@M.A.R. Also, linguistics.SE is not necessarily reliable. Sure, some answers there (and here) are written by people with actual knowledge, but often as not, a question doesn't have an answer by such people - the answers strains at supplying reality but the answerer is barely figuring out the concept for themselves (and sometimes just plain misguided by the inability to pick out of their own scattered data (some right and some wrong) the explanation that makes sense.
@M.A.R. Wikipedia is also scattershot, some great resources there, but also some that is not so great.
@JaspervanLooij I've been fasting, a strict no food or water fast, since about five minutes ago. Mmmm...I can't still conjure up that vague feeling of eating an Oreo cookie, the crunch through the cookie, the flavor of chocolate and whatever that filling is. Uh oh... fast broken again.
