I turned down an invitation for dinner and beer tonight for the unlikely event that motivation to write some code would happen.

Christmas code.

or the lack of it

4:23 PM
109 behind Web Apps.

4:35 PM
@RegDwigнt That's all?

Aye.

Wait, didn't we beat them already?

So if people are active today, we could actually get them as soon as tomorrow.
@Robusto that was Linux and Unix.

Oh, and Code Review.
Right.

Yeah.

4:37 PM
I don't know. All the low-hanging fruit has been plucked already.

Anyway. If we beat WebApps, that's top 10 for us.
At last.
@Robusto no I mean the Christmas hats.

We could run the Enlightened queue again.

@RegDwigнt So do I. Metaphor. Look it up.

We could easily get a hundred of those or more. We should have enough active users.
WebApps, on the other hand...
yesterday, by RegDwigнt
Seriously, their top three have only 33 hats combined. And the last 128 pages out of 129 are all people with two hats or less. The last 124 pages are people with just one!
Frankly, this is looking better and better for us.
knocks on wood
And then there's still the New-Year chat hats.
And if this room won't be on fire, nothing will.

I wish there was a way to tell how close you were on reviews, per category.

4:40 PM
Yeah that sucks serious balls.
Especially since you are then pretty much forced to take reviews away from others in queues you no longer need.

I ewmwmvwe rh.

Sorry?

I remember that.

@RegDwight: You appear to have spilled some IPA symbols all over the ground. Shall I help you pick them up?

Fingers were not in right place, and wasn't looking while typing.

4:42 PM
I still don't have Upboated.
Or Archaeologist.
Or Marauder or Oh, the Horror. Or Robocop.

@DamkerngT. I keep misreading "Ask Patents" as "Ask Parents." Every single time. Always.

Those are the only ones I can get which I haven't already gotten. Some, of course, are impossible. L'Chaim, for instance. They weren't even giving hats when that one was supposed to be earned.
@RegDwigнt Hmm. I wonder if there are Parent Trolls.

@Robusto that one should be easy! Go to the Unanswered tab and pick some low-hanging fruit.

@Robusto You can't get the Voltaire hat, either.

@Robusto for the marauder, go post an answer here.

4:44 PM
@tchrist Segreti.

@Robusto C'est ça.

I used to think we'd have to delete the marauder question after April 1st is over, but now I am actually considering just locking it, but keeping it around as a canonical example of how easily folk etymologies can come about and how believable they can be.
It could prove quite useful.
By which I mean there have been occasions already on which I wished I could link to something just like that.
@Robusto oh, and make sure that you sort by date. It must be old low-hanging fruit.

A: What is a “marauder”?

RobustoA Marauder is a World War II American twin-engine bomber. It was notoriously difficult to fly, and was nicknamed "The Widowmaker" because it killed so many pilots.

@Ste
BTW, Ste, does the new answer always have to be voted higher than the last for the hat to be awarded?

The Huldra is a seductive forest creature found in Scandinavian folklore. (Her name derives from a root meaning "covered" or "secret".) In Norwegian folklore, she is known as the skogsfru or skovfrue (meaning "Lady (read, counterpart of a Lord) of the forest"). She is known as the skogsrå (forest spirit) or Tallemaja (pine tree Mary) in Swedish folklore, and Ulda in Sámi folklore. Her name suggests that she is originally the same being as the völva Huld and the German Holda. A male hulder is called a huldu, or, in Norway, a huldrekarl. Male huldes, called Huldrekarl, also appear in Nor...
Please disregard the vulva.

My wife insists I disregard that advice.

he said please

Note at feminists: we are not, I repeat: not, disregarding vulvas in this chat.

I forgot what vulva is.

Disregard your forgetfulness and you'll remember.
Huhuh, remember.

4:58 PM
@JasperLoy That's the trouble with book learning.

@Robusto Yes, I am still a virgin, lol.

Yes. Books != vulvae's. As demonstrated by the many letters different between the two.

You've left space for vulvarum.
That's the collective for a room full of 'em.
Or a parking lot, as the case may be.
Boulder has a lot of those, plus outies and subes.

@tchrist She is mentioned in this song poor rhyme on that row imo. Lyrics are ok overall though. The song is a cover.

A: How do I quote in a paper a quote that someone else used in a book?

RobustoYou would quote the original with an "as cited by" mention. For example Writing in his The Perennial Pilosophy, Huxley quotes Eckhart: "He who suffers for love does not suffer, for all suffering is forgot."* *[Eckhart citation here]

Blatant badge-seeking. I need Archaeologist.

5:08 PM
Hm. Nov 7th. Not sure that's old enough.
Lemme look it up...

It says 30 days.

@JohanLarsson There's one of them in this story, too.

> Answered more than 30 days later as first answer scoring 2 or more
Yup.
Very well.

I misspoke. I need Revival, not Archaeologist.
So I should have a hat incoming.

Yeah, but I misunderstood what you said so I understood you correctly.

5:11 PM
@Hugo Those are nice because they cost no votes to implement.

My disc drive burns DVD+RW much faster than DVD-RW, and the store owner said there was no difference.

Perhaps you added some igniting liquid?
It's an easy mistake to make.

@JasperLoy Why are you bothering with burning DVDs? What is this, 2001?

@Jasper Have to voted on my two thingabimbettes in your current incarnation?

@Robusto Just trying out more linux distros.
@tchrist Where do you need a vote?

A: What is a verb for "illusion"?

tchristUm, what do you mean “illude does not exist”? Sure it does. It’s just a tad rare these days. From the OED: illude /ɪˈl(j)uːd/, v. Now rare. Also 6 illud. Etymology: ad. L. illūdĕre to make sport of, jest or mock at, ridicule, occas. to trick, impose upon, f. il- (il-1) + lūdĕre...

I am of no help there.

A: What animal is a “weefil”?

tchristf  vs  ſ That’s merely a “long s”, not an f. Therefore, it is not a weefil but rather a weeſil — meaning of course, a weasel. We can rule out weevil because it has the look not of a bug but of a musteline critter. Here are some examples in various faces — namely, in roman, italic, scrip...

OK, done.

@RegDwigнt I know. Once all the active members have voted, it's hard to find others.

5:14 PM
@tchrist Long since upticked.

Yes, thanks.
Golds are hard to come by.

Got my boat.
30 hats will tie me for 13th site-wide. Again.

It's below zero here in Lake Geneva: I need all the Christmas hats I can get.
I didn't even wear a coat to the airport yesterday, the sun was so bright. Packed the coat though.

@tchrist Hah. Laughable!

@tchrist Oh, duh.

We have ~+7°C here all week, !cool

Do multiple hats of the same type count in the sum of hats?

We have like 10°C and rain.

@Jasper Have you looked at these lately, I'm aiming for views not votes:

Q: Where does the word “jism” come from?

tchristAnother word of mysterious origins of jism, in the sense of spunk. The OED mentions it is sometimes spelled jizz, and may even be the precursor word to jazz. But neither the OED nor Etymonline gives any etymology for this word. The oldest citation is from 1847, and there are many citations ...

Q: Where does the word “wankers” come from?

tchrist The term wanker is derived from the verb wank in the sense of to masturbate. However, neither the OED nor Etymonline can trace it further back than that: both claim it is of “obscure origin”, which just means they don’t know. As with my question on snogging, this term seems to have come into ...

18 sites out of what, 100?
Still a lot of work left...

Sloth.

Yeah.
This hat's pretty much my last chance to get to the top 5 on every site of the network.

Megatherium (from the Greek mega [μέγας], meaning "great", and therion [θηρίον], "beast") was a genus of elephant-sized ground sloths endemic to Central and South America that lived from the late Pliocene through the end of the Pleistocene. Its size was exceeded by only a few other land mammals, including mammoths and Paraceratherium. Description Megatherium was one of the largest land mammals known, weighing up to 4 tonnes and up to in length from head to tail. It is the largest known ground sloth, as big as modern elephants, and would have only been exceeded in its time by a few spe...

But do not exclude malice.

5:23 PM
Prudent.

Rule out. Should be do not rule out.

Better?

@Robusto No. But site totals only include those from that site, whereas the network total includes all types.

Is there a mediaplayer that handles 3x speed nicely? The audio gets bad using vlc.

@Hugo Really?
Then I'm doing it wrong.

5:25 PM
@tchrist Yep, check it, the numbers are different
I only have Old Hat counted in the network total

@JohanLarsson sorry I'm a noob. I only use VLC and Mplayer, and I never use 3×.

not even for porn?

because I don't have it for ELU

@JohanLarsson why would you speed up porn? Use skip. I mean, who's the noob now?

ha, lame joke by me, regretted it just before pressing enter. Not even a joke.

5:29 PM
And who needs to listen to porn at 3× the speed? There's Mozart for that.

Increasing playback speed is very useful when watching talks and tutorials ime.

I already do not understand the talk on The Wire.
You saying speeding up helps?

helps me staying awake

Well. Try Mozart. I can only repeat.

could also be a distraction

Q: What's the formula for f-stop equivalence between different sensor sizes?

tchristThe famous Group f/64, to which Ansel Adams and several other prominent photographers of that day belonged, were named that because of the f-stop: The term f/64 refers to a small aperture setting on a large format camera, which secures great depth of field, rendering a photograph evenly sharp...

You mean the Russian one?

I am but number 6 on photography.
@tchrist no the one I just posted. The Hungarian one.

IIRC your wife is a professional photographer, right?

My Russian ones so far are faring rather well. Upvotes across the board.
@tchrist nah, not professional.

Well, amateur. Avocation not vocation.

Hm. That guy does mean it.
I think it's time to get out the duct tape.

You mean, use The Force?
Perl is like the Force: it has a light side and dark side, and it binds the Internet together.

@tchrist yep +1

6:11 PM
@JohanLarsson Thanks.

Duct tape video. Highly relevant.
Direct link to quote.

@JohanLarsson Do you know the answer? I feel like it must be some standard formula.

The Internet really has everything, even N64 videos. Fascinating.

@tchrist I don't, my guess is that distance from aperture to sensor could be a factor also.

hmmmmmm

6:15 PM
Degree of parallelism of the rays
pretty sure there is a way to write that in English, cone or angle perhaps

I don't think so. I think it has to do with the amount of magnification needed to make a standard 8x10 print compared with a contact print.
An 8x10 transparency is 1:1 for a contact print.

also diffraction might make small apertures meaningless for small sensors
I had it wrong when reading that I read it as there will be no difference due to sensor size.
regrets that I wrote anything now :)
and now I got a hat also

Hurray!

it was an accident :)

English has special words for horse-colors.
Does Swedish?
@Reg What about Russian or German?

@tchrist Apelgrå, is one

Not there’s a horse of a different color.

Think apelgrå is dapple gray. "With spots like apples"

Wormy apples?

6:31 PM
why wormy?

I like this self-referentialness.
(That's the nine hats from the last four minutes.) Now off for more productivity.

@tchrist Genuine interest or conversation? I could ask gf, she is a horse geek.

@JohanLarsson Apples aren't supposed to have spots.

@JohanLarsson Just curious.

Ohhh the spots on the horse are like, apple colored. I bet that's what you meant.
I have a cold and it's making me a bit daft.

the spots on the horse are supposed to look like apples. Does not make any sense to me.

one of them is a comb

Comb?

can be a candlestick also, hard to tell

Is it the menorah?

6:41 PM
I'm putting on the menorah but I don't know how long it will take to show up in chat.

I don't see any hats here either way, tried ctrl +F5

@tchrist Just viewed both of them.

Aww. I see lots of hats.

But our current hat is the nicest!

It's weird though that my own avatar next to the chat box still has on the Three-hats and not the santa hat I see myself wearing in the chat itself, but whatevs, that's two hats for the price of one!

6:45 PM
Huh, that counts as an answer?

@RegDwigнt We need to teach him how to use the site.

I think he does, he made it CW.
I'm just not sure why the question as a whole is still up, then.
But I must move on to another site already.

Or of bonanzium.
Or the singular of bonanzae, which I think is a Japanese thing.
And here I thought the past tense of text was tested.

@Cerberus I actually fired an AK-47 a few weeks ago. Can't say I was impressed. It's smaller than I imagined it would be, and you have to get your cheek right down on the stock to fire it, so it blows your ear protection off.

@RegDwigнt Yeah, but @Cerb says that about everything.
