologist. And now I feel dirty because it should be Mr Hen, who worked the hell out of Unanswered questions when there wasn't even hats.

8:38 PM
@RegDwigнt Haha, I don't care about hats. :)

@MrHen I'm not talking about your caring, I'm talking like karmic cosmic justice or something.

oh yeaah, says Jonny 3 hats

I did notice that the Unanswered questions list is up to 267. :P

@MrHen yeah right, we're still talking about Skeptics, I keep forgetting. That's a special case.

I had it down to something like 60 at one point.

8:39 PM
@MrHen that's 26.7 minutes of work to you.

I wonder if they changed the filter or something...
@MattЭллен :)

That they do every so often.
But I don't know for sure.

@RegDwigнt Right. I figured the ELU mods wouldn't have minded my style so much. At that point in time I think you were all feeling completely swamped.

Oh, and I got the Milliner, too! Forgot that I was at 19 already.

back in a bit

8:41 PM
@MrHen we were so swamped I shapeshifted from hippo to crocodile. That's how much we were swamped.
Alas, that alone didn't help. Somehow.

back.
@RegDwigнt Heh.

Speaking of back: yeah baby I'm back!

154 behind Code Review.
226 behind Linux and Unix.

Good lord there are a lot of people here today.
Hat greed.

8:46 PM
Yeah no, more like my personal greed. I mod-summoned half of those poor folks and force-fed them hats.

You haven't force-fed me any hats. I guess you like my hat.
Although actually it's more of a steed.

Speaking of force-feeding: @Johan right there is not even registered with ELU. He could win that Game Boy hat!
Or whatever it is.

And a unique one. Nobody has ever seen a Christmas dalek riding a pussy before.

@MετάEd very much so.
@MετάEd very mucher so still.

Thank you, SE staff.

8:50 PM
But I can always feed you hats. No probs at all.

Also, thank you NSA.

I helped Rob from 7 to 13 and Kit from 5 to 15 in like twenty minutes.
It is not much work or anything.

@RegDwigнt If you'd like help in your quest to make ELU.SE great, let me know what to do.
I made no effort for the two I have.

@RegDwigнt I never entered the hat game

@MετάEd thank you. This answer here says "helps you to understand". I'd fix that to read "helps you understand", but I'd get zero hats for that. If you do that in my stead, you'll get three hats. Yes, three.
@JohanLarsson ah I see. Not even on SO? I didn't check.

8:55 PM
nope, not this year and not last, dunno why

Well. Even Cerberus has opted in, and he hates hats.
But anyway, actually I was wondering why you had no account. Hats are secondary.
I didn't know we only had you in chat.

I don't know the language, don't think I can ~help~ much on the main site

Well you could ask questions.

Besides you'll know very well that "help" is way more than just asking and answering.
Thanks Ed.
By the way, pretty much everyone should be able to get a couple hats for doing nothing at all (there's a hat for getting upvotes but no downvotes, which is not exactly hard to pull off), or doing very little (upvote just a couple posts, do not downvote anything for just one day).

9:00 PM
@RegDwigнt Good lord. You are the hatmaster.

Master of my domain.
Meanwhile I'll try and get you two or three more hats without any participation on your side.
Though again, you can get another one practically for free by casting a single upvote and no downvotes in a day. (Or any number of upvotes, just no downvotes.)
In other news, @stoneyb has seven hats but only one of them on ELU! A scandal of epic proportions!

@RegDwigнt Says you. How am I supposed to resist downvoting horrible things?

@MrHen oh but I can tell you how!

@MrHen Use up all your votes before you see them

I cast 40 upvotes this morning. On old stuff that I had somehow missed. So I'm out of votes. And I'll be getting two hats out of this. One for casting 40 votes, and one for not casting downvotes.

9:13 PM
@Hugo Oh... maybe that's my problem. I keep forgetting to upvote things because I hate everything.
;)

@MrHen then just pick a day to cast a single upvote and other than that not to be on the site at all.
It's not like you'll have trouble with that. :P

Or look for those eligible for silver or gold, they're not all terrible

Q: Are all words in a sentence equally important?

SquirrlFor instance take the following sentence, "Jack decided that it was time for him and his friends to go to the playground." In my opinion the words "Jack" and "playground", are more significant than "it" and "for." Is there a general principle that explains that sort of subjectivity?

The question content itself says, "In my opinion..."
and then tries to answer the question.

> The Navajo fourth person is also used when speaking about something in the hypothetical sense. It has an impersonal, indirect, and nonspecific connotation, and thus is politely used when talking about someone in the presence of the speaker. The impersonality and indirectness of this fourth person permits the speaker to avoid any appearance or implication that he is trying to speak for or control the actions of another person.
And I need one more vote for my mulieribus joke:
Rather unconscionably, you seemed to have missed one -erast word. ’Tis for neither the faint-hearted nor easily offended, so avert your eyes now if you be either. The word you missed is mulierast, being of course a lover of . . . women! Yes, these people really do exist and should not be side-lined. As with so many paraphilias, this one has engendered a wealth of derived terms, including mulierastic, mulierastically, mulierose, mulierosity, not to mention the related muliebral, muliebrious, muliebriousness, muliebrity. Mulierasts in disguise often try to sneak aboard the MulieriBus. — tchrist 6 hours ago

@tchrist For a hat?
In any case, I upvoted the comment.

Well, the antecedent one needs two votes.
Or did when last I looked.

Why are we upvoting comments?

There’s a hat in it.

@tchrist Ok.

Takes 5 non-meta comments scoring 2+.
The thing is, those aren’t rolled back on favoritism, so most people blue their comment quotas today.

Blue is the colour of the clear sky and the deep sea. On the optical spectrum, blue is located between violet and green. 11:49 PM
@RegDwigнt It seems people can make you do anything with games.

Several languages, including Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Lakota Sioux, use the same word to describe blue and green. For example, in Vietnamese the colour of both tree leaves and the sky is xanh. In Japanese, the word for blue (青 ao) is often used for colours that English speakers would refer to as green, such as the colour of a traffic signal meaning "go".

@RegDwigнt I have a really cool game. You win secret, unique snowflakes by transferring money to a bank account, the more, the better. Exciting!!!

if you use the same word they are the same color
Many languages do not differentiate between certain colors on the visible spectrum and do not have separate terms for blue and green. They instead use a cover term for both (when the issue is discussed in linguistics, this cover term is sometimes called grue in English). For example, in Vietnamese both tree leaves and the sky are xanh (to distinguish, one may use xanh lá cây "leaf grue" for green and xanh dương "ocean grue" for blue).
