Bai!

1:33 AM
ok poodle

1:45 AM
Who are you calling a poodle?

*poodles

@Cerberus It must be raining cats and dogs: I just stepped into a poodle.
That sounds right. On my side of the puddle I have never heard them called anything but snow pants my whole life long. Out in Colorado I imagine they might call them ski pants. — tchrist 5 mins ago

Hah.
I take it your flight went well?

what fight?

2:00 AM
It was ok.

A: Difference between the adjectives and participles

John LawlerThe main difference is that Participle appears in the canonical Eight Parts of Speech (Donatus, Ars Minor). And Adjective doesn't. Donatus begins by summing up the Parts of Speech ('Partes Orationis'): partes orationis quot sunt? octo. 'How many parts of speech are there? Eight.' quae? ...

@JohanLarsson Flight.

@Cerberus A fugal endeavour.

Was it?

Insofar as all flights are by definition fugitive.
God the kittens love me to death!

Q: Is the phrase "I feel you" too colloquial?

blankaDoes the phrase "I feel you" sound too slangy and somewhat horrible to a British person? Is it ok to use it as a synonym of "I understand what you feel/say" in an informal, casual conversation?

Anonymous
2:14 AM
Does it feel "somewhat horrible"?

Anonymous
That sounds objectively answerable :-)

Anonymous
I like that question. It's funny.

@tchrist Was it the first time you cruelly abandoned them?

Yes.
For a week.

And they remain loyal!

2:16 AM
They had the houseboy-qua-kitsitter for occasional company.

@snailboat It is!

Randy wasn’t sure at first, as I walked into a black house with no other like that a lit headlamp upon my brow.
Um, that isn’t right.

Aww.

But after I brought stuff in, and showered, and especially after I’d fed them, he was very lovey-dovey.
@snailboat It does?
I don’t know what slangy means.
And how to measure the quasi-horribility index has always escaped me.
But it sounds pretty weirdo.
It’s like these creeps who reach out to people instead of contacting them.
You always have to suppress the urge to tell them to keep their groping hands to themselves.

2:21 AM
As far as I am concerned, you are strange hat.
I've always suspected it!
@tchrist Some cats take a while to get used to the idea that the slave is back.

@Cerberus but why?

Because all I have of you is your icon, and most of it is a strange hat.

@tchrist Well, I did attach a smiley face.

That's okay, though. I'm going to eat a pear, the best of all fruits.

So I'm satisfied for the evening. :-)

Curious.
I’m about to eat some mushrooms, the best of all non-animal-nor-vegetable fruits.

@snailboat Yay!
I didn't know snails liked pears, but it makes sense.

If the prefix and suffix necessarily occur together, as in en-XXX-en, then together they act as a circumfix‌. Consider the circumfixed verbs enlighten, enliven, enhearten, enharden, enripen, enbiggen. In all these cases, the XXX is an adjective, and applying this particular circumfix to said adjective produces a verb that bestows that quality on something. — tchrist 43 secs ago
I rather like the enbiggen neologism.
What the heck is that?
squinting squinting squinting

2:57 AM
@snailboat Yum!
@tchrist I don't see it.

Maybe a local bug.

@tchrist I had it too.

Curious.
Did the user self-delete and resubmit twice?
Doesn’t appear to have done so, no.

I'll ask Kit.

@KitFox I can see that I am going to have a problem with a certain user. They’re being a pest. You know who it is.

3:03 AM
What's up?
Oh. Huh. brb

It’s our revenant.
My God my kittens are so cute I just melt.

I don't know what made it do that.
I thought maybe edits, but that doesn't seem to line up either.

3:21 AM
There were ninja edits.
But I’ve never seen that trigger multiple notifications in chat.
Well, I’ve never noticed it.

I've not seen it either. Let me know if it turns up again.

Hya @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇
May I ask a short question?
What exactly does the following mean?
> Soft but persistent efforts led to most transactions between verified users in the system showing effective AML company policy.

5:34 AM
@Gigili I read it as a pat on the back for the effectiveness of the AML company policy.
The enforcers of the AML company policy used "soft but persistent efforts" which has "led to most transactions between verified users in the system."
Thus showing how effective the AML company policy has been.
What do you think @Ste @tchrist @Cerberus?

6:30 AM
Guys, I saw some people make "rabbit ears" with their fingers when they say certain words in a sentence. I'm assuming they do that if a word requires quotation marks, am I correct?
And what is it exactly called?

@EnglishMaster Do you mean this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_quotes
Air quotes, also called "finger quotes" or "ersatz quotes" are virtual quotation marks formed in the air with one's fingers when speaking. This is typically done with hands held shoulder-width apart and at the eye level of the speaker, with the index and middle fingers on each hand flexing at the beginning and end of the phrase being quoted. The air-quoted phrase is—in the most common usage—very short, at most a few words. While the term "air quotes" did not appear until 1989, use of similar gestures has been recorded as early as 1927. A single-handed quote is a simplified variation. The...

You're welcome!

There was a guy in my college who did this Air quoting constantly without knowing when to use it properly
It was funny

^_^

6:37 AM
For example when he says "I'm going for lunch" then he does air quoting at the word "lunch"

@EnglishMaster He might mean that his "lunch" is something more than just a lunch.

Yeah, he was always slightly grumpy

A "lunch": a good opportunity to be grumpy by oneself alone. :)
Not very related...
Air guitar is a form of dance and movement in which the performer pretends to play rock or heavy metal-style electric guitar, including riffs, solos, etc. Playing an air guitar usually consists of exaggerated strumming and picking motions and is often coupled with loud singing or lip-synching. Air guitar is generally used in the imaginary simulation of loud electric, or acoustic guitar music. Contests Organized air guitar competitions are regularly held in many countries. The first on-off air guitar competitions were organized in the early 1980s in Sweden and in the United States. Sin...

Q: The position of "always" in different sentences

Ice GirlI want to know about the position of always in different sentences. For example: Always she is tidy and on time. Is it correct or not?

@badass I think I don't see it as a war. Is it a war?

6:50 AM
@DamkerngT. they have different opinions...
...and no real agreement.

I think different opinions are healthy, as long as they are seeking the truth. But I'm afraid that the answers will confuse the OP even more.
Adverb placement is not trivial.

That's what I meant.
The OP needs a yes/no type answer.

You suggested her to ask it in EL&U?
(I didn't read ELL scrollback yet.)

No, snailboat told her to ask it in ELL

Hmm... How come did it end up in EL&U?

She put it there instead.

Ah, I see. She only has an EL&U account.

I should be easy. Perhaps one of us should tell her.

hi @Jasper

Now my "cubicle" answer has gotten 6 upvotes and 4 downvotes, pretty good.

Ste
Morning all!

@Ste Are you still collecting hats?

morning
@JasperLoy I don't understand why you're getting downvotes. c'est la vie

10:42 AM
@MattЭллен Well, because "stall" is the common term in AmE. It's understandable, actually.
But the use of "stall" is something new to me.

Hoozah.

bless you

Is it Monday yet?

It is Monday here.

Ste
@JasperLoy - Yes. Although it has transpired that I can't award myself the "Oh the Horror" hat. I need to ask another five questions for Binx and still trying to crack the secret hats.

10:43 AM
I think so

Then I'll be posting my MC-bait question today.

I expect to see OVER 9000 answers.

@RegDwigнt MC=Mariah Carey.

so it'll be CW'd in under a minute

10:44 AM
I'll wait just a couple more hours till the US has woken up.
I think Rob or Kit should be a reliable enough indication.

!!are you awake yet?

@MattЭллен All signs point to no

@MattЭллен and I will unCW it even faster!
That's not really the plan, though.

@MattЭллен Geezis, did not know there is such a command.

ah! the power of a mod.

10:45 AM
It doesn't matter if it's CW. I am aiming at views.

@JasperLoy there isn't, exactly. it's more of a magic 8 ball type thing

It would be better if it's not CW, because then perhaps a whole bunch of people could get their bowties.

Ste
MC gets views.

@RegDwigнt true, true

remains secret then

10:46 AM
@JohanLarsson yeah.
The headphones.

but you have it

@JasperLoy ask it a yes/no type question for similar results

@JohanLarsson So?
I may not have secret hats?
Since when's that?

trying to help here :)

!!do you like coffee?

10:47 AM
@JasperLoy Absolutely not

Anyway. Pro tip: if a hat is secret, it says "secret". Pro tip two: if a hat says "secret", it is secret.
@JohanLarsson see, if you had a post on ELU, you could get some headphones.

I have a comment with poor wording

Hm...

I entered the hatgame by accident/bug

Wow, this Susan has a lot of rep this month.

10:51 AM
Still only on page 4 overall.
I only start worrying about people that are 10k points ahead of me.

I have afeeling Jasper does not worry about rep at all

On math SE, they have a congratulations post on meta when someone reaches 100k. Perhaps we should do the same for Barrie.
@JohanLarsson That's true, after I deleted my 20k accounts, lol.

@JasperLoy I thought at 100k people got a unicorn painting.
Oh wait, that's 200k.
Sorry, Barrie, still a bit to go.

I thought carefully before deleting my 20k accounts. I considered whether it will be beneficial to put it in my CV when applying for something, and the answer was no.

Until one day you find out that the answer is yes, and can't do anything about it.

10:55 AM
@RegDwigнt This is new to me.

You see, when you have 20k, you don't need to mention it. But when you need to mention it and don't have it — ...

Good thinking, lol.

Of course it is.

I predict Barrie will reach 100k in 2014.

I predict you won't.

10:57 AM
Yes, I think your prediction will come true.

@JasperLoy but at least you are more careless with the rep :)

I think this time I will keep my accounts instead of deleting them.

Sounds good imo
not much upside to deleting

Ste
@Ekhumoro - you now have the hat.

At least I can come to this chat whenever I want.

11:10 AM
No! The room is closed on Wednesday between 1:00 and 1:01 AM!

@RegDwigнt Why?

So we can have a minute to trample on your wish to enter it!

Ste
11:22 AM
@Jim now has the hat.
That's everyone who had 40 votes with the hat.

Thank you.
I wonder why the rest is still sitting at <39.

Ste
Shame I couldn't give it to myself.

Well we are working on that.

Ste
Are we?

Well, you still need 24 votes.
But the glass is almost half full.

Ste
11:28 AM
I see. I will make (another) shameless request for votes and you can mod-star it!
Guys - please help me get the Horror Hat. Click here and upvote to help me out! Thanks.
3

The problem with that is that everyone in this room is aware of it already.
We need outsiders.

Ste
How do we lure them in?

I dunno. I suppose some will show up on NYD to get free hats.
I'll put up an announcement for that in due time.

Ste
Sounds goof.
*good

You could also comment on people's answers to whom you award a hat. "Here's yours, now please return the favor, thanks".

Ste
11:34 AM
Still haven't got the Eureka. Although I thought I had sussed that one.
Yeah, that's a good idea too!

Not everyone in the club is also a regular in chat. Far from it.

11:46 AM
@Ste used up my votelimit, feels a bit dirty.

Ste
@Johan But you get a hat for that too.

but I tried to stay out of the hatgame :)

Ste
Everyone gets sucked in. Eventually.

Do most Indian people learn English as first language?

at least I now have something to cover my face with so I don't scare anyone

11:52 AM
but having a scary face is half the fun!

I have a bunch of empty F# projects also, can't get started

I don't think that will get you hats

In English speaking do you consider it as "filler" too if you have no idea what to say next and instead of saying "uh" or "ah", you say "perhaps" "maybe" "wait"?

@JohanLarsson what are you thinking of starting?
@EnglishMaster yes

Just random stuff to get feet wet, Nc parser could be fun.

oh, is that the sort of thing 3D printers use?

not sure could be
It is a language for programming machines

I know the makerbot at my local hackspace runs on g-code
probably the same g-code

Do you prefer aggregate or loop?
hashCode = Properties.Aggregate(hashCode, (current, p) => (current*397) ^ p.GetHashCode());
I think aggregate reads poorly
foreach (var p in Properties)
{
    hashCode = (hashCode * 397) ^ p.GetHashCode();
}

I don't really know f#. aggregates look a bit like comprehensions?
I prefer comprehensions

that was C#

12:14 PM
oh :blush:
I haven't come across aggregates

ah. we don't use 4.5 yet, so I won't get to try them out unless I do it at home
hmmm
looks useful
I would probably prefer it over for loops

ok, prolly a matter of getting used to it

oh, it is in version 4
hmmm

R# keeps nagging that it wants aggregate

12:19 PM
maybe next Christmas, eh?
it's a functional way of doing accumulators
I like that

The JA Rule hair is so common now that it's been pushed back in the sorting order all the way behind Bounty Hunter.

I probably just use sum and average, I don't know of times I've needed an accumulator that isn't one of those two

Even Reanimated is harder to get.

well, we like to chat about writing, but don't think we know enough to participate in the site, properly
at least, that's how I feel

Electric Engineering is coming online. I suppose that means we will soon see some Americans here on ELU as well.

It would be a nice feature if the message timestamp would show both local time for sender and reader i.e. 14:09 23:09

I dunno, what does user X care how late it is where user Y is?

I would, of course I could look it up but think it would be a nice convenicence

Well. This is a chat. You could ask.
For everyone else, it's just clutter.
It'd be very useful 1% of the time to 1% of users, but very unuseful otherwise.

worst idea ever?

Nah, I don't know. You'll have to try harder for that.
Perhaps three timestamps, the local time, the server time, and the Tehran time, in Roman numbers, transliterated into Cyrillic.

Q: Idiom or word for a very crowded place

RegDwigнtThere is a popular idiom in Russian for describing a really crowded place: "(there's) no room for an apple to fall" ("яблоку негде упасть"). I struggle to think of anything similar in English, and the dictionaries I consulted were of no help, simply translating it as "crowded" or not even inclu...

I'm preparing for an exam and I just want to receive some suggestions

Oh, and ideally, one suggestion per answer please.
So people can vote on them.
You can always combine them into a single answer after a couple days, editing the most upvoted

This is not just a hat for myself, this could get you all some bowties.
@EnglishMaster were you going to post sound files? I for one don't have sound right now...
