@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Gee, thanks. I'll have a look.
@aufkag we've got answers for everything.
@Simon_eQ Tant pis!

did you mean "quiet"?

Ninja is good, but silent would be a better word in that case... or not.

I'm looking for a funny way to say it.

10+ years since I saw one.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Waaaah don't say the word!
@Simon_eQ Lucky you.
@Cerberus Isn't that how you deal with alien computers? I saw a documentary about it once.
@Simon_eQ mouse/nun/shadow/lamb/turtle/kitten/quiet thunderstorm
18:26
@Simon_eQ do you want it to be something that isn't normally quiet?

@Cerberus I'm curious. Which word are you talking about? I just went through all the expletives, and can't find anything harmful
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I guess a Macbook is an alien computer, yes.
I'm going to guess macbook.
Yeah, that.

I did say "funny" after-all.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 yeah I saw that. amazing. I still don't think it will be cost-effective.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Yay! How's your phone doing?
I struggle to imagine how people are going to deal with OS driver updates, for one thing.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Right, I read about that on a Dutch site. It's a Dutchman, right?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That works for PCs...I rather think the hardware itself is the bottleneck, using space efficiently and stuff.
We've talked about this, haven't we?
You of course didn't think the new idea could work.
And I was like "let's see whappens".
all new ideas will fail!
18:54
Shut up, green Mr Shiny.
just look at... um... the 3D0
I'm stuggling to remember new ideas that didn't make it
probably because they don't get talked about so much
esperanto?
@Cerberus It isn't a new idea. It's an old idea that is being applied in a new place. However the economics don't seem to make sense to me. Not to mention the usability problems. "you of course didn't think the new idea could work". I could just turn that around to you and say "you refuse to learn any lessons from the past"
Three stars for the scraper, there goes my weekend
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hey, I just remained open to the idea. What didn't work in 2008 might work now. The market and the technology have changed a lot. I didn't say I thought it would work, I just don't know. It's worth a try.
@JohanLarsson Yes, we're still waiting...
What do we pay you for, hmm??
@Cerberus The technology has changed by becoming less modular for end-users. This has brought huge savings in terms of design constraints, os simplification, etc.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That works for PCs...I rather think the hardware itself is the bottleneck, using space efficiently and stuff.
Let's just take one simple example. You have a phone made in 2012. It runs Linux 3.4. Now you want to install a new bluetooth module. Surprise! That one requires Linux 3.10.
Nobody said desktops could be the same size as ultrabooks. But there is a compromise.
It turns out that nobody has ever made Linux 3.10 work with this particular combination of hardware.
@Cerberus It's worse than you imagine.
shrugs
phones don't use the same architecture as desktops
19:05
I don't know. We'll see.
You can't install arbitrary OSes on them.
It's nearly impossible to install drivers. Where would you even get it? How would you load it?
But you can install Android on 200 devices...
And they each have a custom kernel.
Tailor-made to that specific phone
And all parts that are now used in phones presumably have Android drivers.
Yes but the drivers aren't swappable willy-nilly to any old kernel
19:06
Small manufacturers poop out new phones by the dozens every year.
Some of them will have closed-source drivers that will never be updated, so you will never be able to upgrade the kernel on that phone. ever.
waves hand I'm sure a solution can be found.
Oh, but you NEED to update the kernel in order to get new drivers, because that's how Linux works.
Just look at how difficult it is to get, eg, Cyanogenmod on some devices.
Now imagine that the number of devices was actually infinite.
And yet Cyanogen works on an almost infinite number of devices...
No, actually, it doesn't.
Like, I have 4 android devices in my house. One is terribly supported. The cyanogenmod version is out of date and very crashy. There are no updates.
And I TRIED to buy a supported device.
It was one of the things I looked for when I was shopping.
gods help anyone who bought some random device somewhere.
Which is, of course, what a fully-modular scheme wants: any random combination of anything. Which, if it worked, would be super.
But it's barely possible now in PCs, and only desirable for people with specific needs.
19:11
They would need to make sure the software works, sure. I hope they will ship it with Cyanogen and get them to support it.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Not "any random combination". Just a very small number of hand-picked choices for each module.
"Which do you want, the Kingston 1 GB RAM, or the Kingston 2 GB RAM?".
Not to mention the fact that some hardware changes require fundamental OS changes in order to be useful. Got a fingerprint scanner? now you have to change the OS's lock/unlock features to support that. Etc.
That's how I imagine the choice will be.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Sure, no experimental features, unless people on XDA come up with some mod. Which you know they will...
But I have to go lose some money in a poker game.
Adios!
unclips chat module
poof
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 maybe eventually.
@Cerberus great, thank you! Just ordered a case.

Hi y'all!
19:41
Hi! I'm currently applying for an internship. Now I got an email which asked me to provide some information. One was "Competing offer deadlines". What is this? Can anybody please help me?
I would guess they want to know if you have other offers with an earlier deadline, so they know when they must respond to you?
I've never heard that phrasing before.
Ok, that's what I thought, too. Thank you aedia!

The turkey was looking quite grim A disease had made it quite thin It’s the last the shop had “Oh it won’t be that bad” It turns out it was much worse for him

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I will fail :)
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Things were getting so bad, so hopeless, that I’m here to report that on Sunday I was forced to resort to the most powerful drug known to man.
I am of course referring to kitty.
And that it actually appears to be working.
Oh, and I don’t mean ketamine.
I mean two little baby kittens.
@tchrist That's how it starts.
No, I suspect that toxoplasmosis is how it starts.
here're some more for your addiction
20:38
Hm, does anybody know kitty’s LD50? :)
@tchrist Toxoplasmosis is how it ends.
@MattЭллен Arty-ar-ar.
The piano is unparallelled for working through emotions of all sorts, for chasing away verbal thoughts and regulating the mind. But kitty is most excellent at generating awwwwwww thoughts.
Now I feel like you're working the room.
Non capisco.
If I were doing that, I’d be posting pickies.
20:40
@tchrist OMFG, please post pictures ASAP.
Déjà dit. :)
See? It works on cornbread.
@tchrist wait, what?
So, no cigars?
Lemme see what I can do.
I couldn't get my favorite bourbon, so I'm having to Make do with Maker's. Pah.
21:00
@Robusto what about the Islay Brothers?
Basagna!
I'm not hearing pings today for some reason.
:O
Smoove.
I meant the ones in your liquor cabinet.
I know what you meant. I just wanted a bourbon and vanilla chai tea smoothie before dinner.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Hi! :D
@BraddSzonye :D
@Robusto Interesting.
21:07
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 then I can say anything I want.
I had some basagna for lunch this weekend.
Although I rendered it nearly inedible because I don't fully understand my microwave oven.
I was supposed to cook it for 7 minutes at full power and 7 minutes at half power. But because I don't understand how the power controls work, I nuked it for 7 full + another 7 full + 4 minutes half (after which I realized my mistake).
:x
@MετάEd be my guest.
See my vest.

Q: Meaningless s- and f-?

TimI saw some words on etymonline, started with s-, which seems meaningless For example, slack actually means "lax". There are also other words, if you delete the starting letter s or f, they are still words, but may have related or different meanings. I haven't found where this has been mentioned...

Tim kinda has a thing for affixes and minimal pairs, doesn't he?
21:13
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I'm your pest.
I only think of you / on two occasions / that's day / and night
Speaking of smoove.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Got yer swerve on tight, gal.
21:15
The last is so you can see how small they are.
Kids of the cathole. I don't know
@tchrist please give them a thousand snuzzles for me!
Also, toe shoes!
@Robusto it's 5:00 somewhere. Hey, like where you are.
Those aren’t my shoes: they’re the houseboy’s.
@Robusto :(
I stopped watching that one a few into S3. :(
21:21
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Hey, blame Matthew Weiner, not me.
@Robusto that weiner.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Yes indeedy. Some advantages to living on the Right Coast.
@tchrist Never feel sorry for a man who has a houseboy. Or a plane.
what is a houseboy?
similar to a poolboy?
Sort of.
A little like this.
I think the maracas are extra.
they never wear much clothes right?
21:28
I guess not on the beach in Mexico. But I've never had one.
The black&grey mackerel-patterned striped tabby is 9 weeks only, super energetic, and reallt adventurous.
Medium hair, he is.
The orange&white longhair is just a charmer, very warm and cuddy, and not as skittish. He isn’t quite giving into the dominance game the tabby wants to play, but I think he is too nice to win long run. They do get along well together and keep me up all day and all night.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Now I need names.
Forest and Fire? Probably not: imagine yelling FIRE out the back door at my place.
Jorma and Tore would be unexpected names for those guys
pretty good^
21:31
sed and awk?
vi and vim?
Both are pretty feisty if need be, but the longhair is more of a lapcat and the other guy is into mischief.
Maybe name them for my and the houseboy. It would make it hard of guests, though.
@Robusto Somebody has to clean up after me and watch things while I'm gone.
Ninja could be a name
Firefox?
Foxfire?
Ninja and Catbread?
Ember?
Brio is a good name imo, used it on one of my dogs but he is long gone now. Means happiness or something like that in Latin I think.
Means fire.
Or energy. Gusto. Like con brio in music.
Rock out with your cock out. That sort of thing.
@Robusto still good
Speaking of cats. Mine are very sure it's dinnertime.
Laters.
you could name them Value-added and Outsourced
This always makes me smile.
Think I have posted it before.
> Public Class Foo Is Value-Added By Bar
> Public Mission Critical Function sayName( Value-Added String Name)
@tchrist Awwwwwh!
Name them PHP and AHK. The two most wonderfulest programming languages ever.
Or ask on ELU what to name your cats. Yeah, that's it.
21:50
@Robusto you masshole.
He didn't exactly ask.
> But please, don’t ask any questions about the following topics. They are out of scope for this site.
> * Naming, including naming cats
Alien and Predator.
The Sound and the Fury.
Gog and Magog.
The Ghost and the Darkness
Abbott and Costello
Ask and Ye Shall Receive
Raphael and Michaelangelo. Or Raphael and Michael.
@BraddSzonye It's a very thin line.
@BraddSzonye Immediate disqualification for TMNT reference.
Stop and Go.
Wait and See.
22:03
Heh, my background is more art history than comic books.
Although I guess if one's an orange tabby, Leonardo would be more appropriate.
Apr 17 at 15:28, by cornbread ninja 麵包忍者
Peaches and Cerb
@BraddSzonye Then you should have said something more esoteric. Like Van Eyck and Holbein.
I also like angels!
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 But Cerb is a mutant dog, not a cat!
Precious and Few.
Scylla and Charybdis.
22:04
Are they both toms?
Tom's tom club.
I have named two dogs Beast. The idea was that the second one was going to be Beast II but they messed up the registration
For female dogs it would be really easy, just Bitch++
I named my second dog Deuce.
Well, let me just tell my little tale of woe. Today, three weeks from Code Complete for one section of a product, management decided that we needed to get the UX Architect to weigh in on how our product has to fit in with a new product that isn't going to be out for two years and hasn't even begun to have specifications! Yes! The world is that insane! And we have to include her input in a way that won't screw the schedule.
haha
Standard
In two years, the whole platform UI could change.
22:07
I took out three one-hundred-dollar bills and tossed them on the table and said, "I'll take the over for three hundred." Nobody saw my bet.
That sounds like fun.
And they call that management.
that is the definition of management in practice I think
And we met with said Architect and she asked us how we could best incorporate her input. I said, "What input?"
Cat names: Ludwig and Van
22:10
Please. Let's not say things we can't take back.
Shiny & Costly could be an option
I've been busy cropping images that we're probably not going to use for anything, so that I can tick a box saying they're all done. I think I might have gone insane already.
can you script it?
It only just barely requires a human, so I keep getting distracted.
Sadly, no.
g'nite
22:13
I've got Photoshop actions and everything, but I still have to look at the pictures to see that they come out sensible.
Bai!
In the long-forgotten past, I would have been able to foist this off on a graphic designer, but now that's also me.
I'm watching tutorials, average is at 2x speed but 3x is not uncommon
How fast you can watch them?
@JohanLarsson I've tried to script Adobe stuff before. Their API sucks ballz.
Gotta go.
22:23
@aediaλ vlc goes up to 8x but I'm not ready for that yet
'Night!
@JohanLarsson Ah. I don't think I would ever be ready.
night early in us today?
Nah, I just got here.
It does get dark early here right now though. We haven't set our clocks back yet either to get that extra hour (for the majority of the US for whom Daylight Savings time ends next Sunday).
our ended last sunday

Dinnertime! Cya!
The latest edit to this answer boggles my mind. In order to demonstrate that siren no longer has negative connotations, RyeBread added this definition: “The classic tease. A girl who leads on multiple guys with either her attraction or seductive personality, only to reject every offer sent her way; leaving the guy to grieve over his shortcoming.”
This is not negative how, exactly?
I'd like to add another comment to that effect, but 1. the comment thread on that answer is already too long, and 2. it's like talking to a brick wall.
