9:08 PM
can it be? @aediaλ is back!

Hi @Mr.Shiny!

@aediaλ You were gone a long time. It's like, one day you said "brb", and we're all waiting
you missed all sorts of lego conversations.

38 mins ago, by aedia λ
I was kinda busy IRL for a while. I bought a house, and it was full of that purple wallpaper and other things that had to get fixed. And I moved several states. And started telecommuting and my not-commute got filled up immediately with stress and house. And my husband switched jobs. And things and stuff. So yeah!

And I've had Sarah Maclachlan songs in my head way less.

Aww.
I got a Lego pencilholder for the holidays!

9:13 PM
@aediaλ yeah one time, months ago, when I was talking to Kit: "Have you heard from aedia?" she was like "she's super busy, I got an email once, in the Cretaceous"

@aediaλ nice!
now that you have a house, do you have room for lego?

Now that you have a house, is it made of Lego?

I do! Or rather, I will soon. I'm not breaking any large amounts of lego out until the construction and remodeling settles a bit more.
As soon as I get a few more boxes and things organized in my office and spare bedroom I should have room to put a table in there to build something at least.
@Cerberus salivates slightly dreaming of house made of Lego

@aediaλ excellent!

A: Should "glamourous" be considered incorrect?

sjacksonI spell it "glamourous." I know it looks odd, but if I spell it "glamour" then I don't have a choice.

I am trying to think of examples to refute this.

@aediaλ You could be the witch of Hansen und Gretl, but different.

So far I've only thought of the obvious ones, like all + right = alright, fit + -ing = fitting, knife + -s = knives.
But I really am trying to come up with something closer to glamour + -ous = glamorous.

@RegDwighт *Humourous.

There must be something.
I know there is.

^

9:20 PM
face+palm=captain picard

^^

@Cerberus that won't refute that guy. He'll certainly write it humourous.

He won't, because the OED says no.

@Cerberus so?

user19161
9:21 PM
I have just deleted all my TeX SE comments too!

That should be enough.

The top answer on that page says that OED also says no to glamourous.
And COCA, and BNC.

A: Should "glamourous" be considered incorrect?

RegDwighтEdit in response to comments: as has been pointed out in the other answers, the spelling glamourous is included in the Oxford English Dictionary, which is why my answer doesn't so much as address the question of whether it is considered wrong by everyone, but rather tries to quantify its populari...

@RegDwighт That's wrong.
OED says "o, also ou" for glamo(u)rous.

flame + buoyant = flamboyant

And surely BNC will have 0 for *humourous.

9:22 PM
@MattЭллен very good.

Uhh.
Flamboyant was formed in French.

@Cerberus 9.

Are you sure?

@Cerberus oh! damn. I guess they can't spell

Oh come on. Are you trolling me?

9:23 PM
The exact same number as for glamourous?

No, I am not sure. I always take random figures off the ceiling.

@RegDwighт sorry. I did give you truly

I thought you mixed up glamourous and *humourous. It happens.

@Cerberus can you please just go read the answer already? It will be faster than keeping forcing me to repost it here one sentence at a time.
@Cerberus ah haha.
Well let me check, then.

I have read it.
Humourous is 14 times.
In BNC.

9:25 PM
Wow, you used a corpus?
OMG OMG OMG

I have used the BNC before.

Ah.
So why no COCA?
It's the same interface, one click away.

Well, I don't write in American English. So it has no use for me personally. As far as stylistic advice goes, I don't think frequency is terribly cogent.

frappé + cappuccino = frappuccino
that's a real one!

9:27 PM
And I find Ngrams more convenient anyway.

@MattЭллен good thinking. Let's bury him in portmanteaus.

No wonder Cerb is using BNC. He likes obsolete tech.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 that's it! thank you, it's been bugging me for ages.

Ahhh no portmanteaux. Those are only good if they're humourous.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 what is it?

9:28 PM
Otherwise they're stupid.

@RegDwighт coax cable connector
for, eg, 10-Base2 Ethernet

First time I see or hear.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 They use the same tech.
Besides, almost everybody likes obsolete tech.

@Cerberus whoosh

Consider how popular gramophones are today.

9:29 PM
grammar phones are for people who don't like lolspeak

Which ought to be called either graphophones or grammatophones anyway.
clenching fists in powerless gesture
Did I just spell Nazy?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 BNC always makes me giggle because of these connectors

apparently

How silly of me.
And I'm never silly.

no, never

9:31 PM
Why are people being so impatient in the comments on ELL?
It is not doing us any good.

this will go on your permanent record

OMG JUST HURRY UPPPP

Don't push them.

which will be played on a gramophone

@Cerberus yeah that.

9:31 PM
@MattЭллен Nooooooooo...

@aediaλ Me too! I used to operate a small 10-Base2 network. It was infuriating.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I know them from ham radio
...another exciting new up-to-date technology

Radio?
I have a wireless!

mmmmmm. ham radio. so tasty

Yay, I'm up to date!

9:33 PM
@Cerberus haven't you heard? you can communicate wirelessly across the globe!

Huh?

It's the hip new invention.

@aediaλ I'm not sure Cerb has heard about this "globe" thing.

using pigeons

So how does that work? People carry your sound recording to China by means of an automobile?

9:34 PM
@Cerb: the earth is round, newsflash

Why not just use wires?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Haha, yeah, sure.

people steal the cables

And the earth rotates around the sun, haha.

@Cerberus It's true. Don't take my word for it. start walking, you'll eventually make it back to your origin.

and the sun is one of billions of stars in the universe!

9:35 PM
Yes, wireless pigeons, why not? But it's easier with wired, they won't get lost.

@MattЭллен and the undersea cable was really difficult to make because of all the fish nibbling on the construction workers

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But I can't walk on the bottom of the sea.

@aediaλ fish are dangerous! especially the little ones, you don't notice at first, and then they've taken your leg.

Angler fish!

those are scary

9:36 PM
@aediaλ Do you know how certain species mate?
The female is like this: O and the male is like this: .

I'm already nervous about the next sentence

And the male sucks himself tight to her belly, and he is then permanently attached to her, by means of certain proteins that make their bodies one.
Then many of his organs start to dissolve.

Hold on, is this flirting? In this chat?

Until he is only a bag of sperm hanging for her belly.

user19161
@Cerberus Wow, now I am turned on.

9:38 PM
@Cerberus what? why not? I thought you lived under the sea.

That she can use when needed.

I take that as a yes.

Yes.

user19161
More flirting in this chat!

@Cerberus I will take that as a yes as well.

Eeek!

It's pretty cool.
@RegDwighт So perspicacious.

I'm in that kind of mood.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I didn't know she could have multiple males!
Impressive.
Polyandrous bitch.

9:46 PM
@Cerberus that's awesome
> Here the angler fish is comparing its camouflage with a flounder which -- holy crap, did you see that?

I know! I totally didn't see the flounder fish.
And she is so fast...

well, time for me to go.

Aw she scared you.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 See you!

Bai!

9:48 PM
bye folks. bye aedia, welcome back.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Is this about how your wife angled you in?

user19161
@aedia Will you be coming to chat more regularly now?

G'night Shiny One!
@Jas Yep.

user19161
@aediaλ Haha, the first three letters apply both ways!

Indeed.

10:01 PM
howdy.
Are the titles of television shows to be italicized in prose?

> A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth. — Michael Kinsley

user19161
@cornbreadninja I would use italics myself.

@JasonBourne that is the path I have taken.
@aediaλ, does Kit know you're alive? 0_0

user19161
@cornbreadninja The right path in life is often a narrow one.

user19161
Sometimes we are alone. We need to take the road less travelled.

10:11 PM
@JasonBourne or an invisible one.

@Jas I should hope so! It would be weird if I were chatting from the grave.
Oh. I read that as questioning if I was alive.
I put y'all on the phone so I could move around the house; I blame the small screen.

enjoys ride, view of ceiling

user19161
@aediaλ Ha, you should not use the internet on the phone! That's what I tell everyone!

user19161
@cornbreadninja Ride? Are you on a bus now?

@JasonBourne on aedia's phone.

user19161
10:15 PM
@cornbreadninja Oh! You are so funny today.

user19161
At the risk of boring everyone again, I declare that I have now deleted all my comments on all my accounts on SE.

The ceiling is a cool white, freshly painted. You see dingier square tiles on the ceiling through the doorway. Enter? [Y/N]

user19161
I will try to clean up my own comments periodically from now, and keep my posts self-contained.

@aediaλ y

user19161
@aediaλ Y

10:21 PM
The dimly lit area might be a hallway or foyer. You see a panel that doesn't match the tiles. A cord hangs down. Pull the cord? [Y/N]

A creaky staircase descends from the opening. You can't see much, just a dark void straight above. Go up? [Y/N]

@aediaλ omg Y

user19161
@aediaλ Y

10:25 PM
Hello everybody

hi @temp
@JasonBourne how long did that take? :x

user19161
@cornbreadninja About two hours I think. =)

@cornbreadninja and @Jas are both eaten by an attic grue.

user19161
@aediaλ End of story!

@aediaλ perishes

10:36 PM
Don't worry, we're not really going in the attic. It's too dark up there.

A: Etymology of 'ripped' as in 'ripped abs'

Benyamin Hamidekhoorip (v.) "tear apart," late 15c., probably of North Sea Germanic origin (cf. Flemish rippen "strip off roughly," Frisian rippe "to tear, rip") or else from a Scandinavian source (cf. Swedish reppa, Danish rippe "to tear, rip"). In either case, probably imitative of the sound of cloth ripping. ...

Your view is of a bright light surrounded by a soft warm white background.

Don't hurt yourself! It might be hot.
Okay, gotta run for dinner. Later, alligators!

@aediaλ have a nice dinner!

10:53 PM
guys, what is military service? if someone volunteer to go to military then is that a military service?

user19161
@TemporaryNickName Yes. You serve in the military, therefore it is military service. QED.

user19161
Check a dictionary etc first before asking.

user19161
I might be wrong.

11:07 PM
@TemporaryNickName yes, but not until they have served.

@KyleTrauberman ...

what music do you listen to when you are working?

Finest Worksong, REM.

This room is abuzzin!
I'm sorry @TemporaryNickName I didn't realize you were so concerned about my word/grammatical usage.
