Where would Gen Ref hardliners fit?

Proscriptive?
What would it proscribe?

Scripts.
It would be pro scripts.

@Cerberus Just making my little joke. You can see what side I'm on, obviously.
"That is NOT ALLOWED!"

I'm firmly in the Antiscriptive Party.

Jez
can anyone think of a word like "caroon" that means "go wildly"? I'm sure I've heard of expressions like "it's carooning through the sky", no?

1:04 PM
@RegDwightАΑA as opposed to amateur
@Jez careen?

@ΜετάEd Ah OK...so you would be on the tollllerant side?

@Jez career?

@Cerberus to little L's.

There.

Jez
ah yes, careen

1:05 PM
That's all I've got.

Jez
that's it

Stillll to lllllittlllle.

excellent!

Then fix (it) yourself.

@Cerberus Yes. Speling is over ated.

1:05 PM
I've not the time.

Very.

Just ask Shaxpur.

Of course. You are busy chatting.

I over ated a carrot just a minute ago.

How awkward.

A++ would over ate again.

@RegDwightАΑA Here, have another: ^.

Rob is online

@Robusto I couldn't caret less about your help.

welcome

Thank you.
@RegDwightАΑA But carets are a great source of vitamin alpha.

Carlo, have you considered TV, radio, and newspaper ads? — jwpat7 9 hours ago
This made me lul.

Purty funny.

@Robusto sorry, I can't hear your caretless whisper.

@RegDwightАΑA Despite your truculence I'm going to give you a nice little gift: ^^. Put them together the right way and you have a two-caret diamond.

puts together...

1:12 PM
Nice. I knew a Lego™ man like yourself could figure it out.

That ain't a diamond. That's a lozenge.

@RegDwightАΑA Maybe it's a suppository. Try using it that way.

Now it fell over and doesn't look like anything anymore.

@Mahnax Do you experience the battery drain people are reporting with Mountain Lion?
How long have you had it installed?

@RegDwightАΑA Suppositories aren't supposed to go in sideways. You're doing it wrong.

1:18 PM
Instead of a suppository try a hypothetical.

that does sound less uncomfortable

Gotta go run errands. Laters.

@user23679 Try Google Books.
@Cerberus Well ok, maybe they’re just regular old et instances. At the start of the bottom and 4th-from-the-bottom line, for example.

1:48 PM
@tchrist Damn you, browser.

HIC SVNT 🀄S 🐉QVE

More boxen.
Even using the big O.

Blame $Bill.
Have you rebooted?

I blame Bill.
I hate rebooting. I'm a UNIX guy.
Server uptime should be measured in years.
I'm a VAX guy too.
Cluster uptime should be measured in decades.
Fuck rebooting.
:-)

PDP11s had a cleaner instruction set.
Vaxen made more $$$.

1:55 PM
Yeah, well, the PDP-8 was cleaner still. Turns out when you have fewer bits you don't need so many bells and whistles.
I say let's go back to 1 bit. Then you don't even need shift instructions.

7:56AM up 235 days, 19:46, 3 users, load averages: 0.35, 0.19, 0.17
I hate rebooting.

That's what I'm talking about.

@tchrist Yup, that's regular et.
But well spotted.
@tchrist Have I asked you whether you play Bridge yet?

@Cerberus No.
Sheepshead.

Scuse me?
Then I hereby ask it.

No, I have never mastered Bridge. I play Euchre and Sheepshead.

Ah.
Try Bridge sometime, it is fun.

@tchrist I don't think you should admit that in public.

@Cerberus The second word in on the bottom line is non. The first word on the line above it seems to be d?pponant, but I can’t resolve the front into something that works for Latin.

@user23679 any dictionary?

2:06 PM
@RegDwightАΑA Many, perhaps most, of these nightflying online free dictionaries have no examples.

@tchrist okay, any good dictionary.

@Cerberus found tantum. Eventually things start to gel. You have to get used to the hand.

But seriously, the ones I come across on a regular basis all have examples. And I am not cherry-picking them. I just click on the top search result.

@cornbreadninja Mary Blige don't make good pige.

2:09 PM
@RegDwightАΑA Lots of the stuff that onelook gives you is lame.

@tchrist Non is correct! The other word is disponant.
@tchrist Exactly, time helps.

I was wondering whether that was it. I was trying to convince myself there were two letters there.
Oh wait, it's a long s.
That's why I read two p's, which I couldn't make work.
That's so mean.

Yup.
Hehe.
The first line starts with In Nomi[n]e d[omi]ni ame[n].

Not much left of domini.
I don't know how you can tell which letter something is with all those minims run together.

The conventional abbreviation is dn + ending, so dns, dni, dno, dnum...

2:13 PM
@tchrist I don't use lots of the stuff that OneLook gives me. I don't even use OneLook. I use Google to find a good dictionary or five, and then stick with those.

Like nomine. There are so many ways to attribute the single lines in min

in nomine domini hominy

@tchrist Yes, the "legs" of i/u/n/m as we call them often leave open many interpretations.
But there are many conventions.
A general mark of abbreviation is very often used to mark an omitted n or m.
So n/m is the first thing you think of when you see it.
As in nomine and amen.
Here you can look up common but idiomatic abbreviations.
Like dns.

@Cerberus Th othr prblm I hv wth al ths z tht it rdz 2 mch lk txtspk, U knw, wth th urj 2 abrv8 & sv ltrz whrvr psbl. It cn rly nfr8 U fndng thm, o rthr, nt dng so.

Urj?
Nfr8?
But you are right.
The motivation is the same: you save time and space.
Like a low-tech wormhole.

2:20 PM
The other problem I have with all this is that it reads too much like textspeak, you know, with the urge to abbreviate and save letters wherever possible. It can really enfuriate you finding them, or rather, not doing so.
Th othr prblm I hv wth al ths z tht it rdz 2 mch lk txtspk, U knw, wth th urj 2 abrvt & sv ltrz whrvr psbl. It cn rly nfrt U fndng thm, o rthr, nt dng so.
Yes, I was looking through the d’s just now.

Ah, I was reading urj as yourjay or something.

𝕴 𝖗𝖑𝖞 𝖍8 𝖗𝖉𝖓𝖌 𝖉𝖓𝖘 & 𝖉𝖗𝖐 𝖇𝖑𝖐𝖑𝖙𝖗 𝖋𝖘𝖘.

I really hate those question diamonds. They are also in Maro Kart.
Did you see the diamonds too?

That is really strange. The correct phrase printed here, and then after a moment it turned into a double diamond.

Ah.
That is SE applying formatting to the lines.

2:23 PM
The double-diamond is from idiot UTF-16 systems counting a post-BMP code point as two surrogates.
And putting a diamond in for each surrogate.

Tell SE.

I bitch at then about their surrogate problem all the time. Does no good.

Idiot UTF-16 systems: that's Bill again.

Yes, I know.

What's the SE platform?

2:25 PM
Did you know that the things that allegedy count characters, like limits on comment length, do not really do so?
They count 16-bit code units. Liars!!
I think they are using C#.

Evil.

Their regexes for detecting punctuation is also antediluvian, watch: peaches' vs peaches’
Oh, they fixed it.
Or maybe not. *I’*ve one thing. *I'*ve one thing.

They should really just count bits.

Hm, can't remember what it is, but if you use curly quotes, it screws up formatting sometimes.
They should count characters like they bloody well tell you they are doing. They lie.

In fact they should just count 1-bits. 0-bits don't have any real existence.
Yesterday's coffee is more substantial than a 0-bit.

2:28 PM
They're Platonics.

There's room here for a pun about plate tectonics but I'm going to let it slide.

I cannot understand why they convert the first blackletter e in 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑𝖊𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 into a pair of surrogates and thence to the REPLACEMENT CHARACTER diamond, yet leave the second one alone.
Oh, there they didn't do it.
𝕴 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖞 𝖍𝖆𝖙𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖉𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖉𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖊 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖉𝖆𝖗𝖐 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑‌𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 𝖋𝖆𝖈𝖊𝖘.
See!!?
There they did.
After a second.

I'm not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing.

Can you paste it again?

𝕴 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖞 𝖍𝖆𝖙𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖉𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖉𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖊 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖉𝖆𝖗𝖐 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑‌𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 𝖋𝖆𝖈𝖊𝖘. 𝕴 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖞 𝖍𝖆𝖙𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖉𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖉𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖊 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖉𝖆𝖗𝖐 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑‌𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 𝖋𝖆𝖈𝖊𝖘. 𝕴 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖞 𝖍𝖆𝖙𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖉𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖉𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖊 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖉𝖆𝖗𝖐 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑‌𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 𝖋𝖆𝖈𝖊𝖘.

2:31 PM
I see the diamonds immediately.

No changes here.

The first "e" in "blackletter" gets printed correctly, then changes into a double-diamond (replacement character pair for two surrogates) after a second or two.

Probably because the line is displayed immediately for the poster, but only after formatting for the others.

And it did that in each of the 3 instances of the word blackletter on that triple pasted line. But not when I type 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑𝖊𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 by itself.

I also often see the site work to convert my *blah* into blah.

2:33 PM
@tchrist I only see a hole in the text there.

It displays *blah* first.

Holy cow, the x-height of the blackletter font is teeny! The full extender letters barely match the x-height of the surrounding text.

@RegDwightАΑA You're weird.
I see the e's perfectly in the last example.

You see a hole better the L and the TTER? 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑‌𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗

I see diamonds.

2:34 PM
𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑‌𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗 vs 𝖇𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖑𝖊𝖙𝖙𝖊𝖗. So weird.

You don't have letters at all!

Uh, oh.

I'm fresh out of them.

I didn't know you were that illiterate.

2:35 PM
@Cerberus Do you see the blackletter text?

Yes.

Poor reg.
He's been missing all my best bits.

I everything perfectly, except that there are diamonds where you describe them.

Yes, so you and I see the same.

@tchrist Nice opening line.

2:35 PM
@tchrist I'll check again at work.

"Hello, you've been missing all my best bits."

That is what I see.

This is at home now.

2:37 PM
You probably have no font installed with the MATHEMATICAL letters.

What browser are you on?

Chrome. Vista. No modifications. And it stays that way.

I think I get mine from George Douros’s Symbola font I keep pushing.

@RegDwightАΑA I am at your work too.

But are you running Mountain Lion?

2:37 PM
Yes, the latest Mountain Lion Vista.

Mountain Vista.
No Lions involved.

Not Mountain View?

Southerners always use all for two things. Where I grew up, this is weird.
They say y'all for two people.
I say you both.

Well this is fun but I need groceries. Lator's.

@Cerberus Musica.

OK thanks.
@tchrist Only with "y"?

It's the one from George Douros.
I fear there are multiple fonts by the same name floating about.
ponders how one might spell Musica with a y
upsilon switch, maybe.

@tchrist In Chicago, blue-collar people say "youse* to indicate plural, as in "I don't wanna hear nuttin' from youse guys no more."

2:45 PM
@RegDwightАΑA Now you're just bragging.

@Robusto That's wise-guys talk. I grew up very close to Chicago, and we never said that.
Lake Geneva is only about 75 miles from O’Hare.
Wiseguys means gangsters.

I see the notes!

What did you do?

Installed Musica Western.

Ah.

@tchrist Hey, I have relatives who lived in the Bridgeport area (Mayor Daley's bailiwick) and that's how they talked. I lived in the city proper for 17 years and I heard that stuff all the time. Don't give me that Lake Geneva crap. That's like being from Albany and saying you're from New York.

Not sure I need clock faces.
I already have the other stuff.

You don't know nuttin' 'bout people from da Sout' Side.

2:48 PM
Bluecollar people don't come to Geneva.

@Robusto You're a real gangsta.

Elitist bastard.
@Cerberus No, I'm just someone from Chicago with a careful ear.
I was born in Chicago, fer chrissakes. Top that.

Then what is that gun in your pocket?
Your phone. Sure.

Everything's right except the date.

I have a (step-)grandfather who uses da for the, etc. No thetas. Weird accent.

2:55 PM
@Cerberus It's a phone shaped like a gun. Lots of fun at parties.

And airports. Shops.

@Cerberus The TSA screeners especially get a big laugh out of it.
@Robusto I didn't notice the stupid Blues Brothers connection. That is faux Chicago. But the Paul Butterfield track is real.
