00:04
And bye.
00:41
Is there anybody out there?
> By Tuesday, military helicopters had flown nearly 2,400 people and more than 850 pets to safety in what officials said was likely the largest such airlift since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005.
Don’t forget the pets.
Meanwhile, I have a nightmare where my basement used to be.
Again?
Still raining?
Yeah. Worse. No.
Well, we got the crawl space emptied out of the crap.
And opened the door to the sub-basement.
And found 8" of standing water.
Then we looked at the track in the foundation where the water had come in the other room.
Under the plaster, it was clear that somebody had tried to fix before, and had done it wrong.
Major work.
Nothing that insurance would ever consider covering.
I have a professional company in working on it, but it is not going to be pretty.
Oh, dear.
Water came in "the other room"?
The bedroom.
And the crawl space.
And the laundry room.
And a great deal in the sub-basement.
There is now a mighty pile of unsalvageable flotsam and jetsam piled upon my driveway, just like everyone else on my street has.
But I did get over 2" more on Sunday.
So the storm dumped over 17" on me.
That’s more than we get in plenty of even semi-dry years.
Average is like 18", maybe 20" of you push it in the foothills.
Huh, so the water got a lot higher than a few days ago?
00:51
I hadn’t gotten into the sub-basement.
That sucks.
The water in the other places didn’t get “a lot higher”, but it certainly returned to pump out of tiles at the bottom of my staircase.
So they’re bringing a pumping truck/device tomorrow.
First it was only in your basement, now it came into your bedroom?
That's higher, right?
Hm. No.
Not my bedroom.
The one in the basement.
Oh, you have actual rooms in there.
00:54
Mine is two floors higher, or maybe 5 half-floors.
Oh right.
It’s a finished basement.
It looks like part of the house.
Or did.
Only the crawl space where the furnace and water heater and storage is looks like what you would think of a basement looking like.
There are four other rooms down there.
I’ll be registering with FEMA just like everybody else.
Who?
I can imagine water damage to actual rooms must be significant.
The construction manager and his burliest guy came from a house with two feet of mud everywhere in its ground level.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security, initially created by Presidential Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1978 and implemented by two Executive Orders on April 1, 1979. See Federation of American Scientists reference above for effective date of April 1, 1979, stated in Executive Order 12127. The agency's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities. Obama declared us a major disaster area.
Everyone affected by the flooding in these now-17 counties is supposed to report to them.
There is money, but who knows how much or for whom. But we are all supposed to register.
Because insurance doesn’t pay for any of this.
Someone said the money would be a loan, not a gift?
01:18
Mostly they provide guaranteed loans, not real money.
Just got done listening to them.
They provide housing for up to 18 months. That is their primary focus.
Good evening.
Hi.
I see we have our own Leakypedia page now.
The 2013 Colorado floods are an ongoing natural disaster occurring in the U.S. state of Colorado. During the week starting on September 9, 2013, a slow-moving cold front stalled over Colorado, clashing with warm humid monsoonal air from the south. This resulted in heavy rain and catastrophic flooding along Colorado's Front Range from Colorado Springs north to Fort Collins. The situation intensified on September 11 and 12. Boulder County was worst hit, with up to of rain recorded by September 15. The flood waters have spread across a range of almost 200 miles from north to south, affect...

@Mahnax hello dostoievsky
or however it is spelled-some Russian names have multiple spellings
such as Chebyshev, mathematician
Chebychev, Chebysheff, Chebyshov, Tchebychev or Tchebycheff, or Tschebyschev or Tschebyscheff
@tchrist congratulations. -_-
You'll go down in history, like the Flintstones.

Q: Using Of "Above"

octrev-=,-.=,,.,.,.,-=== -,..,/,-/=,/-,=/=, For this sentence: "Object A is above object B." Does it necessarily mean that object A is directly above object B, or does it allow for the possibility that object A is merely at a level (altitude) higher than the level (altitude) of object B?

Guys
What does pick headed mean?
a girl called u that ;) @O0oO0oOO0ooO

hey stop it
just tell me its meaning
I am not sure, someone who picks his head, haha

there are not many people at this hour
it's night in North America
@O0oO0oOO0ooO maybe she meant pig headed
@Theta30, yeah google returned 0 results for pick headed :D

Yeah, pig headed is the phrase

@MattЭллен How do you come up with limericks so easily?
@JasperLoy it's not always easy, sometimes I sit for hours trying to come up with something, but it's just practice. The more limericks I write the easier it gets to write limericks
09:07
HI
@MattЭллен
How are you
Smear into his face sounds wrong to me. What do you think? It has to be on or onto?
mmm I like drinking coke
They are so good
do you know Coke is called Coke because it contains cocaine in it?
09:24
No, Coke is called coke because it makes you cocky.
@O0oO0oOO0ooO it used to contain cocaine. it doesn't anymore
coke is called coke because it's a shortening of coca-cola
@Noah you can say "rub into his face" so smear is not much different. I think onto sounds better
Actually I would go with "smeared around his face"

HI
What's the difference between trust in someone and trust someone ?
11:03
Hi!
@Noah Almost the same thing.
Is there a word that's pronounced syoo? [sju:] in IPA
Shoo? Shoe?
And hello!
that's u: not ju:
then, not in English
I guess it's /ʃuː/.
11:07
and the first name Sue is always pronounced su:, right?
yeah
"it's you" can end [sju:]
reason for asking: I was talking with non-English colleagues about someone called “Soo” and they didn't understand who I meant
or can be truncated to it
finally they went “Oh, you mean Syoo!”
11:08
thanks for the confirmation
no problem
hi @Cerberus :)
@Noah To trust in someone is less common. I would say it means in a way that you surrender some responsibility to someone, in addition to judging his character as virtuous with respect to a certain situation (as with to trust someone).
@MattЭллен Hi!
@tchrist You're finally in the papers here.
I do hope that's not you house.
Omm
Okay. Thanks. @Cerberus But we almost all the time use trust in God?
So your explantion makes sense.
Yes, because you already trust God: you don't need to say it. To distrust God would be absurd for a believer.
Yeah. Right.
I am sure that's not @tchrist's house.
I dont know what's happening to this country. Yesterday a navy guy shot 13 navy officers.
11:16
But if you trust in God with respect to a certain situation, you say, "instead of fretting over what will happen, I will just accept whatever God had in mind, it is (partly) his responsibility".
There's flood in Colorado. Wildfire in CA and bla bal
Oh, there are always minor disasters somewhere, aren't there?
It's because too many people deny climate change. if they trusted in scientists then God would forgive them
@Cerberus But as someone who practices relegion, I always say I trust in you, God. We trust in you, God.
and stop all the disasters
11:17
@MattЭллен That's one theory
I think it's pretty commonly used in the Bible and the Quran.
@Noah Yeah, it is probably part of your religion to accept that God will do certain things for you, that you have less responsibility.
@Cerberus Which brings us back to the subject trust in vs trust
> Yes, because you already trust God: you don't need to say it. To distrust God would be absurd for a believer.
So does it mean if we already trust a person we can use trust in?
If you say "I don't trust God", you're saying "I doubt his moral quality or the goodness of his intentions". If you say "I don't trust in God for my brother's return", you suggest that you may need to go on an expedition to get him, because God won't take care of it for you.
I think people say "I trust you" as a general statement, as well as for specific moments, but they only say "I trust in you" at specific moments.
@Noah You can, but you don't have to.
11:23
Okay.
@MattЭллен I guess because relinquishing responsibility is often done ad hoc, temporarily, while considering someone virtuous is more permanent?
yes, that makes sense
OK.
But anyway, as Noah suggested, there is a lot of overlap.
The difference is subtle: in many situations, you could say either.
nods
11:26
One more thing.
We do we use nods instead of nod. Looks like as if we are talking in the third person all the time.
Because I nod
it is meant to represent the third person
cerberus nods
it harks back to the /me command from IRC
Yeah, I pretend to be the computer talking, when I write half-sentences in italics. Usually (not always).
Okay. So it's an Internet thing.

11:50
@Cerberus What do you think of the face veil ban in the UK?
I think some are asking for a national debate.
Not sure if it's the same in your country.
12:01
Guys, I realised Americans tend to answer to questions such as "What did you have for breakfast" or "What did you eat" by saying such as chicken or beef, which are basically the main ingredient of food they had.
Do other westerners do this too?
sometimes
Doesn't it sound awkward? If you had a piece of garlic bread, then will you say "I had garlic for lunch"?
why would the truth sound awkward?
@O0oO0oOO0ooO no. because the main part of your meal was garlic bread, not garlic
"garlic bread" is a single unit
If someone had spaghetti bolognese, then saying they had "bolognese" is fine
I dont know why people are surprised by how Americans speak or answer certain questions.
I think it all has to do with Bush.
And Tony Blair. They really helped the masses know about our peculiar habits.

Q: Why is the Christian god being spelled with a lowercase letter?

Mari-Lou AIt's been going on for some time, but the phenomenon which was once seen as an act of rebellion is now becoming more commonplace. God, capitalized, is increasingly seen only at the start of a sentence. Leaving aside whether one believes in a god, or in the Christian God Himself, why is this conve...

I want this closed.
Hey, is that the same user who complained about too many up-votes?
It is, in essence, "why is this thing I made up happening?"
@cyberskull Sure is.
@KitFox You could have. You are our precious mod.
I could, 'tis true.
But I am annoyed by it, and when I am annoyed, I cannot be sure that I am exercising good judgement.
Well, invite her to the chatroom and we'll see how well she can think on her feet ;-)
12:20
I always thought there was god and God. god being the general term while God being the supreme, mighty being.
Not sure how accurate that assumption is, but I think she is asking something along the same lines.
Right, which is the duplicate question that has been cited.
So, why the annoyance?
She says her question is the other way around, why is God not capitalized when it's actually a name? And when I asked her to demonstrate that, she said she couldn't, but did I deny that that happens?
And it is not up to me to demonstrate that something she's asking about actually happens.
I think she is over thinking.
12:26
I think she is peeving.
Maybe both.
But now I am cross, so I will stalk off to a different room. Ping me if you need me.
Ping :D
Okay
no no, not :D, me
12:28
Ping me

@cyberskull We dont ping skulls.
Speak for yourself. I've pung plenty of skulls in my day.
What happens if you ping a ping pong ball?
12:43
correct
(trademark Ping-Pong)
@KitFox I think she is making stuff up in her head (I got that from your understanding. on first reading I didn't know what the hell she was asking)
the comments here are good for a laugh
@Mitch When you are over-educated that's what happens.
@cyberskull Which comments?
There are many.
@Noah She is a very welcome participant here, but that question is asking for a discussion of something that doesn't happen.
This is your professor speaking. Obviously, I can't stop you from posting questions from the problem set here but I can not for the life of me understand what is the benefit to you to ask here instead of in office hours! Am I really so bad at explaining?
12:50
There's nother one like that...
Also, this particular question is proved carefully in the textbook, in the very section that was assigned for reading. Your other questions (for example, about what the pullback map of coordinate rings looks like) show that you are not understanding the most basic concepts in the course. Why are you not asking the professor? The course is going to get a lot harder, and quickly! Would it be better to drop math 631 and take Math 593 instead?
Perhaps you think that asking for help in forums like these will help you write a thesis too? This is very sad and I hope you do some soul searching about why you want to be in graduate school.
@Noah I fear you do not have the work ethic required to become a mathematician, and coasting along filling up problem sets with solutions worked out by others on stack exchange (or in the office, or from the library, etc) is only going to prolong your agony in realizing this yourself. I welcome the opportunity to talk to you in person. Please make an appointment to come to office hours!
@cyberskull funny but so earnest and therefore harsh to do in a public place ("This is very sad and I hope you do some soul searching about why you want to be in graduate school")
agreed
Here's the 'other' one...

Q: Boogie - Negative connotation?

ConnorsFanI work in a company which has a product called "Boogie" (for reasons that the original owner knows). The product has been called that way for years in our French Canadian environment. Our few English Canadian clients are used to that name. Now, somebody said that the word "Boogie" does not sound...

I don't think there is a racial overtone to this (I've never heard it in that context, it has always been either nose stuff or a kind of dance/music thing). So it's like asking 'how do ghosts go through walls?'
Unless I'm wrong and people really do say it as a racial slur.
Number one, but I can't says as I've heard it that way.
But that's also weird, that is just says "a black" and not "a black person" or "A person with dark skin".
13:01
Huh. Weird.
"Boogie: Slang: Disparaging and Offensive. a black."
Who wrote that?
'like you said, "a black"? A broken key on the piano.
Something you put your chips on.
I can see how 'boogie man' (that collocation) might be considered a slur. But that's not the same thing as just 'boogie'.
like 'light' and 'lightning' or better 'house' and 'white house'
@KitFox ?? like nacho cheese dip?
Oh I get it...or a red.
Yeah, you got it.
You, {subject name here}, must be the pride of {subject hometown here.}
You, God, must be the pride of Ur.
@Mahnax you get to type in a reason.
13:15
@Mitch Why didn't you not uncapitalize that? Aren't you a rebellious atheist?
Favorite son...er father.
@KitFox Goddam them and their godless Gods.
@Cerberus his house is much bigger, I bet.
13:31
Okay, that's it. I can only watch so many Depeche Mode videos.
how many?
Four. It kind of depends on which ones, though.
I'm supposed to be resting my eyes, anyway.
have they been working hard?
Yes. I went to the eye doc on Monday and he said he could see a lot of eye strain.
Well, you should come over here and close your eyes then.
13:39
Sounds good. buys ticket
Excellent.
Did y'all have an exercise in Writer's yesterday?
We did, on the topic of 'safe words'.
