A: "You got it" vs. "I got it"

cartogram What does "get it" mean? 1) Catch it. Receive a punishment or scolding, as in If I forget anything on the shopping list, I'll catch it, or I'm really going to get it when I turn in my paper late. [Colloquial; early 1800s] 2) Understand something, as in He claims his plan is reasonab...

Okay, what's going on here?

maybe mplungjan got in in the grace period?
or maybe a comment was deleted?

No deleted comments.
So perhaps the former.
No idea!

@RegDwighт What's the question?

Or perhaps cartogram meant he copied it from the link that mplungjan posted as a comment.

@RegDwighт That's how I took it. Is that the question?

3:03 PM
@RegDwighт oh! right, yeah
I didn't see that

@MετάEd Yes. That's my question.

@RegDwighт That's my answer. It's a "cute" way to attribute the research effort.

It's a bold way to attribute the research effort.
For various meanings of bold.
Anyway. If that is the answer, it should not be an answer but a vote to close as GR.
That cartogram guy has been doing funny things all day.
Like, flagging his own stuff as "too localized".
Leaving a bunch of noise comments.
And then that weird suggested edit.

could be a troll. could be that he has two personalities. could be two+ different people using the same account. could be he needs some sleep

Is this seriously the first time "pussy" has been asked about?
It was a good opening gambit.

3:16 PM
Perhaps there's a deleted question somewhere.

@RegDwighт I hear there's also something wrong on the Internet.

Where? Who dared?

@RegDwighт I posted, then deleted this english.stackexchange.com/questions/101073/… , thinking it was too close of a match to english.stackexchange.com/questions/15634/… but then decided they aren't really close are they. What do you think?

Hi. I didn't find something but does someone know whether a Q exists about the equivalent word for "equidistant" in means of "equally distributed radial lines"?
Something along equi-angulant ;-)

@jcolebrand I say only a Shreverportian will know for sure. (Unless the Wikipedia article on Shreverport mentions the demonym, in which case it's GR.) In either case you can play your hand straight and link to that question and say I saw it, but it doesn't help me in my quest of calling people from Shreverport things.

3:22 PM
@RegDwighт well I deleted the one post, and I'm asking if it should be undeleted as not being a dupe.

And I'm answering that. :P
It's the incomprehensible room, though. Perhaps I have to adapt my style.
Undelete it unless the answer can be easily looked up.
And change the title to something specific.
Because the current title does make it sound like a perfect dupe, while the body is nothing of that kind.

@RegDwighт I can't undelete it

Ah!
Wait.

Sorry, thought we had established that
I see we did not

That is news to me!
What kind of nonsense is that anyway?

3:24 PM
I can only see that the page was removed by the author >.<

I thought they changed it so you couldn't undelete stuff deleted by a mod.

Yeah, I thought if you had the link and it was yours, you could see it.
Apparently not
@RegDwighт but the rule is generally applicable to other places, notably those that end in 'port'
>.< grrr, sometimes the rules counfound even me

Well it's undeleted and I added in the two things I suggested, now do whatever you please with it.
I do think you're looking for demonym, not eponym, though.

Possibly, hence I have a definition, but I brought out the tweet verbatim
Let's see what the community says, as for now, I have a meeting.

I'd drop the second paragraph completely. It only muddles the waters.
Just my twopence, though.
@jcolebrand the tweet uses demonym, which is what I'd use. It's you who brings in eponym.

3:30 PM
(muddies the waters)

@MattЭллен Hey. People are trying to troll here.

you should wait until fish stocks have risen to sustainable levels.

Hey now. Trolls are trying to peep here.

@MattЭллен s/to/ti/ ftfy

Risen ti sustainable levels?
Is that Italian?

3:37 PM
sí sí signor

That, on the other hand, is not.

they are Italian words if I was speaking Italian while using them

@MattЭллен but you wasn't, that's the point.
QED.

I guess you'll never know

Me? I always know.

3:40 PM
You? Always? no.

See, you are wrong again.
Never happens to me.

your wrong

I wrang, you wrong.

I am wrong about

Where is a good place to find tree diagrams of etymologies?

3:49 PM
There is such a thing?
People have too much time.
Wiktionary sort of tried that, but in text form, and only one or two levels deep.

Surely there is.

google images only seems to have trees of language families

I have seen these before. — MySky 6 mins ago
Very informative.
I am not sure what I am supposed to say or how to react.

ask if they're sure it's not déjà vu

MyEtymology seems to have some of the information. myetymology.com/spanish/pariente.html

3:53 PM
@MετάEd that's not a tree, though. That's just a different way to represent the information any dictionary has.
Wiktionary comes way closer to a tree.

4:11 PM
Wow, so much kerfuffle over this question.
Makes me think I've forgotten all my Englishes.
I don't get how "I'm someone like you yet like no one" is ungrammatical.
Or how "I'm someone like you, and yet like no one" is ungrammatical.
Those are both perfectly understandishable to me.

I am like to like you yet you are like no one.

It's lovely and poetic.

Like, you know.

Hiya.
It was a long meeting, and a hard one.

Jolly fun.

4:15 PM

Nonono, the other way round!
Take the big container with you.

"Oh I like the site. It looks good. Can you put our logos on the login page?"
"Well, if she does that, we'll have to put the logos from the other participating groups."

And make them bigger. In fact, forget about the login. And the page.

"We should have them in the banner, so they are always visible."
KitFox coughs gently. "How many logos?"
"About twelve."
"Then, no."

A project with twelve participants has no logo of its own???

4:18 PM
It's a pilot study.

I had to draw logos for projects with three participants, one of which dropped out as soon as I was done.
The logo still worked, though.

Nais.
I have no talent for that sort of thing.

It said "participant number three is an ass" in red Comic Sans.
See how it still worked?

They liked the logo I made for the main project, but I just cribbed it from the web and changed the colors to match our palette.
@RegDwighт Beautiful.

@KitFox some people will pay you extra if you just paint the IE logo a different shade of blay and pass that one off as your work.
It will make them feel cozy and familiar and at home.
Psychology.

4:21 PM
Some people. But not my people.

And who are you, Missy Elliot?

Tu sabes meine vrai Name.

It could be an anagram of Missy E. I never checked.

si si señora

It's not.

4:23 PM
You sure?

No.

Oh noes not the Brit with his Spitalian.

hey, it's English if i use it when I'm speaking Dutch.

What if you misuse it while reading Dutch?

We're more than halfway through the meeting when the project lead says something about the schools in Washington, and I interrupt with a "We don't have any schools in Washington."

4:24 PM
Oh, a nice way to mark that milestone.

boom! headshot

Normally I'd just have a look at the watch, but I guess your way works, too.

@RegDwighт oh ffs, did I really?

Then he argues with me and I push the spreadsheet in his smug-ass-face. "This is the same spreadsheet I sent you last week. None of these schools are in Washington."

@jcolebrand just sweep it under the rug already.
It's conveniently set off as a paragraph in its own right.
Just nuke it.

4:26 PM
Aye
ok, removed

And the bastard counters with "So what is our training plan?"

This gotta be the International Day of Silly Edits.

Oh you didn't get the memo?

Thanks again @RegDwighт
Alrighty all, I'm out

4:28 PM
NP.
CU

@KitFox what a nonsensical fellow

@KitFox drive around a Latino slum with Denzel Washington for a day.

@RegDwighт I love you.

I do know.

@MattЭллен He's the one responsible for training.
He's just determined to make it look like I'm the one delaying the project.

4:30 PM
what an infuriating fool

The funniest part was that I realized last night that I never attached the spreadsheet to the email I sent last week.
So he never looked at it, never told me he didn't get it.

:D
what a buffoon

What is the word, program to|against|? an api?

Jul 27 '12 at 11:17, by RegDwight АΑA
Google Translate is stupid. "Confident manner in complete ignorance" should be "confident demeanour despite complete ignorance".

4:33 PM
@JohanLarsson With?
@RegDwighт Oh that's a much better translation. And that's why we should let the professionals do it.

@KitFox Though frankly, usually what you do really is "against".

@RegDwighт You had me at stupid.

@MετάEd nice. Because I thought I lost you at Google Translate.

@RegDwighт Contra

@KitFox no, communist. Get your terminology right.

4:35 PM
@RegDwighт I get lost there a lot.

Program width an api. (Had to write it to see it, still not sure but I trust you of course)

Width works nicely, too.
Adds a Scandinavian touch.

Some kind of bee-girthed object?

ok width it is then ty!

But...!

4:36 PM
This code is proudly presented by Absolut Vodka.

(try to) program despite an api

I was programming near the API at the time, but I didn't touch it in my last commit. Honest.

I was programming instead the API.

4:55 PM
I was programming in the apiary

Q: How do I use the word "da"

toyI have just learned German. I have heard a lot of people say the word "da" in conversation, but I don't know what it means. And dictionary doesn't help. Can somebody help me translate this word and give me some examples how to use it correctly.

"I have just learned German." made me chuckle.

Whoa.

The picture does look a bit like Neo.
With some greenish background, too.

4:58 PM

Right.
I be packin as well.

5:26 PM
Hello.

Writers Chat, going on now in The Overlook. Come chat with us (if you like).

I can't write.

Uh huh.

I can write in Dutch if you like.

5:46 PM
> “Retail postpaid ARPA (average revenue per account) grew 6.6 percent over fourth-quarter 2011, to $146.80 per month,” [Verizon] wrote in its 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Wow.
That is ten times what I spend monthly.
Profit margin is 41 %.
That means it costs them 86.61 monthly, and the rest is profit.
And of course "cost" is inflated, as it includes advertising, marketing, and other useless stuff.
And huge salaries and incidental payments for management.

Chrome is behaving much better in chat these days. I now no longer not recommend it for chat.

@JasonBourne I've been using it since I started to chat here. The one drawback of Chrome is that it does not do font fallback so well.
Last I checked, anyway.
What's a good way to be notified of suggested edits?

in the post

user19161
1
Q: Adverbial form of "timely"

Eric NelsonThe following sentence seems incorrect to me, because the adjective timely is being used as an adverb: Payments not received timely will be returned and additional interest will be due. That said, does timely even have an adverbial form? Timelyly?

user19161
I just answered this question after checking MW. I hope it is alright.

6:30 PM
@MattЭллен I mean, what's a good way to be notified as a 10K user of suggested edits in the edit queue?
Not of suggested edits of one's own posts, but of suggested edits site-wide.
I didn't explain very well.

user19161
@MετάEd You just refresh now and then and see the red square on top.

@JasonBourne That's what I do now.

user19161
@MετάEd And I think that is good enough.

@JasonBourne I notice that most edits get done long before I even notice them. I wondered if there was another notification mechanism ... RSS or something, that other were using.

user19161
@MετάEd No, 9000 people use the site.

6:33 PM
@JasonBourne What's the relevance of 9 000 to your answer?

user19161
@MετάEd Well, just saying that many users can approve edits.

user19161
Sorry, I don't express myself too clearly in chat.

@JasonBourne It's never a good idea to express one's self too clearly.

user19161
Often I say something which seems crap (maybe it is) but usually I have something not crappy in mind that I just don't elaborate.

@MετάEd yeah, I know, I meant by mail!

6:35 PM
@MattЭллен ... separated by a common language ...

user19161
I am now thinking of the distinction between in time and on time.

also, my jokes don't always work like they should

@MattЭллен They're not supposed to. We are supposed to misunderstand one another at least half the time.

user19161
Also, I just like to talk about various topics in chat, and I don't go for a point to point argument or debate.

@JasonBourne Yes you do.

user19161
6:38 PM
@MετάEd Well, meaning I don't bother to be too precise about what I say, that's all.

@JasonBourne You're doing it now.

user19161
@MετάEd Indeed!

I am thinking about doing away with amber.

Hello and good day.

Hello and good day to you, @Mahnax

@MattЭллен Thank you, sir.
So I finally got around to reading Harry Potter.

did you enjoy it?

6:50 PM
Yes, very much so.

@Mahnax yay! Harry Potter is fun. And also full of plot holes.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah, it's a lot of fun. I wish I had read it earlier in my life.

@Mahnax yeah you missed the chance to wait expectantly for new movies and books, and to speculate endlessly about what would happen next.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes. Also, I had some major things spoiled for me.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I can hear it, but I can't see it.

6:55 PM
I'm going to watch the movies after finals, I think.

@Mahnax haha. I had to stop one of my family members from spoiling the secret of Luke Skywalker's parentage for my children. :)
@KitFox weird. Big Brother must not want you to see how the US government works.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hehe, nice.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I tried to stop George Lucas from spoiling Darth Vader's backstory, but...
Hey, did you know that @Matt was published on the Nose today?

in The Overlook Hotel, 14 hours ago, by Neil Fein
Here's Matt's flash fiction: 419
> Please read now my proposition.
That made me laugh.
I read it on my phone this morning, so it had an extra air of authenticity.

7:06 PM
Oh no, @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇. I'm supposed to be studying, I can't read HP:MoR now!
closes tab
I need to go.
Goodbye.

@Mahnax you'll be back. Trust me.

7:24 PM
Afternoon!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I didn't doubt it for a second.
Not yet, though.
Hi @aedia!

@aediaλ aedia! Did you notice that HP:MoR is up to chapter 87 now?

What!?
Oh no! Why did you have to say that?!?
Musn't look. Musn't look.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That sounds like those Taiwanese dramas that have 500 episodes.

Oh, wow, I think I was behind quite a bit.

@JasonBourne I wouldn't know. But there are... or were, anyway, TV shows in North America that had daily episodes. and they were on for years.

I mean, on the thing that I'm obviously not looking at.

user19161
7:42 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, such as the infamous The Days of Our Lives!

NOT LOOKING!

user19161
@Mahnax Er, why so mathematical all of a sudden?

@JasonBourne It came to mind.

user19161
@Mahnax When are you going to change out of that horrible pic?

@JasonBourne When the time is right.

user19161
@Mahnax Very cryptic.

7:49 PM
@JasonBourne Ah yes, crypts. That's the first clue, that is.

user19161
@Mahnax Are you doing derivatives in IB now?

@JasonBourne No.

user19161
@Mahnax Have you finally tried Ubuntu?

@JasonBourne No, and quite frankly, I don't think I shall. I am pleased with my current operating system and feel no need to jump frequently from one to another.

user19161
@Mahnax Good, good.

user19161

Yeah someone proposed on meta a while back that we actually say [off-topic], [dupe], etc, rather than just [closed].
Can't even find that "a while back".

Oh. That.
Yeah, that's cool.

Q: Upfront reason for closing a question needed

Hexagon TilingCould a succint version of the reason for closing a question be given in main? Since the closing of a question usually implies some negativity, it would be nice if at least those closed due to "non-negative" reason of merely being a duplicate were noted as such, for example, Did Pooh learn Englis...

@KitFox Hey, it's the ol' grey sack!
I hope you laundered that thing in my absence...

Uh...

gingerly steps up to nudge grey sack with a hoof

Gawd, how can I be so idiotic?

8:52 PM
Are your object references still not referring themselves?

@KitFox by trying, trying and trying, trying and trying, and succeeding at last.

I put the DB name for the server and the server name for the DB.
I couldn't figure out why I wasn't connecting.

It's going... swimmingly is the one with lots of flailing, right?
Well, actually, it's almost done, but I also think I might have broken it irreversibly due to the aforementioned not understanding it.

9:09 PM
I have decided that I quite like HP:MoR.

@aediaλ Oops.
I'm surprised how easy it has been for me to uninstall and reinstall the DB on testing. I'm going to migrate it to production tomorrow.
Then, click, there are all the users. Click, they're gone. Click, there they are again.
So I can test it tomorrow and mess it all up and then just erase it.
Except that my connection won't open sometimes.
And I don't know why.

@KitFox Yay! Oh, you can't just leave them gone though? It would be so much easier without them...

Wouldn't it?

They're always doing things and asking for stuff.

Kevin MontroseStarting with the next build accept rate will no longer be shown. We're still keeping track of it on the backend for various things, but the negative behavior its display encourages outweighs its benefits.

Sniff. Or good riddance. But either way, for posterity:

but how will we tell help vampires now?
